Walking Pace and the Link to Alzheimer's Disease

March 10, 2025 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

Several studies, including one from the journal Current Biology, report the way a senior walks may be messaging something about their future cognitive health. Researchers say walking relies on a person’s navigational skills, which demands mental engagement.

The slowing of a person’s walking pace is one of the things studies are looking at as an early warning sign of Alzheimer’s disease. People may start to take smaller steps and drift from side to side as well as exhibit poor balance and a history of frequent falls.  Ryan Glatt, a certified personal trainer, senior brain health coach, and director of the FitBrain Program at Pacific Neuroscience Institute in California, told Medical News Today, “In clinical settings, gait-based tests can be helpful for determining fall risk, especially with distractions, and perhaps can be part of a more comprehensive cognitive evaluation in the near future.”

Other studies report that people with early Alzheimer’s have difficulty turning when walking. Researchers say the problem was not detected in older, healthy participants who suffered from mild cognitive impairment, suggesting the problem is specific to Alzheimer’s. Glatt explained the reason might be connected to changes in the hippocampus, a region of the brain partially responsible for spatial memory that helps to control visuospatial navigation.

Another early warning sign of Alzheimer’s is an altered sense of a person’s environmental perceptions. For example, a person may struggle to understand objects, and become confused by thinking something is 2D when it is really 3D; or vice versa.

Dr. Jonathan Fellows, who leads the Michigan Institute for Neurological Disorders, Alzheimer’s Disease and Memory Disorder Center, adds, “Observation of gait is an important assessment in the diagnosis of various dementias, including Alzheimer disease, as patients with this disorder can have what is called dyspraxia, or difficulty doing a previously learned task – in this case walking or turning.” Researchers explained that some of the problems that appear to be specific to Alzheimer’s might allow doctors to diagnose patients earlier; and without the need for blood, spinal fluid or speech tests.

MorningStar at West San Jose Provides Specialized Memory Care

February 07, 2025 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

Along with assisted living, MorningStar at West San Jose offers individualized, specialized care to those with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.  Our holistic approach to memory care is designed to affirm the value of the person and to find ways to celebrate the smallest successes.

Our Reflections Neighborhood is specifically designed to meet the needs of residents throughout the various stages of the disease.  The expansive area houses 34 suites and is intended to encourage residents to safely explore their surroundings. Memory care residents also enjoy the outdoors on the terrace.

Mealtimes in the Reflections Neighborhood are as much about Community as they are about Nutrition, with residents and team members eating together.  Family style meals allow team members to encourage residents’ appetites as well as to provide any needed assistance with eating. In addition, much of our food is modified out of respect for some of our residents’ compromised eating abilities and includes finger foods, texture-modified diets and easy-to-recognize balanced meals that taste as good as they look.

As dementia care specialists, we focus on nurturing and supporting the essence of the individual, regardless of the level of memory loss. Before a resident joins our community, we meet with the senior and their family to learn as much as we can about the person’s background, talents and preferences. This allows us to create an effective individualized care plan to guide our daily interactions and communication techniques.  Our specialized care incorporates music, art, dance, and aromatherapy to heal and comfort residents while considering the uniqueness of each person.

Another thing that makes MorningStar at West San Jose a special place for memory care is our loving, compassionate team who feels privileged to serve and is made up of men and women who willingly go the extra mile to meet the needs of our residents.  Please contact us or visit our website for more information.

Holiday Gift Giving Suggestions for Seniors

December 30, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

Every year family members are faced with the question of what to get mom or dad or another senior member of their family for the holidays. Seniors are especially difficult to give as they most likely already have everything they need.

Surveys of seniors show many of them prioritize experiences, adventures and meaningful activities over receiving more possessions. Through the years they have had most anything they could possibly need or want and are ready to embrace life with the kinds of things that bring lasting memories and build stronger connections with family and friends.

Gift giving guides for seniors suggest rather than physical things, gift things that don’t add more clutter up their home but rather give them experiences such as tickets to a play or to an orchestra. Check out your community’s entertainment that has a holiday theme and includes a meal out before the event. If you are a daughter or granddaughter, book a trip to the spa for mom and/or grandma and plan on going together for a fun and relaxing day. Tickets to a special museum exhibit are fun for art lovers but check with the museum about availability of a wheelchair or scooter for a senior loved one if needed.

