What to Expect During a Transition to Senior Living

January 25, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

Transitioning to any new circumstance, regardless of your age or how ready you are, can be uncomfortable. The good news is that there are many things people can do to ease the transition to senior living.

Much of the fear and anxiety people feel when moving to a new home is due to the unknown. They don’t know what it will be like, and they generally feel out of place before they’re even in their new place.

It’s all normal, but it also doesn’t have to weigh heavily on your shoulders if you’re planning on moving to a senior living community soon. Taking away some of the unknown and replacing it with knowledge about what to expect can ease a lot of fear and concern.

What Will Senior Living Be Like?

Knowing what kinds of normal emotions you’ll likely experience can help you feel more prepared and ease the transition. Everyone deals with this kind of change differently, but there are some feelings that almost everyone has during the transition.

No matter what you experience during your move to senior living, make sure to talk about it with loved ones, staff members, and friends to help you feel more comfortable.

Feeling Like the “New Kid”

So many people have experienced the intimidating feeling of being in a new place where everyone else already knows each other. However, one of the best things you can do to combat this intimidation is to remember that every person in your new community was once “the new kid,” too.

Most people welcome new friends with open arms and are excited to get to know them. You’ll likely experience an overwhelming amount of lovely attention from others who want to meet you and get to know you!

Learning to Downsize

You’ll need to settle into a new space that is likely smaller than what you’re used to, and you might miss your old home. It can be difficult to let go of many belongings to downsize, but keeping one or two items from an heirloom set can ease tough feelings.

You can also recreate your old bedroom, set up lots of photos in frames, and above all else, remember that home is a feeling, not just a space.

Learning New Routines

Many of your daily routines will stay the same, but how you go about them may change. For example, instead of going to your mailbox each morning to fetch the newspaper, it might be dropped right at your front door.

Senior Living Is a Different Life, Not a New Life

Keep the hobbies that are most important to you, and go ahead and maintain as many routines as possible to make you comfortable. Remember that transitioning to senior living presents a new adventure that changes your life, but it’s still your life!

MorningStar takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003. We’re Busting 5 Myths About Retirement Communities

January 23, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Retirement Home

Retirement should be a time for seniors to enjoy the best the golden years have to offer, and retirement homes are designed to add to seniors’ ability to live life to the fullest.

However, many people are misled by rumors and myths about retirement communities that have left a sour taste in their mouths. In truth, the best retirement communities offer a chance to enjoy a life you won’t want to miss.

5 Common Retirement Home Myths

Retirement is supposed to be a time when you no longer are raising your children, you don’t have to wake up early, there’s no more difficult commute to or from the office, and you enjoy things you didn’t have time for when you were younger. Retirement homes are designed to make achieving these things easier.

Here are five of the biggest myths about retirement communities that can mislead people about the opportunities that these places really afford.

Myth 1: They’re Only for Seniors Who Can’t Care for Themselves

Retirement communities, unfortunately, are often confused with nursing homes and long-term care facilities. Retirement communities are for active retirees and those needing some medical care.

Varying degrees of assistance are available to cater to different needs. These communities are designed for people who want to spend their retirement years with fewer responsibilities, like mowing lawns, cooking, and other household chores.

Myth 2: Seniors Will Lose Their Independence in Retirement Communities

When seniors are a good fit for the retirement community in which they live, they will actually become more independent than they may have been while living in their old homes. They will no longer need to rely on friends or family members to do things like laundry, grocery shopping, and house cleaning.

Myth 3: There’s No Privacy in Retirement Communities

Another myth about retirement homes is that they are set up like hospitals or care facilities, where staff members freely walk in and out of places at will. The best retirement communities offer spacious rooms with a wide range of amenities and features, and residents have control over their own privacy.

Myth 4: Retirement Communities Are Too Expensive

Quality services and so much more make retirement communities invaluable to many. This is especially true when comparing costs related to those of living in personal homes, such as:

  • Mortgages

  • Transportation

  • Housekeeping

  • Nursing

  • Maintenance

  • Taxes

These are only some of the many other costs associated with living outside retirement homes.

Myth 5: Retirement Communities Are Depressing

Nothing could be further from the truth! These are fun communities with numerous activities for residents, from table tennis, bingo, and dance lessons to yoga, movie nights, and cooking classes. Residents have opportunities to socialize with others that they wouldn’t otherwise have if they weren’t in retirement communities.

Trust Your Research, Not the Myths

When all is said and done, the myths about retirement homes that fly about are simply that: myths. Take the time to research retirement communities near you, and you’ll quickly see that they are safe, fun places designed to enhance every minute of the golden years.

