The Whole Family is Affected by Alzheimer's Disease

February 24, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Alzheimers care

When a loved one is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, it is devastating news for all.  Family members may quickly start experiencing feelings of grief as they recognize their life is about to be changed by the disease and are uneasy about what the future will hold.  Most are left with questions about what to expect next.

As Alzheimer’s begins to take away the person we know and love, the Alzheimer’s Association explains that, “you'll mourn him or her and may experience the different phases of grieving: denial, anger, guilt, sadness and acceptance.”  They remind us that feelings of grief do not come in a specific order but rather we go in and out of the various stages.

Feelings of denial include unrealistically hoping the person is not ill or expecting them to get better.  Others try to convince themselves their loved one has not changed or try to normalize and make excuses for their behaviors.  Anger may include being frustrated with the person or feeling abandoned.  You may also experience feelings of resentment with the demands of caregiving and/or resent others who are not helping with care.

Guilt includes having unrealistic thoughts about what you should have done or feeling guilty if you do not visit every day.  A spouse that is well and still able to enjoy life may feel guilty that their husband or wife is no longer able to do so.  Others may have negative feelings such as wishing the person would die or go away.

The Alzheimer’s Association says you need to face both your positive as well as negative feelings.  They also say to be prepared to go through feelings of loss more than once as the disease progresses.  Remember your grief is a part of your journey, and if you need help, talk with someone about your feelings.

Along with assisted living, MorningStar of West San Jose will offer compassionate and loving Alzheimers care to those suffering from Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  Our memory care residents will be treated with the dignity and respect they deserve and spend each day in an atmosphere that celebrates and elevates their lives. Would Assisted Living Meet Your Loved One’s Needs?

February 22, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

For many families, assisted living is a new concept and they don’t know if it would meet their loved one’s needs. While services may depend on where you live, there are similarities regardless of your zip code. The first thing families should understand is assisted living is not skilled nursing care but rather intended for seniors who require a “helping hand” with daily care activities. Seniors need to understand assisted living does not take away their independence but rather enhances it.

Assisted living communities offer an environment to safely age in place while receiving an array of senior care services, companionship and programs to improve quality of life. Residents enjoy not having to worry about home maintenance and yard work as well as preparing meals and driving as most assisted living communities provide these services.

Another big benefit to assisted living is the resident no longer feels like a burden to their family. Now when a son or daughter comes for a visit, it is just that. There isn’t a list of chores to do or the need to help with personal care or meal prep but time can be spent enjoying one another.

When you are searching for assisted living, one of the services listed should include help with the ADLs (activities of daily). ADLs include things like medication management, bathing, dressing, grooming, transference (help getting in and out of bed to wheelchair, walker etc.)  As an incoming resident, your loved one’s level of care will be based on the ADLs to create a Personalized Care Plan.

MorningStar at West San Jose provides a full range of senior care and hospitality services, luxury amenities and wellness programs to promote a healthy, engaged lifestyle. We invite you to visit our website to learn more about the area’s newest assisted living and memory care community as well as to reserve your select suite. Excitement is growing as we open to residents in June.

MorningStar at West San Jose’s foundation is based on the mission to honor God, value seniors and invest in our staff to create a unique senior living experience.  Set in a warm, loving atmosphere with beautiful surroundings and resort-style amenities, we provide exceptional assisted living and memory care. Ways You Can Maintain and Improve Memory Function

February 20, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

In an article in the US News & World Report, experts say forgetfulness is not an inevitable part of growing older and there are things we can do to help maintain and enhance our memory function and overall brain health.  Furthermore, they also benefit whole body health.

One of the first things they recommend is to never stop making “physical activity a priority as it optimizes blood flow to the entire body, including the brain.  An adequate supply of blood and oxygen to the brain helps to keep our memories sharp.”  Researchers explain that the type of exercise is also important and recommend a minimum of 30 minutes a day of cardio exercise such as running, power walking, biking, or swimming.  However, before beginning any new exercise regime, be sure to check with your healthcare provider.

