As We Age, Our Thinking Process Begins to Slow Down

September 13, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

Many of us find ourselves wondering if our brain is working as efficiently as it did when we were younger. Research shows most likely it is not. Various studies suggest memory problems often “reflect a slower processing speed and poor encoding and retrieval of new memories as a result of diminished attention.” However, while normal aging causes seniors to process new information slower; judgement and reasoning powers remain largely intact.

Researchers say in the same way we cannot jump as high or run as fast as we did when we were children; our thinking process also begins to slow down. By the time we are in our 50s or 60s, this can interfere with remembering things, solving problems or learning new information. Structural changes in the brain regions involved in memory processing such as the hippocampus and the frontal lobes all experience anatomical and neurochemical changes as we age. Concentration can be affected by the natural loss of receptors and neurons. Outside factors such as not getting enough sleep or a hearing loss can exacerbate the problem, and daily aches and pains can impact our ability to concentrate as do the medications we take to ease the pain.

If an older person does not make a point to really concentrate when taking in new information, it can cause problems with recall as they never really learned it in the first place. Experts offer practical, commonsense tips to help you more reliably process information and improve your ability to focus. Examples include playing brain games, physical exercise (it helps send more blood flow to the brain), getting out in nature, listening to music, sleeping at least seven to eight hours a night or using relaxation techniques such as meditation or mindfulness.

The Impact of Sleep on Longevity: Tips for Seniors

September 09, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

Getting enough restful sleep is essential for maintaining good health and promoting longevity, especially for seniors. Quality sleep plays a crucial role in everything from mental clarity to physical well-being. Here’s how sleep affects longevity and tips for ensuring better rest.

Sleep Supports Cognitive Function

Sleep is essential for brain health, particularly for memory consolidation and cognitive function. Poor or insufficient sleep has been linked to an increased risk of cognitive decline and conditions such as dementia. Deep sleep helps clear toxins from the brain, which may protect against Alzheimer’s disease.

In senior living communities, creating a sleep-friendly environment, free from distractions and noise, helps ensure that residents get the restorative rest they need to maintain mental sharpness.

Sleep Regulates Hormones and Immune Health

Sleep plays a vital role in regulating hormones that control hunger and stress. Lack of sleep can disrupt these hormones, leading to an increased risk of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. In addition, sleep strengthens the immune system, making it more effective at fighting off infections and other illnesses.

For those in assisted living, routine healthcare assessments often focus on addressing sleep issues, ensuring seniors receive personalized support to improve their overall health and reduce the risk of illness.

Establishing a Healthy Sleep Routine

Establishing a consistent sleep schedule is one of the best ways to improve sleep quality. Seniors should aim to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, even on weekends. Reducing exposure to bright lights, such as from screens, before bed and engaging in calming activities like reading or meditating can help signal to the body that it’s time to wind down.

In assisted living Idaho Falls, caregivers often help seniors create and stick to healthy sleep routines, promoting better sleep patterns and, in turn, supporting their overall health and longevity.

Diet and Exercise: Key Components for Better Sleep

Diet and physical activity directly impact sleep quality. Seniors should avoid heavy meals, caffeine, and alcohol close to bedtime, as these can interfere with sleep. Engaging in regular physical activity during the day, such as walking or gentle yoga, helps promote deeper, more restorative sleep at night.

Residents of senior living communities often have access to fitness programs that promote not only physical health but also better sleep, further contributing to longevity and overall well-being.

By focusing on sleep hygiene and making lifestyle adjustments, seniors can improve the quality of their sleep, which is a critical factor in promoting long-term health and extending lifespan.

Traditional Medicare Does Not Cover Everything

September 09, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

Many seniors new to Medicare have questions about the scope of coverage under the program. Experts explain traditional Medicare covers most health care needs including hospital care, doctor visits and lab tests. However, some services and medical devices are not covered.

While Medicare covers treatment and doctor visits regarding medical problems in the ears; many seniors are surprised to learn it does not cover hearing aids. In 2017 a bill was passed that allows hearing aids to be sold over-the-counter without a prescription for people with mild to moderate hearing loss; greatly reducing the cost.

Eye exams, glasses and contact lenses are also not covered under traditional Medicare. Medicare does cover things like cataract surgery and other medical conditions of the eye. If you are concerned about the cost of glasses and exams, vision insurance is available. The same goes for most dental care, and there are additional plans out there to help cover the cost of dental work.