MorningStar is guided by a culture rooted in our mission of honoring God, valuing seniors, and investing in our team, which allows us to deliver services with warmth, sincerity and depth of purpose. If You Had Chickenpox as a Child, You are at Risk for Shingles

January 23, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

We have all heard about shingles but many of us are confused as to whether it is contagious and what is our risk of getting it. Experts explain shingles is caused by the varicella-zoster virus, which is the same virus that causes chicken pox. Moreover, if you had chickenpox as a child, you are at risk for getting shingles sometime in your life.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports one in three people develop shingles during their lifetime. While this means many will never get shingles, some people get it more than once and others can develop flare-ups periodically throughout their lives. Dr. Michael Urban, a senior lecturer and director of the doctorate of occupational therapy program at the University of New Haven in West Haven, Connecticut, explains flair-ups can be a full range of symptoms or barely noticeable.

Statistics show in recent years younger people are getting shingles but typically the disease occurs in those over 50 years of age and the risk increases the older we get or with various health conditions. People undergoing cancer treatment as well as being ill or under a lot of stress are all at a higher risk for shingles.

Symptoms vary and include feeling like you may have the flu, and/or a red, itchy, painful rash or fluid-filled blisters. Before the rash appears, you may feel an uncomfortable sensation, numbness or tingling, and may be the only symptoms you ever experience. Experts say shingles are not contagious, but you can give someone the chickenpox if they have never had it; but only if they come in direct contact with the fluid in the blisters such as through a washcloth or bed sheet. To ensure your safety, talk to your doctor about getting a shingles vaccine if you are over the age of 50 or suffer from chronic diseases like renal failure, COPD and diabetes among others.

The Advantages of Aging Within a Community

January 20, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

Deciding when a loved one needs the support of a community isn’t easy; however, assisted living communities are solid options because seniors retain their independence while still receiving assistance as needed with daily activities.

The most obvious advantage of aging within a community might be the general support that community members receive from staff members, but there are also so many more benefits.

The Benefits of Living in a Senior Community

The following are some of the biggest and best advantages that can help you and your loved one feel more comfortable about moving into a community.

Personal Assistance with Everyday Activities

Even though residents of assisted living communities live independently, they may require some type of support from time to time. People’s needs vary as they age, and a community can meet those needs because it offers assistance with a wide spectrum of daily activities like laundry, dressing, transportation, and housekeeping.

Access to Healthcare Providers and Facilities

Assisted living communities offer on-site healthcare to a certain extent (this varies from one community to another). If your loved one requires healthcare services, they can receive that care without having to step foot outside.

Security and Safety

One of the biggest concerns caregivers have for their aging loved ones is the matter of safety. You might worry about your loved one’s ability to remain safe while driving, cooking, or even moving about the home.

Communities designed for seniors cultivate a safe environment every day. They create a culture of safety and strive to secure access, prevent falls, monitor residents’ health, be prepared for emergencies, and more.

Activities and Social Engagement

Regular social events and activities have a profound, positive effect on seniors. These activities have been shown to boost mental and physical health and improve their overall quality of life. In addition, research shows that aging adults who have an active social life may experience slower rates of memory decline than those who do not.

Senior communities make it easier for residents to meet new friends and engage in fun, exciting activities they enjoy, from board games to gardening and everything in between.

Better Nutrition

The meals served at assisted living facilities are specially designed for the health and nutrition of aging adults, many of whom would otherwise not have access to such nutrition if they were in their own homes. Residents also don’t eat meals alone, making every dining experience healthy and happy.

The Advantages of Senior Living Communities

Whether a single facility or a group of facilities make up a senior community, the benefits and advantages of aging within that community are limitless. Ultimately, the advantages boil down to improved mental, emotional, social, and physical health; what more could we ask for our loved ones?

MorningStar takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003. We believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless; and we act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof. Meaningful Activities are Beneficial for Those with Memory Impairment

January 20, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

Researchers say despite declining cognitive abilities, studies show those with Alzheimer’s disease do better when encouraged to participate in meaningful activities as it gives them a sense of purpose and self-worth. The Nation Institute of Health (NIH) reports, “engaging older persons with dementia in appropriate activities has been shown to yield beneficial effects such as increasing positive emotions, improving activities of daily living (ADL) and improving the quality of life.” One study’s author explains the act of staying engaged can help dementia patients maintain quality of life even in advanced stages of the disease.

Just as it is important for older people to stay engaged and active, it is also important for those with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia to be involved in healthy daily activities. Dementia care specialists say structure and routine helps individuals “maintain their cognitive function, sense of security, and can calm anxious or aggressive behaviors.” Especially in the early stages of the disease, these types of activities give a person a sense of control over their day. Toward the latter stages of the disease, purposeful activities can be one of the few remaining ways to engage in memories and communicate.