In addition, continuing to learn new things can improve our memory as studies have found a correlation between challenging our brain and maintaining brain health.  This could include activities such as playing an instrument, starting a new hobby, learning a language, or just broadening your reading habits.

Other advice that not only enhances cognitive thinking but overall health includes getting enough sleep each night.  Research has shown that “powering down on a nightly basis allows the brain to heal and restore itself, clearing toxins that can lead to Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia types.”

One of MorningStar Senior Living’s newest communities, MorningStar at West San Jose, is expected to open in June. Our 69 assisted living suites will provide a supportive environment in which residents can maintain their independence and get back to living life to the fullest. We will offer a whole host of wellness programs and activities that enhance and support mental, physical, spiritual and social connections.  Each day residents will have the opportunity to engage the mind, body and spirit as well as find ways to learn and contribute.

In addition, our distinct Reflections Neighborhood will offer 34 memory care suites for seniors with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. Our holistic approach includes Montessori-based therapies, which leverage the power of music, dance, and arts and crafts to connect with and nurture the individual. Medication Safety Tips for Older Adults

February 15, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

Every year seniors are hospitalized due to prescribed medications. Statistics show drug-related problems are common in older adults and include drug ineffectiveness, adverse drug effects, over-dosage, under-dosage, inappropriate treatment, inadequate monitoring, nonadherence, and drug interactions. It is important to remember even though medication is prescribed by your healthcare provider, problems can occur.

Experts say you must follow directions and take medications as prescribed including on time, in the right dosage, with or without food, and never grinding it into a powder (unless directed by the doctor). They recommend carrying an updated list of all medications and sharing it with your doctors. Additionally, be aware of common interactions between prescribed drugs and over-the-counter medications and alcoholic drinks.

Before your doctor prescribes a new medication, ask them why you are taking it, for how long and what are the potential side effects. It is important to know what to look for and to discuss the benefits versus any negative or dangerous consequences. You will want to know, for example, if a drug will make you drowsy so you know not to drive under its influence.

Another thing to safeguard your health is to review your medications with your doctor on a regular basis asking questions such as: do you still need to take it, is the dosage correct, and is there a non-drug alternative? Despite your faith in your medical team, it is not a bad idea to check your medications against the American Geriatric Society’s “2022 American Geriatrics Society Beers Criteria for Potentially Inappropriate Medication Use in Older Adults.” The online site lists medications that may be inappropriate or dangerous for seniors.

MorningStar of West San Jose assisted living and memory care community enables residents to live life as independently as possible.  From healthy daily meals to wellness programs and activities, we have a whole range of services and resort-style amenities to ensure residents’ comfort and wellbeing.  Our care services include care managers, access to licensed nurses, and medication care managers.

Facts and Myths About Arthritis

February 13, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

In an article in Medical News Today experts discuss some of the common myths and facts regarding arthritis, a condition that causes pain and inflammation in joints. Osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are the two main types of arthritis, and a national survey found nearly half of adults 65 years and older have been diagnosed with arthritis. OA, the most common form and leading cause of disability in older adults, is the result of cartilage between the bones in a joint wearing down.

Many people believe arthritis is only a disease of the elderly but RA, while not as common as OA, typically starts in individuals as young as 20 to 40 years old. People also mistakenly think if a joint hurts, it must be arthritis. Doctors say there are several reasons a person may experience pain in and around joints including old injuries, bursitis, and tendinitis.

Another myth is you shouldn’t exercise if you have arthritis; however, studies show exercise can actually help with range of motion and strength in the joint (consult with your healthcare provider before starting any new exercise or activity). The American College of Rheumatology says, “Exercise and arthritis can and should coexist. People with arthritis who exercise regularly have less pain, more energy, improved sleep, and better day-to-day function.”

