Providing Care for a Loved One With Alzheimer’s Disease

July 24, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

Alzheimer’s is one of those progressive diseases where needs continue to evolve and change, and it is important to address those changes with the appropriate care. The Alzheimer’s Association advises families that there is not a one-size-fits-all formula when it comes to Alzheimer’s care; but rather to take a close look at your own unique family situation. They also say to recognize decisions regarding care are not easy.

Some of the options families may consider include in-home care, respite care, all-day adult centers, hospice care and long-term care. All these choices require time to explore to ensure they provide the level of care a loved one needs. Experts recommend trying to include the person with Alzheimer’s in the decision-making process as much as possible.

The Alzheimer’s Association says often a person in the early stages of the disease can live alone but in the middle stages typically 24/7 care is needed. During the most advanced stages, intensive around-the-clock care is required. If it is time for long-term care, you will want the best care possible. Experts say look for a memory care community that treats the whole person and has an environment in which they can feel independent and safe.

A Place for Mom, an online senior living referral service, offers questions to help decide when it may be time for a family to consider long term-care in a memory community. Some of those questions include:

  • Is your loved one agitated or aggressive?

  • Is your aging relative withdrawn or nervous?

  • Are their hygiene needs met?

  • Does your loved one wander?

  • Are their living conditions safe?

  • Are their medications properly managed?

  • Is your loved one well-nourished?

  • Have you started to feel caregiver burnout?

  • Is caregiving affecting your health?

  • Are you and your family safe?

Along with assisted living, MorningStar at West San Jose offers comprehensive memory care which supports residents with services, wellness programs and activities essential to quality of life. MorningStar’s holistic approach is encompassed under the expanse of possibilities we call “Lavender Sky,” and uses Montessori-based therapy techniques. MorningStar at West San Jose Offers Specialized Memory Care

June 14, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

In addition to assisted living, MorningStar at West San Jose provides suites devoted to the care of seniors with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  Our San Jose community is a part of the MorningStar Senior Living company, which was founded in 2003 and has 40+ communities in eleven states either in operation or under construction.

At MorningStar, our approach to memory care is designed around our comprehensive program we call “Lavender Sky.”  Our philosophy encourages us to walk alongside a resident as we thoughtfully enter, embrace and explore the world of dementia.  With insight and intentionality, we enter our memory-impaired residents’ “purple world” to cross over the physical and emotional boundaries that would otherwise separate us. We also educate the families of those afflicted with dementia on how to follow our lead and enter too.

Another important aspect of our unique methodology is to accept the diagnosis of dementia and embrace the fact (we know it is difficult) that this is the path we must take together.  By embracing a deep understanding of the disease, it allows us to embrace the necessary changes in our own communication style as well as physically embrace residents with the power of touch. And most importantly we embrace hope.

Finally, Lavender Sky explores a boundless variety of resourceful and individualized solutions for we recognize that what works today may not work tomorrow.  When memory care residents come to MorningStar at West San Jose, we explore the person’s life including their background, interests and preferences to create a specialized care plan.

As you can see, memory care at our community springs from a deep understanding of the disease and is offered with the utmost love and compassion.   Please contact us or visit our website to learn more about senior living, our staff and the philosophy that guides our care.

MorningStar is guided by a culture rooted in our mission of honoring God, valuing seniors, and investing in our team, which allows us to deliver services with warmth, sincerity and depth of purpose. Numbers That Provide a View of Heart Health

April 19, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

Julie Corliss, Executive Editor, Harvard Heart Letter published an article on the five important numbers which provide an overall view of hearth health and what the target numbers should be. While these are specific recommendations, Ms. Corliss also says the ideal values are good goals for most people but your doctor may suggest different numbers based on your age and other health conditions.

Current recommended blood pressure numbers are less than 120/80 mm Hg. Systolic blood pressure is the first number and diastolic blood pressure the second number, and together they measure how hard your heart is working and the condition of your blood vessels. High blood pressure (HBP) can damage blood vessels and increase a person’s risk for a stroke or heart attack.