Studies show the creative arts are an effective way to stimulate the five senses. Singing has been shown to not only be enjoyable to those with dementia, but often is one of the last abilities they lose. A person may remember the words to a song long after other memories disappear. Dancing to or listening to popular music from their youth is another activity shown to stimulate the person’s senses and increase self-awareness, while reducing anxiety and depression. Painting or drawing can do the same for others. Experts say don’t forget the value of exercise. A short walk outside can lift spirits but make sure the person is steady on their feet as Alzheimer’s can affect gait and balance.

Along with assisted living, the new MorningStar at West San Jose will offer holistic memory care individualized for each resident and designed to stimulate or calm in response to a particular mood or situation.  Each day will be filled with activities that incorporate music, dance, art, aromatherapy, or animals to heal and comfort residents.  Please visit our website to learn more about our community and the MorningStar Senior Living company.

Are You a Senior Who Wants to Start Exercising Again?

January 20, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

If you are a senior who wants to start exercising again, you may not know how to begin.  For one thing, you probably realize you are not as fit as you used to be, and are not up to the same degree of physical activity that you once did.  And of course, before you begin any new form of exercise, you will need to check with your doctor to make sure you are fit enough, especially if you have osteoporosis, an injury, or balance issues.

Once you get the go ahead from your healthcare provider, stretching is a good place to begin.  In fact, studies show that as we grow older our flexibility decreases by up to 50 percent in some joints.  Another good thing about stretching is many exercises are appropriate for any level of fitness including ones that can be done sitting in a chair.  Stretching can help you maintain your flexibility and mobility as well as loosen up some of your stiffness in your back, neck and shoulder muscles.

Another plus about stretching exercises is that most of them do not require special equipment and can be done anywhere.  The Silver Sneakers website recommends that as you stretch, “to breathe deeply, and go slowly. Listen to your body, and never force a movement that causes pain.”  They remind seniors it is okay if they cannot bend very far as over time they will loosen up some.  Safety is always important and you do not want to hurt yourself.  Other exercises especially good for seniors include chair yoga, resistance band workouts, walking, and dumbbell strength training.

At MorningStar at West San Jose, a new senior living community, we will offer a whole host of amenities and care services as well as wellness programs that include exercises geared toward our residents.  Our community offers a choice of 69 well-appointed, private assisted living suites in a variety of floorplans.  In addition, our Reflections Neighborhood has 34 suites devoted to the specialized care of residents with memory impairment. Please contact us to learn more about MorningStar’s new community opening in June.

This post is intended for informational purposes only.  Before beginning any exercise, be sure to check with your healthcare provider.

How to Keep Seniors Active and Engaged While Living in an Assisted Living Facility

January 18, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

One of the best ways to keep seniors happy while living in an assisted living facility is to help them stay active.

Research has shown that seniors who are physically active and have healthy social lives show lower rates of memory decline, further validating the importance of activity for seniors in assisted living communities.

Tips for Keeping Residents in Assisted Living Homes Active

Socialization is at the heart of keeping seniors active. As such, facilities need to provide residents with a safe and stimulating environment. Isolation frequently leads to depression for seniors, negatively impacting their happiness and health.

Every outstanding assisted living facility keeps its residents engaged with plenty of programs, shows, social events, games, and contests that promote socialization. Assisted living facilities are excellent alternatives for seniors who would otherwise be alone at home.

Enjoying the Outdoors

One of the best things seniors (and people of any age) can do for their health is to spend time outdoors. However, it isn’t always easy for them to leave their homes, which is why assisted living facilities are so important — they’re designed to help seniors do more, not less.

Studies indicate that getting fresh air and sunshine can lower stress and anxiety levels, improve one’s mood, and ease the kind of restlessness that residents can begin to feel if they stay indoors too long.

Participating in Programs

Being active in group settings can serve seniors not only mentally but also physically. For example, staying physically active can boost the immune system and reduce or even prevent the effects of arthritis. Seniors should get some physical activity daily to improve mobility, mood, and strength.

These types of physical activity programs can also help residents stay socially mobile and connected, as they offer opportunities for socialization during walks, group classes, and other activities.

Intellectual Stimulation

Mental stimulation is also crucial for keeping seniors happy and engaged in assisted living. Research demonstrates that keeping the mind sharp through problem-solving exercises can help ward off Alzheimer’s disease and age-related memory loss.

The best types of intellectual activities for seniors include:

  • Crossword puzzles

  • Memory games

  • Board games

  • Card games

  • Bingo

  • Sudoku

  • Puzzles

  • Trivia games

Arts and crafts projects afford opportunities for intellectual stimulation, too. Thinking, speaking, reading, writing, and learning are examples of cognitive skills that can improve with regular intellectual stimulation.