Then there is the debate on whether heat is better than ice for sore joints. The Guy’s and St Thomas’s National Health Service (NHS) Foundation Trust in the UK, explains, “Used in the right way, heat can help reduce pain and stiffness in joints and muscles. Cold application can help reduce joint inflammation and swelling.” Moreover, experts say believing arthritis is unpreventable is only partially true as there are things people can do to mitigate risk or slow down the progression such as maintaining a healthy body weight.

If you are looking for outstanding independent or assisted living, MorningStar of Idaho Falls may be the place for you. What You Need to Know Before Choosing a Retirement Home

January 27, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Retirement Home

Choosing a retirement community or home for yourself or a loved one takes careful research. Each home is unique, and no one home is ideal for everyone. It’s essential that you find a place that suits your — or your loved one’s — individual needs, and in order to do that, you need to consider many things.

What to Look for in a Retirement Home or Community

It can be overwhelming trying to sift through all the factors that should be considered before choosing a retirement home. However, focusing on these key factors will help you narrow your search and feel more confident in your decision:

The Surrounding Community

Even though much of a resident’s time is spent within a retirement home or community, there are — or should be — opportunities for residents to take trips to experience the outer community. Whether it’s to the shopping mall or the ice cream parlor, the community around a retirement home is important and shouldn’t be overlooked.

Exercise and Physical Wellness

It’s more than vital for seniors to remain physically active during their time in retirement homes. Physical fitness has been linked to lower risk of everything from arthritis to depression to influenza. It’s also a mood booster and is linked to more happiness overall.

Food and Dining

Senior living communities offer nutrition that is specifically balanced and designed for seniors. The best senior living retirement communities offer many food options and different dining options. Look for homes or communities with formal dining rooms offering sit-down meals, small cafes on site, and grab-and-go snack options.

Safety

Every senior living in a retirement home or community deserves safety. Any retirement home you may be considering needs to be impeccably clean, tidy, and safe. There should be no clutter, trash, or messes anywhere.

For example, dining areas should be disinfected and cleared promptly. Laundry should either be done routinely, or facilities should be accessible for residents to clean their clothes.

Relationships Between Staff and Residents

A lot can be determined from the way the staff members interact with residents. Make sure to watch those interactions; you want a friendly, attentive, empathetic, and helpful community.

Seniors deserve to have the opportunity to create meaningful relationships, and when staff members are respectful to residents and the residents are happy, it’s a strong sign that the retirement home is an excellent place for its residents.

Choosing the Best Retirement Home or Community

There are also other aspects of choosing a retirement home to keep in mind. For example, cost is always a factor, of course, and so is transportation. Consider the location of the retirement home; ideally, it should be near loved ones, medical facilities, shopping centers, and activity hubs.

By keeping these essential factors in mind as you search, you’ll be able to find the best retirement home for your needs.

MorningStar is guided by a culture rooted in our mission of honoring God, valuing seniors, and investing in our team, which allows us to deliver services with warmth, sincerity and depth of purpose. We have built a reputation for creating true homes filled with an atmosphere of love and community. Please contact us to learn more about the finest retirement communities Portland has to offer.

Our Executive Chef inspired meals will be largely prepared from scratch and include the freshest ingredients.  In addition, we offer a range of nutritional choices including low sodium, sugar-free, no sugar added, vegetarian and low fat so residents can self-manage their diet.  MorningStar’s Chef even uses “super foods” such as acai berries, Omega 3 fats, dark chocolate, and leafy, dark greens.

Too often seniors assume assisted living means an end to their independence, but studies show the opposite is true. When older adults get the daily personal care they need, it helps to restore their confidence and frees them up to move forward with living life to the fullest. At MorningStar, we help you do so with extensive support services, wellness programs and activities. Our contemporary suites are move-in ready and just require your furnishings and personal items. For your safety and wellbeing, each suite is equipped with handicap-accessible bathrooms and emergency call systems. We are also pet friendly!

What to Expect During a Transition to Senior Living

January 25, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

Transitioning to any new circumstance, regardless of your age or how ready you are, can be uncomfortable. The good news is that there are many things people can do to ease the transition to senior living.