Your LDL cholesterol numbers should be less than 70 mg/dL and your triglycerides less than 150 mg/dL. A cholesterol test is done through a blood draw after a person has fasted and if both your numbers are high, it increases your risk for a heart attack or stroke. Another important number is your blood sugar levels, which is how diabetes is typically diagnosed. Doctors say blood sugar levels should be less than 100 mg/dL.

Finally, the last number you should pay attention to for better health is your waistline measurement. Experts say the circumference should be either lower than: less than half your height in inches; or for women less than 35 inches, and for men less than 40 inches. The problem with big numbers is what doctors call “abdominal or visceral obesity” typically an indication of fat surrounding the internal organs. Use a tape measure placed just above your navel (belly button) to get your number.

Ms. Corliss goes on to give universal advice to improve all the measures of heart health.  She states “Eating a healthy, plant-based diet can help. Regular exercise also helps; aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise like brisk walking most days. Other lifestyle habits that can lower your heart disease risk include getting seven to eight hours of sleep nightly and managing your stress level.”

Eating Healthier Rather than Dieting is Best for Overall Health

November 20, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

While losing weight is tough, for many of us, the real battle is keeping the weight off. Caroline Thomason, RD, CDCES, a dietitian and diabetes educator based in Washington, D.C., explains there is a growing body of evidence showing that when we focus on higher-quality nutrition, not only does our weight improve but also our health. Changing to a diet with more vegetables and fruits means you will take in fewer calories than you previously did, allowing weight loss to naturally take place. An improved diet results in better health.

One of the biggest problems with “dieting” is that a person too often focuses on calorie content without regard to nutritional value.” Experts say this makes sticking to a calorie restrictive diet harder. Once we include nutritional foods in our day-to-day diet, it makes us feel fuller and even lets us eat more while taking in fewer calories.

Another thing about a life-long nutritional diet filled with fruits and vegetables, plant-based proteins and whole-foods is it promotes better health and quality of life as you age. Research shows people who eat better have a lower risk of many chronic diseases. Furthermore, dietitians say it is never too late to adopt healthier eating patterns. By simply changing diet, many people are able to lower high-blood pressure and cholesterol as well as reverse diabetes.

Doctors agree adopting good eating habits that are permanent is what counts rather than short-term diets. Along with diet; exercise, sleep and stress management are all important for better health.

The Difference Between Hospice and Palliative Care

November 10, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

To help those dealing with end-of-life issues, the National Institute on Aging (NIA) explains some of the myths associated with palliative and hospice care including sorting out the difference between the two terms. They explain while they are similar, they do differ in a couple of significant ways.

Palliative care is defined as providing specialized care for those living with a serious illness. Myths linked to palliative care include the person no longer being able to receive care for their disease. The fact is care can be provided for the illness along with curative care. Another myth is the person will no longer be able to see their primary doctor but will only be treated by specialists. NIA says in many cases, the person’s primary provider will work hand-in-hand with specialists.

The intention of palliative care is to improve quality of life as well as provide care to improve help with symptoms. It also helps the patient understand their choices for medical treatment. A palliative care team may be made up of specialized nurses and doctors along with social workers, nutritionists and chaplains. If a time comes when the person’s care team decides treatment is no longer working, palliative care could transition to hospice care if the doctor believes the person is likely to die within six months. Another option is the palliative team would continue to help with the emphasis on providing comfort care.

The NIA explains hospice care provides comfort and quality of life for a person with a serious illness who is facing end of life. The myth surrounding hospice care is the person cannot receive any medications. The truth is a person will receive medications to help manage symptoms but not to treat the disease. Many people think hospice care can only be done in a hospital or nursing facility but experts say it can also be done at home.

Playing Games can be Good for Your Brain

August 14, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

While there is a long-held belief memory loss and aging are inevitable, we can actually help keep our brains sharp. A number of studies show our brains continue to build new connections, and engaging in activities that challenge us, can lead to sustained brain development and offer new ways to approach challenges.

The most effective puzzles and games linked to a reduced risk of dementia are those requiring critical thinking, problem-solving and memory recall. Patrick Porter, Ph.D, a neuroscience expert and founder of BrainTap, explains “These activities stimulate the brain by challenging it to find patterns, make connections, and think creatively. They require mental flexibility and encourage the brain to adapt and reorganize neural networks, enhancing cognitive reserve.”

