Learn More About Age-related Macular Degeneration

July 14, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

Just as the rest of our body ages, so do our eyes. Older adults often complain of dry, teary or tired eyes and may have problems driving at night, experience flashes and floaters or need glasses to read. As we grow older, we are also at a higher risk for serious eye diseases that can impact our vision.

One of the most common and serious eye diseases is age-related macular degeneration which is a leading cause of vision loss among people aged 50 and older. The American Macular Degeneration Foundation reports age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is more common than cataracts and glaucoma combined. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention projects by 2050 the number of older Americans with the disease will nearly double from 48 million to 88 million.

Age-related macular degeneration causes the macula, a part of the back of the eye near the retina, to deteriorate. Experts say while it doesn’t impact peripheral vision, macular degeneration can affect how well a person sees what’s right in front of them.

You are at a higher risk of getting AMD if a relative has had it or you are Caucasian, and females are more susceptible to AMD than males. Lifestyle choices also increase your risk for AMD including smoking along with elevated blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Sun exposure is another risk factor and doctors recommend wearing sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat. Maintaining a healthy diet by eating foods high in antioxidants like lutein found in green, leafy vegetables such as spinach are beneficial for our eye health.

Symptoms of AMD include visual distortions and can make straight lines appear bent, reduce central vision in one or both eyes, increase blurriness of printed words, and the need for brighter light when reading or doing close-up work. The first signs of AMD are typically discovered by an eye doctor during an annual dilated eye exam.

Is a Senior Living Community Right for You?

July 12, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in retirement communities

As more and more seniors watch friends and relatives move into retirement communities, many wonder if it is the right step for them. While obviously a decision of this magnitude should be carefully made, there is data showing most seniors in retirement communities are happy they made the move. In fact, studies further indicate seniors in such communities tend to live longer. One report from the United States General Accounting Office (GAO), states “seniors who choose to live in retirement communities live 1.5 to 2 years longer than seniors who choose to retire in their homes.”

Researchers explain that many communities offer seniors a higher quality of life with their wide range of activities including physical fitness classes, group games and other entertainment opportunities. Also, we all know maintaining a home can be stressful and even more so as we age, while retirement communities provide a virtually carefree lifestyle.

Senior communities seamlessly provide the chance to interact and socialize with like-minded people in the same stage of life, making it easy to meet and connect with people who share your interests. Again, studies find “seniors are 22% more likely to live longer and lead more fulfilling lives if they’re given the chance to socialize with others.” Moreover, researchers say active seniors have better immune systems and a lower risk of dementia; and that loneliness can lead to a greater risk of high blood pressure, depression and early mortality.

At MorningStar of Idaho Falls, we offer independent and assisted living with all the comforts of home along with graciously appointed common areas. Our broad range of services and amenities include wellness programs and activities, restaurant-style dining, bistro, fitness room, raised garden beds, and more to promote a healthy, engaged lifestyle. In addition, our Reflections Neighborhood provides compassionate care for those with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.  Please visit our website for more information.

TOURING ASSISTED LIVING COMMUNITIES: WHAT TO LOOK FOR

July 07, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

You have performed diligent research, which has helped you narrow down the choices for an assisted living facility in Portland, Oregon to just a few options. The decision on where your loved one should make the transition from an independent lifestyle to a lifestyle in which at least some of life’s responsibilities fall on the shoulders of a licensed caregiver is not an easy one to make. Each of the options on your shortlist of candidates offers several benefits that make the senior living communities a good fit for your loved one.

Now, the time has arrived to see eachassisted living facilityup close to make one of the most important decisions you can expect to ever make. You need to schedule a tour to learn more about the senior living communities on your shortlist.

Let’s review what you should look for during anassisted living communitytour.