Much of the fear and anxiety people feel when moving to a new home is due to the unknown. They don’t know what it will be like, and they generally feel out of place before they’re even in their new place.

It’s all normal, but it also doesn’t have to weigh heavily on your shoulders if you’re planning on moving to a senior living community soon. Taking away some of the unknown and replacing it with knowledge about what to expect can ease a lot of fear and concern.

What Will Senior Living Be Like?

Knowing what kinds of normal emotions you’ll likely experience can help you feel more prepared and ease the transition. Everyone deals with this kind of change differently, but there are some feelings that almost everyone has during the transition.

No matter what you experience during your move to senior living, make sure to talk about it with loved ones, staff members, and friends to help you feel more comfortable.

Feeling Like the “New Kid”

So many people have experienced the intimidating feeling of being in a new place where everyone else already knows each other. However, one of the best things you can do to combat this intimidation is to remember that every person in your new community was once “the new kid,” too.

Most people welcome new friends with open arms and are excited to get to know them. You’ll likely experience an overwhelming amount of lovely attention from others who want to meet you and get to know you!

Learning to Downsize

You’ll need to settle into a new space that is likely smaller than what you’re used to, and you might miss your old home. It can be difficult to let go of many belongings to downsize, but keeping one or two items from an heirloom set can ease tough feelings.

You can also recreate your old bedroom, set up lots of photos in frames, and above all else, remember that home is a feeling, not just a space.

Learning New Routines

Many of your daily routines will stay the same, but how you go about them may change. For example, instead of going to your mailbox each morning to fetch the newspaper, it might be dropped right at your front door.

Senior Living Is a Different Life, Not a New Life

Keep the hobbies that are most important to you, and go ahead and maintain as many routines as possible to make you comfortable. Remember that transitioning to senior living presents a new adventure that changes your life, but it’s still your life!

MorningStar takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003. We believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless; and we act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof. We’re Busting 5 Myths About Retirement Communities

January 23, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Retirement Home

Retirement should be a time for seniors to enjoy the best the golden years have to offer, and retirement homes are designed to add to seniors’ ability to live life to the fullest.

However, many people are misled by rumors and myths about retirement communities that have left a sour taste in their mouths. In truth, the best retirement communities offer a chance to enjoy a life you won’t want to miss.

5 Common Retirement Home Myths

Retirement is supposed to be a time when you no longer are raising your children, you don’t have to wake up early, there’s no more difficult commute to or from the office, and you enjoy things you didn’t have time for when you were younger. Retirement homes are designed to make achieving these things easier.

Here are five of the biggest myths about retirement communities that can mislead people about the opportunities that these places really afford.

Myth 1: They’re Only for Seniors Who Can’t Care for Themselves

Retirement communities, unfortunately, are often confused with nursing homes and long-term care facilities. Retirement communities are for active retirees and those needing some medical care.

Varying degrees of assistance are available to cater to different needs. These communities are designed for people who want to spend their retirement years with fewer responsibilities, like mowing lawns, cooking, and other household chores.

Myth 2: Seniors Will Lose Their Independence in Retirement Communities

When seniors are a good fit for the retirement community in which they live, they will actually become more independent than they may have been while living in their old homes. They will no longer need to rely on friends or family members to do things like laundry, grocery shopping, and house cleaning.

Myth 3: There’s No Privacy in Retirement Communities

Another myth about retirement homes is that they are set up like hospitals or care facilities, where staff members freely walk in and out of places at will. The best retirement communities offer spacious rooms with a wide range of amenities and features, and residents have control over their own privacy.

Myth 4: Retirement Communities Are Too Expensive

Quality services and so much more make retirement communities invaluable to many. This is especially true when comparing costs related to those of living in personal homes, such as:

  • Mortgages

  • Transportation

  • Housekeeping

  • Nursing

  • Maintenance

  • Taxes

These are only some of the many other costs associated with living outside retirement homes.

