One Often Overlooked Benefit of Assisted Living

August 11, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

While we tend to think of assisted living communities as offering a range of senior care services to help residents maintain their independence, and/or places with luxury amenities and programs, there is one thing many people forget about. At MorningStar at Laurelhurst we call it built-in companionship. In other words, the easy camaraderie that grows based on the spirit of friendships and community between one resident to another as well as between residents and our dedicated team and the surrounding community.

Research continues to add to the growing evidence regarding the value of companionship and the benefit it offers to seniors. Studies are proving time and time again socialization among older adults not only keeps the brain sharp, but it can even decrease the risk of developing dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Unfortunately in today’s society, too many older adults say they feel isolated, which puts them at risk for depression.

Experts say along with keeping the elderly more mentally sharp, socialization increases a person’s sense of belonging. Knowing someone is there you can count on during life’s ups and downs is important. In fact, older adults with a good social network appear to have higher self-esteem and feel more confident.

Friends help us realize the importance of prioritizing our personal health and make it more likely we continue to take care of ourselves. Another benefit of a strong social life is it gives our lives meaning and purpose, and that life is worthwhile.

MorningStar has added another senior living community to our growing list of retirement homes. MorningStar at Laurelhurst recently opened and offers assisted living with comprehensive senior care and hospitality services and an array of luxury amenities. Our wellness programs and activities are designed to enhance quality of life for residents and make it easy to forge new bonds and develop new friendships.

For those suffering from Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, we provide compassionate, all-inclusive services. Please visit our website to inquire about availability and to take a firsthand look at the finest senior living Portland offers.

MorningStar at West San Jose’s Approach to Memory Care

August 09, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

Along with assisted living, MorningStar at West San Jose provides 34 suites devoted to the individualized care of those with memory impairment caused by Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. Our community in San Jose, CA is designed to accommodate the needs of our residents and encourages and supports their independence while keeping them safe.

Our holistic approach to dementia care is encompassed under the expanse of possibilities we call “Lavender Sky,” and is how we thoughtfully enter, embrace and explore the entirely different and isolating world of dementia. Providing loving support for our residents, we enter with insight and intentionality as we step into their “purple world” and cross over the physical and emotional boundaries that would otherwise separate us.

We also embrace the world of dementia, which begins with accepting the diagnosis, as difficult as this can be. Utilizing MorningStar’s extensive experience, we have developed a deep understanding of the brain disease, regardless of the type of dementia, and embrace the changes needed to ensure the finest care. This includes embracing our own communication style to calm or stimulate and physically embracing our tender residents as we recognize the power of touch. However, most importantly, we embrace hope.

Lavender Sky’s last component is exploration, and is approached each day with a wide range of purposeful, individualized solutions. Acknowledging that the essence of the person lies beneath the fog of the disease, we explore a person’s life, history and preferences to create a personalized care plan.

At MorningStar at West San Jose, we also feel it is our job to help support our residents’ families. Along with education, we show them how to follow our lead and enter the world of their loved ones. Please contact us for more information about our experienced, compassionate memory care.

Make Time Each Day to Practice Self-care

August 09, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

Most of us experience some level of stress whether it is just once in a while or something that bothers us on a more frequent basis. If you want to know how to handle stress better, Dr. Shalu Ramchandani, an integrative medicine specialist at the Harvard-affiliated Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, recommends following good health habits. These include eating a predominantly plant-based diet, exercising on a regular basis, sleeping at least seven hours a night and staying socially connected.

Another beneficial habit to reduce stress is to practice self-care, which is simply taking time out of your day to do something that makes you feel good. Experts recommend one of the top self-care habits is to practice mindfulness. This is as easy as taking 10 very slow breaths in and out whenever you feel stressed. Another technique is to picture yourself in a favorite, peaceful place like the beach or quiet woodland.

Self-care habits can include taking a walk out in nature, practicing yoga, taking a bath or doing some stretches before bedtime. Some people feel a sense of calm using aromatherapy with scents known to be calming like lavender, rose, bergamot and frankincense. Lighting a room using candles or getting a massage can also be effective.