Observe How the Caregivers Treat Residents

Perceptive observation skills come in handy when touring a senior care facility, especially when it comes to determining how the staff treats residents. You should be subtle when observing the staff, with an emphasis on looking for signs that caregivers are overwhelmed with responsibilities. Signs of an overwhelmed team of caregivers include frustration and agitation.

An overwhelmed team of caregivers might indicate a high staff-to-resident ratio.

Resident Feelings

You should go right to the source to discover how residents feel about living at the senior living facility. Expect staff members to be effusive in their praise of the community, but you might find at least a few residents have some negative things to say. TheAARP recommends asking several questionsposed to residents that help you understand the type of living environment, such as questions that ask residents what they like and dislike about living in the community.

The Extent of Social Interactions Among Residents

One of the most difficult transitions for a senior moving into an assisted living facility is leaving behind close friends and in return, trying to build new friendships with other seniors. Walk through the common dining area, as well as stop by an activities room to learn more about the extent of social interactions among the residents of a senior living facility.

Safety Features

Assisted living facilities must comply with strict state. local, and federal laws that mandate the establishment of safety and security features at assisted living facilities. You want to ensure every senior living facility on your shortlist goes beyond the minimum standards required by law for implementing safety and security procedures, especially if your loved one requires memory care services in a new living environment. Extra safety features such as walk-in showers and handrails installed throughout a facility indicate a facility takes protecting its residents seriously.

Schedule a Tour TodayOne important suggestion concerning a tour at a senior living facility: Take a formal tour, but also deviate from the tour schedule by touring other parts of a senior living facility on your own. The caregivers at MorningStar want you to gain the peace of mind required to choose our senior living facility for your loved one’s new home. MEMORY CARE COMMUNITY IN PORTLAND, OR DESIGNED FOR SENIORS’ SAFETY

July 05, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

You have many factors to consider before deciding which assisted living facility in Portland, Oregon is the best option for a loved one. Selecting a senior living community that emphasizes providing a safe and secure living environment should be at the top of the list of factors. You want to find the assisted living facility that does the best job of protecting your loved one.

One of the many reasons why MorningStar at Laurelhurst receives positive reviews is our unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and security of our residents. Let’s find out how a senior living facility should be designed for seniors’ safety.

Around-the-Clock Monitoring System

One of the most important reasons for moving a loved one into a senior living community concerns placing your loved one’s safety and security into the well-trained hands of a team of experienced caregivers. Our team members spend considerable time getting to know each resident, which means they notice even the smallest changes in mood and other behavioral patterns. The personal touch of monitoring performed by our caregivers is supported by an around-the-clock electronic monitoring system, which includes a large network of highly sophisticated security cameras.

Design Elements Dedicated to Safety

The assisted living and memory care community where your loved one moves to should feature design elements that foster a safe and secure living environment. Design features such as wider hallways, slip-resistant floors, and handrails placed in rooms and hallways help prevent accidents that can cause serious injuries. Walk-in showers, as well as easy-to-access door handles and light switches, also represent design elements that create a safer and more secure living environment for seniors. Design elements that prevent falling are an especially important part of a safety and security plan, as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports more than three million seniors each year receive treatment in emergency rooms for fall injuries.

Enhanced Protections Against Infections

With seniors considered the most vulnerable age group to infections, you should choose an assisted living and memory care community that has implemented a thorough disinfectant program. The COVID-19 pandemic, which ravaged assisted living facilities around the world, makes sanitation a top priority for our community. Our team of caregivers ensures all surfaces receive the application of a natural disinfectant that kills both the Norovirus and Coronavirus, as well as eliminates allergens. In addition, MorningStar at Laurelhurst follows all protocols established by the CDC, such as wearing personal protection equipment (PPE).

Comprehensive Emergency Plan

Natural disasters like floods, earthquakes, hurricanes, and tornadoes can negatively impact any type of structure, especially the ones that house seniors. Senior living facilities must follow the disaster response guidelines created by state, local, and federal government agencies. However, far too many assisted living facilities do not practice responding to an emergency. A comprehensive emergency response plan must include drills that educate residents to respond properly to emergencies.