To get the most benefit from mental activities, the experts say it is best to vary the type of games we play. Shifting from games that rely on speed, rapid decision making or memory help strengthen and tap into multiple ways to engage the brain. Studies show it is important to keep challenging ourselves and pushing the bar toward more difficult activities. Another thing to keep in mind is the studies linking socialization to a decrease in dementia. So before you jump on the computer for some brain games, think about putting together a group of friends to play a game of trivia with you or to piece together a puzzle.

The MorningStar at Laurelhurst assisted living and memory care community is designed to provide seniors with everything they want and need in a retirement home including meaningful, fun programs and activities. Make Time Each Day to Practice Self-care

August 09, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

Most of us experience some level of stress whether it is just once in a while or something that bothers us on a more frequent basis. If you want to know how to handle stress better, Dr. Shalu Ramchandani, an integrative medicine specialist at the Harvard-affiliated Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, recommends following good health habits. These include eating a predominantly plant-based diet, exercising on a regular basis, sleeping at least seven hours a night and staying socially connected.

Another beneficial habit to reduce stress is to practice self-care, which is simply taking time out of your day to do something that makes you feel good. Experts recommend one of the top self-care habits is to practice mindfulness. This is as easy as taking 10 very slow breaths in and out whenever you feel stressed. Another technique is to picture yourself in a favorite, peaceful place like the beach or quiet woodland.

Self-care habits can include taking a walk out in nature, practicing yoga, taking a bath or doing some stretches before bedtime. Some people feel a sense of calm using aromatherapy with scents known to be calming like lavender, rose, bergamot and frankincense. Lighting a room using candles or getting a massage can also be effective.

Research finds watching a movie or an episode of a comedy show that makes us laugh can additionally reduce our stress hormones. For others, listening to soothing music may be calming. If coffee or caffeinated drinks make you feel jittery or anxious, cut back and replace with decaffeinated substitutes or drink water or natural fruit juices. If nothing seems to help, and your stress and anxiety levels are not improving, consult your healthcare provider.

MorningStar at Laurelhurst assisted living and memory care community provides senior care and hospitality services as well as an array of luxury amenities. To encourage residents to stay engaged physically, intellectually, spiritually and socially, we offer a complement of wellness programs and activities. MEMORY CARE COMMUNITY IN PORTLAND, OR DESIGNED FOR SENIORS’ SAFETY

July 05, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

You have many factors to consider before deciding which assisted living facility in Portland, Oregon is the best option for a loved one. Selecting a senior living community that emphasizes providing a safe and secure living environment should be at the top of the list of factors. You want to find the assisted living facility that does the best job of protecting your loved one.

One of the many reasons why MorningStar at Laurelhurst receives positive reviews is our unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and security of our residents. Let’s find out how a senior living facility should be designed for seniors’ safety.

Around-the-Clock Monitoring System

One of the most important reasons for moving a loved one into a senior living community concerns placing your loved one’s safety and security into the well-trained hands of a team of experienced caregivers. Our team members spend considerable time getting to know each resident, which means they notice even the smallest changes in mood and other behavioral patterns. The personal touch of monitoring performed by our caregivers is supported by an around-the-clock electronic monitoring system, which includes a large network of highly sophisticated security cameras.

Design Elements Dedicated to Safety

The assisted living and memory care community where your loved one moves to should feature design elements that foster a safe and secure living environment. Design features such as wider hallways, slip-resistant floors, and handrails placed in rooms and hallways help prevent accidents that can cause serious injuries. Walk-in showers, as well as easy-to-access door handles and light switches, also represent design elements that create a safer and more secure living environment for seniors. Design elements that prevent falling are an especially important part of a safety and security plan, as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports more than three million seniors each year receive treatment in emergency rooms for fall injuries.

