Promoting Physical and Mental Health in Assisted Living

November 29, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide holistic senior living care that supports physical and mental health. Aging can cause changes in mental and physical health that if not cared for properly, can advance quickly. Mental health in seniors can be impacted by many factors. Losing a loved one, dealing with a difficult health diagnosis, financial worries, or lack of mobility are all feelings that can make seniors feel excluded from the world around them. If you have noticed personality changes in an aging loved one, it may be time to consider providing them support through an assisted living community.

MorningStar Senior Living promotes physical and mental health in assisted living for seniors. By creating a community that is socially active, friendly, and spiritually inclined, seniors are emotionally cared for by their neighbors, staff members, and 24/7 caregivers. Find out more about how promoting physical and mental health in assisted living benefits seniors.

Individualized Care

Every senior has different mental and physical health concerns. MorningStar offers personalized senior living care near you. Individualized care is a holistic approach to senior care. Personalized care plans recognize that not every senior will require the same level of care. We work with families to know our residents and their needs. This holistic approach to senior care fosters a sense of autonomy, purpose, and emotional well-being within our community. In doing so, we can evaluate when a senior’s needs or interests change abruptly and adjust our care levels.

Individualized care provides seniors with the support to improve their mental and physical health. Individualized assisted living communities provide a commitment to safety, experienced staff members, and state-of-the-art safety features, so you can be confident that your loved one will receive the best care possible.

Stroke Is a Common Medical Event but Often Misunderstood

November 27, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

Stroke is a common medical event. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reports each year over 795,000 people in the United States suffer from a stroke, and of that number, around 610,000 are first strokes. Statistics show stroke to be the second leading cause of death worldwide in 2019; and experts say while common, stroke is often misunderstood.

One of the first misconceptions is that stroke is caused by a problem of the heart. Doctors explain stroke occurs when there is a blockage or rupture of arteries or veins in the brain, not in the heart.

The second most important thing to know about stroke is in many cases it is preventable. The most common risk factors include hypertension, smoking, high cholesterol, obesity, diabetes, trauma to the head or neck, and cardiac arrhythmias. Lifestyle changes like eating a healthier diet, avoiding smoking and exercising can help lessen your risk for a stroke. Managing stress and watching your consummation of alcohol can additionally reduce the risk.

Another thing many people do not know about stroke is it is treatable and the faster you get treatment the better the outcome. This is why it is important to pay attention to symptoms such as trouble speaking, double vision, paralysis or numbness. If you do experience symptoms, call an ambulance. Remember stroke does not only occur in the elderly. While your risk for stroke does increase with age, a study reports 34% of stroke hospitalizations in 2009 were under the age of 65.

Not all strokes have symptoms and some are only found through MRIs and other diagnostic tests. A transient ischemic attack (TIA), sometimes called a “mini-stroke,” can be a warning and requires an emergency work-up and management to prevent a possible larger stroke.

Tips for Connecting with Grandchildren In Retirement Homes

November 27, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Retirement Home

Many seniors worry about their connection with their family when they move to senior living. Even the best senior living communities may feel challenging for seniors who are trying to stay connected with their grandchildren. Regardless of age, distance, or lifestyle changes, MorningStar Retirement Homes offers seniors tips for connecting with grandchildren. Exploring the amenities and support systems available in senior living Portland provides seniors with a fulfilling and healthy retirement experience for themselves and their families.

Sharing Experiences

The best connections happen from sharing experiences. Exploring the many amenities your senior living community has to offer increases topics for you to discuss with your family and grandchildren. If your grandchild is a movie fanatic, watching a movie they love will keep you connected by giving you a shared experience.

When grandchildren visit your retirement home, be mindful of the things they enjoy and what you all share in common. Sharing a meal of favorite foods, doing a shared activity, or completing a craft together are great ways to connect.

Utilize Technology

Our children and grandchildren have grown up in a technologically advanced world. Many of the ways they connect with their friends are through cell phones, social media, and other forms of technology.

While you may not be the most savvy with technology, start small with weekly or monthly video chats on a smartphone or laptop. Texting may also be an easy way to communicate regularly.

The Many Benefits of Assisted Living Communities

November 27, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

Many times, a move to assisted living is not only good for the senior but for the family as well. Mom or dad living alone, perhaps already experiencing a fall or another type of health emergency, is stressful for everybody involved.

