Useful Tips Regarding Senior Living

October 21, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

The decision to move into senior living is a big one for older adults. It may mean giving up a much beloved family home; or it could be health conditions are such that more daily care is required. Other times, it is the desire to simplify life to better focus on things that bring joy and fulfillment.

If you are a senior who has started the search for assisted living due to a need for more daily personal care, please understand, assisted living services are designed around helping residents maintain their independence. Another important benefit is the peace of mind residents have knowing someone is always around to help.

Most assisted living communities offer healthy meal services as well as lots of programs and activities to help keep residents engaged and entertained. Moreover, who doesn’t love the idea of maintenance-free living as well as laundry and housekeeping services? Another feature is enhanced safety with modifications geared toward accessibility and mobility with things like handicap-accessible bathrooms, wide hallways, handrails and ramps. Emergency 24/7 call systems ensure caregivers know there is a problem.

The next consideration is what community is the best fit for you. Start by taking the time to do some research regarding senior living communities in your area. Also talk to your healthcare providers, friends, family and other trusted advisors as to what they have heard about local communities. Check out the websites of top contenders, and remember to include proximity to family and to services you use on a regular basis. If you no longer drive, check to see if the community offers transportation services.

One of the best ways to get a feel for a senior living community is to schedule a tour. Plan to spend a couple of hours there, and if possible, ask to join residents during mealtime. Experts say use your senses including how welcoming does the place feel from the moment you step in through the front door. If you plan to move into senior living as a couple, ask if there are any discounts.

At the MorningStar of Parker senior living community, we are honored to offer the area’s finest independent living, assisted living and memory care. Our smartly-designed independent and assisted living suites are available in various sizes and configurations and offer a wealth of resort-style amenities, services and programs.

Contact us to set up a tour to experience firsthand our trusted community.

A Person’s Balance Declines With Age

October 21, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

Falls among senior citizens are all too common, and in many cases, threaten a person’s independence and way of life. Injuries from falls include to the head, hip fractures, and in extreme cases lead to death; and poor balance is one of the reasons people fall.

Experts explain a person’s balance declines with age due to loss of sensory elements, the ability to integrate information and issue motor commands; and loss of musculoskeletal function as well as poor vision and inner ear problems. Certain medications and common medical conditions in older adults can also cause problems. Balance begins to decline in midlife, starting at about age 50. In one study, adults in their 30s and 40s could stand on one foot for a minute or more. By age 50, the time decreased to 45 seconds.

The National Institute on Aging (NIH) explains maintaining good balance as you age and learning about fall prevention can help you get around, stay independent, and carry out daily activities. Targeted exercises like walking, strength training and workouts designed to improve stability are some of the best ways to improve balance. Consult with your doctor as to whether a physical therapist or other professional could help design suitable exercises to improve your balance.

Also talk to your doctor about any dietary changes you should make if your balance problems are due to high or low blood pressure. Something as simple as eating less salt, maintaining a healthy weight and exercising may help with high blood pressure.

If you have low blood pressure and experience dizziness, do not stand up too quickly, drink plenty of fluids such as water and avoid alcohol. Your doctor may need to evaluate if it is safe for you to drive. To reduce your risk of a fall, avoid walking in the dark, wear low-heeled, rubber-soled shoes; and if you need a mobility aid such as a cane or walker, use it.

The Benefits of Telehealth for Seniors

October 18, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

In today’s fast-paced world, technology has opened up countless new possibilities, and healthcare is no exception. One of the most significant advancements in recent years has been the rise of telehealth, especially for seniors. Telehealth refers to using digital platforms—such as video calls or phone consultations—for medical appointments. For seniors living in assisted living Portland communities, telehealth has quickly become a game changer, offering a range of benefits that go far beyond convenience.

Getting to an in-person doctor’s appointment can be challenging for many seniors. Mobility issues, transportation barriers, or simply the logistics of leaving the comfort of home can make routine visits difficult. Telehealth eliminates these hurdles by allowing seniors to consult with their healthcare providers from the comfort of their homes. Whether in senior living Portland residences or independent living situations, accessing care via telehealth ensures that seniors stay connected with their doctors without the stress of travel.