If you travel out of the country, you need to know Medicare will not cover any of your medical care. Travelers may purchase a Medigap policy that covers certain overseas medical costs; or check into travel insurance policies offering basic health care. Some seniors opt to pay upfront for emergency medical evacuation insurance.

Other types of services not covered by Medicare are podiatry, massage therapy and chiropractic care. While short-term rehabilitation services are covered, Medicare does not cover long-term care in a nursing home.

Vaccines Every Senior Should Consider Before Winter

September 06, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

As winter approaches, seniors are at higher risk for seasonal illnesses that can lead to serious health complications. While some may have concerns about vaccines, it’s important to recognize them as tools for supporting health, especially in older adults. Here are a few vaccines that seniors should consider to protect themselves during the winter months.

Influenza (Flu) Vaccine

The flu can be especially dangerous for seniors, leading to complications like pneumonia or hospitalization. The annual flu shot is tailored to combat the most common strains of the virus each year. A high-dose or adjuvanted version of the flu vaccine is often recommended for individuals aged 65 and older, as it provides a stronger immune response.

For seniors in assisted living Idaho Falls, flu vaccine clinics are typically held on-site, making it easy for residents to receive their shots as part of their regular healthcare routine.

Pneumococcal Vaccine

Pneumococcal diseases, including pneumonia, sepsis, and meningitis, are major concerns for older adults. The pneumococcal vaccine helps protect against these infections and is highly recommended for seniors. Depending on individual health, doctors may suggest either the Pneumovax 23 or Prevnar 13 vaccine. This vaccine is particularly important for those with chronic health conditions or weakened immune systems.

In many senior living communities, vaccinations like the pneumococcal shot are part of broader healthcare services aimed at maintaining residents’ overall wellness and reducing the risk of serious illnesses.

Shingles Vaccine

Shingles, caused by the reactivation of the chickenpox virus, can be painful and debilitating. The shingles vaccine, Shingrix, is recommended for adults over 50 and helps prevent both shingles and its complications, such as postherpetic neuralgia, a type of chronic pain that can last long after the rash has healed.

For seniors in assisted living communities, the shingles vaccine offers peace of mind, reducing the chances of experiencing the severe discomfort that often accompanies the condition.

COVID-19 Booster

COVID-19 remains a concern, particularly for older adults who may be more vulnerable to severe illness. Booster shots are important to maintain protection, especially against new variants. Seniors, especially those in communal settings like assisted living Idaho Falls, should consider staying up to date with their COVID-19 vaccines to reduce the risk of infection and potential complications.

Gentle Encouragement for Vaccination

While vaccines can significantly reduce the risk of serious illness, it’s important to approach the topic with empathy and understanding. Some seniors may have reservations about vaccines, so it’s essential to have open, non-judgmental conversations with healthcare providers. These professionals can offer tailored advice, helping seniors make informed decisions about their health.

Fall Prevention Includes Balance Exercises

September 06, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

According to the National Institute of Health (NIH), every year more than one in four people aged 65 years or older suffers from a fall, and many of those accidents require a trip to the emergency department.  In addition to serious injuries, some falls even result in death.  To help mitigate the risk, experts recommend that along with safety modifications to the home that elderly adults also do balance exercises.

Balance exercises are relatively easy-to-do and can improve both your balance as well as increase lower body strength.  Ask your doctor for some suggestions or take a look at the Internet. Most do not require special equipment other than someone to assist you if needed.  The exercises can be done throughout the day and each one only takes a few minutes to do.

One example of a balance exercise is called Tightrope Walk.  This easy exercise improves balance, posture, and core strength.  Start in a standing position and lift your arms extending them out to your sides.  Now walk in a straight line keeping your gaze focused on a fixed point in the distance.  Each time you raise your foot, pause with it in the raised position for 2 to 3 seconds.  Alternating your feet, continue for 20 to 30 steps.

Another exercise is Rock the Boat, which starts by standing with your feet hip-distance apart and extending your arms out to your sides.  Lift your left foot off the floor and bend your knee to bring your heel toward your bottom holding it there for up to 30 seconds.  Now do the same with the other side.  Do each side 3 times.

At MorningStar at West San Jose, we understand the importance of our resident’s living life to the fullest.  This is why we offer a Life Enrichment program that focuses on creative ways to stay physically, intellectually and socially active.  Please see our website for more information about MorningStar’s senior living in San Jose.

This post is intended for informational purposes only.  Before beginning any exercises, please consult with your health care provider.