MorningStar at Laurelhurst: We Make Safety Our Top Priority

We want you to gain peace of mind when you decide to move your loved one into our assisted facility in Portland, OR. The most effective way to help you achieve peace of mind is to ensure the safety of your senior loved one. Learn more about the safety and security features at our senior living community by scheduling a tour of MorningStar at Laurelhurst.

MAKE MOVING TO AN ASSISTED LIVING COMMUNITY EASIER: DON’T PACK ANY UNNECESSARY ITEMS

July 03, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

You have made several difficult decisions concerning the transition your loved one faces by moving from a home environment into an assisted living facility. After choosing the senior living facility that your loved one soon calls home, you face additional tough decisions that include which of your loved one’s possessions to bring into our assisted living facility in Portland, Oregon. The decision is especially hard because your loved one does not want to part with any of the belongings, many of which hold memories from early in your loved one’s life.
Let’s see how you can make moving to an assisted living facility easier by not packing any unnecessary items.

Ask for Help

This does not have to be a project for just one person. Enlist the support of other family members and even your loved one’s close friends to ease the burden you face regarding packing for a move into a senior living facility. Support can come in many forms that include helping decide which items to leave behind, as well as selling and donating the possessions your loved one does not bring into an assisted living facility.

Adapt to the Size of the New Living Space

Since assisted living and memory care apartments typically are much smaller than a family home, the amount of space in your loved one’s new apartment dictates what you can move into it. Ask the assisted living facility in Portland, OR for a copy of the apartment floorplan, and then measure each large item to determine what can go and what must stay. Try to maximize the limited apartment space by bringing along multifunctional furniture such as an ottoman.

Follow the Four Box Rule

Popular decorating shows present a proven method used to downsize and declutter living spaces. Place four large boxes in the largest room in your loved one’s current home. Label each box as keep, trash, donate, and sell. Work with your loved one by picking up an item, and then deciding which box the item should go in for the big move. Getting your loved one involved in the process should make it easier to separate every personal possession. If you have a difficult time deciding on a specific item, set it aside and return to it later.

Leave Behind Duplicate Items

The limited space of your loved one’s new apartment makes bringing along duplicate items tough to do. Although your loved one should have more than one set of towels and bed linens, you can leave behind other types of duplicate items such as clothes, housewares, and decorative items. In fact, the assisted living facility where your loved one moves might have restrictions on the type of decorative items allowed in a room.

Be Positive

The caregivers from MorningStar at Laurelhurst encourage you to be positive during the difficult transition period your loved one faces. Spread positive energy by keeping the mood light and positive while deciding which of your loved one’s possessions should be a part of the new living environment. If an item holds particularly fond memories and your loved one refuses to part with it, be sensitive while at the same time attempting to resolve the roadblock in the moving process.Discover more about how to make moving into an assisted living community easier by contacting one of the compassionate caregivers at our senior living facility.

Is an Elderly Parent Having Difficulty Living On Their Own?

June 26, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

Most seniors wish to maintain their independence as long as possible by living on their own; and that is why many who encounter problems in their day-to-day lives are reluctant to tell their families. The problem with this is as a senior starts to have more difficulty caring for themselves, their quality of life can be greatly diminished.

Even if mom or dad seem to be doing well on their own, experts say a rapid decline in their health from an accident or illness can catch families by surprise and make living on their own dangerous. In addition, many health conditions affect musculoskeletal, neurological, circulatory or sensory systems and impact a senior’s ability to perform the activities of daily living (ADLs). Experts say other factors indicating a need for more help include social isolation, medication side effects and the physical characteristics of the person’s home such as a second-floor bedroom. If after implementing a series of home modifications is not adequate, more measures need to be taken to keep your loved one safe.

