Finding an Assisted Living Community

July 15, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

For anyone considering a move to assisted living, choosing the right community is a big decision for families as getting it wrong may mean another move within a couple of months. To help, senior living experts say the first thing to do is to think about the level of care you or a loved one needs to improve quality of life.

After you have a good idea of what your needs are, now factor in things like location and affordability. If mom or dad needs help with the ADLs (activities of daily living) focus only on senior communities offering assisted living. If you want the home to be a convenient drive for easy visiting, concentrate on those communities. If mom or dad no longer drives, look for a community offering transportation for doctor appointments or errands; or if they plan to bring a car, does it offer parking? Does the home offer 24/7 care, medication management and access to licensed nurses?

Obviously, affordability is an important consideration, but senior living advocates warn don’t be initially shocked at the price. Rather think about all the living costs such as property taxes, maintenance, utility bills and meals included in the home’s monthly fees. For a better understanding of mom or dad’s assets, it may be worth your while to consult an expert in elder financial consulting. They can explore various options such as eligibility for Veterans’ benefits, what your parent’s long-term care insurance may cover, and the advantages of leveraging real estate assets and life insurance, tax benefits and more.

Other things to consider include the physical characteristics of the assisted living community. Does it offer a floor plan that works for you? Do you want amenities such as a fitness center, hair salon, outdoor patio, restaurant-style dining, theater, Wi-Fi, etc.?

For luxury assisted living in San Jose, we encourage you to learn more MorningStar at West San Jose. MorningStar’s assisted living lets seniors comfortably and safely age in place with a range of hospitality and care services, resort-style amenities and a complement of wellness programs and activities. Is It Time To Consider Assisted Living?

July 03, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

Sometimes a senior has a fall or another medical emergency that precipitates the need for a change in their living circumstances such as a move into an assisted living community.  Other times, the situation is not so clear-cut and is more a case of a senior slowly losing the ability to attend to their daily care needs.  We know it is upsetting for families to see their loved one decline, which is why experts offer advice to help determine if an assisted living setting would be an improvement in their lifestyle.

One way to decide if assisted living is right for your parent or another loved one is to take an inventory of what they are having trouble doing for themselves and if assistance would improve their quality of life.  For instance, are they having a hard time preparing and cooking meals or need help bathing, toileting, and dressing?  Have they stopped driving and spend a lot of time alone?  Is your normally tidy parent now letting the household tasks go and/or mail is stacking up unopened and bills not getting paid?

Other factors that indicate the need for more help include recent falls or burns from using water that is too hot or from cooking.  Warning signs also include a history of medication mismanagement or worsening chronic health problems, which could all benefit from the care received in an assisted living community.

At MorningStar at West San Jose, we offer stylish assisted living suites with a choice of spacious studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom floor plans.  We make it easy for retirement years to be carefree with a full range of amenities, care services, wellness programs and activities. In addition, our Reflections Neighborhood provides specialized memory care to those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. Strategies Assisted Living Communities Use to Enhance Resident Safety

June 28, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

Ensuring the safety of residents is a top priority in assisted living communities. Various strategies are employed to create a secure environment while promoting independence and quality of life. Let’s explore some critical measures assisted living communities, including those in Idaho Falls, use to enhance resident safety.

Comprehensive Staff Training

A well-trained staff is the cornerstone of resident safety in an assisted living community. Our team members receive extensive training in emergency response, first aid, and daily care routines. This training ensures they are prepared to handle any situation, providing peace of mind for residents and their families. Regular refresher courses help keep skills sharp and knowledge up-to-date.

24/7 Monitoring and Assistance

Having round-the-clock monitoring and assistance is crucial for resident safety. In assisted living Idaho Falls communities, we employ advanced monitoring systems and have staff available 24/7 to respond to emergencies. This constant vigilance helps ensure that help is always available, no matter the time of day or night.