When to Get More Care for a Loved One Living With Dementia

August 23, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Retirement Homes

A Place for Mom’s website explains how many people in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease or another type of dementia can live independently with or without the help of in-home caregivers or family members. However, they also stress there may come a time when the disease progresses to a stage where the person’s safety and physical well-being is in jeopardy and more care is needed.

As a person with Alzheimer’s may have good days and bad, it can be hard to tell if they would be better served in a memory care community. Experts say signs include: has their appearance changed? Do they look unkempt and have they lost weight due to forgetting to eat? Do they appear agitated and confused? Have you noticed changes in mood, personality or routine?

Your loved one’s healthcare provider can help you decide if it is time for memory care. Dr. Philip Branshaw, an internal medicine specialist in Batavia, Illinois, says, “When talking about memory care . . . I’ll center the talk around [the person’s] ability to perform their activities of daily living,”

A Place for Mom says to gauge a senior’s abilities and safety, ask if they:

  • Get lost on routes they take frequently, such as going to the grocery store or taking a walk around the neighborhood

  • Are forgetting to eat or drink

  • Are forgetting to take their medication appropriately

  • Are struggling to bathe regularly or get dressed as usual

  • Had a fall or been to the emergency room recently

  • Are not caring for a pet properly

Along with assisted living, MorningStar at West San Jose provides compassionate memory care for those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  Our holistic approach to care is designed to affirm the value of the person and to find ways to celebrate the smallest successes.  Beginning with dedicated caregivers to activities, programs and meals tailored to our residents’ special needs, we bring a deep understanding of the disease to our care.  Please see our website for more information and to set up a tour.

MorningStar is guided by a culture rooted in our mission of honoring God, valuing seniors, and investing in our team, which allows us to deliver services with warmth, sincerity and depth of purpose. We have built a reputation for creating retirement homes filled with an atmosphere of love and community. Embracing Technology: Apps and Devices for Seniors

August 23, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

I remember the first time I helped a resident set up a video call with their grandchild. The joy on their face was priceless, and it made me realize just how powerful technology can be for seniors. In today’s world, embracing technology is more than just a trend—it’s a way to stay connected, engaged, and safe. Let’s explore some fantastic apps and devices that can enhance the lives of seniors, making every day a little easier and more enjoyable.

Staying Connected with Family

One of the greatest gifts technology offers is the ability to keep in touch with loved ones, no matter where they are. Video call apps like FaceTime and Zoom have become staples in assisted living Portland, allowing residents to share everyday moments with family and friends. One of our residents recently told me about the joy of joining a family birthday party virtually, feeling like they were right there in the celebration.

Health and Wellness Apps

Technology isn’t just about staying connected; it’s also about staying healthy. Many seniors use health and wellness apps to manage their daily routines. Apps like Medisafe offer reminders to take medications, ensuring nothing is forgotten. At senior living Portland, we often share tips on how to use apps like MyFitnessPal to track nutrition and exercise, making it easier to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Brain-Training Games

Keeping our minds active is as important as physical health. Brain-training apps like Lumosity and Elevate provide fun challenges that improve memory, attention, and problem-solving skills. Our community enjoys these games, often turning them into friendly competitions that are both fun and mentally stimulating. It’s wonderful to see everyone engaged and excited to learn new things.

Safety and Emergency Devices

Safety is always a priority, and technology offers peace of mind with devices like medical alert systems and GPS trackers. These tools allow seniors to call for help with the push of a button and keep families informed of their whereabouts. It’s reassuring for both residents and their loved ones to know that help is always just a button away, enhancing the feeling of independence and security.

Learning and Entertainment

With tablets and smartphones, a world of entertainment and learning is at your fingertips. Apps like Kindle and Audible offer thousands of books to read or listen to, while Netflix and YouTube provide endless hours of shows, movies, and documentaries. Many residents in assisted living Portland use these apps to discover new interests and enjoy their favorite pastimes, whether it’s reading a bestseller or learning about a new topic.

Conclusion

Technology can open up new possibilities for seniors, enhancing their lives in ways we never thought possible. From staying connected with family to improving health and safety, these apps and devices offer tools to enrich daily life. We encourage everyone to explore these technologies and see how they can make life more enjoyable and fulfilling. Whether you’re new to technology or an experienced user, there’s always something new to discover.

Lifestyle Habits Help Delay the Onset of Diabetes

August 21, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes affects millions of Americans, and every year more than a million people are diagnosed with the disease. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) reports in 2021, 38.4 million Americans, or 11.6% of the population, had diabetes. Of that number 2 million had type 1 diabetes, which includes more than 300,000 children and adolescents.