Other ideas could be a subscription for audiobooks, or for meal kits if your parents or grandparents are still cooking for themselves. If they enjoy eating out, gift cards to their favorite restaurants are sure to be appreciated and used.

At MorningStar of Parker, our contemporary senior living community provides luxury independent living and assisted living in a choice of configurations, floorplans and even buildings. Reflections Neighborhood provides comprehensive, compassionate memory care with 43 dedicated suites in a choice of studio or one-bedroom units. Contact us to learn more, and ask us about our current offer for One Month RENT FREE – Assisted Living and Memory Care only.

Alzheimer’s Disease is the Most Common Form of Dementia

December 16, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

Many of us, especially seniors, have heard or known someone with Alzheimer’s disease and have an idea of the devastation it causes. While there are other types of diseases categorized as dementia, Alzheimer’s is by far the most common form of dementia accounting for 60 to 80 percent of cases. You should know dementia is not actually a specific disease but refers to a decline in a person’s mental ability to such a degree it interferes with their daily life.

It is also important to understand dementia is not a normal condition of aging but rather caused by damage to brain cells that affect a person’s memory, reasoning and other cognitive skills including an ability to communicate. There are several types of clinical dementia including: Alzheimer’s disease; vascular dementia; dementia with Lewy Body; and frontotemporal dementia. Mixed dementia is the term used when a person has both Alzheimer’s and another form of dementia, which is causing their mental decline.

The Alzheimer’s Association says the “most common early symptom of Alzheimer’s is trouble remembering new information because the disease typically impacts the part of the brain associated with learning first.” As the disease progresses, the person is robbed of many other abilities such as speaking, swallowing and walking.

To help get the proper diagnosis and rule out other causes that may be treatable such as side effects from a medication, it is important to see your doctor. If warranted, they may have you see a specialist that can do further testing.

MorningStar at West San Jose provides memory care in our Reflections Neighborhood to those with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. We are a team of compassionate professionals who feel privileged to care for our special residents. We also consider supporting family members as part of our job and recognize that a diagnosis of dementia is traumatizing for all involved. Contact us or visit our website for availability, pricing information and to schedule a tour.

MorningStar is guided by a culture rooted in our mission of honoring God, valuing seniors, and investing in our team, which allows us to deliver services with warmth, sincerity and depth of purpose. How Memory Care Communities Use Technology to Improve Engagement

November 25, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

Technology is making a big difference in retirement home Portland, especially when it comes to helping residents feel more engaged and connected. While tech might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of memory care, it’s amazing how these tools are helping seniors stay stimulated, share meaningful moments with loved ones, and even spark memories.

Virtual Reality for Memory Stimulation

Imagine putting on a headset and finding yourself at a bustling farmer’s market, or watching the sunset over a beach you used to visit. Virtual reality (VR) in memory care is opening up the world for residents in incredible ways. With VR, seniors can “travel” to places they loved or even experience things they’ve only dreamed about—without ever leaving the community. It’s not only a fun adventure but also a way to spark memories and encourage conversation.

We have a resident named Frank who grew up in a small seaside town. When we introduced him to VR, we found a virtual seaside tour just for him. Watching his face light up as he “walked” along the beach was priceless. He started sharing stories about his childhood, some of which his family had never even heard before. For Frank, that virtual visit was like a window back in time, and for his family, it was a chance to hear his memories come alive.

Tablets for Video Calls and Social Connection

Staying in touch with family is so important, and in many senior living Portland communities, tablets have become a lifeline. Video calls allow residents to see loved ones face-to-face, even when they’re miles away. The technology is simple enough for residents to use with a bit of help, and it lets them keep up with family milestones, holidays, or even just daily “hellos.”

Memory Apps for Engagement and Connection

Memory-boosting apps are also gaining popularity. These apps often have personalized quizzes, games, and puzzles that help stimulate cognitive function in fun and engaging ways. Many of these tools are set up to show residents photos, sounds, or trivia questions related to their past, making them feel more connected to their own stories.

One app we use shows familiar images—like a picture of a classic car or an old family-style kitchen—and prompts residents to share what they remember. We recently used it with Betty, who instantly recognized a photo of a cherry-red car similar to the one her dad drove when she was young. That one image led her to reminisce about weekend drives with her family and the smell of her mom’s picnic sandwiches. It’s incredible how a single image can open up such a flood of happy memories.