Secure Living Spaces

Creating a secure living environment is essential. Our communities are designed with safety in mind, featuring secure entrances, well-lit corridors, and accessible emergency exits. Regular safety checks and maintenance ensure the physical environment remains safe and hazard-free. Handrails, non-slip flooring, and easily accessible bathrooms are standard in our senior living spaces to prevent falls and injuries.

Personalized Care Plans

Every resident has unique needs, and personalized care plans help address these effectively. We develop individualized care plans that include specific safety measures tailored to each resident’s health and mobility. These plans are regularly reviewed and updated to adapt to changes in a resident’s condition, ensuring continuous and appropriate care.

Emergency Preparedness Programs

Emergency preparedness is a critical aspect of resident safety. Our communities conduct regular emergency drills, including fire and evacuation drills, to ensure that residents and staff are prepared for any situation. We have detailed emergency response plans, including coordination with local emergency services to provide swift and effective responses.

Technology Integration

Incorporating technology into our safety strategies enhances overall effectiveness. We utilize emergency call systems, motion sensors, and health monitoring devices to monitor residents’ well-being. These technologies allow us to provide immediate assistance and monitor health conditions proactively. In senior living communities, this integration of technology ensures that residents receive timely care and attention.

Health and Wellness Programs

Promoting overall health and wellness is a crucial component of enhancing safety. Our health and wellness programs include regular health check-ups, fitness classes, and nutritional guidance. Encouraging a healthy lifestyle, we help residents maintain their physical and mental well-being, reducing the risk of health-related incidents.

Social Engagement and Mental Health Support

Social engagement and mental health are integral to safety. We offer a variety of social activities and mental health support services to ensure that residents remain engaged and emotionally healthy. Isolation can lead to mental health issues, which can, in turn, affect physical health and safety. By fostering a supportive and vibrant community, we help mitigate these risks.

Continuous Improvement

Safety is an ongoing priority, and we are committed to continuous improvement. We regularly review our safety protocols and seek feedback from residents and their families to identify areas for enhancement. This commitment to improvement ensures we always strive to provide the safest environment possible.

In our community, the safety and well-being of residents are paramount. By employing comprehensive strategies that include staff training, advanced monitoring, personalized care, and the integration of technology, we create a secure and supportive environment for our residents. Together, we can ensure that our elderly loved ones live safely and comfortably, enjoying their golden years to the fullest.

Moving a Parent to Assisted Living is Often a Difficult Decision

May 27, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

Many adult children feel as if they let their parents down by moving them into an assisted living community. Mom or dad may have even asked years ago that you never put them into a “home,” and at the time, you made the promise; and/or you know families whose adult children have opened their home to their parents. You keep thinking your parents spent years caring for you, and now when they need help, you turn to strangers to provide the care they need.

Experts explain feelings of guilt are normal and moving a loved one to an assisted living community is probably one of the hardest decisions you will have to make as an adult. However, they quickly add it is important to remember they were not getting the assistance they needed at home. For their safety and wellbeing, they need to move to a place where they will receive the proper care.

Rather than waste time thinking you have let them down, think of it as giving them a better quality of life where they can safely age in place. Experts say stop comparing yourself to others who may have made different decisions; and most of all to remember “people who don’t help and don’t understand the situation aren’t qualified to make judgments or accusations.” Also, remember your loved one is getting older and chances are their health is not going to improve in the long run regardless of where they are living. By getting the care they need, assisted living can offer a senior the feeling of independence.

For assisted living in San Jose, we encourage families to consider MorningStar.  We provide all the amenities, wellness programs, and care services residents need for their comfort and wellbeing.  Our beautiful community offers stylish suites in a range of floor plans to accommodate residents’ preferences and needs.   In addition, suites in our Reflections Neighborhood are devoted to the care of those with Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia. Assisted Living Can Be a Healthier Lifestyle Than Living Alone

May 17, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

As people grow older, their needs change and many require help with daily personal care activities.  This can present a dilemma in families as some elderly seniors firmly state that they do not want to move into an assisted living community.  However, when the pressure to assume caretaking responsibilities continues to grow for family members and even safety is a concern, they may have to consider alternatives.