Myth 5: Retirement Communities Are Depressing

Nothing could be further from the truth! These are fun communities with numerous activities for residents, from table tennis, bingo, and dance lessons to yoga, movie nights, and cooking classes. Residents have opportunities to socialize with others that they wouldn’t otherwise have if they weren’t in retirement communities.

Trust Your Research, Not the Myths

When all is said and done, the myths about retirement homes that fly about are simply that: myths. Take the time to research retirement communities near you, and you’ll quickly see that they are safe, fun places designed to enhance every minute of the golden years.

MorningStar is guided by a culture rooted in our mission of honoring God, valuing seniors, and investing in our team, which allows us to deliver services with warmth, sincerity and depth of purpose. If You Had Chickenpox as a Child, You are at Risk for Shingles

January 23, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

We have all heard about shingles but many of us are confused as to whether it is contagious and what is our risk of getting it. Experts explain shingles is caused by the varicella-zoster virus, which is the same virus that causes chicken pox. Moreover, if you had chickenpox as a child, you are at risk for getting shingles sometime in your life.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports one in three people develop shingles during their lifetime. While this means many will never get shingles, some people get it more than once and others can develop flare-ups periodically throughout their lives. Dr. Michael Urban, a senior lecturer and director of the doctorate of occupational therapy program at the University of New Haven in West Haven, Connecticut, explains flair-ups can be a full range of symptoms or barely noticeable.

Statistics show in recent years younger people are getting shingles but typically the disease occurs in those over 50 years of age and the risk increases the older we get or with various health conditions. People undergoing cancer treatment as well as being ill or under a lot of stress are all at a higher risk for shingles.

Symptoms vary and include feeling like you may have the flu, and/or a red, itchy, painful rash or fluid-filled blisters. Before the rash appears, you may feel an uncomfortable sensation, numbness or tingling, and may be the only symptoms you ever experience. Experts say shingles are not contagious, but you can give someone the chickenpox if they have never had it; but only if they come in direct contact with the fluid in the blisters such as through a washcloth or bed sheet. To ensure your safety, talk to your doctor about getting a shingles vaccine if you are over the age of 50 or suffer from chronic diseases like renal failure, COPD and diabetes among others.

The Advantages of Aging Within a Community

January 20, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

Deciding when a loved one needs the support of a community isn’t easy; however, assisted living communities are solid options because seniors retain their independence while still receiving assistance as needed with daily activities.

The most obvious advantage of aging within a community might be the general support that community members receive from staff members, but there are also so many more benefits.

The Benefits of Living in a Senior Community

The following are some of the biggest and best advantages that can help you and your loved one feel more comfortable about moving into a community.

Personal Assistance with Everyday Activities

Even though residents of assisted living communities live independently, they may require some type of support from time to time. People’s needs vary as they age, and a community can meet those needs because it offers assistance with a wide spectrum of daily activities like laundry, dressing, transportation, and housekeeping.

Access to Healthcare Providers and Facilities

Assisted living communities offer on-site healthcare to a certain extent (this varies from one community to another). If your loved one requires healthcare services, they can receive that care without having to step foot outside.

Security and Safety

One of the biggest concerns caregivers have for their aging loved ones is the matter of safety. You might worry about your loved one’s ability to remain safe while driving, cooking, or even moving about the home.

Communities designed for seniors cultivate a safe environment every day. They create a culture of safety and strive to secure access, prevent falls, monitor residents’ health, be prepared for emergencies, and more.

Activities and Social Engagement

Regular social events and activities have a profound, positive effect on seniors. These activities have been shown to boost mental and physical health and improve their overall quality of life. In addition, research shows that aging adults who have an active social life may experience slower rates of memory decline than those who do not.

Senior communities make it easier for residents to meet new friends and engage in fun, exciting activities they enjoy, from board games to gardening and everything in between.

Better Nutrition

The meals served at assisted living facilities are specially designed for the health and nutrition of aging adults, many of whom would otherwise not have access to such nutrition if they were in their own homes. Residents also don’t eat meals alone, making every dining experience healthy and happy.