Music and Personalized Playlists

Personalized music playlists have become a huge hit with residents in our community. Studies show that familiar music can trigger emotional responses and bring comfort to those with memory loss. Using music apps, caregivers create playlists with songs from each resident’s youth or favorite genres, giving them moments of joy and even sparking memories.

Technology may seem like a modern tool, but in memory care Portland, it’s a way to connect residents to the past, the present, and the people they love.

Providing Care for a Loved One With Alzheimer’s Disease

July 24, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

Alzheimer’s is one of those progressive diseases where needs continue to evolve and change, and it is important to address those changes with the appropriate care. The Alzheimer’s Association advises families that there is not a one-size-fits-all formula when it comes to Alzheimer’s care; but rather to take a close look at your own unique family situation. They also say to recognize decisions regarding care are not easy.

Some of the options families may consider include in-home care, respite care, all-day adult centers, hospice care and long-term care. All these choices require time to explore to ensure they provide the level of care a loved one needs. Experts recommend trying to include the person with Alzheimer’s in the decision-making process as much as possible.

The Alzheimer’s Association says often a person in the early stages of the disease can live alone but in the middle stages typically 24/7 care is needed. During the most advanced stages, intensive around-the-clock care is required. If it is time for long-term care, you will want the best care possible. Experts say look for a memory care community that treats the whole person and has an environment in which they can feel independent and safe.

A Place for Mom, an online senior living referral service, offers questions to help decide when it may be time for a family to consider long term-care in a memory community. Some of those questions include:

  • Is your loved one agitated or aggressive?

  • Is your aging relative withdrawn or nervous?

  • Are their hygiene needs met?

  • Does your loved one wander?

  • Are their living conditions safe?

  • Are their medications properly managed?

  • Is your loved one well-nourished?

  • Have you started to feel caregiver burnout?

  • Is caregiving affecting your health?

  • Are you and your family safe?

Along with assisted living, MorningStar at West San Jose offers comprehensive memory care which supports residents with services, wellness programs and activities essential to quality of life. MorningStar’s holistic approach is encompassed under the expanse of possibilities we call “Lavender Sky,” and uses Montessori-based therapy techniques. As dementia care specialists, we feel it is our privilege–our calling–to walk alongside residents and their families during this unexpected and challenging journey. Please contact us or visit our website for more information.

MorningStar at West San Jose Offers Specialized Memory Care

June 14, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

In addition to assisted living, MorningStar at West San Jose provides suites devoted to the care of seniors with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  Our San Jose community is a part of the MorningStar Senior Living company, which was founded in 2003 and has 40+ communities in eleven states either in operation or under construction.

At MorningStar, our approach to memory care is designed around our comprehensive program we call “Lavender Sky.”  Our philosophy encourages us to walk alongside a resident as we thoughtfully enter, embrace and explore the world of dementia.  With insight and intentionality, we enter our memory-impaired residents’ “purple world” to cross over the physical and emotional boundaries that would otherwise separate us. We also educate the families of those afflicted with dementia on how to follow our lead and enter too.

Another important aspect of our unique methodology is to accept the diagnosis of dementia and embrace the fact (we know it is difficult) that this is the path we must take together.  By embracing a deep understanding of the disease, it allows us to embrace the necessary changes in our own communication style as well as physically embrace residents with the power of touch. And most importantly we embrace hope.

Finally, Lavender Sky explores a boundless variety of resourceful and individualized solutions for we recognize that what works today may not work tomorrow.  When memory care residents come to MorningStar at West San Jose, we explore the person’s life including their background, interests and preferences to create a specialized care plan.

As you can see, memory care at our community springs from a deep understanding of the disease and is offered with the utmost love and compassion.   Please contact us or visit our website to learn more about senior living, our staff and the philosophy that guides our care.

Age-Related Memory Loss or Dementia?

December 27, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

Experts report “at least half of those over age 65 say they are more forgetful than they were when they were younger, experiencing ‘senior moments’ of things like where they put things or recalling somebody’s name.” While several studies show as many as 40 percent of seniors suffer from some level of memory loss, this doesn’t necessarily mean Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia.

Doctors say we need to remember Alzheimer’s is not a normal part of aging, and there are some characteristics which separate age-related memory loss from dementia. One example is forgetting how to program your remote control or operate a piece of machinery after not doing it for a while. They stress this is common and typically not a cause for concern but forgetting how to get home or perform routine tasks may be a sign of a bigger problem.