Enhanced Protections Against Infections

With seniors considered the most vulnerable age group to infections, you should choose an assisted living and memory care community that has implemented a thorough disinfectant program. The COVID-19 pandemic, which ravaged assisted living facilities around the world, makes sanitation a top priority for our community. Our team of caregivers ensures all surfaces receive the application of a natural disinfectant that kills both the Norovirus and Coronavirus, as well as eliminates allergens. In addition, MorningStar at Laurelhurst follows all protocols established by the CDC, such as wearing personal protection equipment (PPE).

Comprehensive Emergency Plan

Natural disasters like floods, earthquakes, hurricanes, and tornadoes can negatively impact any type of structure, especially the ones that house seniors. Senior living facilities must follow the disaster response guidelines created by state, local, and federal government agencies. However, far too many assisted living facilities do not practice responding to an emergency. A comprehensive emergency response plan must include drills that educate residents to respond properly to emergencies.

MorningStar at Laurelhurst: We Make Safety Our Top Priority

We want you to gain peace of mind when you decide to move your loved one into our assisted facility in Portland, OR. The most effective way to help you achieve peace of mind is to ensure the safety of your senior loved one. Learn more about the safety and security features at our senior living community by scheduling a tour of MorningStar at Laurelhurst.

6 SIGNS OF A GREAT MEMORY CARE COMMUNITY

July 05, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

Diminished memory can make completing simple daily tasks a highly frustrating exercise for a loved one. When memory diminishes enough to pose serious threats to a loved one’s health, the time has arrived to consider a memory care community. What do you look for that defines a great memory care facility?
At our assisted living facility in Portland, Oregon, we present six signs of agreat memory care community.

Staff Gets to Know Residents

Before you arrange for a loved one to move into our senior living facility, we conduct an in-depth interview to get to know your loved one. Once moved into our assisted living facility in Portland, the team of caregivers assigned to interact with your loved one keeps track of your loved one’s cognitive and memory skill levels.

Low Staff-to-Resident Ratio

Your senior loved one deserves the most comprehensive care and at MorningStar, we foster close caregiver interactions with our residents by not overwhelming our team with responsibilities. We offer a low staff-to-resident ratio of memory care professionals that exhibit compassion and empathy. Personalized memory care is one of the most important attributes to consider for an assisted living facility.

Encourages Independence

You should look for a memory care community that encourages independence, such as allowing residents to determine when they go to bed and wake up. Residents should be able to enjoy their bathing preferences, as well as participate in activities based on their interests, not a one-size-fits-all approach taken by other assisted living facilities.

Five-Star Amenities

The memory care community that is the best match for your senior loved one should offer amenities that support participation in a wide variety of hobbies and activities. This is an especially important sign for memory care patients since they should engage in hobbies and activities like chess and checkers that stimulate the brain.

Simple Design Elements

Memory careresidents can feel overwhelmed with cognitive challenges, such as remembering the location of the dining area. Search for a senior living facility that includes simple design features to create an ambiance your senior loved one feels comfortable with when navigating the facility. For example, different wall colors for different sections of a facility can help a memory care patient remember where to go for certain activities.

Active Social Calendar

One of the proven ways to boost cognitive and memory skills for seniors involves encouraging them to interact in social settings. Although the level of care represents the most element of an assisted living facility in Portland. OR, getting your senior loved one to participate in social events comes in a close second. Regular social interactions not only can boost memory, but also can alleviate boredom, anxiety, and even depression.

Outstanding Memory Care for MorningStar Residents

At the MorningStar Senior Living Facility in Portland, we offer three lifestyle options for our residents that include memory care. MorningStar at Laurelhurst is recognized for creating a superior assisted living environment for seniors at different stages of their golden years. Located in the historic Laurelhurst District, our facility covers 146,000 square feet that includes 83 assisted living suites. ASSISTED LIVING VS. MEMORY CARE: WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES?

June 07, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

Finding the right senior living facility for a loved one can be a stressful experience, especially if the loved one lives with a medical condition that makes it difficult to live independently. Assisted living and memory care facilities offer support for residents that live with a wide variety of health issues, including medical conditions in which a resident suffers from some form of cognitive impairment.

However, memory care facilities specialize in helping residents cope with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Caregivers trained to address the physical and psychological impacts of severe cognitive impairments provide around-the-clock services to ensure the highest quality of life for residents. Assisted living facilities in Portland, Oregon provide services that target specific lifestyle needs, such as grooming and household chores.