Senior living experts point out the benefits of receiving attentive senior care along with services like nutritional meals, access to meaningful programs and transportation to and from appointments. At communities like MorningStar at West San Jose, we sit down with in-coming residents to create a Personalized Service Plan designed to help with the ADLs (activities of daily living), which include bathing, grooming, transferring (such as from bed to a wheelchair), feeding and toileting.

Dee Pekruhn, director of life plan communities’ services and policy for LeadingAge, the association of nonprofit providers of aging services, says, “Whether they stand alone or are part of a larger continuing care campus, assisted living communities offer a wide variety of community and social activities.”

These typically include arts and crafts, physical exercise classes such as chair yoga, live concerts and other entertainment, and educational and technology classes. At MorningStar, we tell our residents if we don’t already have a class addressing one of your interests, to start one.

Special outings and trips are another component of many assisted living communities including MorningStar at West San Jose. Bus trips to local points of interest, shopping or cultural events are just some of the activities enjoyed by residents.

Another important service is medication management as statistics show the average older adult takes four or more prescription drugs each day, and as high as 39 percent of seniors take five or more. Medical management ensures seniors take the proper medication they need when they need it.

MorningStar is proud to offer exceptional assisted living in San Jose, CA with our distinct mission statement “to honor, to value, to invest.” Our community offers 69 private assisted living suites and 34 suites in our Reflections Neighborhood devoted to caring for those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. Assisted Living vs. Living Alone: Exploring the Advantages for Seniors

November 26, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

Like anyone, seniors enjoy their independence and autonomy. Even seniors who struggle with daily tasks and routines enjoy feeling in control of their lives. However, as our parents and loved ones age, we increasingly worry about their health and safety. What is the best way to give our seniors independence while also being sure they are being taken care of? Keep reading to explore the advantages of assisted living for seniors.

Maintain Independence

There is an outdated image of assisted living in our minds as dark, isolating, and controlling. However, modern assisted living communities near you have completely changed the way we think about senior living communities. At MorningStar, senior living options in Parker, CO are created with independence in mind. Our communities encourage seniors to be their authentic selves and explore the things they enjoy. Assisted living provides extra support and maintenance, but seniors are still able to do the things they love and socialize with their family and friends in a safe environment free of fall risks.

Staying Social

Assisted living homes give seniors the socialization they crave. When living alone, the only people they may see regularly are the ones that stop by. As we age, driving, walking, and participating in a fast-paced society becomes increasingly more difficult. In senior living communities, seniors freely communicate with their neighbors through organized activities and events. By exploring some of MorningStar’s many amenities, seniors meet like-minded individuals who share their same hobbies and passions. Living alone limits our social engagement and can actually be more isolating than our perceived ideas about assisted living communities.

Eating Healthier Rather than Dieting is Best for Overall Health

November 20, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

While losing weight is tough, for many of us, the real battle is keeping the weight off. Caroline Thomason, RD, CDCES, a dietitian and diabetes educator based in Washington, D.C., explains there is a growing body of evidence showing that when we focus on higher-quality nutrition, not only does our weight improve but also our health. Changing to a diet with more vegetables and fruits means you will take in fewer calories than you previously did, allowing weight loss to naturally take place. An improved diet results in better health.

One of the biggest problems with “dieting” is that a person too often focuses on calorie content without regard to nutritional value.” Experts say this makes sticking to a calorie restrictive diet harder. Once we include nutritional foods in our day-to-day diet, it makes us feel fuller and even lets us eat more while taking in fewer calories.

Another thing about a life-long nutritional diet filled with fruits and vegetables, plant-based proteins and whole-foods is it promotes better health and quality of life as you age. Research shows people who eat better have a lower risk of many chronic diseases. Furthermore, dietitians say it is never too late to adopt healthier eating patterns. By simply changing diet, many people are able to lower high-blood pressure and cholesterol as well as reverse diabetes.

Doctors agree adopting good eating habits that are permanent is what counts rather than short-term diets. Along with diet; exercise, sleep and stress management are all important for better health.