Experts explain unmet ADLs can lead to serious health problems including “malnutrition, poor personal hygiene, isolation, illnesses like urinary tract infections (UTIs) and falls. In fact, studies show ADL disabilities are associated with an increased risk for mortality; and taking care of daily needs can help prevent new and worsening health problems.” They also report if family members notice a decline in a loved one’s overall health, taking steps now can improve their safety and forestall further problems. One solution is to make a move to an assisted living community, where a person can live as safely and as independently as possible. To ensure needs are met, homes use the ADLs as a measure of a person’s functional performance.

MorningStar at West San Jose provides carefree retirement years. COULD IT BE ALZHEIMER’S? WHEN SHOULD I START SEEKING HELP?

July 07, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

It starts with the occasional misplacement of car keys or difficulty remembering the directions to a favorite eatery. Eventually, Alzheimer’s disease becomes more noticeable, although there is often no reason to feel alarmed for a loved one. After all, growing older comes with a few blips on the radar that is a natural signal indicating the ritual of aging. However, Alzheimer’s disease represents a brain disease that turns worse over time. The disease is defined by slow changes in the brain that produce deposits of certain proteins.

More than 6.5 million seniors in the United States live with some form of Alzheimer’s disease. The key is to detect the signs, which can be difficult to do because of the slow degenerative process that brain cells go through. If a loved one shows signs of forgetting things and/or experiencing a significant personality change, you might be asking the question, could it be Alzheimer’s and if it is, when should I start seeking help?

Alzheimer’s disease triggers the following signs, which if you notice them, might make it the right time to seek help.

Memory Loss

We all experience memory lapses. However, the memory lapses associated with Alzheimer’s typically get worse and continue to persist. As memory lapses become more serious, your senior loved one might repeat statements, as well as ask the same questions several times within just a couple of minutes. As Alzheimer’s develops, your senior loved one can forget having conversations and worse, not remember appointments and important events such as birthdays. Repeatedly misplacing items represents one of the most common signs that a senior loved one lives with some stage of Alzheimer’s disease.

Diminished Cognitive Skills

Alzheimer’s disease can cause concentration lapses, especially when it comes to abstract concepts such as letters and numbers. For example, a senior loved one starts to dial a phone number only to lose focus on the task at hand because of the series of numbers required to make the call. Completing more than one task at the same time is an especially difficult thing to do for those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. Handling financial matters like balancing a checkbook or paying monthly bills can turn into a huge problem for seniors trying to live independently with Alzheimer’s.

Personality Changes

The dramatic, albeit slow changes to the brain for seniors afflicted with Alzheimer’s disease can negatively impact mood and behavior. Your senior loved one might suddenly lose interest in a once cherished hobby. Social withdrawal, especially from interacting with family members, is a common sign of Alzheimer’s disease. Significant mood changes might indicate an underlying mental health concern triggered by vast changes to the brain. The mood swings can be as dramatic as a senior loved one feeling euphoric one minute, and then expressing anger or aggression the next minute.

When Should I Start Seeking Help for Alzheimer’s?

There is not a one-size-fits-all answer to this question. Some family members require help when a loved one experiences the early signs of Alzheimer’s, while other family members seek help when a senior loved one falls into one of the later stages of the disease. Regardless of when you seek help for Alzheimer’s, oursenior living facility in Portland, Oregonprovidesthe best memory carefor residents living with the debilitating disease.

6 SIGNS OF A GREAT MEMORY CARE COMMUNITY

July 05, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

Diminished memory can make completing simple daily tasks a highly frustrating exercise for a loved one. When memory diminishes enough to pose serious threats to a loved one’s health, the time has arrived to consider a memory care community. What do you look for that defines a great memory care facility?
At our assisted living facility in Portland, Oregon, we present six signs of agreat memory care community.

Staff Gets to Know Residents

Before you arrange for a loved one to move into our senior living facility, we conduct an in-depth interview to get to know your loved one. Once moved into our assisted living facility in Portland, the team of caregivers assigned to interact with your loved one keeps track of your loved one’s cognitive and memory skill levels.