Reach the Outer Community

There are also lots of excellent outreach programs and non-profit organizations that can help seniors stay active in numerous ways. Many specifically encourage residents to stay involved in their communities outside assisted living, helping residents feel like they’re making a difference in the world.

Encouragement Goes a Long Way

One of the best things anyone can do to keep seniors active, engaged, and healthy is simply offer them encouragement. Words of motivation and support can go a long way — sometimes, people just need a little boost to find the desire to participate in activities and pastimes that bring them joy and preserve their well-being.

MorningStar is guided by a culture rooted in our mission of honoring God, valuing seniors, and investing in our team, which allows us to deliver services with warmth, sincerity and depth of purpose. Are You Taking a Medication That Could Increase Your Risk of a Fall?

January 18, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

The Center for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) reports millions of older adults fall each year—resulting in more than 34,000 deaths in 2019. Of those falls, 3 million seniors were treated in emergency departments for fall injuries; and one out of every five falls causes an injury, such as broken bones or a head injury. With these alarming statistics, experts say it is important for seniors to know their risk for a fall including whether they are taking medications associated with an increased risk.

Examples of medications that could lead to a fall include those that suppress the central nervous system as they reduce alertness and slow reactions and movements. Some of these types of drugs include anti-anxiety medications like diazepam (Valium) and lorazepam (Ativan). Additionally, antihistamines can cause drowsiness and are used in over-the-counter sleep aids like Nyquil and Sominex, or combined with acetaminophen in products like Tylenol PM.

If you or a loved one takes medication to treat an overactive bladder or tricyclic antidepressants to help lessen chronic pain, they too can affect a person’s balance. Other drugs that increase the risk of a fall are opioids such as codeine, hydrocodone and oxycodone.

Your first step to lessen your risk should be to talk to your doctor to see if you are taking any medication that could increase your possibility of a fall. Furthermore, experts say adjusting or making a change in medication is the easiest thing to do to help prevent a fall. If it is determined you are taking a medication known to cause light-headedness, dizziness, sudden drop in blood pressure, or chronically low blood pressure or hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), you and your healthcare team can regularly re-evaluate your need and dosage.

Another way to mitigate your risk for a fall is to do exercises designed to improve leg strength and balance. In addition, be sure to get an annual eye exam and update your glasses as needed. Lastly check your home for trip hazards (keep clutter out of hallways and stairways) and install grab bars and better lighting where needed.

6 Tips for Settling into an Assisted Living Community

January 16, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

Transitioning to an assisted living community can be daunting after living in your own home. However, there are some excellent and very beneficial things you can do to help you settle into your new home and enjoy the opportunities it affords.

Following recommended tips and guidelines can help ease worries and anxieties while gaining confidence in your new surroundings.

Best Tips for Acclimating to Assisted Living

Adjusting to assisted living isn’t an immediate, seamless transition, so it’s important to be patient and give yourself time to adjust. To make the most of your days in your new home, keep the following tips in mind:

1. Make It a Point to Get to Know Staff and Caregivers

Caregivers will be abuzz regarding your care plan, and you’ll likely meet fitness staff members, social directors, dining personnel, and others who lead your new community. While they will certainly make it a point to get to know you, it would ease your transition if you returned the gesture.

2. Become Acquainted with Your Neighbors

You’re always encouraged to meet your neighbors, whether they live right next door to you, down the hall, or anywhere on your floor. Every person you meet could become a good friend, so introduce yourself to as many folks as possible. If you’re nervous about this, remember that they, too, were once new to the community!

3. Don’t Shy Away from Community Events

It can be difficult during the first few weeks to get out there and get involved, but it’s imperative that you do. These activities and events are one of your community's biggest benefits, and they offer you a golden opportunity to get to know other people and learn what’s available to you.

4. Get Involved

Find out what kind of clubs, groups, and associations are active in your community; most have groups focused on specific values, interests, or hobbies. This might be anything from gardening, reading, or playing cards to resident council groups or Bible study clubs.

5. Head to the Dining Room for Meals

Don’t withdraw to your room and stay there for meals because mealtime is undoubtedly one of the highlights of everyone’s day! Dine with staff members and other residents every chance you get, schedule your meals with your neighbors, and make it a point to connect with others over a delicious meal.

6. Get Out There and Have a Good Time

Just because you live in an assisted living community doesn’t mean that your outside life gets tossed away! In fact, you might find that you have more opportunities than ever to catch a bus to the mall, a restaurant, a park, or a night out on the town!