Another symptom of Alzheimer’s or other memory loss diseases is forgetting what an object is used for or what it is. Someone with Alzheimer’s can forget they wear glasses or not recognize the glasses as their own. The same goes for forgetting names. A common problem is to forget a person’s name but a more serious problem is to forget easy words or replace them with something strange, making the person difficult to understand.

However, feeling you are forgetful may be cause for concern according to Dr. Barry Reisberg, director of the Fisher Alzheimer’s Disease Education and Resources Program at New York University Langone Medical Center. In a study in which Dr. Reisberg was involved, the findings showed “seniors with subjective memory complaints are, over many years, 4.5 times more likely to develop mild cognitive impairment or dementia than those who do not have such memory complaints.” Therefore, it is important to talk to your healthcare provider about any worries you may have.

Along with assisted living, MorningStar at West San Jose offers specialized care for those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  Every aspect of our care addresses the needs of our residents starting with the very design of our Reflections Neighborhood to a wide range of wellness programs, activities and healthy, delicious meals.  Please visit our website for more information about our compassionate, loving memory care.

Dealing With Grief

December 25, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

Death is part of life and if we are fortunate to live a long one, most likely we will have to deal with the loss of a beloved spouse, life partner, child, sibling or friend. As loved ones give our lives purpose, coping with their loss and finding new purpose is difficult as many seniors do not have the opportunities to socialize or get out as they once did.

Grief counselors suggest some things a person’s family and friends can do to help them get through the worst of the grief. If it was your parents who died, be sure to let your surviving parents know how much you miss dad or mom, and share memories you have of the good times. Ask your parents if they have more difficult times during the day dealing with the loss as you could come over or give them a call. Also, be sure to not shy away from saying the deceased person’s name.

Offer to do things with them you know they once did with their spouse such as grocery shopping. If dad did the yard work, either offer to do it or help mom hire a company to take care of it. Help your parents find outlets for socializing, and encourage them to pick up an old hobby or find a new one, or take a class.

Being part of a senior living community such as MorningStar at West San Jose can be very supportive and give the person a sense of belonging. Other residents most likely have gone through similar experiences and have a special understanding of what the person is going through.

MorningStar at West San Jose is designed to provide seniors everything they want and need in a retirement home. Along with beautiful surroundings, an array of luxury amenities, hospitality services and five-star dining; we offer Personalized Service Plans for the activities of daily living (ADLs) to help maintain residents’ independence. Things You Can Do to Reduce the Risk of a Fall

November 17, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that each year, one out of every five Americans aged 65 years and older has a fall that results in an injury such as broken bones or a head injury. However, medical professionals say while it is important for seniors to take precautions to prevent falls as injuries can be serious, they also remind us that regardless of how old we are, it is beneficial for our overall health to keep moving. Experts explain that failing to engage in “mild exercise on a regular basis results in reduced muscle strength, decreased bone mass, loss of balance and coordination, and reduced flexibility.”

They go on to say that despite commonly held beliefs, falls are not a normal part of aging and there are things you can do to help keep you on your feet and mitigate the risk of a fall. Their first piece of advice is to talk to your doctor about your risk and prevention. Tell them if you have fallen and discuss your medications to see if side effects include dizziness or sleepiness that could contribute to falls.

While falls are common in seniors 65 years of age and older, individuals with dementia are at an even greater risk. Researchers say there are several reasons for this including gait and balance issues as well as problems concentrating and staying focused on the task at hand. Other issues that may increase the risk of falls include poor eyesight and chronic diseases such as Parkinson’s, and arthritis or numbness in the feet. If you often feel dizzy or lightheaded upon standing or suddenly sitting up, ask your doctor if you might have postural hypotension, and find out how you can alleviate the symptoms.

Further tips to reduce your risk include having your eyes checked annually and updating your glasses when needed. In addition, talk to your doctor about the best footwear for inside the house as well as outside. Check your home for trip hazards (the CDC has a list of tips) and install grab bars in the bathroom. Finally, ask your doctor about exercises to strengthen your leg muscles as well as balance-training exercises to improve balance.