Seniors aged 65 years and older make up a large percentage of Americans with the disease at 29.2% or 16.5 million seniors (diagnosed and undiagnosed). Diabetes can be deadly and was the 8th leading cause of death in 2021. People with diabetes are at an increased risk of vision problems, heart attacks, nerve damage and stroke. In 2022, the CDC estimated the cost of diabetes was $412.9 billion.

Prediabetes is another huge problem and numbers from 2021, report 97.6 million Americans age 18 and older are affected. It is a chronic condition in which blood glucose levels are higher than normal but not high enough to be classified as diabetes. While it carries an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, it isn’t inevitable. Studies show prediabetes can be reversed or the risk mitigated with lifestyle changes such as diet, medications, and early detection.

Yale Medicine endocrinologist, Anika Anam, MD, explains, “Prediabetes goes hand in hand with metabolic syndrome, the term for a condition that includes hypertension, obesity, and high cholesterol.” She adds each of those conditions raises the risk for serious issues including heart disease, stroke, and cancer.

The CDC’s national Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP), finds “people with prediabetes who lost a modest amount of weight—5 to 7% (10 to 14 pounds for a person weighing 200 pounds, for example)—with the help of a structured lifestyle-change program cut their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 58%.” In addition, experts say at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise per day can not only improve insulin sensitivity and lower blood sugar levels, but aid in weight loss. Cutting out added sugars, eating more complex carbs (vegetables, legumes, nuts, and whole grains), and increasing protein are other recommended lifestyle changes as is reducing stress.

MorningStar of Parker is one of the finest senior living communities in the quaint town of Parker, CO. Along with independent living; we offer supportive assisted living, which allows seniors to live rich, independent lives while receiving the personalized care they need. Do You Need a Daily Multivitamin?

August 21, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

As we age, it becomes more important than ever to protect our health but making decisions on how we do it can be confusing at best. One day it seems this diet is better than another and they have lots of initials such as DASH, MIND, TLC or KETO as well as Mediterranean, vegan, vegetarian and flexitarian diets. Adding to the challenge is whether we need a daily multivitamin.

While it is a good idea to get advice from your healthcare provider, it doesn’t hurt to hear what some other experts say. For example, the Harvard School of Public Health says if you eat a healthy diet, a multivitamin may have little or no benefit. A healthy diet should include plenty of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, good protein sources and healthy fats.

However, the National Academy of Medicine cautions some Americans may not be getting enough of specific vitamins and minerals such as vitamin D and vitamin E from food sources alone. Vitamin deficiency can also occur in people with diseases like celiac, ulcerative colitis, or cystic fibrosis, which cause their digestive systems to not function properly. Others who may benefit from the addition of specific vitamins include the elderly or conditions such as pregnancy, alcoholism and taking certain medications including treating high blood pressure.

Doctors say even those with diseases such as osteoporosis may only need to increase their intake of nutrients targeted toward maintaining bone health, or if that is not possible to take a supplement. If in doubt, ask your healthcare team if you should consult with a dietician. Remember to let your doctors know about any supplements you are taking in case of drug interactions with prescription medications.

MorningStar at West San Jose is an assisted living and memory care community with beautiful common areas and well-designed suites.  Our residents enjoy a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community, and a hospitality and care team who feel called and honored to serve seniors in senior living.  Please contact us or visit our website for more information about luxury senior living in San Jose.

The Benefits of Therapy for Senior Mental Health

August 21, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in retirement communities

In our retirement communities, we often talk about the importance of caring for both body and mind. While it’s common to focus on physical health as we age, mental health is just as crucial for a fulfilling life. Therapy can be a wonderful tool for enhancing mental well-being and resilience in seniors. Let’s explore some of the key benefits therapy offers and how it can improve the quality of life for older adults.

Reducing Anxiety and Depression

Many seniors experience anxiety and depression due to various factors, such as loss, health issues, or changes in living situations. Therapy provides a safe space to express feelings and learn coping strategies. I’ve witnessed residents in our retirement communities who started therapy and found relief from anxiety. With the support of a therapist, they’ve discovered techniques to manage their emotions and regain control over their lives.

Enhancing Emotional Well-Being

Therapy encourages self-reflection and understanding, which can significantly enhance emotional well-being. By exploring emotions and past experiences, seniors can gain a better understanding of themselves and their relationships. At senior living Portland, many residents have shared that therapy has helped them navigate life’s transitions with grace and confidence, leading to more meaningful and satisfying relationships with friends and family.