Low Staff-to-Resident Ratio

Your senior loved one deserves the most comprehensive care and at MorningStar, we foster close caregiver interactions with our residents by not overwhelming our team with responsibilities. We offer a low staff-to-resident ratio of memory care professionals that exhibit compassion and empathy. Personalized memory care is one of the most important attributes to consider for an assisted living facility.

Encourages Independence

You should look for a memory care community that encourages independence, such as allowing residents to determine when they go to bed and wake up. Residents should be able to enjoy their bathing preferences, as well as participate in activities based on their interests, not a one-size-fits-all approach taken by other assisted living facilities.

Five-Star Amenities

The memory care community that is the best match for your senior loved one should offer amenities that support participation in a wide variety of hobbies and activities. This is an especially important sign for memory care patients since they should engage in hobbies and activities like chess and checkers that stimulate the brain.

Simple Design Elements

Memory careresidents can feel overwhelmed with cognitive challenges, such as remembering the location of the dining area. Search for a senior living facility that includes simple design features to create an ambiance your senior loved one feels comfortable with when navigating the facility. For example, different wall colors for different sections of a facility can help a memory care patient remember where to go for certain activities.

Active Social Calendar

One of the proven ways to boost cognitive and memory skills for seniors involves encouraging them to interact in social settings. Although the level of care represents the most element of an assisted living facility in Portland. OR, getting your senior loved one to participate in social events comes in a close second. Regular social interactions not only can boost memory, but also can alleviate boredom, anxiety, and even depression.

Outstanding Memory Care for MorningStar Residents

At the MorningStar Senior Living Facility in Portland, we offer three lifestyle options for our residents that include memory care. MorningStar at Laurelhurst is recognized for creating a superior assisted living environment for seniors at different stages of their golden years. Thoughtful Decorating Can Make the Transition to Assisted Living Easier

June 23, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

We all know that life changes can be fraught with anxiety and fear and moving into assisted living is certainly a major change for many seniors. However, experts say there are several things families can do to help ease the transition period.

One of those things is to help your loved one make a comfortable home in their new suite. Julia Bailey, a senior associate and interior design project manager with Denver-based OZ Architecture, explains that, "Moving into assisted living often can feel like a loss of independence and privacy for your loved one, but thoughtful interior design can go a long way toward improving happiness and well-being for the resident, as well as improving overall functionality of the new living space."

Ms. Bailey cautions that you need to remember to let your loved one have a say in how their new home will be decorated, including the personal mementos and photos they want to bring with them and which ones they want to display. Triggering happy memories with sentimental items is a big step toward making their new place a real home. Also, accent pillows and pictures are an easy way to add a lot of color and attractiveness to their place.

Please keep in mind safety concerns when placing furniture and avoid using area rugs that can become trip hazards or overcrowding a room and not leaving enough space to easily navigate. Install handrails where needed and make sure there is easily accessible lighting in the bathrooms and hallways if the person is getting up at night.

Helping your loved one stay organized can improve the home’s safety as well as the aesthetic. Consider any mobility issues the person may have and make sure frequently used items are within easy reach on a shelf. Chairs and sofas should be firm and stable.

MorningStar at West San Jose offers residents a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community. The stylish floor plans of our spacious suites are well-appointed and all that is missing are your own furnishings and personal items. Also, you will not need to leave behind your furry friend as we are pet friendly. Please contact us for more information about our beautiful new senior living community.

Seniors Enjoy Summer Vegetables at MorningStar Assisted Living

June 21, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

As the years go by, the nutritional needs of seniors undergo significant transformations. Seniors require a well-balanced diet that provides essential nutrients, vitamins, and minerals to the body. Proper nutrition is pivotal in helping seniors maintain their vitality in assisted living.