It is important to know that research shows assisted living can be a healthier lifestyle for seniors than living alone.  They have access to 24/7 care as well as the benefits that come from socializing with others.  In addition, keep in mind that your parent’s home may need costly modifications to make it safe for them to continue to live there while assisted living communities are designed to address those needs.  Moreover, along with the assistance they need with daily personal care, communities such as MorningStar at West San Jose provide a range of wellness programs and activities that support residents’ mental, physical, spiritual, and social wellbeing.

In addition, wholesome, nutritional daily meals as well as housekeeping and laundry services mean your parents will have their basic needs met seamlessly.  One often overlooked benefit of assisted living is that with proper assistance, rather than your parent’s fear of losing their independence becoming true, they will actually get it back.  Also, by getting the needed assistance from the staff, it allows families to just enjoy spending time together without the added responsibility of being caregivers.

At MorningStar at West San Jose, we are committed to creating an atmosphere that promotes a healthy engaged lifestyle.  Residents have a chance to begin new adventures, meet a broader community of like-minded individuals and enjoy precious retirement years. Our contemporary suites are available in a range of floor plans and only require furnishings and personal items to make it feel like home.  For safety, all suites are equipped with emergency call systems and handicap-accessible bathrooms.  Contact us or visit our website for more information about luxury senior living in San Jose.

Making Assisted Living Visits More Meaningful

April 03, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

Especially on birthdays and holidays, many of us wish to brighten the day for a loved one in an assisted living community by letting them know they are very special to us.  To help make our visit more meaningful, experts provide some tips to keep in mind when we visit.

You may want to plan in advance an activity your loved one would enjoy doing with you during your visit.  Examples include bringing along a puzzle to work on, a Scrabble board or a trivia game.  You could get prints of current photos of the family made to add to an album or start a new one.  If they are a music lover, bring some new music to enjoy together.  If they enjoy listening to stories, get an audiobook to listen to or buy a favorite family movie to watch together.  If they like sending greeting cards to family and friends, buy a box of cards and help get them ready to mail.   If they get pleasure from being pampered, bring along the supplies to give them a manicure.

If the weather is cooperative, take advantage of the community’s outdoor area to soak up the sun or take your loved one to a local park and plan to share a simple meal of sandwiches and a drink.  Bringing your kids along automatically provides a more cheerful energy and will give the resident pleasant memories long after the little ones have gone home.   However, do keep in mind that too many visitors at a time can be hectic and it may be better to spread out the visits.

If you do want to bring gifts, remember the person most likely does not have a lot of extra room for anything too big.  Gifts of food are generally welcomed and can be shared with others in the community.  Other tips include not visiting when you are ill, and be sure to wash your hands when you first come in to avoid spreading germs.

At MorningStar Assisted Living & Memory Care at West San Jose, we provide lots of activities and programs for our residents, but we know they always look forward to seeing their family.  Our community has beautiful and inviting common areas to enjoy with visiting family and friends.  For assisted living in San Jose, we encourage you to consider MorningStar, the perfect community to age in place comfortably and safely.

MorningStar’s foundation is based on the mission to honor God, value seniors and invest in our staff to create a unique senior living experience.  Set in a warm, loving atmosphere with beautiful surroundings and resort-style amenities, we provide exceptional assisted living and memory care.  Please contact us to discover why MorningStar at West San Jose is a great place to call home.

How is Care Customized to Individual Needs in Assisted Living?

February 26, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

If you have a senior parent or elderly loved one in need of assisted care, you want to be sure that their future senior living community can properly support and care for them depending on their unique needs and concerns. Personalized assisted living care plans are specialized to a senior’s physical, emotional, mental, and social needs. For many senior living communities, personalized care plans are developed with the input of family, care providers, and medical professionals.