Coping with Grief and Loss

As we age, the loss of loved ones becomes more common, and coping with grief can be challenging. Therapy offers a supportive environment to process these feelings and find a path toward healing. In our retirement home Portland, residents often participate in group therapy sessions where they share experiences and find solace in knowing they’re not alone. This shared experience fosters a sense of community and connection, which can be incredibly comforting.

Improving Cognitive Function

Engaging in therapy can also have positive effects on cognitive function. Conversations with a therapist stimulate the brain and encourage active thinking, which can help keep the mind sharp. Many residents have noticed improved memory and concentration after regular therapy sessions, allowing them to stay engaged and active in their daily activities.

Building Resilience

Therapy helps build resilience by teaching seniors how to adapt to new challenges and changes in life. Whether it’s adjusting to a new living situation or managing a chronic illness, therapy provides the tools to navigate these challenges with confidence and strength. I’ve seen residents become more resilient and empowered, embracing life’s changes with a positive outlook.

Conclusion

Therapy offers numerous benefits for seniors, from reducing anxiety and depression to improving cognitive function and building resilience. In our community, we believe in the power of therapy to enhance mental well-being and support a fulfilling life. Whether you’re living in assisted living Portland or other retirement communities, consider exploring therapy as a way to nurture your mental health and strengthen your emotional resilience. Here’s to a healthier, happier future for all!

An Important Conversation Many Families Aren’t Having

August 19, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

Medical professionals and counselors who deal with families facing end-of-life issues offer a few suggestions to the rest of us on “how to start a conversation” when we have a very sick loved one. They say the first thing to consider is having the conversation in one’s kitchen is a whole lot easier than having it in the hospital. It may also encourage your family to start the conversation if they learn that studies find families who have talked about it beforehand express less feelings of guilt after the person passes away. Moreover they say they had an easier time grieving and were less likely to experience depression.

These types of questions to ask to get a conversation started include “what does the person value most about their life?” Another topic of discussion should be to find out what the person understands about their illness? Ask: what matters most to them at the end of life, what outcomes are unacceptable; what are the person’s fears and physical needs?

As a family member, you need to remember to practice active listening. It is important to leave your own view out of the discussion and try to understand what the person is feeling. Find out if they want to spend their last days at home; and whom do they wish to be surrounded by as they face death. This is also a good time to encourage them to express their wishes regarding burial.

Ask if the person has an advance directive, which is basically a legally binding document that gives instructions for your healthcare in the event that you are no longer able to make or communicate those decisions yourself. This can include your wishes around discontinuing treatment and medications; and also saves your family from having to make difficult decisions.

At the top-rated MorningStar of Parker senior living community, our four-story building features 49 suites for independent living and 54 suites for assisted living (as large as 1609 square feet, including three styles of penthouses). Our distinct Reflections Neighborhood is devoted to the individualized care of those with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. It offers 43 suites in a choice of suites and all-inclusive memory care. Contact us to learn more about the area’s most trusted assisted living.

The Many Benefits of Senior Living Communities

August 19, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

As it turns out, many seniors are quite happy with their decision to move into an independent or assisted living community.  In part, that may be since many of today’s senior communities are loaded with numerous amenities and activities.   As a resident, you are provided with a lifestyle of comfort and community as well as a sense of safety and security.  Here are some of the many benefits:

  • When seniors move out of their family home into a senior community, they find themselves freed from lots of responsibilities.  Owning a home requires routine care and maintenance such as yard work and other housekeeping chores.

  • Seniors often live alone and experience feelings of loneliness and isolation.  Also, as people age, many are reluctant to drive, which means they end up spending a lot of time at home by themselves.  This is something that is not a problem in senior communities.  While activities are optional, there is generally something of interest for everyone.

  • For seniors who do not drive anymore, senior communities usually offer some form of transportation.  In addition, many routinely schedule day trips to activities such as plays, museums, shopping or other events.

  • We also know that many seniors who live alone do not eat well.  In some cases, grocery shopping and preparing food has become difficult.  Many senior communities make healthy, nutritious food a priority and offer choices such as low sodium, no sugar added etc.

  • As a senior living resident, you will receive help with activities of daily living (ADLs) to provide a better quality of life. Around-the-clock care managers, access to licensed nurses and medication management are just a few of the many services senior communities provide to ensure your safety and to meet your needs.

  • Finally, we cannot forget the importance of socializing and making new friends at any age.  Even for individuals who value their privacy, there is still the comfort of having other people around.  If the event of a fall or medical emergency, help is always close at hand.