Another critical benefit of telehealth is that it can improve access to specialized care. In the past, if a senior needed to see a specialist, they might have had to wait weeks for an appointment, often needing to travel long distances. Now, with telehealth, specialists are usually just a video call away. This is particularly useful for managing chronic conditions, where timely and consistent medical advice can prevent health complications.

Telehealth also allows doctors to monitor a patient’s progress more regularly, making adjustments to treatment plans as needed without the delay of waiting for an in-person visit.

Beyond the medical advantages, telehealth can also provide peace of mind for seniors and their families. With the ease of checking in virtually, family members can participate in appointments and stay informed about their loved one’s health, even if they live far away. This level of involvement reassures both seniors and their families that healthcare needs are being met in a timely manner, providing a sense of reassurance and peace of mind.

For seniors residing in  retirement home Portland settings, telehealth can also reduce exposure to illnesses. By minimizing the need for in-person visits, seniors are less likely to come into contact with contagious illnesses—something especially important during flu season or other times when viruses are prevalent.

Telehealth is proving to be an invaluable resource for seniors, offering convenient, accessible, and timely healthcare. It’s a technology that empowers seniors to take control of their health, stay connected with their care team, and enjoy the peace of mind that comes with knowing help is always just a call away. This empowerment can make seniors feel more in control of their health journey.

Knitting and Crocheting – A Stitch in Time for Mental Health

October 18, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

At first glance, knitting and crocheting might seem like simple hobbies, but these crafts offer far more than just colorful yarn projects. For seniors in assisted living, they provide a surprising boost to mental health, helping to reduce stress, increase focus, and even improve cognitive function. Across our assisted living Idaho Falls community, it’s common to see residents happily stitching away—and reaping the benefits along the way.

How Knitting and Crocheting Support Mental Wellness

  • Relieving Stress: The repetitive motion of working with yarn creates a calming effect, similar to meditation. Many residents find that just 10 or 15 minutes of knitting helps them unwind.

  • Boosting Focus and Memory: Following a pattern stimulates the brain, encouraging concentration and memory retention—important skills at any age.

  • Creating Purpose: Completing a project, whether a blanket or a scarf, offers a sense of achievement and purpose, which can lift spirits and promote self-worth.

  • Enhancing Fine Motor Skills: The delicate movements required for knitting and crocheting help maintain dexterity in the fingers and hands, which can be especially helpful for seniors managing arthritis or other joint conditions. Keeping these skills sharp can support independence in daily tasks.

  • Encouraging Social Connection: Crafting together—whether in knitting circles or community classes—provides meaningful social interaction. These gatherings reduce loneliness and build friendships, contributing to better mental well-being. Some residents enjoy starting group projects, like making quilts or hats for charity, which brings a sense of teamwork and joy.

  • Promoting Mindfulness and Emotional Regulation: Yarn work allows seniors to be present in the moment, helping them tune out worries or anxious thoughts. For those struggling with grief or significant life transitions, crafting provides a gentle way to process emotions while creating something tangible and beautiful.

One of our residents, Eleanor, shared how crocheting became her go-to activity after her husband passed away. “It gave me something to focus on, especially on days when I felt lost. Now I make baby blankets for charity, and it feels good to know I’m creating something meaningful.”

Connecting with Others Through Yarn

Knitting and crocheting also open doors to social interaction. Many seniors form knitting circles where they share patterns, swap stories and work on projects together. These gatherings offer more than just crafty conversation—they foster a sense of community and belonging.

Crafting with family is another excellent way to strengthen relationships. Imagine sitting with your grandchild, teaching them how to make their first scarf. Those moments are priceless and help build a bridge between generations, creating memories that last a lifetime.

From boosting mental health to fostering social connections, knitting, and crocheting offer more than just beautiful creations. They bring joy, comfort, and meaning to life within senior living communities—one stitch at a time.

Gut Health as We Age

October 18, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in dementia care

Like other parts of our bodies, the digestive system slows down as we age and can cause problems. However, like other parts of our bodies, there are things we can do to improve its health including watching our diet and exercising.

The muscles that move food through the digestive system become weaker with age causing food to move slower through the body resulting in problems like constipation, bloating and discomfort. Another issue is bacteria levels in the gut change with age. The body does not make as many good bacteria, which in turn, increases bad bacteria. Along with the digestive system slowing, our closely related immune system also begins slowing.