For many residents, it makes sense to live in an assisted living facility and as cognitive impairments develop, transition to amemory care facilityfor more intensive support. MorningStar at Laurelhurst is a senior living residence that provides both assisted living andmemory care services. Four criteria define the major differences between assisted living and memory care services.

Safety

Although both assisted living and memory care residents live in super-safe environments, memory care facilities place more emphasis on environmental security features. Assisted living communities offer security features such as daily check-ins and room emergency alert systems. On the other hand, a prototype memory care home has obscured exits, keypad-enabled entrances, and a doorbell system that alerts staff to people entering and exiting the building.

Caregiver Training

Caregivers at assisted living and memory care facilities should have undergone extensive training before assuming their roles. Memory care staff provides support 24 hours a day that helps residents maintain a quality of life while dealing with a rapid decline in cognitive skills. Caregivers at memory care facilities have mastered the skill of managing the most difficult dementia behaviors such as aggression and wandering.

Activities

Assisted living facilities plan activities for active seniors who need minor support with daily tasks. This means residents of assisted living facilities participate in more planned social events, such as cookouts, day trips, and guest speaker presentations. Memory care facilities offer group and individual activities that are specially created for seniors living with significant memory loss. The goal of the activities is to improve the cognitive skills of residents living with some form of dementia or stage of Alzheimer’s disease.

Cost

Many of the same factors determine the cost of an assisted living and a memory care facility, such as location, room size, and type of amenities. Assisted care facilities in Portland typically charge a monthly rate that covers room and board, weekly housekeeping, three daily meals, and transportation to and from healthcare appointments. The median monthly cost for a one-bedroom at an assisted living facility ran $4,500 in 2021, as opposed to a median monthly rate for a memory care facility room of $5,430. Memory care facilities offer specialized care and nursing services that make rooms more expensive.

MorningStar operates on the principle of “To honor, to serve, to invest.” Located in the greater Portland area, MorningStar at Laurelhurst offers resort-style amenities surrounded by beautiful natural attractions. We offer both assisted living and memory care services, which makes our facility ideal for residents that might have to transition to more intensive care and targeted services in a caring environment.

THE EFFECTS OF SLEEP ON ALZHEIMER’S AND DEMENTIA

June 02, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

Countless studies have proven a direct link between sleep and positive health consequences. What is not as well-known concerns the impact sleep has on developing dementia and Alzheimer’s symptoms.

Can a lack of sleep cause dementia or Alzheimer’s?

At MorningStar Assisted Living & Memory Care at Laurelhurst, our caregivers emphasize the importance of developing a healthy sleep pattern, as well as offering tips to improve a senior’s quality of sleep.

What is the Link Between Sleep Deprivation and Dementia/Alzheimer’s?

Did you know that just one night of poor sleep can trigger mental health issues the next day? One study establishes the direct link between sleep deprivation and dementia. The study demonstrated that people who get fewer than four hours of sleep per night struggle more with learning, thinking, and memory. Another research study indicates sleep deprivation can increase the risk of developing dementia systems by more than 20 percent.

Scientists are just starting to discover the connection between poor sleep habits and brain changes that lead to early-stage Alzheimer’s disease. Since more than 60 percent of seniors live with some type of chronic sleep disorder, additional studies might help researchers determine how seniors afflicted with poor sleep patterns can reverse their mental health struggles. A few initial research studies suggest that poor sleep contributes to the production of abnormal beta-amyloid protein levels in the brain. This leads to the production of amyloid plaque found in patients suffering from early-stage Alzheimer’s disease.

At our senior living and memory care facility in Portland, we help seniors struggling to sleep restfully learn more about living a healthier lifestyle.

Tips to Help Seniors Get a Good Night’s Sleep

Improving sleep starts with settling into a consistent schedule. Going to bed at different times during the week makes it difficult for the body to determine when the time is right for starting the sleep cycle. Another factor to consider concerns environmental issues. Instead of playing a game or researching a topic on a computer before bed, consider reading a book to slow the body’s rhythm to the point when it knows the time has come to slowly reach the first stage of the sleep cycle. Turn off the lights before bed to create a sleep conducive environment.