The Advantages of Senior Living Communities

Whether a single facility or a group of facilities make up a senior community, the benefits and advantages of aging within that community are limitless. Ultimately, the advantages boil down to improved mental, emotional, social, and physical health; what more could we ask for our loved ones?

MorningStar takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003. We believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless; and we act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof. Meaningful Activities are Beneficial for Those with Memory Impairment

January 20, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

Researchers say despite declining cognitive abilities, studies show those with Alzheimer’s disease do better when encouraged to participate in meaningful activities as it gives them a sense of purpose and self-worth. The Nation Institute of Health (NIH) reports, “engaging older persons with dementia in appropriate activities has been shown to yield beneficial effects such as increasing positive emotions, improving activities of daily living (ADL) and improving the quality of life.” One study’s author explains the act of staying engaged can help dementia patients maintain quality of life even in advanced stages of the disease.

Just as it is important for older people to stay engaged and active, it is also important for those with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia to be involved in healthy daily activities. Dementia care specialists say structure and routine helps individuals “maintain their cognitive function, sense of security, and can calm anxious or aggressive behaviors.” Especially in the early stages of the disease, these types of activities give a person a sense of control over their day. Toward the latter stages of the disease, purposeful activities can be one of the few remaining ways to engage in memories and communicate.

Studies show the creative arts are an effective way to stimulate the five senses. Singing has been shown to not only be enjoyable to those with dementia, but often is one of the last abilities they lose. A person may remember the words to a song long after other memories disappear. Dancing to or listening to popular music from their youth is another activity shown to stimulate the person’s senses and increase self-awareness, while reducing anxiety and depression. Painting or drawing can do the same for others. Experts say don’t forget the value of exercise. A short walk outside can lift spirits but make sure the person is steady on their feet as Alzheimer’s can affect gait and balance.

Along with assisted living, the new MorningStar at West San Jose will offer holistic memory care individualized for each resident and designed to stimulate or calm in response to a particular mood or situation.  Each day will be filled with activities that incorporate music, dance, art, aromatherapy, or animals to heal and comfort residents.  Please visit our website to learn more about our community and the MorningStar Senior Living company.

Are You a Senior Who Wants to Start Exercising Again?

January 20, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

If you are a senior who wants to start exercising again, you may not know how to begin.  For one thing, you probably realize you are not as fit as you used to be, and are not up to the same degree of physical activity that you once did.  And of course, before you begin any new form of exercise, you will need to check with your doctor to make sure you are fit enough, especially if you have osteoporosis, an injury, or balance issues.

Once you get the go ahead from your healthcare provider, stretching is a good place to begin.  In fact, studies show that as we grow older our flexibility decreases by up to 50 percent in some joints.  Another good thing about stretching is many exercises are appropriate for any level of fitness including ones that can be done sitting in a chair.  Stretching can help you maintain your flexibility and mobility as well as loosen up some of your stiffness in your back, neck and shoulder muscles.

Another plus about stretching exercises is that most of them do not require special equipment and can be done anywhere.  The Silver Sneakers website recommends that as you stretch, “to breathe deeply, and go slowly. Listen to your body, and never force a movement that causes pain.”  They remind seniors it is okay if they cannot bend very far as over time they will loosen up some.  Safety is always important and you do not want to hurt yourself.  Other exercises especially good for seniors include chair yoga, resistance band workouts, walking, and dumbbell strength training.

At MorningStar at West San Jose, a new senior living community, we will offer a whole host of amenities and care services as well as wellness programs that include exercises geared toward our residents.  Our community offers a choice of 69 well-appointed, private assisted living suites in a variety of floorplans.  In addition, our Reflections Neighborhood has 34 suites devoted to the specialized care of residents with memory impairment. Please contact us to learn more about MorningStar’s new community opening in June.

This post is intended for informational purposes only.  Before beginning any exercise, be sure to check with your healthcare provider.