When you are transitioning a loved one to assisted living, here is what to expect when building your personalized care plan at MorningStar Senior Living Portland:

Initial Assessment

The initial assessment involves gathering information about the resident’s health, medical history, physical and cognitive abilities, preferences, and any specific care needs. Before you move your loved one to an assisted living community, be sure to have a list of your loved one’s daily routine or activities. Within this list, be sure to communicate with the personalized care team if your loved one’s current physical, mental, or emotional state hinders or impacts the completion of any activities.

Developing the Care Plan

A personalized care plan is drafted after all the personal information has been considered. This care plan is always flexible and subject to change. The personalized care plan outlines the specific services and assistance required for your loved one to be successful at MorningStar while considering factors such as activities of daily living, mobility, medication management, and any medical conditions that need to be regularly treated.

Enacting the Personalized Plan

Once everything has been drafted, staff and medical care providers will be notified of the needs required by the new resident. Special dietary needs will also be communicated to catering staff and chefs. If any changes need to be made to the plan following its initial draft, care managers are happy to edit and reconsider any concerns to make residents happier and healthier in their new homes.

3 Important Questions to Ask Before Choosing an Assisted Living Community

February 23, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

When you are making the decision to transition your senior parent or loved one to an assisted living community, you may be overwhelmed by all the options available to you. Many of these communities may seem promising, but asking a few key questions below will certainly help you make a more informed decision about your loved one’s future retirement home.

How is Assisted Living Care Customized to Individual Needs?

If you are seeking assisted living care, you are likely concerned with how a future senior living community will meet the unique needs of your loved one. For the best assisted living care, a personalized care plan should be developed based on an individual assessment, family input, and medical advice. Be sure to ask about the process different communities use to build their care plans. Flexible care plans ensure that the level of care can change depending on the senior’s needs over time.

How Qualified are the Staff and Management?

Asking about the staff-to-resident ratio is an important question to ask when considering assisted living options. Knowing this will help you to better infer if your loved one’s needs will be properly met in a timely manner. Not only this, but overworked staff are more likely to experience apathy, which can impact your loved one’s care.

What is the Visitor Policy?

To ensure that your loved one is receiving the proper care, it is important to ask about a community visitation policy before moving your loved one. A welcoming senior living environment that welcomes family and friends regularly is important for the resident’s social and emotional well-being.

Assisted Living at MorningStar’s Community in San Jose

February 12, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

If you are a senior or have a parent or other loved one that needs more daily help to ensure their safety and wellbeing, it may be time to consider an assisted living community.  When you begin your search, please add MorningStar at West San Jose to the top of your list.  Our beautiful community borders Saratoga, Los Gatos and Cupertino and is convenient for medical facilities, shopping and restaurants as well as recreational areas.

Too often seniors worry that moving into assisted living will result in a loss of independence and freedom.  They are afraid that assisted living communities are cold, institutional places that feel more like a hospital or nursing home. Moreover, many mistakenly believe it will mean a loss of privacy and the ability to make their own decisions. At MorningStar at West San Jose, this could not be further from the truth.

What sets MorningStar apart from other senior living in the area?  Along with spacious private suites in a range of configurations and floor plans, a whole host of amenities, and five-star dining, our community also provides care services that help our assisted living residents maintain their sense of independence and dignity.

Could Your Parents Benefit From Assisted Living?

January 29, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

If you have been relying on a piecemeal approach to care for your elderly parent’s various needs, you may want to consider moving them into an assisted living community.    If cost is the reason you have not considered community living, you may not be aware that assisted living can be more affordable than in-home care services.  Experts say if you are paying for more than 40 hours of weekly care, all told, assisted living is probably less expensive.

Moreover, the peace of mind you get knowing trained care managers are always available to help navigate changes in your loved one’s health is priceless.  At MorningStar at West San Jose, we provide residents a beautiful home along with a lifestyle of comfort and wellbeing.  In addition, our team is committed to caring for seniors and ensuring they are treated with the respect and dignity they deserve.