Things You Can Do to Reduce the Risk of a Fall

November 17, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that each year, one out of every five Americans aged 65 years and older has a fall that results in an injury such as broken bones or a head injury. However, medical professionals say while it is important for seniors to take precautions to prevent falls as injuries can be serious, they also remind us that regardless of how old we are, it is beneficial for our overall health to keep moving. Experts explain that failing to engage in “mild exercise on a regular basis results in reduced muscle strength, decreased bone mass, loss of balance and coordination, and reduced flexibility.”

They go on to say that despite commonly held beliefs, falls are not a normal part of aging and there are things you can do to help keep you on your feet and mitigate the risk of a fall. Their first piece of advice is to talk to your doctor about your risk and prevention. Tell them if you have fallen and discuss your medications to see if side effects include dizziness or sleepiness that could contribute to falls.

While falls are common in seniors 65 years of age and older, individuals with dementia are at an even greater risk. Researchers say there are several reasons for this including gait and balance issues as well as problems concentrating and staying focused on the task at hand. Other issues that may increase the risk of falls include poor eyesight and chronic diseases such as Parkinson’s, and arthritis or numbness in the feet. If you often feel dizzy or lightheaded upon standing or suddenly sitting up, ask your doctor if you might have postural hypotension, and find out how you can alleviate the symptoms.

Further tips to reduce your risk include having your eyes checked annually and updating your glasses when needed. In addition, talk to your doctor about the best footwear for inside the house as well as outside. Check your home for trip hazards (the CDC has a list of tips) and install grab bars in the bathroom. Finally, ask your doctor about exercises to strengthen your leg muscles as well as balance-training exercises to improve balance.

At MorningStar at West San Jose, our new community is designed to accommodate our residents’ every need and to see to their comfort as well as their safety. Each of our suites is equipped with a 24-hour emergency call system, handicap-accessible bathroom and we offer SafelyYou technology which uses artificial intelligence (AI) to detect and prevent falls for memory care residents. We also recognize the importance of exercising, and as such, provide a full calendar of activities that includes a variety of exercise programs. Both Children and Their Grandparents Benefit From a Close Relationship

November 15, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

To recognize the value of the relationship between grandchildren and grandparents, “Grandparents Day” is celebrated on the Sunday after Labor Day. While not a public holiday, President Jimmy Carter signed the proclamation in 1978 stating it should be observed each year.

For kids, having more people involved in their lives other than their parents is a good thing. Many grandparents’ unconditional love brings with it acceptance, patience and unwavering support as they readily recognize the child’s accomplishments and provides a safe, trusted harbor. Several studies validate the love and emotional closeness grandparents provide can make a positive impact on a child’s healthy development. Moreover, as grandparents may be retired, they have more leisure time to spend with the grandkids.

Research also shows that a close, involved relationship is good for grandparents too, and contributes to a healthier, happier and possibly even longer life. Grandparents’ relationship with grandkids can include the role of caregiver, teacher, playmate and cheering squad depending on where they live; and does not come with the responsibilities of being the parent. Grandparents can uniquely provide the child with a sense of their family history, heritage, and identity. They know great stories about the child’s parents and can help pass on family traditions and life stories.

If your child does not have any grandparents, consider adopting an elderly person who does not have grandchildren. If you don’t know any senior citizens personally, call an assisted living community in your area and ask about activities where your child would be welcome. If you missed this year’s Grandparents Day, put it on the calendar and celebrate it with some of your favorite seniors next year.

The Difference Between Hospice and Palliative Care

November 10, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

To help those dealing with end-of-life issues, the National Institute on Aging (NIA) explains some of the myths associated with palliative and hospice care including sorting out the difference between the two terms. They explain while they are similar, they do differ in a couple of significant ways.

Palliative care is defined as providing specialized care for those living with a serious illness. Myths linked to palliative care include the person no longer being able to receive care for their disease. The fact is care can be provided for the illness along with curative care. Another myth is the person will no longer be able to see their primary doctor but will only be treated by specialists. NIA says in many cases, the person’s primary provider will work hand-in-hand with specialists.

The intention of palliative care is to improve quality of life as well as provide care to improve help with symptoms. It also helps the patient understand their choices for medical treatment. A palliative care team may be made up of specialized nurses and doctors along with social workers, nutritionists and chaplains. If a time comes when the person’s care team decides treatment is no longer working, palliative care could transition to hospice care if the doctor believes the person is likely to die within six months. Another option is the palliative team would continue to help with the emphasis on providing comfort care.