Research finds watching a movie or an episode of a comedy show that makes us laugh can additionally reduce our stress hormones. For others, listening to soothing music may be calming. If coffee or caffeinated drinks make you feel jittery or anxious, cut back and replace with decaffeinated substitutes or drink water or natural fruit juices. If nothing seems to help, and your stress and anxiety levels are not improving, consult your healthcare provider.

MorningStar at Laurelhurst assisted living and memory care community provides senior care and hospitality services as well as an array of luxury amenities. To encourage residents to stay engaged physically, intellectually, spiritually and socially, we offer a complement of wellness programs and activities. Contact us to learn more about the newest assisted living Portland offers and to schedule a tour. We would love to meet you and your family.

As We Age, Routine Health Screenings Are More Important Than Ever

August 07, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

As we age, it is important to stay up-to-date with our health care including routine screenings as many diseases do not show signs of symptoms until the problem is harder to treat. Screenings also allow your physician to compare today’s readings to past tests to look for concerning signs. However, medical experts estimate over half of all adults over 65 are not current with the recommended screenings.

In many cases our age determines the type of screenings we should get. Some tests are recommended once a year, while others, like a colonoscopy, may be based on past test results and/or on the advice of your doctor.

Common screenings include annual cholesterol tests to measure the amount of cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood. Cholesterol tests can help “determine your risk for the buildup of fatty deposits (plaques) in your arteries that can lead to narrowed or blocked arteries throughout your body (atherosclerosis).” Your blood pressure should be checked each time you visit a healthcare professional, and if readings are high, it should be monitored.

Mammograms are a valuable tool to help detect breast cancer. The United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends that women 50 to 74 with an average risk of breast cancer get a mammogram every two years. For younger women and those with a higher risk, consult with your doctor.

Other types of screenings for seniors include annual skin checks to look for signs of skin cancer and bone density tests to check for loss of tissue and bone, which might indicate early signs of osteoporosis. Eye exams are important to screen for cataracts, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration. Hearing tests can help seniors get the help they need if there is a problem. Talk to your doctor about which tests they recommend for you.

Our cozy studios range in size from 412 to 473 square feet. If you require a bit more space, consider our one-bedroom, one-bath units available in sizes up to 758 square feet. Our largest suites include two-bedroom, one bath or two-bath options ranging from 750 to 905 square feet.

Each suite comes with a kitchenette with sink and refrigerator; handicap-accessible bathrooms; emergency call systems, private heating & air conditioning; and basic cable TV and utilities. August 04, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

A highly respected senior housing company, MorningStar Senior Living has 40+ independent and assisted living communities in eleven states that are designed to be true homes for their residents. MorningStar Assisted Living & Memory Care at West San Jose is our new property in San Jose, CA.

MorningStar was started in 2003 based on a unique mission statement, principles and philosophy. As Ken Jaeger, founder/CEO of MorningStar explains, his intention was to create senior living that was “defined by the human touch. I wanted to recreate my grandmother’s house, a place where one can go and feel a sense of family.”

Out of this vision, came a three-pillared mission statement that still guides the way we deliver service to our residents: Honor God in our business practices and relationships; Value all seniors as gifted and contributing individuals; and Invest generously in our team’s ability to serve well.” Even the name “MorningStar” was inspired by Mr. Jaeger’s contemplation of the bible and his commitment to relieve poverty around the world.

However, while founded on a Judeo-Christian tradition; please know that we welcome and honor all faiths and worldviews in our communities, and are committed to meeting not only residents’ social, emotional, and physical needs but their spiritual ones. In our pursuit of creating a loving home, honoring spiritual preferences is part of caring for the whole person.

In addition, we recognize our mission is advanced by hiring team members who hold true to our core values of love, respect, honesty, fairness, goodness, and kindness. They are the type of individuals who feel privileged to care for seniors and help us create the kind of culture we envision building – a Family for Life.