At MorningStar at West San Jose, we provide all this and more. Our broad range of services and amenities include all-day dining, salon, theater, fitness center, bistro, sky terrace, wellness programs and activities to promote a healthy, engaged lifestyle for residents. Please contact us or visit our website for more information about MorningStar’s senior living in San Jose.

Habits That Can Impact Bone Health Negatively

August 19, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

Growing up, my grandmother used to remind me that strong bones were the foundation of a long, active life. As a medical professional, I find myself echoing that wisdom to my patients, especially seniors who are focused on maintaining their independence. While we often focus on ways to strengthen our bones, it’s equally important to recognize habits that can weaken them. Here are some common habits that could negatively impact your bone health and how to make positive changes.

Sedentary Lifestyle

One major factor that can harm bone health is leading a sedentary lifestyle. Bones need regular, weight-bearing exercise to remain strong and resilient. In conversations with patients, I often stress the importance of staying active. Whether it’s a daily walk, tai chi, or gardening, keeping moving is crucial. Many residents at senior living Portland have found joy and benefits in participating in group exercises that encourage both fitness and fun.

Poor Nutrition

What we eat plays a critical role in bone health. A diet lacking in calcium and vitamin D can lead to weakened bones and increase the risk of fractures. I always recommend a balanced diet that includes leafy greens, dairy products, and fortified foods to ensure adequate nutrient intake. At assisted living Portland, sharing nutritious recipes and meal ideas is a popular activity that not only supports bone health but also builds community.

Smoking

Smoking is detrimental to bone health because it reduces blood supply to the bones and decreases calcium absorption. This can lead to lower bone density over time. I often counsel patients on the benefits of quitting smoking, not just for their bones but for their overall health. I’ve seen remarkable improvements in bone health among those who have made this important change.

Excessive Alcohol Consumption

While a glass of wine with dinner can be pleasant, excessive alcohol consumption can interfere with calcium absorption and weaken bones. It’s wise to consume alcohol in moderation. Many seniors have successfully replaced alcohol with healthier options, and in communities like retirement home Portland, residents often enjoy alcohol-free events that emphasize health and wellness.

Inadequate Sun Exposure

Vitamin D is essential for calcium absorption, and sunlight is a natural source. However, many seniors don’t get enough sun exposure. I suggest spending some time outdoors each day to soak up some safe sunlight. Whether it’s enjoying a walk or relaxing on a patio, a little sunshine can go a long way in supporting bone health.

Conclusion

Recognizing and changing habits that negatively affect bone health can help maintain your independence and quality of life. By staying active, eating a balanced diet, and avoiding harmful habits like smoking and excessive drinking, you can protect your bones.

Let’s take steps to care for our bones and ensure they can support us well into the future!

A Healthy Breakfast Helps Regulate Your Appetite for the Rest of the Day

August 16, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

Growing up, most of our mothers told us it wasn’t healthy to skip breakfast. While we listened, many of us still went off to school without eating anything. Based on current research, it turns out our mother’s advice was right again, and eating breakfast is good for us for several reasons.

Registered Dietician Erin Palinski-Wade explains when we eat a healthy breakfast upon rising in the morning; it helps regulate our appetite for the rest of the day. If we break our nightly fast with a good meal, we are less likely to indulge in sugary or fat-laden food later in the morning. A healthy breakfast also helps to prevent blood sugar highs and lows and Palinski-Wade says this is important for diabetics as well as the rest of us.

While many breakfast foods such as cereal, baked goods, and granola bars are high in sugar and refined grains, experts say we should refuel our body each morning with protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals. Protein makes us feel fuller in senior living and keeps us from later snacking on unhealthy foods. Eggs, yogurt, sausage, and peanut butter spread on whole wheat toast are good sources of protein. Fiber helps our digestive system work well and is found in oatmeal and whole grain cereals. Many meals can be partly prepared the night before to make your morning routine easier.

At MorningStar at West San Jose, we provide residents a wide range of services and amenities including beautifully prepared, nutritious meals. Created by our Executive Chef and largely prepared from scratch, meals are served restaurant-style in our attractive dining room.  Menus include low sodium, sugar free, no sugar added, vegetarian and low-fat options for residents to self-manage. Other services include 24/7 care managers, certified medication care managers, scheduled health & wellness evaluations and access to a licensed nurse. Choosing the Right Walking Gear for Comfort and Safety

August 16, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

Walking is one of the best exercises for people of all ages, offering numerous benefits for both physical and mental health. As a professional in the senior care industry, I’ve seen how important it is to choose the right walking gear to ensure comfort and safety. Here are some tips to help you select the best walking gear, especially for seniors in senior living who want to stay active and enjoy the great outdoors.