The NIA explains hospice care provides comfort and quality of life for a person with a serious illness who is facing end of life. The myth surrounding hospice care is the person cannot receive any medications. The truth is a person will receive medications to help manage symptoms but not to treat the disease. Many people think hospice care can only be done in a hospital or nursing facility but experts say it can also be done at home.

MorningStar of Idaho Falls expertly and compassionately provides just such care including bathing, dressing, and other personal tasks. We also provide recuperating seniors tasty, nutritional meals prepared under the direction of our Executive Chef, 24-hour care, medication management, and opportunities for socialization and meaningful activities.

During your stay, you will have peace of mind knowing help is available 24/7 and that each suite offers safety features such as emergency call systems and handicap-accessible bathrooms. Add Protein to Breakfast Helps You Stay Full and Satisfied Longer

November 03, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

How many times have you eaten breakfast, and after an hour or two, you start to feel hungry? Many breakfast options involve foods such as cereals, breads and granola bars that are high in refined grains and sugar. To solve the problem, nutritionists say you should add protein to every meal including your breakfast.

When you eat a breakfast with protein, you feel fuller and more satisfied for a longer period of time and less apt to reach for high-calorie snacks mid-day. Registered dietician, Lisa Jones, explains an adult’s daily intake of protein should be between 10% and 35% of the calories consumed. She adds, “For example, if your nutritional needs call for 2,000 calories daily, you should get 200 to 700 calories from protein, or 50 to 175 grams.”

One suggestion for an easy-to-do, protein-rich breakfast is avocado and fried egg on a bagel or enriched whole-grain slice of toast. Omelets are also fairly easy and can be assembled with a variety of fillings such as mushrooms, spinach and bacon. You can increase the protein in a bowl of oatmeal by adding a scoop of protein powder and topping it with almond milk and berries. Try other creative options such as smoked salmon on a toasted whole wheat English muffin spread with cream cheese, or a Greek yogurt parfait layered with granola, nuts, and fruit. Another incentive for eating protein in the morning is nutritionists say it can help you lose weight as you feel more satisfied for a longer period of time.

A Mobility Aid May Reduce Pain and Help You Feel More Independent

November 01, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

If you have arthritis, heart or lung issues, pain and weakness in the feet and legs, impairment due to a stroke, visual impairment, or other balance problems, a mobility aid can help you feel more independent, reduce pain, and increase confidence. With options available ranging from canes to walkers, wheelchairs, and scooters, you may be wondering which one is best for your needs.

Experts explain that your choice of aids will depend on your disability and/or medical condition. Canes are the most common choice and are good for someone with balance problems. In fact, the journal Medical Nlivingews Today, says that one in 10 adults over the age of 65 uses a cane. However, even here there are decisions to be made. While white canes are reserved for the visually impaired or blind, you may find a four-footed cane with its wider base offers more stability. If you need to shift weight from the wrist to the arm, try a forearm cane.

Walkers, also called Zimmer frames, provide stability and are used by an estimated 4.6 percent of people in the country over the age of 65. Along with the basic walker, styles include rollators that have four wheels, handlebars and a seat. Knee walkers are like a rollator but have a padded cushion to rest a knee on while the stronger leg moves it forward. Walker-cane hybrids are another option that offers better support than a standard cane.

For more severe disabilities or to move longer distances, a wide range of wheelchairs and scooters are available. If mobility problems are long-term, modifications to your home may also be necessary. Regardless of what mobility aid you decide on, doctors recommend making an appointment with your healthcare provider or physical therapist to learn how to use the new device properly.

At MorningStar at West San Jose, we have 69 private stylish suites for assisted living and another 34 memory care suites for those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. Finding a Gift for an Elderly Parent or Grandparent

October 27, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

Trying to find thoughtful gifts for an elderly parent or grandparent can be a challenge. If they live in a senior living community that provides for many of their needs or an apartment without much extra space, they probably do not need anything that takes up a lot of room or already has it.

This is where it helps to be creative, and remember gifts of your time often mean the most to an elderly person. However, there are some good gift ideas you may not have thought about and would be appreciated by your loved one. One idea for a mom or dad who loves coffee but doesn’t want to brew a whole pot is a single-serve coffee maker. Add in a few boxes of single-serve cups to use with the maker including hot chocolate or flavored coffees in a selection they would enjoy.