You deserve every happiness while you become acclimated to your new home in your assisted living community. The best thing you can do is to take every opportunity to meet others and stay busy with all the fun activities that come your way!

MorningStar is guided by a culture rooted in our mission of honoring God, valuing seniors, and investing in our team, which allows us to deliver services with warmth, sincerity and depth of purpose. 7 Benefits of Participating in Assisted Living Activities and Programs for Seniors

January 13, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

Did you know that almost one million people in the United States live in assisted living communities? This means that almost one million people are active in clubs, groups, organizations, and activities, sharing common interests and enjoying the company of others.

Why Assisted Living Activities Are Important

The importance of activities for residents of assisted living communities cannot be overstated. These activities deliver an enormous array of benefits to participants, including the following:

  • Improved social connections

  • Better moods

  • Improved physical health

  • Improved cardiovascular health

  • Elevated cognition

  • Better interpersonal relationships

  • Less stress and anxiety

In addition, people who participate in assisted living activities suffer less from loneliness and don’t feel as “disconnected” as those who aren’t as active.

Additional Benefits of Assisted Living Activity Programs

Activities and programs at senior living assisted communities can positively impact a person’s life in various ways. Everyone reacts differently to participating in hobbies with others, but some additional benefits are pretty much universal.

Programs and activities give seniors something to look forward to every day or every week, and they also give participants structure for their routines. When seniors belong to a group, they enjoy a sense of security and safety as well.

For many seniors, activities at their assisted living homes give them a sense of purpose, which is vital and connected to their mental and physical health. Some of the best activities for seniors in assisted living communities include the following:

  • Cardio programs

  • Flower arranging

  • Yoga

  • Bingo and other games

  • Continuing education courses

  • Arts and crafts

  • Board games

  • Music classes

  • Going on picnics

  • Taking a bus or van to a shopping mall

  • Crossword puzzles

  • Trivia games

  • Card games

  • Dance classes

  • Movie nights

Discussion groups, such as book clubs, are also very popular activities. Entertainment can also be brought in from outside the community, such as musical groups, comedians, and theater companies.

One of the Most Important Benefits of All: A Sense of Independence

While there are countless benefits that seniors enjoy from activities, perhaps one of the most important is that they can retain their sense of independence.

When people move out of their homes and into assisted living communities or facilities, they almost always feel a sense of loss, like they are losing their independence. This loss can be enough to cause a slew of negative emotions and symptoms, including depression.

However, when there are plenty of excellent activities in which they can participate, they can retain much of their independence and be responsible for making important decisions in their lives, just like they always have. This is vital to the health and happiness of members of senior communities.

Thanks to planned activities and programs, assisted living communities are better places to live.

Our mission statement of “to honor, to value, to invest” sets us apart from other assisted living Portland, OR has to offer. We have built a foundation on honoring God, valuing our seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve. Set in a warm, loving atmosphere with beautiful surroundings and resort-style amenities, MorningStar Assisted Living & Memory Care at Laurelhurst provides outstanding assisted living and memory care.

As We Age, Social Connections Are Just as Important as Physical Exercise

January 13, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

Most of us know physical exercise is important to healthy aging. It can help us recover from injury, ease chronic pain, fight off depression and boost our energy level; but just as important are social connections. We are social beings and interacting with others has a big impact on our overall health.

The American Public Health Association reports socialization improves mood, cognition, memory recall, and is associated with healthy behaviors, including exercise. The National Institutes of Health reports elderly adults’ social participation reduces loneliness, depression and stress; and a robust social life enhances quality of life, self-efficacy and self-esteem. As socialization keeps the brain sharp it may even decrease the risk of developing dementia or slow down its progression.

Michael Rambarose, President and CEO of the Whitney Center, a Life Care community in Hamden, CT, writes, “Socialization is like the secret ingredient that makes a healthy senior lifestyle come together.” Although he is quick to add its psychological benefits shouldn’t be kept secret. He explains, “We encourage the seniors that we serve and work with to make their social lives a priority. The people and loved ones we share life with can give everything else we do more meaning.”

Are You Current on Recommended Health Screenings?

January 11, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

As we age, it is important to stay up to date with our health care including routine screenings as many diseases do not show signs of symptoms until the problem is harder to treat. Screenings also allow your physician to compare today’s readings to past tests to look for concerning signs. However, medical experts estimate over half of all adults over 65 are not current with the recommended screenings.

In many cases our age determines the type of screenings we should get. Some tests are recommended once a year, while others, like a colonoscopy, may be based on past test results and/or on the advice of your doctor.