At MorningStar senior living, we recognize the importance of elevated dining options. This means catering to unique dietary needs. Our dining programs support physical and mental health and improve quality of life. Our trained Executive Chefs design seasonal menus that feature the freshest ingredients, locally sourced. For summer, you can expect to see some popular summer vegetables on your plate, like tomatoes, zucchini, corn, and cabbage.

MorningStar Senior Living offers elevated dining options designed to cater to our residents' unique dietary needs. Our executive chefs and nutritionists developed our dining programs that ensure our residents receive delicious, nutritious meals supporting their overall health and wellness.

A healthy diet of summer vegetables helps seniors maintain their cognitive function and prevent cognitive decline. Fruits and vegetables support brain health and improve memory and thinking skills. Bringing summer vegetables to our assisted living community is obtained through BrainWise, a program at MorningStar.

We prioritize using ingredients that support brain health with high concentrations of vitamins, minerals, and anti-inflammatory compounds. MorningStar's culinary team is responsible for crafting delectable flavors that please both senses and taste buds. Our executive chefs also harness the "SuperFoods." These exceptional ingredients include acai berries, Omega 3 fats, dark chocolate, and dark greens.

Foods high in Omega 3 fats, antioxidants, and vitamins are great for our bodies, regardless of age. However, it is pertinent that we give our bodies the necessary minerals to continue our body’s optimal functioning as we age. We should have as many colors as possible at every meal.

Make the Most of Your Next Doctor Visit

June 21, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

Have you had the experience of walking to your car after a doctor’s visit and a question pops into your mind you wished you had asked the doctor? You are not alone. In fact, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), a division of the U.S. Dept. of Human Health & Services, reminds all of us about the benefit of preparing questions and accurate information ahead of time to provide to your physician. They say it not only improves your care, but builds trust between you and your healthcare provider, which can lead to better results.

For help on questions to ask to facilitate a more fruitful visit to your doctor and efficiently use your precious time (studies show doctors spend between 13 to 24 minutes with each patient), the AHRQ offers a series of questionnaires related to your visit. Remember typically you have a reason for the visit such as: a well visit, looking for answers for a specific medical problem, returning to discuss treatment, or getting test results. Prepare for your appointment by bringing your prescription medications as well as over-the-counter drugs you use including vitamins and dietary or herbal supplements.

When discussing a possible medical procedure, AHRQ says questions should include: why do I need this procedure; how do I prepare; when will I get the results; and how will I feel afterward? If surgery is recommended, ask if there are alternative treatments available that are just as effective; possible complications; and recovery period. AHRQ says if you are given a new medication, ask how the new drug will interact with other drugs you are taking, how long you will be on it, and common side effects. Before you leave your appointment, make sure you understand your instructions.

At the new MorningStar at West San Jose, our beautiful home is designed from the ground up to serve our residents’ every need. Falls Often Result in Serious Injuries

June 19, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

A fall can result in serious injuries especially for the elderly, who make up most cases, and can take a long time to heal. Many even lead to permanent mobility issues that limit the person’s freedom. The CDC reports that each year 3 million older adults are treated in the emergency room for a fall injury and over 800,000 patients are hospitalized due to their injuries.

Experts explain there are several reasons why the elderly are more vulnerable to falling and include medical conditions such as Parkinson’s and heart disease, arthritis, osteoporosis, hypoglycemia, diabetes, and blood pressure fluctuations. In addition, physical disabilities that affect strength and balance, poor eyesight, inner ear problems, and dehydration can also put a person more at risk for a fall. Common situations that can result in a fall include wet or recently polished floors, poorly lit areas, rugs not properly secured, stairs, and uneven sidewalks.

There are some changes you can make to fall-proof your home such replacing light bulbs in dimly lit hallways or stairways with higher wattage bulbs. Clean up clutter and make sure each room in your home has a clear, clean path to walk through and install grab bars and handrails where needed. Use a non-slip mat in the bathtub or shower and do not wear socks or loose, floppy slippers but rather a good walking shoe with support and cushioning.