As an assisted living resident, your parents will have an individualized care plan created just for them after an extensive interview process with our Wellness Director.  It includes an assessment of their current health as well as a full review of their medical history. Additionally, we routinely re-evaluate the needs of our residents and update care plans as needed.  Monthly costs are based on the level of care (we have five levels), along with various auxiliary services, both medical and non-medical, that are priced a la carte.

Our contemporary suites are ready to move into and all new residents need to do is bring their furnishings and personal items. We provide the rest including three daily tasty and nutritional meals, a 24/7 care staff, full-time licensed nurse, scheduled transportation and much more.  And in case you wondered, MorningStar is pet friendly.  Please contact us or visit our website for more information about outstanding senior living at MorningStar.

Are You Looking for Assisted Living in San Jose?

January 12, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

Several studies have shown that most seniors who move into senior living communities say they prefer it to living alone.  A Place for Mom reports that “while many seniors want to age at home as long as they can, research shows that senior living communities may be the healthier option; especially after a spouse passes away.”  Also, seniors are often unaware of the wide range of services and amenities available at an independent or assisted living community.

When a senior lives alone, they can become isolated, especially if they have stopped driving.  In addition, trying to maintain a house can be difficult for aging adults.  Housekeeping chores, preparing meals, and going up and down stairs can be challenging for the elderly.  Another problem faced by seniors who live alone is the fear of falling.  Having no one around to help in the case of an emergency can be scary as well as life-threatening.

If you are looking for assisted living in San Jose, we encourage you to consider MorningStar at West San Jose.  Our beautiful community has 69 suites with spacious studio, one-bedroom or two-bedroom floor plans. Apartments feature a kitchenette, handicap-accessible bathrooms and emergency call systems. Weekly housekeeping and linen service is provided.

Our luxury community offers all the services, resort-style amenities, programs and activities to ensure residents a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and security.   Starting with a five-star dining service that includes meals prepared largely from scratch using the freshest ingredients, restaurant-style dining and a private dining room, we have a bistro, theatre, salon and underground parking.  Other amenities include a life enrichment room, fitness center, courtyard, and a sky terrace as well as scheduled transportation.

MorningStar at West San Jose offers the kind of senior living area families count on.  Along with assisted living, we provide memory care in our Reflections Neighborhood for those with Alzheimer’s or other dementia-related diseases. In addition, we offer respite care, (short recuperative stays) and trial stays from one week up to a full month to see if we are a good fit.  Please contact us or visit our website for more information.

Understanding the Difference Between Assisted Living and Skilled Nursing

December 25, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

If you are currently seeking assisted living care for a spouse or loved one, you may be considering an assisted living community or a skilled nursing facility. Both of these senior living options offer unique services and gaining a deeper understanding of these two choices will help you make an informed decision for your loved one.

Assisted Living

Most assisted Living Facilities are designed to assist residents 62 years and older with the activities of daily living in a residential setting. Life enrichment teams and hospitality services are a big amenity offered in assisted living communities. This hospitality service plans and coordinates every activity and social gathering on our senior living campus. These teams keep seniors active in assisted living.

Residents and their families gain peace of mind knowing trained care managers are there to help navigate changes in health. MorningStar Senior Living Portland also offers a secure neighborhood for the memory-impaired, making it easy for seniors to transition to memory care if necessary.

Skilled Nursing

Once known as “nursing homes,” Skilled Nursing Facilities were popular at a time when there were few other options for senior care. Today, Skilled Nursing Facilities are generally more focused on short-term rehab over long-term care. This means they dedicate more of their space and resources to post-hospitalization rehabilitation. Their staff are typically RNs and CNAs, serving residents in fragile and declining health. For seniors who require complicated levels of care and deal with intense health concerns, Skilled Nursing Facilities may provide more attuned care to these individuals.

The Move to an Assisted Living Community

December 22, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

No matter what age we are, moving can be a big deal. Whether as a high schooler changing schools, or a retiree embarking on a new chapter to an assisted living community, moving is a big deal.