Common screenings include annual cholesterol tests to measure the amount of cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood. Cholesterol tests can help “determine your risk for the buildup of fatty deposits (plaques) in your arteries that can lead to narrowed or blocked arteries throughout your body (atherosclerosis).” Your blood pressure should be checked each time you visit a healthcare professional, and if readings are high, it should be monitored.

Mammograms are a valuable tool to help detect breast cancer. The United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends that women 50 to 74 with an average risk of breast cancer get a mammogram every two years. For younger women and those with a higher risk, consult with your doctor.

Other types of screenings for seniors include annual skin checks to look for signs of skin cancer and bone density tests to check for loss of tissue and bone, which might indicate early signs of osteoporosis. Eye exams are important to screen for cataracts, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration. Hearing tests can help seniors get the help they need if there is a problem. Talk to your doctor about which tests they recommend for you.

What You Need to Know About Choosing the Right Retirement Home

January 06, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Retirement Home

The decision to move into a retirement home is a big one. It’s not only a major life change but also a major financial decision. With so many different types of retirement homes and so many factors to consider, it’s important to do your research before making a decision.

To help you get started, we’ve put together a guide of what you need to know about choosing the right retirement home.

What to Look for in a Retirement Home

Before you start your search, it’s important to have an idea of what you’re looking for in a retirement home. What type of amenities do you need or want? Are you looking for one that offers home care services or is more independent living? Would you prefer to live in a smaller community or something larger? Taking the time to really think about your needs and wants can make your search easier and help you narrow down your options to the best fit for you. It’s also important to consider the other residents when choosing a retirement home. Spend some time visiting the home and talking to the people who live there. Ask about how satisfied they are with the services and amenities offered, and inquire about the community’s atmosphere and culture. Getting a sense of the people and the atmosphere can give you a good idea of whether or not it’s the right fit for you.

Tips for Finding the Perfect Retirement Home

Once you’ve identified your needs and wants, you can start your search for a retirement home. The best place to begin is online. There are plenty of websites and resources dedicated to retirement homes, so you can easily compare different homes and get reviews from current and former residents. Another great way to narrow down your options is to visit retirement homes in your area and take a tour. Seeing a retirement home in person is the best way to get a feel for the atmosphere and services they offer, so make sure to take your time and explore your options. It’s also a good idea to ask lots of questions. The staff should be more than happy to answer any questions you may have about the home.

Financing Your Retirement Home

Depending on the type of retirement home you choose and how much care you need, the cost can vary significantly. Before making any decisions, it’s important to think about your budget and make sure you can afford the retirement home of your choice. The good news is there are plenty of financing options to help cover the costs associated with a retirement home. If you have a long-term care insurance policy, it may cover some or all of the costs depending on the plan. Medicare and Medicaid are also options for retirees who are in need of assistance, and there are also tax benefits available in some states.

Making the Most of Your Retirement Years

Looking into retirement homes is just the beginning. After you’ve made your decision, you’ll still need to figure out how to make the most of your retirement years. If you plan on staying active, consider joining a fitness class or volunteering at a local charity. Social activities are also great ways to stay connected with your community and make new friends. If you’re looking for more educational opportunities, many retirement homes offer classes on a variety of topics, ranging from photography to art. Take advantage of the amenities offered at your retirement home and explore your interests.

5 Memory Care Activities for Seniors Who Prefer to Be Alone

January 04, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

As people age, they may begin to experience memory loss and other cognitive decline. This can be a difficult time for both the individual and their family members. One of the best things that you can do is to find activities that are safe for seniors in memory care.

The following activities can be done alongside other people, but they are also great for seniors who prefer tranquility and would rather enjoy their activities and hobbies on their own

Reading

Reading is an activity that is beneficial for both the mind and the soul. It can be a great way for someone in memory care to learn new information or just relax and enjoy a good story. Reading is not only mentally stimulating, but it can also help to decrease stress levels and provide emotional stimulation. Reading can also help to improve language and communication skills as well as strengthen comprehension and retention. For seniors who may be struggling with reading, books on tape or large print books can be a great option.

Working On a Computer

Computers are becoming increasingly popular amongst seniors. Not only are they useful for tasks like managing finances, but they can also provide entertainment and educational opportunities. Many senior programs offer classes and tutorials in basic computer skills. For those in memory care, working on the computer can help to stimulate the mind, encourage problem-solving skills, and foster self-confidence.

Art Therapy

Art therapy has long been used as a way to help individuals in memory care reconnect with their emotions and find peace. Painting, drawing, sculpting, and other forms of art offer the chance for expression. The creative process can help seniors in memory care to reduce stress, boost self-esteem, and find a form of escape from the everyday.