Invest in Proper Footwear

The first and most crucial piece of walking gear is a good pair of shoes. Proper footwear should provide adequate support, cushioning, and grip. Look for shoes that have a sturdy sole and a comfortable fit to prevent blisters and other foot issues. Many residents at assisted living Portland have found that investing in high-quality walking shoes has made a significant difference in their walking experience, allowing them to walk longer distances without discomfort.

Choose the Right Clothing

When it comes to walking, the right clothing can make all the difference. Opt for lightweight, breathable fabrics that wick away moisture and keep you cool. Dressing in layers is also a good idea, especially when walking in areas where the weather can change quickly. At senior living Portland, we encourage residents to wear comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing that allows them to move freely and stay safe during their walks.

Use Walking Aids if Needed

Walking aids like canes or walking poles can provide extra stability and support, especially for those with balance issues. They can help reduce strain on the joints and provide a sense of security while walking. If you or your loved one are considering using a walking aid, consult with a healthcare professional to ensure you choose the right type and fit. At retirement home Portland, we have seen many residents benefit from using walking poles, which have helped them maintain their independence and confidence while walking.

Protect Yourself from the Sun

Walking outdoors means exposure to the sun, so it’s important to take steps to protect your skin. Wear a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to shield yourself from harmful UV rays. Staying hydrated is also essential, so bring a water bottle along on your walks to keep hydrated and prevent overheating. These simple precautions can help you enjoy your walks safely and comfortably.

Consider Reflective Gear

If you enjoy walking early in the morning or late in the evening, consider wearing reflective gear to increase your visibility to others. Reflective vests, armbands, or clothing with reflective strips can help ensure that drivers and cyclists see you clearly. This added layer of safety is especially important in low-light conditions and can help prevent accidents.

Conclusion

Choosing the right walking gear is essential for comfort and safety, especially for seniors who want to stay active and healthy. By investing in proper footwear, wearing the right clothing, and using walking aids if needed, you can enhance your walking experience and enjoy all the benefits it offers.

How Mushrooms Support Immune Health

August 14, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

Imagine biting into a savory mushroom dish and knowing that each delicious bite is doing wonders for your health. That’s the magic of mushrooms—they’re not just culinary delights but also nutritional powerhouses. Over the years, I’ve been amazed at how these fungi, often overlooked in the produce section, have incredible benefits, especially for supporting the immune system. Here’s why adding mushrooms to your diet can be a game-changer, especially as we age:

Nutrient-Rich Superfoods

Mushrooms are low in calories yet packed with essential nutrients like vitamins B and D, selenium, and powerful antioxidants. These nutrients play a crucial role in maintaining a healthy immune system, making them a great addition to any diet. At assisted living Portland, we frequently add mushrooms to dishes such as soups and salads, ensuring residents get a tasty boost of nutrition with every meal.

Boosting Immunity

Certain mushrooms, such as shiitake, maitake, and reishi, contain compounds like beta-glucans and polysaccharides, known for enhancing immune function. These compounds help the body fend off infections more effectively. In our senior living Portland community, we’ve noticed that incorporating mushrooms into the diet has made many of us feel more resilient during cold and flu season. It’s like having a natural defense system on your plate.

Anti-Inflammatory Properties

Chronic inflammation is a common issue as we age, and mushrooms have natural anti-inflammatory properties that can help. By reducing inflammation in the body, mushrooms support overall health and well-being. Residents have shared that they feel more energetic and less stiff when enjoying mushrooms regularly. It’s one of the simple pleasures we savor, knowing it’s good for us.

Easy to Incorporate into Meals

One of the great things about mushrooms is how easy they are to include in various dishes. Whether sautéed, grilled, or added to casseroles, mushrooms bring a rich umami flavor that enhances any meal. We love trying new recipes, such as mushroom risotto or creamy mushroom soup, which makes meal times both delicious and nutritious.

Supporting Cognitive Health

Beyond their immune-boosting benefits, mushrooms are also linked to better cognitive health. They contain antioxidants and compounds that may protect brain cells from damage, potentially improving memory and cognitive function. We encourage residents to include mushrooms in their diets regularly, knowing they’re benefiting both their bodies and minds.