As an older person, you may develop sensitivity and intolerances to certain foods that can cause bloating and distention of the abdomen due to a buildup of excessive gas. Eating too fast, which increases your chances of swallowing too much air with each bite or consuming veggies like broccoli and cabbage, beans and other foods slow to digest; may be the culprit.

Other things interfering with the gut can be medications commonly taken by seniors. Drugs used to control blood pressure and pain meds can further slow down the gut and cause constipation. Inactivity and not drinking enough fluids throughout the day can also affect the efficiency of our digestive system. Nonetheless keep in mind; it is important to bring serious ongoing problems to the attention of your healthcare provider.

At the MorningStar of Parker senior living community, we pride ourselves on providing everything seniors need to enhance quality of life and make it easy to safely and comfortably age in place. Our beautiful community offers 49 suites for independent living and 54 suites for assisted living in a wide range of floorplans to address residents’ needs and preferences. The Best Autumn Activities for Seniors to Enjoy

October 16, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

Autumn, a season of magic and beauty, unfolds in the picturesque landscapes surrounding senior living Portland communities. As the air turns crisp and the leaves burst into a symphony of vibrant hues, it’s a perfect time for seniors to immerse themselves in a variety of enriching activities, feeling inspired by the natural world around them.

Staying active and engaged doesn’t just brighten the day—it’s essential for physical and mental well-being. Here are some of the best autumn activities that can add a touch of joy and a warm embrace to any senior’s routine, making them feel uplifted and comforted.

Leaf Peeping:

Leaf peeping is the simple joy of admiring the beautiful fall foliage. In Portland, there’s no shortage of stunning parks and scenic areas to take in the fiery reds, oranges, and yellows of the season. A gentle walk through a park or a scenic drive around the city can provide breathtaking views while also offering fresh air and light exercise.

For those who prefer a guided experience, nature tours provide an excellent opportunity to learn more about the local environment while enjoying the beauty of autumn.

Pumpkin Decorating:

This fun and creative activity isn’t just for kids. Seniors can spend a relaxing afternoon decorating pumpkins with paint, markers, or stickers, creating festive fall décor without the mess of carving.

This low-mobility option is perfect for anyone who wants to celebrate the season in a safe and enjoyable way. Plus, decorated pumpkins make wonderful decorations for personal spaces in retirement home Portland settings, bringing the spirit of fall indoors.

Baking Seasonal Treats:

Autumn is synonymous with comforting flavors like cinnamon, apples, and pumpkin. Seniors can enjoy baking delicious fall treats like pumpkin pies, apple crisps, and spiced cookies. Baking is a delightful sensory experience—from the oven’s warmth to the delicious smells—and a fun way to try new recipes and share the results with friends and family.

In assisted living Portland communities, group baking activities are a great way to enjoy these seasonal flavors while socializing with neighbors, fostering a sense of connection and inclusion among seniors.

Indoor Activities:

As the weather cools down, indoor activities like puzzles, board games, and book clubs offer hours of entertainment. Many senior living communities host game nights, book discussions, or crafting sessions, providing seniors with a chance to stay mentally active and socially engaged without leaving the comfort of home.

Autumn offers endless possibilities for seniors to stay active, creative, and engaged indoors or outside. With the simple beauty of nature and the joy of seasonal activities, fall is a time of warmth, connection, and celebration for seniors everywhere.

Improve Your Diet With Tasty, Nutritious Foods

October 16, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

When dieting, it is best to shy away from fried foods, foods loaded with empty carbs and sugary foods. Dieticians say that still leaves a lot of tasty food we can eat without feeling guilty. At the top of the list are non-starchy vegetables of which there are many ways to prepare them to ensure they are both satisfying and tasty.

If vegetables aren’t your favorite food, it may be you are not creative enough in preparing them. A simple suggestion is to give your veggies a quick spray of olive oil, add seasoning and a few cloves of garlic. Either roast or air fry to give them a punch of flavor. If you love dips, think about switching up from heavy-caloric dips to ones using salsa or low-fat yogurt.