Music Therapy

Music therapy is another popular activity for seniors, whether it’s in memory care or in senior living communities . Studies have shown that music can have an impact on mood and memory, so playing and listening to music can be a great way for seniors to connect with themselves and the world around them. Music can also help to reduce stress and increase relaxation.

Journaling

Journaling is an excellent way for seniors in memory care to practice self-reflection. Writing down thoughts and feelings can help to foster creative expression and can also provide a safe outlet for any stress or anxiety that the individual may be feeling. Journaling can also help to preserve memories and provide a sense of order and clarity in life.

5 Social Activities That Are Safe for Seniors in Memory Care

January 02, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

As people age, they may begin to experience memory loss and other cognitive decline. This can be a difficult time for both the individual and their family members. One of the best things that you can do is to find activities that are safe for seniors in memory care.

The following are only some of the many activities that can help stimulate the mind and improve cognitive function, as well as improve mood and reduce anxiety

Games That Focus on Memory

Staying active mentally is key for seniors in memory care. Playing games that focus on memory can help to stimulate the mind, sharpen cognitive skills, and improve the ability to recall information. Memory games like crosswords, word searches, memorization games, and more can all be fun and beneficial activities.

Educational Programs

Education programs are an excellent way for seniors to engage in stimulating activities. Learning through multimedia and interactive software can be a great way to keep the mind sharp and active. Educational programs are also an opportunity for seniors to learn new skills, stay connected to the world around them, and interact with others in a casual and meaningful way.

Physical Activity

Physical activity can be beneficial for those in memory care. Even moderate activity such as walking can help to improve balance and stability, as well as reduce the risk of falls. Stretching and strengthening exercises are also important components of a healthy lifestyle and can help to reduce the risk of chronic health conditions.

Socializing

Socializing is an incredibly important aspect of life for seniors in memory care. Some social activities that may be of benefit include attending classes, taking trips, going to church, and participating in clubs. Socializing with peers can also improve mood and increase levels of concentration.

Volunteering

Volunteering is a great way for residents in senior living communities to stay active and engaged. Not only is it good for the individuals themselves, but it can also have an impact on the greater community. Volunteering can help to reduce stress, provide meaningful interactions with others, and feel connected to the greater world.

Finding activities that are safe for seniors in memory care is an important part of helping the individual stay engaged and active. We encourage you to find activities that your loved one enjoys and that you believe will benefit them.

While this is a normal part of aging, it can be frustrating and even scary for seniors. Thankfully, there are a number of things that can be done to improve cognitive function in seniors.

Do Something New Everyday

Trying something new is a great way to increase cognitive stimulation and improve memory. Studies have shown that doing something new, like learning a new language, can help improve cognitive ability. Make sure you find time every day to do something new. This could be anything from reading a book to learning a new skill.

Keep a Written Record

Keeping a written record is a key component of memory care. Writing down important information, like dates and appointments, can help improve memory and cognitive ability. Studies have shown that seniors who keep a written record are better able to recall information than those who don't. Invest in a journal or create a system for recording important information.

Take Supplements

Taking supplements can be beneficial for seniors suffering from memory care. Certain supplements can help reduce inflammation and boost brain health. These include ginkgo biloba, fish oil, curcumin, and B vitamins. Speak to your doctor before taking any supplements.

Manage Stress

Stress can be damaging to cognitive health. It can impair memory, cause anxiety and depression, and lead to cognitive decline. Making sure you manage stress can help improve memory and overall cognitive function. Try techniques like mindfulness, yoga, and deep breathing to reduce stress.

Seek Professional Help

If you or your loved one is suffering from memory care, it’s important to seek professional help. There are memory care specialists and therapists who can help manage memory problems and provide advice and support to help with memory care.

6 Effective Tips for Seniors Suffering from Memory Care

December 30, 2022 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

As people age, they often experience a decline in their cognitive abilities. This can include difficulties with memory, executive function, and language. While this is a normal part of aging, it can be frustrating and even scary for seniors. Thankfully, there are a number of things that can be done to improve cognitive function in seniors.

In this article, we will share 6 effective tips for seniors suffering from memory care. These tips can help seniors improve their memory, focus, and overall cognitive function.

Get a Good Night's Sleep

Getting enough quality sleep is one of the best things seniors can do to improve their memory and cognitive function. A good night's sleep helps the brain's neurons regenerate and recharge. Studies have shown that seniors who get good quality sleep have better cognitive abilities than those who don't. Aim to get at least 7-8 hours of good quality sleep each night. Make sure you stick to a regular sleep schedule, and create a comfortable sleeping space.

