Nearly Half of People Over Seventy-Five Have Hearing Loss

September 22, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

The National Institute of Health reports approximately one in three people between the ages of 65 and 74 has hearing loss and nearly half of those older than 75 have difficulty hearing. Hearing loss causes someone a range of problems including difficulty understanding and following a doctor’s advice, responding to safety warnings, and hearing doorbells, phone calls, and alarms. Another all-too common problem is it can be hard to follow conversations with family and friends, and many start avoiding situations where they may be frustrated or embarrassed.

Medical experts advise asking your primary care physician for a referral to an otolaryngologist, an audiologist or a hearing aid specialist. An otolaryngologist is a doctor who specializes in diagnosing and treating diseases of the ear, nose, and throat. They will try to determine the cause of your hearing loss and treatment options. They may refer you to an audiologist who is trained in measuring the degree of loss as well as recommend treatment, which may include fitting you for a hearing aid. There are three different types of hearing aids and it may take some trial and error to find one that works for you (most can be purchased for a trial period).

In some cases, doctors may recommend Cochlear implants, small electronic devices surgically implanted in the inner ear that help provide a sense of sound to people who are profoundly deaf or hard-of-hearing.  Other treatment options include hearing assistive devices for your phones to amplify sound; closed circuit systems for churches or theaters; and lip or speech reading classes.

At MorningStar at West San Jose, our beautiful community offers a host of amenities, care services and wellness programs as well as activities to live life to the fullest.  Opening this fall, MorningStar will have 69 private assisted living suites in a choice of floor plans and configurations.  In addition, our Reflections Neighborhood will offer 34 memory care suites devoted to the individualized care of those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  Please contact us or visit our website for more information.

Community Living is Often Healthier for Seniors

September 11, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Independent Living

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reports about 14.7 million seniors live alone. We know various causes including chronic and worsening health conditions, hearing loss, no longer driving, mobility issues, loss of a spouse or other loved ones can result in loneliness and isolation for older adults on their own.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says, “Social isolation and loneliness in older adults are serious public health risks affecting a significant number of people in the United States, and puts them at risk for dementia and other serious medical conditions.” They cite statistics showing social isolation significantly increases a person’s risk of premature death, and rivals those of smoking, obesity, and physical inactivity. Moreover, studies find social isolation is associated with approximately a 50% increased risk of dementia, a 29% increased risk of heart disease and a 32% increased risk of stroke. The CDC also warns loneliness is linked to higher risk of depression, suicide and anxiety.

Housing for independent seniors offers older adults a built-in community of people at a similar stage of life as well as a variety of social activities that appeal to many tastes and preferences. The range of amenities and activities make it easy for residents to interact with others and to forge new friendships. Another advantage to 55+ independent living communities is the entire place is designed to accommodate the needs of seniors. This includes apartments with wheelchair accessible doorways, low thresholds, well-lit spaces, handrails, walk-in showers and tubs in bathrooms, and emergency call systems.

At MorningStar of Idaho Falls, we provide all the comforts of home with stylish apartments and graciously appointed common areas. Make Changes in Your Behaviors and Attitudes for a Happier, Longer Life

September 08, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

It is never too late to improve our health and making changes in our behaviors and attitudes can mean living a happier, longer life. Doctors say getting your weight under control, quitting smoking, eating more fruits and vegetables, and exercising can all significantly improve your health and longevity at any age.

Remember taking care of our health also includes our brains. Experts used to believe the brain could not make new neuron connections as we aged but research now shows the “brain remains nimble and capable of physical change and growth throughout life.” In fact, studies find people who step out of their comfort zone and try new hobbies and interests can improve their cognitive health.

Another misconception is thinking it is too late to start exercising or to lose weight. A meta-analysis of 39 studies on aging and resistance-type exercises such as lifting weights or using exercise bands, found it is possible to build muscle mass no matter what age. In the studies,  “1,300 adults over the age of 50 who did some form of this kind of training, muscle mass increased by an average of nearly 2.5 pounds in just five months.”

Being positive is a trait that helps people deal more effectively with stress and worry and is linked to longevity. Researchers also find it is better for us to be in charge of our own medical care. One way to do this is to stay up-to-date on medical research and advice regarding care options as well as asking pertinent questions of our healthcare providers. Other things we can do to protect our health are to get appropriate screenings and tests, use our time productively and stay socially engaged.