Our all-inclusive community offers a dining service under the direction of an Executive Chef, a range of floor plans to meet our residents’ varying needs, and onsite amenities and care services to provide carefree retirement years. Please contact us or visit our website for more information.

Overheating can be Dangerous to Our Health

August 02, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

Throughout the country, many places have experienced much hotter temperatures than usual over the last couple of years including areas typically known for more moderate climates. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) says it is not good for our brains and organs to be overheated for an extended period of time. They explain, “Sweating is the body’s natural cooling system, but when that’s not enough, there’s increased risk for developing the heat-related illness hyperthermia – signs of which include heat cramps, heat edema and heat stroke.”

While statistics report only 9 percent of American homes are without air conditioning, certain places such as along the West Coast may be as high as 50 percent and up to 20 percent for northern states. If you live in a home with it and are experiencing extreme heat, there are things you can do to stay cool. The first tip is to stay hydrated. Especially when the body is hot, it needs fluids to help cool down; and since sweating is our natural cooling system, it needs fluids to produce sweat.

Taking a cool shower or bath will bring down your body heat. A CNN article suggests using peppermint soap as the menthol in the peppermint activates the brain to tell you something you are eating or feeling is making you feel cold. If you cannot get into a shower, try wrapping cold washcloths or ice packs around your neck or place them on your wrist’s pulse points.

Other quick tips include wearing light-weight clothing in natural fabrics like cotton and to sleep in cotton bedsheets. If your area cools down during the evening and early morning hours, open windows on both sides of the house to help cool it down, and use fans to move the air through. As the morning heats up, close windows and shut the blinds and drapes. Close off unused rooms and try to limit cooking to early morning hours. Lastly, explore your city’s resources for staying cool including taking advantage of cooling centers.

MorningStar at Laurelhurst assisted living & memory care is the newest senior living Portland families should take a look at. As our name suggests, we are located in the historic Laurelhurst District where long-time residents can continue to comfortably live in familiar surroundings or near loved ones. We offer 83 assisted living suites and 32 suites devoted to the care of those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. Buying Hearing Aids Over the Counter

July 24, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

Did you know the FDA has made changes to regulations regarding hearing aids, which now makes it possible to buy an FDA approved device over the counter (OTC)? While many of us have heard about the high cost of prescription hearing aids and that Medicare typically does not cover them, you may want to know whether the experts think an OTC purchase is a good idea.

The Harvard Medical School went to Dr. James Naples, assistant professor of otolaryngology/head and neck surgery at Harvard-affiliated Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, to see if it is a viable option and to explain potential pros and cons. He explains that despite there being several types of hearing aids, they all amplify sound and use a combination of signaling processing and directional microphones to filter out background noise. However, he warns against confusing personal sound amplification products (PSAPs) with hearing aids as they only amplify sound.

To determine your level of hearing loss, experts recommend you start by getting a hearing test from an audiologist like you would get an exam from an optometrist when buying eyeglasses. This is especially necessary for severe hearing loss, as OTC devices are not appropriate for all types of hearing loss. For mild to moderate hearing loss, it may be possible to get good results by purchasing an OTC device without a hearing exam and fitting by an audiologist.

The next question routinely asked is if you will save money by purchasing an OTC hearing aid and the answer is most-likely yes as right now the average hearing aid runs anywhere between $2,000 to $4,000 per ear, and age-related hearing loss may be in one or both ears. OTC also helps reduce the price by eliminating the added expense of the hearing test along with the actual device being substantially lower. Doctors say the new regulations should increase competition and some estimates indicate prices could drop by as much as $1,600.

Dr. Naples cautions that just as drugstore readers are a great option for many, some individuals have more complicated issues that require more precise solutions. Hearing aids are the same. The doctor states the safest bet is to get a hearing test to confirm an OTC devise is right for you.

Is it Time to Consider Memory Care for a Loved One?