Quiet, dark, and relatively cool represent three important environmental factors to establish before bedtime. We tend to become more sensitive to light and sounds as we age, which means the presence of both factors can lead to developing a disruptive sleep pattern. Move clocks out of view to help resist the temptation to check the time if you do not immediately fall asleep. Playing relaxing music or downloading an app of your favorite soothing sound also can induce healthy sleep.

Diet also plays an important role in determining the quality of sleep. Limit the amount of caffeine ingested throughout the day and lay off caffeine completely at least six hours before bedtime. Eliminate the consumption of sugary foods, as well as a diet high in refined carbs such as pasta, white rice, and French fries. Although a nutritious snack a couple of hours before bedtime is a good idea, eating a big meal before it is time for sleep can lead to indigestion. Since many seniors get up during the night to use the bathroom, limit the intake of liquids at least three hours before bedtime.

MorningStar’s senior living facilities across the United States encourage our residents to thrive in an independent living environment. To learn more about MorningStar Assisted Living & Memory Care at Laurelhurst, submit the short online form and one of our representatives will connect with you.

MorningStar at West San Jose Offers a Healthy, Engaged Lifestyle

May 22, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, almost one-third of all seniors live by themselves. In terms of numbers, that’s nearly 14 million seniors. Experts say living alone doesn’t necessarily mean an individual is lonely, but it often is the case. Social isolation is often a result of having a spouse and/or other supportive friends or relatives die, or suffering from chronic illness. Other related problems include a lack of transportation or mobility impairment which all limit the senior’s opportunity to engage with others.

Whatever the cause of loneliness, research shows it takes a toll on people. In fact, a study from Brigham Young University reports loneliness can be as deadly as smoking or obesity. Study authors explain senior isolation “may complicate existing conditions, encourage an unhealthy lifestyle, and affect cognition.”

The American Psychiatric Association says seniors who report feelings of loneliness are more susceptible to depression and poor health habits including excessive drinking, smoking and lack of exercise. Research from the Rush Institute for Healthy Aging found the “risk of Alzheimer’s nearly doubled in lonely adults, and mental decline was faster.”

Senior living communities like the new MorningStar at West San Jose provide assisted living residents a lifestyle that focuses on wellness, comfort and community. Along with extensive care services, we offer a broad range of wellness programs and activities designed to enhance physical, intellectual, spiritual, and social connectivity. Programs range from physical exercise classes to art classes, trivia and card games, clubs and more. We tell residents if we do not offer something you wish to pursue, start a club and encourage others to join.

Assisted living residents receive a range of services such as 24/7 care managers, certified med care managers and scheduled health & wellness evaluations. A licensed nurse is onsite during weekdays and on-call 24/7. Furthermore, MorningStar helps families arrange auxiliary care services to deal with other health concerns on an as needed basis.

We believe every moment you are alive is an opportunity to grow, set new goals, dream new dreams, and do better. MorningStar is committed to excellence and helping seniors have better lives. Visit our website for more information on trusted assisted living and memory care in San Jose, CA.

Compassionate Memory Care at MorningStar of Idaho Falls

May 15, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

MorningStar of Idaho Falls’ goal is to provide the best senior living in the area, which includes compassionate memory care for those in the early onset of Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia right through to the most advanced stages. We understand the devastation families feel when they get a diagnosis of a dementia disease. The path going forward is unplanned for, and we consider it our privilege – our calling to walk alongside the memory-impaired and their family on their unexpected journey.

In addition to MorningStar of Idaho Falls’ independent and assisted living options, our Reflections Neighborhood consists of 28 memory care suites. The area is specifically designed to be secure but still allow residents the freedom to move safely about their spacious surroundings. Also, given the nature of dementia, residents pay one price for their suite and their care regardless of the level of memory loss.

As dementia care experts, our unique approach and philosophy to caring for those afflicted with the disease is called “Lavender Sky.” We know the essence of the person remains despite the level of memory loss, and our job is to nurture and support the individual by finding ways to calm or stimulate as the situation demands. Lavender Sky provides the path for us to enter, embrace, and explore the “purple world” of memory loss, and to cross over the physical, emotional, and relational boundaries that would otherwise separate us.