A list of veggies nutrient-dense and light in calories includes broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, carrots, sprouts and kale. If you want fruits, the best to eat are watermelon and cantaloupe, most berries and kiwi. Beata Rydyger, a registered nutritionist based in Los Angeles, says “Along with these foods being beneficial for weight maintenance and weight loss, they are very high in macronutrients such as carbohydrates and micronutrients including vitamins and minerals.” Moreover, these foods are rich in fiber, and fiber keeps blood sugar levels stable and keeps you feeling fuller longer.

Other foods that fill you up are nuts and seeds. While they are higher in calories than fruits and veggies, a handful contains protein as well as vitamins and minerals. Snacking mid-afternoon on a cup of low-fat cottage cheese, hard-boiled egg or cup of tuna helps ensure you won’t overeat at dinner time. Remember to stay hydrated throughout the day. Drinking a glass of water or bone broth before a meal can help reduce the amount you eat during the meal. However, dieticians say when making any dietary changes, you should start slowly and work with your healthcare provider.

If you are looking for assisted living, MorningStar at West San Jose may be the place for you. We provide residents a carefree lifestyle to help live life to the fullest. Along with care services, our beautiful community offers five-star dining, wellness programs and activities to promote a healthy, engaged lifestyle.  Amenities include a bistro, theater, fitness center, salon, sky terrace and underground parking. Breast Cancer Awareness – How Seniors Can Help Spread the Word

October 16, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

October brings a wave of pink ribbons and awareness events, but breast cancer education is more than just a once-a-year effort.

Here in our senior living community, residents take pride in staying involved and supporting important causes like breast cancer awareness. Seniors, with their unique life experiences and wisdom, have a pivotal role to play in spreading the word, sharing personal experiences, and inspiring action across generations.

Ways Seniors Can Make an Impact

Whether it’s through small gestures or more significant events, seniors play a powerful role in raising awareness. Here are a few simple ways to make a difference:

  • Participate in Awareness Events: Many assisted living Idaho Falls communities host walks or local charity fundraisers. Joining in—even virtually—helps boost visibility and encourages others to participate.

  • Share Personal Stories: If you or someone close to you has experienced breast cancer, your story could inspire others to get screened or learn more about early detection. Seniors often have a wealth of life experiences to offer, and those stories carry weight.

  • Volunteer or Craft for the Cause: Some residents in our community knit pink scarves and hats to donate to cancer patients, creating both awareness and comfort.

  • Organize a Health Discussion or Educational Session: Partner with healthcare professionals to host a casual Q&A session within the community. Residents can invite family and friends to join, creating a supportive space to learn about early detection, mammograms, and lifestyle tips for breast cancer prevention. The shared knowledge can inspire attendees to be proactive about their health.

  • Use Social Media to Share Awareness: Even small posts can have a big reach. Seniors can post pictures of themselves participating in events, wearing pink, or crafting for the cause. A simple status update or shared article with a personal note can spark conversations and motivate others to take action. Some residents in assisted living Idaho Falls have even started group social media challenges, encouraging friends and family to join the movement online.

Engaging the Family and the Community

Many seniors find joy in spreading awareness through family connections. It’s a way to bond, share experiences, and support each other. For example, Janet, one of our residents, encouraged her daughter and granddaughter to join her for a local awareness walk. “It was special to do it together,” Janet shared. “Not only did we support a good cause, but I felt like I was teaching them the value of community.”

You could also take the opportunity to share the importance of breast cancer screenings with friends or neighbors. Whether it’s through social media, a phone call, or a casual conversation over coffee, even small reminders can make a lasting impact.

Breast cancer awareness isn’t just about wearing pink—it’s about education, action, and connection. Seniors have the ability to lead by example, showing how staying informed and engaged can change lives. With the support of assisted living communities, spreading awareness becomes a meaningful way to give back and inspire hope.

Keep Sharp With Brain Games

October 14, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

Over the last couple of decades, researchers have found brain-training games may help improve attention levels, logic skills, and memory as well as enhance cognitive function in healthy subjects. Shaheen Lakhan, MD. Ph.D. FAAN, a physician-scientist and clinical development specialist and founding neurology department chair and curricular dean at California University of Science and Medicine writes the following: “The brain is just like a muscle – it thrives on exercise! As a neurologist, I’m thrilled by the incredible potential of brain games to help people flex their mental muscles, activating underused brain circuits to sharpen cognition and skills like focus, speed, and memory.”