MorningStar of Idaho Falls is a 55+ community that offers seniors a lifestyle of comfort, wellbeing and as much or as little social engagement as you want. Our range of onsite amenities, care services, wellness programs and activities are designed for stress-free retirement years. Please contact us for pricing and availability on unsurpassed senior living at MorningStar.

MorningStar takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003.  We believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless; and we act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof. Tips for Reducing Sugar Intake for Seniors

September 06, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in retirement communities

Since processed foods, artificial sweeteners, and sugary desserts have become more common, the amount of sugar Americans consume each day has steadily risen over the past few decades. This is especially true and worrisome for seniors. Because of medications, or the changing taste preferences over time, it may be difficult for seniors to know how much sugar they are consuming daily. At MorningStar at Laurelhurst, we believe it is important to advocate for the health of seniors. Through producing heart-healthy meals rich in whole fruits and vegetables, our retirement homes in Portland encourage the reducing added sugars in seniors’ snacks and meals.

Consuming too much sugar leads to debilitating health conditions like obesity and diabetes. Seniors living alone may consume many processed and fast foods as they become older and everyday activities like cooking and grocery shopping become more difficult. Free sugars, or added sugar, in processed meals and other foods, are the main perpetrators that contribute to many Americans overindulging in empty calories unknowingly. If you believe this has become an issue for your senior parent or loved one, consider an assisted living community with executive chefs dedicated to senior health and wellness who combats the habit of consuming processed meals and beverages.

Not all sugars are bad sugars. Sugar found in fruit is highly beneficial, especially for seniors. If you are trying to reduce your sugar intake, consider a diet high in whole fruits and vegetables. The added fiber in these foods aids in digestion and a healthy gut microbiome while still delivering rich tastes.

A wide range of processed foods, such as condiments, salad dressings, canned beverages, smoothies, and dairy products contain more sugar than we may think. While consuming these in moderation is fine, it is important to be mindful of the hidden sugars within these processed goods. Making salad dressings and smoothies from scratch greatly limits the amount of added sugar. Our Chefs at MorningStar Senior Living are trained in how best to modify menus and recipes to accommodate diets and changing needs to produce homemade, healthier options of the foods you love.

Avoid Senior Isolation at MorningStar’s Best Retirement Homes in Portland, Oregon

August 28, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Retirement Home

Everyone thrives off of regular social interaction. Being social, pursuing hobbies, and staying connected to our community keeps us in good mental health. However, for many seniors, these activities become daunting or difficult. If a senior you know struggles with social isolation due to decreased mobility, lack of access to their community, or experiences mental health issues, a comprehensive senior living community will benefit from senior isolation. By staying active, maintaining connections, and exploring new opportunities, seniors can lead fulfilling lives with meaningful social interactions. Come explore MorningStar at Laurelhurst, where seniors can avoid isolation and experience the best retirement homes in Portland, Oregon.

Decreased mobility, the death of a loved one, or social anxiety can inhibit a senior’s happiness and connection to their community. If a senior is reclusive or stuck within their home 80 percent of the time, their overall health and happiness is greatly diminished. Keeping this in mind, MorningStar has crafted a senior living community nestled within the Laurelhurst District of Portland, Oregon. With many chaperoned community excursions, MorningStar at Laurelhurst gives long-time residents of the historic area a way to remain in familiar surroundings near friends and family.

Not only are there plenty of chances to experience the community of Laurelhurst District, but there is a lively and friendly community within MorningStar’s retirement homes in Portland, OR. Here, seniors engage in creative pursuits daily. MorningStar offers seniors a comfortable and encouraging place for seniors to pursue their hobbies and interests with like-minded individuals. If a senior is interested in exploring new hobbies, our directors create new community events and activities monthly to keep seniors active and engaged.

We Take These Major Steps to Better Mental Health At MorningStar Senior Living

August 25, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

While many seniors bask in the joy of retirement, others find it isolating, debilitating, and difficult. Senior mental health can be impacted by memory care issues, the death of a loved one, loss of mobility, and feelings of exclusion from their community. If you have noticed emotional changes in your senior loved one, take these major steps to improve mental health in seniors by relocating to a lively retirement home. If you are looking for the best assisted living Portland, Oregon has to offer seniors, MorningStar at Laurelhurst provides an active senior living community designed to improve overall mental well-being.