Every aspect of our home is designed to provide the comfort, wellness and safety our special residents require, including mealtimes. We know those suffering from memory loss can sometimes have compromised abilities at the table. We address this by providing a selection of finger foods, texture-modified diets (mechanical soft and puréed, thickened liquids), and easy-to-recognize balanced meals that taste as good as they look. Please see our website or contact us for more information.

MorningStar is guided by a culture rooted in our mission of honoring God, valuing seniors, and investing in our team, which allows us to deliver services with warmth, sincerity and depth of purpose. We have built a reputation for creating homes filled with an atmosphere of love and community. Please contact us to learn more about

Families Can Sometimes Become Overprotective of Aging Loved Ones

May 10, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

We all understand the value of independence but as we grow older, many seniors are faced with physical and mental limitations that make them feel it may be threatened. Independence is one of the few things seniors want to feel they still have control over; and is important as it is closely tied to self-worth and a sense of achievement.

Experts say well-intentional families can sometimes create bigger problems by becoming overprotective toward mom or dad. This can result in the senior becoming more fearful than the situation warrants, and erode their self-esteem and confidence. Another problem threatening a senior’s independence is when adult children talk to the parent as if they are a child. Even the most conscientious caregivers can sometimes baby the person way too much or pressure them to do what they think is best.

Just as we do not want people telling us what to do or intruding into things we are not ready to share, you need to respect your parents’ privacy. When mom or dad’s wishes are respected, they will feel like they have more control of their lives. If a time comes when your parents’ need more help than they can get at home, it may be time to look into an assisted living community. Just be sure it is one where they will be respected and their independence will be nurtured.

If you are exploring assisted living, MorningStar of Idaho Falls is one you should put on the top of your list. Providing the area’s finest independent living, assisted living and memory care, we are on the southeast side of town and close to the Idaho Regional Medical Center, Mountain View Hospital, shopping, restaurants and the beautiful Idaho Falls River Walk. Please contact us for more information and be sure to ask about our move-in specials.

5 Memory Care Activities for Seniors Who Prefer to Be Alone

January 04, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

As people age, they may begin to experience memory loss and other cognitive decline. This can be a difficult time for both the individual and their family members. One of the best things that you can do is to find activities that are safe for seniors in memory care.

The following activities can be done alongside other people, but they are also great for seniors who prefer tranquility and would rather enjoy their activities and hobbies on their own

Reading

Reading is an activity that is beneficial for both the mind and the soul. It can be a great way for someone in memory care to learn new information or just relax and enjoy a good story. Reading is not only mentally stimulating, but it can also help to decrease stress levels and provide emotional stimulation. Reading can also help to improve language and communication skills as well as strengthen comprehension and retention. For seniors who may be struggling with reading, books on tape or large print books can be a great option.

Working On a Computer

Computers are becoming increasingly popular amongst seniors. Not only are they useful for tasks like managing finances, but they can also provide entertainment and educational opportunities. Many senior programs offer classes and tutorials in basic computer skills. For those in memory care, working on the computer can help to stimulate the mind, encourage problem-solving skills, and foster self-confidence.

Art Therapy

Art therapy has long been used as a way to help individuals in memory care reconnect with their emotions and find peace. Painting, drawing, sculpting, and other forms of art offer the chance for expression. The creative process can help seniors in memory care to reduce stress, boost self-esteem, and find a form of escape from the everyday.

Music Therapy

Music therapy is another popular activity for seniors, whether it’s in memory care or in senior living communities . Studies have shown that music can have an impact on mood and memory, so playing and listening to music can be a great way for seniors to connect with themselves and the world around them. Music can also help to reduce stress and increase relaxation.

Journaling

Journaling is an excellent way for seniors in memory care to practice self-reflection. Writing down thoughts and feelings can help to foster creative expression and can also provide a safe outlet for any stress or anxiety that the individual may be feeling. Journaling can also help to preserve memories and provide a sense of order and clarity in life.