For older adults, a move to assisted living may include giving up a beloved family home. In this case, they probably have a whole house full of things and will need to downsize. That alone can be tough, as the person will most likely need to give up possessions they have had for years. For more on downsizing, the Internet offers a variety of suggestions to help you get started.

MorningStar at West San Jose’s team understands every resident’s move is unique and recognizes it for what it is – a major lifestyle transition. This is why we approach each move-in with the utmost sensitivity, and sincerely strive to nurture a good relationship right from the start. We seek to reinforce the positive aspects of community life, and do all we can to help the person embrace their new adventure.

Once your family decides assisted living at MorningStar is a good fit, we request a deposit to secure your chosen suite. From there our “House to Home” process begins in earnest. This includes getting together vital information, agreements and permissions inherent to the move such as a medical assessment and a physician’s plan of care, along with other documentation.

Practical advice from us includes recommending moving companies experienced in senior transitions. Furniture carts and dollies are available to borrow, if needed. We also offer packing tips and suggestions on the best items to bring. Most importantly we keep the lines of communication open as we know it is vital to a satisfactory experience.

MorningStar at West San Jose’s assisted living is designed to support and engage residents’ mind, body and spirit. Our wide array of amenities, hospitality and senior care services, wellness programs and activities help nurture residents’ independence for the best quality of life. In addition, our beautiful community offers specialized memory care in our Reflections Neighborhood for those suffering from Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  Please contact us or visit our website for more information about outstanding senior living in San Jose, CA.

Promoting Physical and Mental Health in Assisted Living

November 29, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide holistic senior living care that supports physical and mental health. Aging can cause changes in mental and physical health that if not cared for properly, can advance quickly. Mental health in seniors can be impacted by many factors. Losing a loved one, dealing with a difficult health diagnosis, financial worries, or lack of mobility are all feelings that can make seniors feel excluded from the world around them. If you have noticed personality changes in an aging loved one, it may be time to consider providing them support through an assisted living community.

MorningStar Senior Living promotes physical and mental health in assisted living for seniors. By creating a community that is socially active, friendly, and spiritually inclined, seniors are emotionally cared for by their neighbors, staff members, and 24/7 caregivers. Find out more about how promoting physical and mental health in assisted living benefits seniors.

Individualized Care

Every senior has different mental and physical health concerns. MorningStar offers personalized senior living care near you. Individualized care is a holistic approach to senior care. Personalized care plans recognize that not every senior will require the same level of care. We work with families to know our residents and their needs. This holistic approach to senior care fosters a sense of autonomy, purpose, and emotional well-being within our community. In doing so, we can evaluate when a senior’s needs or interests change abruptly and adjust our care levels.

Individualized care provides seniors with the support to improve their mental and physical health. Individualized assisted living communities provide a commitment to safety, experienced staff members, and state-of-the-art safety features, so you can be confident that your loved one will receive the best care possible.

MorningStar at West San Jose Provides Residents the Care They Need

October 25, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

Families often wonder how assisted living communities such as MorningStar at West San Jose determine the level of care for residents. We want to reassure you there is no need to worry mom or dad’s needs will not be addressed as our job includes creating and routinely re-evaluating residents’ individualized care plan designed for their wellbeing and safety.

Once you and your family decide MorningStar is the best fit, we invite you to meet with our Wellness Director to come up with a specialized care plan based on five levels of care – basic through level 4. Additionally, monthly fees are determined by the square footage and location of your suite within the building along with the view. We have a choice of studio, one-bedroom or two-bedroom floorplans.

Our care services take into account the cost and time of providing each service such as assistance with dressing and bathing. The result is a highly Individualized Service Plan that offers the right amount of assistance when you need it. Medication management is included in Level 1. Other various auxiliary services, both medical and non-medical, are priced a la carte.