Active Assisted Living in Portland

Feeling a lack of community and support causes poor mental health in seniors. Finding a senior living community that encourages active involvement will help elders feel emersed in their community and find belonging. MorningStar at Laurelhurst combats feelings of loneliness and isolation by encouraging social participation in clubs and community activities like fitness classes, cooking classes, music therapy, and field trips.

Individualized Senior Care

It is difficult to treat every senior for the same mental health concerns. In fact, MorningStar at Laurelhurst looks down on this senior care approach. Individualized senior care takes individual preferences, interests, and needs into account for each senior at MorningStar. Getting to know our residents and their needs fosters a sense of autonomy, purpose, and emotional well-being within our community. In doing so, we can evaluate when a senior’s needs or interests change abruptly. If a resident who loves gardening no longer cares to water their plants in the community garden, we can assess if a senior’s mental health is hindered in some way.

Balanced and Nutritious Meals

Seniors in need of assisted living care often stop cooking for themselves in their own homes. This can lead to malnutrition, excessive weight loss or weight gain, vitamin deficiencies, and other health concerns. Our executive chefs at MorningStar offer the healthiest options senior living Portland, OR, has seen. A healthy diet rich in vegetables, minerals, good fats, and protein supports brain function and overall well-being.

The Benefits of a Daily Walk for Seniors

August 25, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in retirement communities

Walking seems like a simple exercise. However, not enough adults or seniors take regular walks. It’s no surprise that a daily walk for seniors can improve health and overall well-being. Getting 10 to 15 minutes of fresh air, walking around MorningStar’s assisted living community with a friend or family member, or taking your dog out for a quick stroll are all great ways to get your body moving. At MorningStar, you can find a senior living community that promotes a healthy lifestyle for seniors.

Walking improves circulation and heart health in seniors. If you want to be proactive in your health as you age, taking a daily walk is a massive step in the right direction. Literally! Daily walking has shown a positive impact on heart health and reduces the risk of more serious conditions, like heart disease, strokes, and even diabetes.

If your loved one has been experiencing muscle pain, arthritis, or other types of chronic pain, a daily walk is beneficial in reducing this discomfort, too. It may seem counterintuitive to move more when you experience body pain, but walking strengthens the muscles in your legs and back. Stronger muscles can alleviate stress on joints and will work to relieve pain associated with arthritis.

Seniors can often struggle with sleep issues. A huge benefit of walking is that it forces your body to use more energy, therefore requiring more rest. This can greatly improve the lifestyle of a senior struggling with insomnia or poor sleep habits. If you are considering a move to senior living, Parker’s health-focused MorningStar of Parker has everything to get your body and mind on the right track. We hope to see you enjoying our strolling paths and Cherry Creek Trail soon!

You can enjoy the things you love more when you live at a MorningStar Senior Living retirement home and assisted living community near you. Whether it’s fulfilling a calling, finding a new opportunity through volunteerism, or spending time with friends and loved ones and relaxing, contact us to schedule a tour of our retirement community near you.

Receive the Care You Need at MorningStar at West San Jose

August 18, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

Does your elderly mom or dad dismiss the idea of assisted living fearing it would end their independence and life as they know it? Do they think assisted living homes are more like nursing homes of the past? We want to reassure you and your senior loved one that assisted living communities such as the new MorningStar at West San Jose are not nursing homes. In fact, we do not offer skilled nursing services but rather provide assistance with the ADLs (activities of daily living), along with engaging activities and other services intended to improve and enhance quality of life.

It is important to a senior’s overall health that they receive proper care as the website Aging.com reports, “Functional status and the ability to care for oneself have a significant impact on a senior's quality of life. Unmet needs for help with activities of daily living can lead to malnutrition, poor personal hygiene, isolation, illnesses like urinary tract infections (UTIs), and falls.” In fact, studies show seniors getting assistance with the ADLs allows them to feel like they are in control of their life again and helps them regain a sense of self-worth and purpose.

At MorningStar at West San Jose, we know seniors have a lot to offer and the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless. We act upon this truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof. Our beautiful community offers 69 graciously appointed suites for assisted living in a variety of floorplans. In addition, the Reflections Neighborhood provides 34 memory care suites devoted to the individualized care of residents with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.

We also offer respite care for those recovering from surgery or an illness, as well as short-term stays from one week up to a full month to see if we are a good fit. Please contact us or visit our website for more information about trusted senior living at MorningStar’s new community in San Jose.