July 17, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

Dementia care specialists say they are often asked when the best time is to place a loved one in memory care. The simple answer is it is different for each person as well as for each family. They add that while there is no definitive answer, there may be a downside to waiting too long and typically there is not a problem moving a person into memory care in the early stages.

Experts recommend families start the search for senior living communities offering specialized memory care once the level of daily care needed has surpassed that of what a family can effectively and safely provide. Caring for a loved one with dementia is both physically and emotionally challenging for family caregivers, and caregiver burnout is a real problem that can impact the caregiver’s health and wellbeing. Placing a person in a community specializing in dementia care allows family members to ease their role as caregiver and instead spend quality time with their loved one.

It is important to keep in mind people in the later stages of Alzheimer’s lose a lot of their mobility. A petite woman trying to help her husband with the activities of daily living such as bathing, toileting, and dressing is difficult and can result in injuries to both of them. A designated memory care community can handle all of these tasks as they have the training, staff, and equipment to safely assist residents and prevent accidents.

Another common problem Alzheimer’s patients have is a tendency to wander. This is again an example of how memory care communities are equipped to handle the problem. They have areas designed for residents to safely move about in but are secure in terms of wandering away from the community and getting lost or hurt.

MorningStar at West San Jose, scheduled to open this fall, will provide specialized, compassionate care to those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  Every aspect of our Reflections Neighborhood is designed to meet the needs of residents from meaningful activities, trained caregivers, food service, security and more. If your loved one is suffering from Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia, they deserve the best care. Please contact us or visit our website for more information about MorningStar’s assisted living or memory care in San Jose.

The Benefits of Meatless Mondays!

July 17, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

Maintaining proper nutrition is vital for seniors with limited mobility or health concerns. Opting for meatless meals even once a week can help boost your health. Choosing plant-based meals offers several benefits for seniors, especially those with health concerns or limited mobility. The benefits of a meatless Monday for seniors in assisted living are improved heart health, good weight management, and enhanced nutritional intake.

If you’ve never heard of Meatless Monday, it is a global movement that encourages individuals to eat outside the box for one day a week. The campaign emphasizes the importance of incorporating more plant-based foods into our diets, such as fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, nuts, and seeds.

Because plant-focused meals are typically lower in saturated fats and cholesterol, these meals are beneficial to seniors struggling with heart health. Red and processed meats contribute to elevated levels of cholesterol in the bloodstream, increasing the risk of heart disease and cardiovascular issues. High blood pressure and inflammation are other issues associated with heavy meat consumption.

Maintaining a healthy weight is a top concern for caretakers of seniors with limited mobility. Plant-based diets are generally lower in calories and can assist seniors in achieving and maintaining a healthy weight without abundant exercise. By opting for nutrient-dense meals, seniors reduce calorie intake and easily manage their weight.

Meals without meat do not need to be boring! By exploring outside of your usual eating routine, you can experience new and exciting flavors and food combinations without meat. At MorningStar, our executive chefs celebrate vibrant fruits and vegetables with a complexity of herbs and spices. Next time you’re in our dining room, our chefs would be happy to help you devise a meatless meal option that is sure to surprise your taste buds.

If you don’t think you can dedicate a whole day to eating meat-free, try incorporating healthier options alongside your favorite meal. BrainWise is a program at MorningStar that incorporates “Super Foods” into our daily eating. Our culinary specialists prioritize the use of ingredients known to support brain health by their high concentrations of vitamins, and anti-inflammatory compounds like acai berries, Omega 3 fats, dark chocolate, and dark greens.

July 12, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

Some people think a move to an assisted living community signals an end to their independence but nothing could be further from the truth. At MorningStar at West San Jose we respect the fact that seniors have spent a lifetime living independently, raising families, working jobs, and making their own decisions, and consider it our job to continue to help them lead full, purposeful lives.

As one ofMorningStar’s assisted livingresidents, you will receive the personal daily care you need to help maintain your independence. Our services include help with the ADLs (activities of daily living) such as bathing, dressing, toileting, transferring, continence, eating and more. Our trained care managers are there to help navigate any changes in your health and ensure you get the proper level of care you need.