We believe wellness of mind, body and spirit is a joint effort between our remarkable residents and team members. Between clinical services and our life enrichment programs and activities, we work hard to be a breath of fresh air; and look for creative solutions that offer a higher quality of care at a lower cost to families. Working within the scope of our licensing with the Department of Health, we try to find creative solutions to extend the stay of our residents even as health conditions change.

Along with assisted living, our Reflections Neighborhood provides memory care to those with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. All team members complete thorough training including our signature program, Lavender Sky, to help residents and their families navigate this challenging journey. Please contact us or visit our website for more information about exceptional senior living in San Jose.

MorningStar is guided by a culture rooted in our mission of honoring God, valuing seniors, and investing in our team, which allows us to deliver services with warmth, sincerity and depth of purpose. We have built a reputation for creating homes filled with an atmosphere of love and community. Please contact us to learn more about

Choosing an Assisted Living Community

October 18, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

According to the US Census Bureau’s statistics, there were an estimated 56 million adults ages 65 years and older, accounting for approximately 16.8% of the nation's population as of 2021. An aging population means the number of seniors who require help with the ADLs (activities of daily living) will continue to grow as will the necessity for assisted living communities to address those needs.

The National Center for Assisted Living, a non-profit organization representing assisted living facilities across the country, explains, "Assisted living is part of a continuum of long-term care services that provides a combination of housing, personal care services, and health care designed to respond to individuals who need assistance with normal daily activities in a way that promotes maximum independence.”

So how do you decide the best fit for yourself or a loved one when it comes to an assisted living community? Experts say begin by researching who regulates assisted living in your state and the type of regulations in place. Then begin looking at individual homes. The most important thing is to ensure the home provides the level of care you or your loved one needs now and will need over the next several years as you don’t want to have to make another move in a couple of years.

Affordability is another consideration. Consulting with an elder care attorney can be helpful in exploring creative ways to pay for assisted living. Also, you will want a location convenient for family and friends, and for getting to doctor’s appointments, shopping and more.

Finally, consider the amenities and activities. Does the community have inviting common areas for visitors? What type of onsite amenities would you desire? A salon, theater or chapel? Are the activities or hobbies you enjoy such as crafting or bridge available?

At MorningStar at West San Jose, we offer assisted living along with memory care. As an assisted living resident, you will have a personalized plan created for you, and updated as needed. Around-the-clock care managers, access to licensed nurses and medication management are just a few of the many services we provide to ensure your safety and to meet your needs.

MorningStar residents enjoy beautifully prepared meals, served restaurant-style and eaten in a relaxed, community setting. We also know it is important for seniors to continue to learn and contribute, which is why we offer a wide range of meaningful wellness programs, activities and entertainment. Adult Children Can Become Overprotective of Parents

October 16, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

We all understand the value of independence but as we grow older, many seniors are faced with physical and mental limitations that make them feel it may be threatened. Independence is one of the few things seniors want to feel they still have control over; and is important as it is closely tied to self-worth and a sense of achievement.

Experts say well-intentional families can sometimes create bigger problems by becoming overprotective toward mom or dad. This can result in the senior becoming more fearful than the situation warrants, and erode their self-esteem and confidence. Another problem threatening a senior’s independence is when adult children talk to the parent as if they are a child. Even the most conscientious caregivers can sometimes baby the person way too much or pressure them to do what they think is best.

Just as we do not want people telling us what to do or intruding into things we are not ready to share, you need to respect your parents’ privacy. When mom or dad’s wishes are respected, they will feel like they have more control of their lives. If a time comes when your parents’ need more help than they can get at home, it may be time to look into an assisted living community. Just be sure it is one where they will be respected and their independence will be nurtured.

If you are exploring assisted living communities, MorningStar at West San Jose is one you should put on the top of your list. Scheduled to open in late 2023, our beautiful home is designed to meet all the needs of our residents with a range of luxury amenities, senior care, hospitality services, wellness programs, and activities. Please contact us for more information about senior living at MorningStar.

MorningStar takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003.