Since 2003, MorningStar has considered it a privilege and responsibility to “cast a new light” on senior living, inspired and empowered by our unique mission: to honor, to value, to invest. Identity theft is the illegal use of a person’s Social Security number, credit card or other personal information to commit a crime. According to a report from Javelin Strategy & Research, identity fraud cost 40 million Americans a combined $43 billion in 2022. While this figure was $9 billion less than 2021, financial service providers and consumers should be as vigilant as ever about protecting personal identifying information.

Although financial institutions are doing what they can to protect our personal information from those who wish to fraudulently use it, we can also take steps to protect ourselves. The first tip is to never give your bank account and Social Security numbers to people over the phone. Many scammers claim to be from your bank or a government entity and tell the person they are trying to protect them, when in fact they are doing the opposite. Remember the Social Security office or your bank is not going to call you and ask for your number.

Another way to prevent identity theft is to not reply to phishing emails. These types of emails or text messages can contain official looking logos and promise free services or goods, lottery prizes or government grants. Others may tell you there is a problem with your bank or another company and they need information to settle the account. AARP says the security company, Valimail estimates 3.4 billion fake emails are sent out every day worldwide.

The US Government Office of Justice Programs says in the event of having your identity stolen:

Place a fraud alert on your credit report.

  • Close out accounts that have been tampered with or opened fraudulently.

  • Report the identity theft to the Federal Trade Commission.

  • File a report with your local police department.

They recommend keeping a log of all your correspondence and actions taken to report the incident. This should include dates, names and phone numbers of who you contacted or reported the thief to as well as sending documents via certified mail. Keep a record of any expenses incurred in case you are entitled to restitution when the responsible party is caught.

Playing Games can be Good for Your Brain

August 14, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

While there is a long-held belief memory loss and aging are inevitable, we can actually help keep our brains sharp. A number of studies show our brains continue to build new connections, and engaging in activities that challenge us, can lead to sustained brain development and offer new ways to approach challenges.

The most effective puzzles and games linked to a reduced risk of dementia are those requiring critical thinking, problem-solving and memory recall. Patrick Porter, Ph.D, a neuroscience expert and founder of BrainTap, explains “These activities stimulate the brain by challenging it to find patterns, make connections, and think creatively. They require mental flexibility and encourage the brain to adapt and reorganize neural networks, enhancing cognitive reserve.”

To get the most benefit from mental activities, the experts say it is best to vary the type of games we play. Shifting from games that rely on speed, rapid decision making or memory help strengthen and tap into multiple ways to engage the brain. Studies show it is important to keep challenging ourselves and pushing the bar toward more difficult activities. Another thing to keep in mind is the studies linking socialization to a decrease in dementia. So before you jump on the computer for some brain games, think about putting together a group of friends to play a game of trivia with you or to piece together a puzzle.

Protect Your Eyes as You Age

August 14, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

Did you know it is estimated 895 million people worldwide will have some level of vision impairment by 2050. The Lancet reports it signals a 150 percent increase over the next 30 years and includes loss of vision from cataracts and glaucoma. Experts say while many vision problems can be treated, in some cases they can also be prevented by adopting simple, healthy habits.

If you have already gotten into the habit of wearing sunscreen and a sun-blocking hat when you are outdoors for any period of time, optometrists say you need to complete your protection by making sure to wear protective sunglasses. Exposure to UV increases our risk for cataracts and your sunglasses should have a label reading “100 percent protection from UV and UVB rays” or “100 percent protection against UV 400.”  If you are outside working for long hours, consider wrap-around style sunglasses, and if you are doing work such as trimming bushes or chopping wood, be sure to wear safety sunglasses.

As the risk for eye diseases increase as we age, the National Institute on Aging recommends having your eyes checked regularly by an ophthalmologist or optometrist. For those over age 50, you should get a dilated eye exam every year or as recommended by your eye care professional. Everyone over the age of 60 should get a dilated eye exam every year or two. Regardless of age, anyone with diabetes or high blood pressure needs to get a dilated exam at least once a year.

Other ways to protect our eyes as we age is to eat a balanced diet with lots of fresh vegetables and fruit. Additionally stop smoking, maintain a healthy weight and stay physically active. If you do have high blood pressure or diabetes, you need to learn how to manage them well and follow your doctor’s guidelines.

Muscle Loss in Seniors

August 14, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

The term sarcopenia refers to age-related muscle loss and is a natural part of growing older. However, it also may occur at a faster pace after prolonged periods of inactivity from injury, illness or the pain of osteoarthritis. Sarcopenia causes muscle atrophy and brings on problems such as poor balance and greater weakness, which in turn, can result in more inactivity and increased risks for falls.