MorningStar’s scheduled transportation services, medication management, and pharmacy services make it easy to safely get to important doctor visits, and keep prescriptions filled and dispensed as needed. Residents will also enjoy the built-in companionship and numerous perks of community living, including all day dining with healthy and delicious meals served restaurant style. TOURING ASSISTED LIVING COMMUNITIES: WHAT TO LOOK FOR

July 07, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

You have performed diligent research, which has helped you narrow down the choices for an assisted living facility in Portland, Oregon to just a few options. The decision on where your loved one should make the transition from an independent lifestyle to a lifestyle in which at least some of life’s responsibilities fall on the shoulders of a licensed caregiver is not an easy one to make. Each of the options on your shortlist of candidates offers several benefits that make the senior living communities a good fit for your loved one.

Now, the time has arrived to see eachassisted living facilityup close to make one of the most important decisions you can expect to ever make. You need to schedule a tour to learn more about the senior living communities on your shortlist.

Let’s review what you should look for during anassisted living communitytour.

Observe How the Caregivers Treat Residents

Perceptive observation skills come in handy when touring a senior care facility, especially when it comes to determining how the staff treats residents. You should be subtle when observing the staff, with an emphasis on looking for signs that caregivers are overwhelmed with responsibilities. Signs of an overwhelmed team of caregivers include frustration and agitation.

An overwhelmed team of caregivers might indicate a high staff-to-resident ratio.

Resident Feelings

You should go right to the source to discover how residents feel about living at the senior living facility. Expect staff members to be effusive in their praise of the community, but you might find at least a few residents have some negative things to say. TheAARP recommends asking several questionsposed to residents that help you understand the type of living environment, such as questions that ask residents what they like and dislike about living in the community.

The Extent of Social Interactions Among Residents

One of the most difficult transitions for a senior moving into an assisted living facility is leaving behind close friends and in return, trying to build new friendships with other seniors. Walk through the common dining area, as well as stop by an activities room to learn more about the extent of social interactions among the residents of a senior living facility.

Safety Features

Assisted living facilities must comply with strict state. local, and federal laws that mandate the establishment of safety and security features at assisted living facilities. You want to ensure every senior living facility on your shortlist goes beyond the minimum standards required by law for implementing safety and security procedures, especially if your loved one requires memory care services in a new living environment. MAKE MOVING TO AN ASSISTED LIVING COMMUNITY EASIER: DON’T PACK ANY UNNECESSARY ITEMS

July 03, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

You have made several difficult decisions concerning the transition your loved one faces by moving from a home environment into an assisted living facility. After choosing the senior living facility that your loved one soon calls home, you face additional tough decisions that include which of your loved one’s possessions to bring into our assisted living facility in Portland, Oregon. The decision is especially hard because your loved one does not want to part with any of the belongings, many of which hold memories from early in your loved one’s life.
Let’s see how you can make moving to an assisted living facility easier by not packing any unnecessary items.

Ask for Help

This does not have to be a project for just one person. Enlist the support of other family members and even your loved one’s close friends to ease the burden you face regarding packing for a move into a senior living facility. Support can come in many forms that include helping decide which items to leave behind, as well as selling and donating the possessions your loved one does not bring into an assisted living facility.

Adapt to the Size of the New Living Space

Since assisted living and memory care apartments typically are much smaller than a family home, the amount of space in your loved one’s new apartment dictates what you can move into it. Ask the assisted living facility in Portland, OR for a copy of the apartment floorplan, and then measure each large item to determine what can go and what must stay. Try to maximize the limited apartment space by bringing along multifunctional furniture such as an ottoman.

Follow the Four Box Rule

Popular decorating shows present a proven method used to downsize and declutter living spaces. Place four large boxes in the largest room in your loved one’s current home. Label each box as keep, trash, donate, and sell. Work with your loved one by picking up an item, and then deciding which box the item should go in for the big move. Getting your loved one involved in the process should make it easier to separate every personal possession. If you have a difficult time deciding on a specific item, set it aside and return to it later.