Take Time to Relax

Stress can have a negative impact on memory and cognitive function. It can lead to cognitive decline, irritability, fatigue, and even depression. Taking time every day to relax can help reduce stress and improve cognitive ability. Make sure you give yourself some time to unwind and destress from daily life. This could include activities like yoga, tai chi, walking, gardening, or listening to music. Set aside a few minutes each day for relaxation.

Stimulate Your Mind

Keeping your mind active is key to improving memory and cognitive function. Reading, writing, solving puzzles, and engaging in discussions are all great activities for stimulating the mind. There are also plenty of brain-training apps and websites that can help you stay sharp. Research has shown that adults who engage in mentally stimulating activities have better cognitive abilities than those who don't.

Eat a Healthy Diet

Eating a healthy, balanced diet can help improve memory and cognitive function. Foods that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, like fish, nuts, and green leafy vegetables can help improve cognitive ability. Also, avoid foods that are high in sugar and processed ingredients. Eating a healthy diet can also help reduce overall stress and improve mental clarity.

Exercise Your Body

Exercise is good for the body and the mind. Regular physical activity can help improve memory and cognitive function. This is because exercise increases blood flow to the brain, which helps nourish neurons and promote communication. Exercise can also reduce the risk of developing dementia and Alzheimer's disease. Make sure you incorporate some form of physical activity into your routine.

Spend Time with Friends and Family

Social contact is important for cognitive health. Having meaningful conversations with friends and family can help stimulate the brain and improve memory. Spending time with people you care about also helps reduce stress, which can improve cognitive function. So, make sure to carve out some time to catch up with your friends and family.

5 More Questions You Should Always Ask When Considering an Assisted Living Facility

December 26, 2022 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

When you are searching for an assisted living facility for a loved one, it is important to ask the right questions. You want to be sure that the facility you choose is the best possible option for your loved one’s individual needs.

Here are 5 more questions you should always ask when considering an assisted living facility:

6. What activities are offered?

When considering an assisted living facility, it is important to ask about their activities program. Ask what types of activities are offered, such as exercise classes, arts and crafts, or educational lectures. You should also inquire about the availability of field trips or special events. This will give you an idea of the quality of life your loved one can expect at the facility.

7. What is the food like?

The food provided at an assisted living facility is an important factor to consider. Ask about the variety and quality of food available, as well as menu options. Inquire about the meal delivery system, such as room service or group dining. Additionally, ask if special dietary requirements can be accommodated.

8. What are the visiting hours?

When selecting an assisted living facility, ask about the visiting hours. Make sure that visiting hours are flexible and that family members and friends can visit during reasonable times. This will ensure that your loved one can still have regular visits with friends and family.

9. What is the cost?

When considering an assisted living facility, inquire about the cost. Ask if there are any fees in addition to the monthly payment, such as incidentals or additional services. You should also ask if there are any discounts or special payment plans available.

10. What is the facility’s policy on accepting new residents?

Finally, ask about the facility’s policy on accepting new residents. Inquire about any medical or financial requirements and determine if the facility has space for new residents. This will help you understand the process for gaining admission to the facility for your loved one.

When you are searching for an assisted living facility for a loved one, it is essential to ask the right questions. Asking the 10 questions outlined in this blog and our previous blog will help you narrow down your search and make sure you select the perfect assisted living facility. Be sure to ask all the important questions, and you can be confident that your loved one will receive the best possible care.

Clinical Trial Results Show Promise for Alzheimer’s Disease Treatment

December 26, 2022 by MorningStar Senior Living in Alzheimers care

Researchers from pharmaceutical companies Biogen and Eisai announced promising results from a clinical trial for Alzheimer’s disease. They report a monoclonal antibody treatment, called lecanemab, “reduced cognitive decline by 27% in people with early-stage Alzheimer’s compared with those on a placebo after a year and a half.”

While there a still a lot of questions as earlier studies with similar drugs have cleared amyloid plaques in the brain, which are clumps of protein that disrupt neurons and other cells, but they have not helped Alzheimer’s patient’s symptoms. According to researchers, lecanemab is the first to do so; however, the study only included 1795 people in early-stage Alzheimer’s.

Scientists say one reason why lecanemab is showing positive results while other similar drugs have not, is because it works a bit differently. Jonathan Jackson, a cognitive neuroscientist at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) explains the drug aducanumab primarily binds to amyloid protein after it has clumped together. Lecanemab starts working in an earlier stage, targeting “protofibrils.” These are strands that will most likely consolidate into plaque but haven’t done so yet.

Although there are still a lot of questions regarding the efficacy of lecanemab, doctors hope future studies will provide a clearer picture. Meanwhile, people and their families who participated in the study expressed gratitude at having the opportunity to be a part of a study “where the drug actually worked, against a backdrop of repeated failures to develop effective Alzheimer’s medications.”