Seniors with muscle atrophy may have difficulty reaching their arms upward, opening jars, typing on a keyboard or even tying shoes. The Journal of Rehabilitation Medicine reports on a study that found “older men who did eight weeks of strength training lost about 25% of their muscle gains after they stopped training for two weeks.”

Jodi Klein, a physical therapist with Harvard's Brigham and Women's Hospital, suggests a few things you can do if you know you have a surgical procedure ahead of you that could cause muscle atrophy. She says if you are currently active, keep it up; if not, use this time to get started. Klein explains, "The better shape you are in going into surgery, the better shape you will be coming out, and the less chance you have of enduring muscle loss."

Older adults who want to regain muscle strength should talk to their health care provider about the best methods. Experts recommend an exercise routine that builds both upper and lower body strength. This could include weight training with dumbbells and resistance bands in conjunction with walking, swimming, and biking. If it would be helpful, think about turning to an expert to aid you in regaining strength.

Enhance Quality of Life for Those With Alzheimer’s Disease

August 11, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

An article in the online publication, Medical News Today, suggests activities that can provide a person with Alzheimer’s disease a sense of normality and to help enrich their life. A study from 2020 reported meaningful activities are important for those with dementia as they can improve both psychological and physical health.

One suggestion of an indoor activity is to sit with the person and look through photo albums of family together. This is an effective way to engage the person and is typically enjoyable. Another relaxing activity can be listening to the person’s favorite music; or if they are more hands-on, do an arts and crafts project. Playing an instrument has much the same calming effect.

Researchers say studies show knitting and crocheting to be calming activities for those with Alzheimer’s. Not only does it help reduce anxiety and depression, but the person gets a sense of accomplishment. Moreover, done within a group setting, it can lessen feelings of loneliness and isolation. Routine things like daily chores can also be comforting and help the person feel like they are a contributing member of the family/group.

Experts say outdoor activities (weather permitting) are important to the person’s overall health and well-being. One area of research for those having dementia includes therapeutic gardening. Data shows gardening can improve a person’s emotional and cognitive state, increase engagement and reduce anxiety.

Other healthy outdoor activities include walking in the park (getting back to nature is good for all of us) and feeding the birds. If the person uses a mobility aid such as a walker or cane, be sure to have them use it. The same goes for wearing good-fitting walking shoes.

The Alzheimer’s Association suggests keeping to a routine each day is helpful; as well as offering other promising ideas worth considering. In addition, they say to remember everyone is different, and if an activity does not seem to be to their liking, try something else. Most importantly activities should be those the person enjoys.

At MorningStar at West San Jose, our Reflections Neighborhood provides compassionate, experienced memory care to those with Alzheimer’s or other dementia-related diseases. One Often Overlooked Benefit of Assisted Living

August 11, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

While we tend to think of assisted living communities as offering a range of senior care services to help residents maintain their independence, and/or places with luxury amenities and programs, there is one thing many people forget about. At MorningStar at Laurelhurst we call it built-in companionship. In other words, the easy camaraderie that grows based on the spirit of friendships and community between one resident to another as well as between residents and our dedicated team and the surrounding community.

Research continues to add to the growing evidence regarding the value of companionship and the benefit it offers to seniors. Studies are proving time and time again socialization among older adults not only keeps the brain sharp, but it can even decrease the risk of developing dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Unfortunately in today’s society, too many older adults say they feel isolated, which puts them at risk for depression.

Experts say along with keeping the elderly more mentally sharp, socialization increases a person’s sense of belonging. Knowing someone is there you can count on during life’s ups and downs is important. In fact, older adults with a good social network appear to have higher self-esteem and feel more confident.

Friends help us realize the importance of prioritizing our personal health and make it more likely we continue to take care of ourselves. Another benefit of a strong social life is it gives our lives meaning and purpose, and that life is worthwhile.

MorningStar has added another senior living community to our growing list of retirement homes. MorningStar at Laurelhurst recently opened and offers assisted living with comprehensive senior care and hospitality services and an array of luxury amenities. Our wellness programs and activities are designed to enhance quality of life for residents and make it easy to forge new bonds and develop new friendships.

For those suffering from Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, we provide compassionate, all-inclusive services. Please visit our website to inquire about availability and to take a firsthand look at the finest senior living Portland offers.