If a loved one is unsteady on their feet, talk to their doctor about using a walker or cane. Also, ask if any of their medications can cause dizziness or light-headedness, and if so, is there an alternative. Doctors say if not, it is even more important to make the appropriate lifestyle changes.

At MorningStar at West San Jose, we offer residents comfort, security, and built-in companionship. Our beautiful home has suites in a selection of floor plans and a broad range of amenities, wellness programs, activities and care services. Our residents’ safety is important to us, and each suite is equipped with a handicapped-accessible bathroom and emergency call system. Specialized Care for Those With Dementia

June 16, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

When a loved one is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia, families must face the question of what the future will hold. For many a specifically designed memory care community will be the answer as it offers an environment focused on improving quality of life and keeping the resident safe.

A Place for Mom, a senior living referral website and information service, explains dementia care, also called memory care, is different from other senior care communities and features services such as 24-hour care, trained staff, memory-enhancing therapies, physical layouts that reduce confusion, a secure environment, and more. Moreover, as Alzheimer’s disease is progressive, a memory care home is equipped to care for a person from the onset to the most advanced stages.

Many of the behaviors and symptoms that develop as the disease progresses such as disorientation, confusion and aggression can be difficult for families to handle on their own. At memory care communities, the staff is experienced in managing these types of behaviors and uses specialized techniques to calm or stimulate as situations call for. In addition, a move to a memory community can reduce stress for family caregivers as caring for a loved one with dementia is often a full-time job and family members generally have other responsibilities.

Another benefit of memory care homes is the controlled environment which helps reduce confusion and disorientation for residents with proper lighting, clearly marked hallways, and a décor to encourage calmness and familiarity. Also, outside doors are locked to prevent wandering, allowing the inside atmosphere to safely encourage independence.

MorningStar at West San Jose is honored to offer this type of comprehensive memory care in our Reflections Neighborhood. We provide support to our residents and their families with the kind of services, wellness programs and activities essential to quality of life. Our approach to memory care is encompassed under the expanse of possibilities we call Lavender Sky and uses a broad range of Montessori-based therapy techniques. Contact us for more information about trusted memory care at MorningStar.

MorningStar is guided by a culture rooted in our mission of honoring God, valuing seniors, and investing in our team, which allows us to deliver services with warmth, sincerity and depth of purpose. We have built a reputation for creating homes filled with an atmosphere of love and community. Please contact us to learn more about the finest assisted living and memory care in San Jose, CA.

Some Medications May Impair Your Memory

June 27, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

As we age, many seniors experience occasional “brain fog” or forgetfulness and have trouble comprehending and processing new information. Medical experts say this may be a normal part of aging but could also be from some of the medications you are taking.

Dr. Mark Albers, a neurologist at the McCance Center for Brain Health at Harvard - affiliated with the Massachusetts General Hospital, says it is not all that uncommon for seniors to experience symptoms of brain fog when taking certain medications for the first time. He explains medications can affect memory more in aging adults as “older people tend to metabolize drugs more slowly, making them more sensitive to medications and more vulnerable to side effects.”

Other reasons medications cause more problems in seniors are they often take larger doses of a drug and more frequently as well as take several drugs to treat one health condition. Moreover, older people may have a weakened blood-brain barrier. This barrier works to block toxins and other harmful substances including drugs from entering the brain, which may account for some memory problems.

Sleep medications are one of the common medications that can be problematic. Over-the-counter sleeping aids can contain anticholinergic drugs, which are known to impair cognitive function, and some prescription sleep drugs diminish activity in parts of the brain involved in transferring short-term memories to long-term memory. Pain medications can additionally result in memory problems. The good news is once patients stop taking sleep or pain meds, modify the dose or replace the drug with a better option, many of the problems go away.