If they haven’t gotten a smart speaker such as an Amazon Echo yet, it can make a great gift for someone with mobility challenges as it is voice operated. They can play music, answer questions, read the news, check the weather, set alarms, control compatible smart home devices, and more. To get them started, put together a cheat sheet of verbal commands they can use.

Other ideas include a heated massage pillow to relieve neck and back pain or a sleep sound machine to help with a good night’s sleep. A gift basket filled with their favorite treats or products to pamper themselves with like fancy soaps, lotions and a couple of pairs of non-skid fuzzy socks are always appreciated. Another hit would be a recordable book from the grandkids.

For outstanding assisted living, San Jose area seniors and their families are encouraged to consider MorningStar. Our all-inclusive community offers a range of luxury amenities, while providing all the warmth and welcoming comforts of home. Every suite is well designed to maximize space and options include studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom floorplans. Residents enjoy our five-star dining, salon, fitness center, theater, bistro and scheduled transportation as well as signature wellness programs and activities. MorningStar at West San Jose Provides Residents the Care They Need

October 25, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

Families often wonder how assisted living communities such as MorningStar at West San Jose determine the level of care for residents. We want to reassure you there is no need to worry mom or dad’s needs will not be addressed as our job includes creating and routinely re-evaluating residents’ individualized care plan designed for their wellbeing and safety.

Once you and your family decide MorningStar is the best fit, we invite you to meet with our Wellness Director to come up with a specialized care plan based on five levels of care – basic through level 4. Additionally, monthly fees are determined by the square footage and location of your suite within the building along with the view. We have a choice of studio, one-bedroom or two-bedroom floorplans.

Our care services take into account the cost and time of providing each service such as assistance with dressing and bathing. The result is a highly Individualized Service Plan that offers the right amount of assistance when you need it. Medication management is included in Level 1. Other various auxiliary services, both medical and non-medical, are priced a la carte.

We believe wellness of mind, body and spirit is a joint effort between our remarkable residents and team members. Between clinical services and our life enrichment programs and activities, we work hard to be a breath of fresh air; and look for creative solutions that offer a higher quality of care at a lower cost to families. Working within the scope of our licensing with the Department of Health, we try to find creative solutions to extend the stay of our residents even as health conditions change.

Along with assisted living, our Reflections Neighborhood provides memory care to those with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. All team members complete thorough training including our signature program, Lavender Sky, to help residents and their families navigate this challenging journey. Please contact us or visit our website for more information about exceptional senior living in San Jose.

MorningStar at West San Jose Offers Holistic Memory Care

October 23, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

Along with assisted living, MorningStar at West San Jose provides compassionate and loving memory care to those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. We understand the heartbreak a diagnosis of dementia brings with it and wish to share the burden.

MorningStar’s comprehensive memory care supports residents and their families with services, wellness programs and activities essential to quality of life. Our holistic approach is encompassed under the expanse of possibilities we call “Lavender Sky,” and uses Montessori-based therapy techniques. As dementia care specialists, we feel it is our privilege – our calling – to walk alongside residents during this unexpected and challenging journey.

Once the decision is made to join our MorningStar family, we meet with the individual and their family to learn as much as we can about their background, talents and personal preferences. Aiding us in this process is a tool called “To Know Me is To Love Me.” From there, we create a specialized, individualized care plan to calm or stimulate as needed.

Our Reflections Neighborhood is designed to ensure a safe, secure environment in which residents can explore and maintain a sense of independence. Common areas are warm and inviting and meals are thoughtfully prepared and attractively served to encourage residents’ appetites. Purposeful, meaningful activities are designed to calm or stimulate as the situation requires. In addition, we offer SafelyYou technology, which can detect and prevent falls for residents with (AI) Artificial Intelligence.

Another thing that makes MorningStar at West San Jose a special place is our devoted, hard-working team who feels privileged to serve and is made up of men and women who willingly go the extra mile to meet the needs of our residents. Our job is to elevate and celebrate life by trying to connect with and nurture the individual each day, and to ensure they are treated with the utmost respect and dignity they deserve. Please visit our website to learn more about our home, our staff and the philosophy that guides our care.