Mushrooms offer a delicious way to support immune health and overall wellness. They’re versatile, flavorful, and packed with nutrients that make them a worthy addition to any meal. Whether you’re living in assisted living Portland or simply looking to boost your immune system, adding mushrooms to your diet can have significant health benefits. So next time you’re planning a meal, consider incorporating mushrooms for a healthy, tasty boost. Here’s to nourishing our bodies and enjoying the simple, tasty gifts of nature!

The Signs of Parkinson’s Disease

August 12, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

The Medical News Today says too many people do not get diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease (PD) and related neurodegenerative diseases until they are in the advanced stages; thereby limiting their prevention and treatment options. Medical professionals say although the disease has typically been categorized as primarily a movement disorder, new research finds executive function may be a major factor in determining its progression. Executive function is defined as a broad group of mental skills enabling people to complete tasks and interact with others. Disordered executive function impairs a person’s ability to organize and manage behavior.

According to the Parkinson’s Foundation the top 10 signs of the disease are:

  • Tremors

  • Small handwriting

  • Loss of smell

  • Trouble sleeping

  • Trouble moving or walking

  • Constipation

  • A soft or low voice

  • Masked face (looking depressed or mad)

  • Dizziness or fainting

  • Stooping or hunching over

If you have any of these signs, you should see your healthcare provider. He or she may refer you to a neurologist, who specializes in the brain as well as other specialists. Experts say there is not a one-size-fits-all treatment, but rather your treatment will be tailored to address your own special needs and is usually a team effort. Based on your symptoms, treatment may include seeing a physical, speech or occupational therapist; medications and exercises.

Research also suggests a strong link between those who experience what is known as “minor hallucinations” early on in the disease to a more rapid loss of executive function as well as cognitive decline in the later stages. Minor hallucinations involve the senses – sight, hearing, touch, smell, taste. These include seeing someone who is not there or seeing a face or object in something like a cloud or a carpet. It is important to let your doctor know if you are experiencing any hallucinations.

5 Common Myths About Assisted Living

August 12, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

As a professional in the senior care industry, I often encounter misconceptions about assisted living. These myths can cause unnecessary worry for families and seniors considering this option. I’d like to set the record straight and share some insights into what it truly offers. Below are 5 common myths, and the truths that debunk them.

Myth 1: Assisted Living Means Losing Independence

One of the most persistent myths is that moving to assisted living means giving up your independence. In reality, it’s designed to support independence by providing assistance with daily tasks while allowing residents to maintain their personal routines. In our community, for example, residents can enjoy their own apartments and participate in activities that interest them. This blend of support and autonomy allows seniors to live life on their terms while having access to help when needed.

Myth 2: Assisted Living is the Same as a Nursing Home

Many people confuse assisted living with nursing homes, but they are quite different. These communities offer a more independent lifestyle, focusing on social engagement and personalized care. Nursing homes, on the other hand, provide more intensive medical care for those with significant health needs. As a professional in senior living Portland, I’ve seen how to provide a vibrant, community-oriented environment that promotes well-being without the clinical feel of a nursing home.

Myth 3: It’s Too Expensive

Another common myth is that assisted living is prohibitively expensive. While it’s true that costs can vary, many families find that it is more affordable than they initially thought, especially when considering the value it provides. Residents receive housing, meals, activities, and care, often at a lower cost than maintaining a home with additional support services. Moreover, some communities, like retirement home Portland, offer financial planning assistance to help families explore their options and make the best decision for their budget.

Myth 4: Assisted Living is Lonely

The idea that it’s isolating is far from the truth. In fact, many seniors find a sense of community and belonging that they might not experience living alone. Assisted living communities offer a variety of social activities, from group outings to exercise classes, ensuring residents have plenty of opportunities to connect with others. I’ve seen firsthand how residents form lasting friendships and engage in vibrant social lives, which can significantly enhance their overall happiness and well-being.

Myth 5: Residents Lose Control Over Their Lives

Some worry that moving to assisted living means losing control over daily choices. However, these communities prioritize residents’ preferences and individual needs. Seniors choose how they spend their time, what activities they participate in, and even the type of care they receive. We work closely with residents to tailor their experience, ensuring they have control and flexibility in their day-to-day lives.

Understanding the realities can help dispel the myths that often surround it. These communities provide supportive, engaging environments where seniors can thrive while maintaining their independence. If you or a loved one are considering this option, I encourage you to visit a community, meet the staff, and see firsthand the vibrant life it offers. It’s about finding the right fit and embracing a new chapter with confidence and excitement.