At MorningStar at West San Jose, our new community is designed to accommodate our residents’ every need and to see to their comfort as well as their safety. Each of our suites is equipped with a 24-hour emergency call system, handicap-accessible bathroom and we offer SafelyYou technology which uses artificial intelligence (AI) to detect and prevent falls for memory care residents. We also recognize the importance of exercising, and as such, provide a full calendar of activities that includes a variety of exercise programs. The Difference Between Hospice and Palliative Care

November 10, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

To help those dealing with end-of-life issues, the National Institute on Aging (NIA) explains some of the myths associated with palliative and hospice care including sorting out the difference between the two terms. They explain while they are similar, they do differ in a couple of significant ways.

Palliative care is defined as providing specialized care for those living with a serious illness. Myths linked to palliative care include the person no longer being able to receive care for their disease. The fact is care can be provided for the illness along with curative care. Another myth is the person will no longer be able to see their primary doctor but will only be treated by specialists. NIA says in many cases, the person’s primary provider will work hand-in-hand with specialists.

The intention of palliative care is to improve quality of life as well as provide care to improve help with symptoms. It also helps the patient understand their choices for medical treatment. A palliative care team may be made up of specialized nurses and doctors along with social workers, nutritionists and chaplains. If a time comes when the person’s care team decides treatment is no longer working, palliative care could transition to hospice care if the doctor believes the person is likely to die within six months. Another option is the palliative team would continue to help with the emphasis on providing comfort care.

The NIA explains hospice care provides comfort and quality of life for a person with a serious illness who is facing end of life. The myth surrounding hospice care is the person cannot receive any medications. The truth is a person will receive medications to help manage symptoms but not to treat the disease. Many people think hospice care can only be done in a hospital or nursing facility but experts say it can also be done at home.

Add Protein to Breakfast Helps You Stay Full and Satisfied Longer

November 03, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

How many times have you eaten breakfast, and after an hour or two, you start to feel hungry? Many breakfast options involve foods such as cereals, breads and granola bars that are high in refined grains and sugar. To solve the problem, nutritionists say you should add protein to every meal including your breakfast.

When you eat a breakfast with protein, you feel fuller and more satisfied for a longer period of time and less apt to reach for high-calorie snacks mid-day. Registered dietician, Lisa Jones, explains an adult’s daily intake of protein should be between 10% and 35% of the calories consumed. She adds, “For example, if your nutritional needs call for 2,000 calories daily, you should get 200 to 700 calories from protein, or 50 to 175 grams.”

One suggestion for an easy-to-do, protein-rich breakfast is avocado and fried egg on a bagel or enriched whole-grain slice of toast. Omelets are also fairly easy and can be assembled with a variety of fillings such as mushrooms, spinach and bacon. You can increase the protein in a bowl of oatmeal by adding a scoop of protein powder and topping it with almond milk and berries. Try other creative options such as smoked salmon on a toasted whole wheat English muffin spread with cream cheese, or a Greek yogurt parfait layered with granola, nuts, and fruit. Another incentive for eating protein in the morning is nutritionists say it can help you lose weight as you feel more satisfied for a longer period of time.

A Mobility Aid May Reduce Pain and Help You Feel More Independent

November 01, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

If you have arthritis, heart or lung issues, pain and weakness in the feet and legs, impairment due to a stroke, visual impairment, or other balance problems, a mobility aid can help you feel more independent, reduce pain, and increase confidence. With options available ranging from canes to walkers, wheelchairs, and scooters, you may be wondering which one is best for your needs.

Experts explain that your choice of aids will depend on your disability and/or medical condition. Canes are the most common choice and are good for someone with balance problems. In fact, the journal Medical Nlivingews Today, says that one in 10 adults over the age of 65 uses a cane. However, even here there are decisions to be made. While white canes are reserved for the visually impaired or blind, you may find a four-footed cane with its wider base offers more stability. If you need to shift weight from the wrist to the arm, try a forearm cane.

Walkers, also called Zimmer frames, provide stability and are used by an estimated 4.6 percent of people in the country over the age of 65. Along with the basic walker, styles include rollators that have four wheels, handlebars and a seat. Knee walkers are like a rollator but have a padded cushion to rest a knee on while the stronger leg moves it forward. Walker-cane hybrids are another option that offers better support than a standard cane.

For more severe disabilities or to move longer distances, a wide range of wheelchairs and scooters are available. If mobility problems are long-term, modifications to your home may also be necessary. Regardless of what mobility aid you decide on, doctors recommend making an appointment with your healthcare provider or physical therapist to learn how to use the new device properly.