Leave Behind Duplicate Items

The limited space of your loved one’s new apartment makes bringing along duplicate items tough to do. Although your loved one should have more than one set of towels and bed linens, you can leave behind other types of duplicate items such as clothes, housewares, and decorative items. In fact, the assisted living facility where your loved one moves might have restrictions on the type of decorative items allowed in a room.

Be Positive

The caregivers from MorningStar at Laurelhurst encourage you to be positive during the difficult transition period your loved one faces. Spread positive energy by keeping the mood light and positive while deciding which of your loved one’s possessions should be a part of the new living environment. If an item holds particularly fond memories and your loved one refuses to part with it, be sensitive while at the same time attempting to resolve the roadblock in the moving process.Discover more about how to make moving into an assisted living community easier by contacting one of the compassionate caregivers at our senior living facility.

Is an Elderly Parent Having Difficulty Living On Their Own?

June 26, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

Most seniors wish to maintain their independence as long as possible by living on their own; and that is why many who encounter problems in their day-to-day lives are reluctant to tell their families. The problem with this is as a senior starts to have more difficulty caring for themselves, their quality of life can be greatly diminished.

Even if mom or dad seem to be doing well on their own, experts say a rapid decline in their health from an accident or illness can catch families by surprise and make living on their own dangerous. In addition, many health conditions affect musculoskeletal, neurological, circulatory or sensory systems and impact a senior’s ability to perform the activities of daily living (ADLs). Experts say other factors indicating a need for more help include social isolation, medication side effects and the physical characteristics of the person’s home such as a second-floor bedroom. If after implementing a series of home modifications is not adequate, more measures need to be taken to keep your loved one safe.

Experts explain unmet ADLs can lead to serious health problems including “malnutrition, poor personal hygiene, isolation, illnesses like urinary tract infections (UTIs) and falls. In fact, studies show ADL disabilities are associated with an increased risk for mortality; and taking care of daily needs can help prevent new and worsening health problems.” They also report if family members notice a decline in a loved one’s overall health, taking steps now can improve their safety and forestall further problems. One solution is to make a move to an assisted living community, where a person can live as safely and as independently as possible. To ensure needs are met, homes use the ADLs as a measure of a person’s functional performance.

Thoughtful Decorating Can Make the Transition to Assisted Living Easier

June 23, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

We all know that life changes can be fraught with anxiety and fear and moving into assisted living is certainly a major change for many seniors. However, experts say there are several things families can do to help ease the transition period.

One of those things is to help your loved one make a comfortable home in their new suite. Julia Bailey, a senior associate and interior design project manager with Denver-based OZ Architecture, explains that, "Moving into assisted living often can feel like a loss of independence and privacy for your loved one, but thoughtful interior design can go a long way toward improving happiness and well-being for the resident, as well as improving overall functionality of the new living space."

Ms. Bailey cautions that you need to remember to let your loved one have a say in how their new home will be decorated, including the personal mementos and photos they want to bring with them and which ones they want to display. Triggering happy memories with sentimental items is a big step toward making their new place a real home. Also, accent pillows and pictures are an easy way to add a lot of color and attractiveness to their place.

Please keep in mind safety concerns when placing furniture and avoid using area rugs that can become trip hazards or overcrowding a room and not leaving enough space to easily navigate. Install handrails where needed and make sure there is easily accessible lighting in the bathrooms and hallways if the person is getting up at night.

Helping your loved one stay organized can improve the home’s safety as well as the aesthetic. Consider any mobility issues the person may have and make sure frequently used items are within easy reach on a shelf. Chairs and sofas should be firm and stable.

MorningStar at West San Jose offers residents a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community. The stylish floor plans of our spacious suites are well-appointed and all that is missing are your own furnishings and personal items. Also, you will not need to leave behind your furry friend as we are pet friendly. Please contact us for more information about our beautiful new senior living community.