Experts say effective brain games include Sudoku and crossword puzzles. With crossword puzzles, cognitive skills used include recollecting past verbal knowledge and memories. Sudoku relies on short-term memory, which is often one the first sign of Alzheimer’s, and requires the player to look ahead to plan out subsequent moves.

Android and iOS offer several apps for brain games that are either free, include in-app purchases or require a subscription to open more games. One game is Elevate that centers on reading, writing, speaking and math; and allows you to customize training on areas you wish to focus on. Another game, Luminosity, was involved in a study that showed people who played the games for “15 minutes a day at least seven days a week for three weeks experienced improved attention and motor speed.”

MorningStar at West San Jose is a vibrant community offering luxury senior living in beautiful surroundings.   Our focus is on providing everything residents need to live their best life with onsite amenities, best-in-class dining, and an array of senior care and hospitality services. What Are Probiotics and Prebiotics?

October 11, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

The last several years have brought probiotics and prebiotics into the spotlight. However, it can be confusing as to what the difference is between the two and the role they play in our bodies. Experts say both are important to our health; probiotics are beneficial bacteria, while prebiotics are food for these bacteria.

In other words, “Probiotics are live bacteria found in certain foods or supplements and can provide numerous health benefits. Prebiotics are substances from types of carbs (mostly fiber) that humans can’t digest. The beneficial bacteria in your gut eat this fiber.”

The Harvard Medical School explains our large intestine has 100 trillion good bacteria essential to our health called microbiome. These good microbes help maintain healthy bowel function. Each person has their own unique microbiome from birth and we add to the good microbes by the food we consume. However, a diet high in sugar and fat can negatively affect gut health by encouraging the growth of bad bacteria, allowing them to grow faster and colonize more easily, without as many helpful bacteria to prevent it from happening.

Research shows certain foods like yogurt and kefirs with live, active cultures are beneficial to adding to our microbiome. Unpasteurized, fermented foods like kombucha, miso, sauerkraut and sour pickles contain healthy microbes but most packaged fermented foods are pasteurized, which destroys the microbes. The best way to get around that is to learn to ferment foods at home.

Experts say while there are many probiotic supplements on the market, it is not easy to find exactly what you need. Most probiotic supplements contain just a few bacterial strains, compared to the many stains naturally found in the gut. “Although there are many claims made by probiotic products, there’s now reliable, evidence-based support that certain probiotics — like Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium (bacteria), and Saccharomyces boulardii (yeast) — are generally safe and helpful in specific conditions.”

This post is intended for informational purposes only.  Please contact your health care provider with any questions or concerns you have regarding your health.

MorningStar at West San Jose’s foundation is based on the mission to honor God, value seniors and invest in our staff to create a unique senior living experience.  Set in a warm, loving atmosphere with beautiful surroundings and resort-style amenities, we provide the finest assisted living and memory care in San Jose.  Contact us or visit our website to learn more.

Coping with the Emotional Challenges of Aging

October 04, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

As we journey through life, we encounter various emotional challenges. For elderly individuals, the aging process brings its own set of emotional hurdles to overcome. Whether you’re a senior looking for guidance or the adult child of an aging parent seeking to provide support, it’s essential to understand and address these challenges to ensure a fulfilling and happy life. Today, we’ll explore some tips and strategies to cope with the emotional challenges of aging.

Understanding the Emotional Landscape

As we age, we may experience a wide range of emotions. From grappling with changes in physical abilities to confronting the loss of loved ones, the emotional landscape can be complex. It’s common for seniors to feel a sense of loss, loneliness, or uncertainty about the future. Adult children may also struggle with feelings of guilt or helplessness as they witness their parents navigating these challenges.

3 Tips for Seniors: Nurturing Emotional Well-Being

  1. Cultivate Connections: Stay connected with friends, family, and community members. Social interaction is vital for emotional well-being. Consider joining social groups or clubs tailored to your interests.

  2. Engage in Mindfulness: Practice mindfulness and relaxation techniques to reduce stress and anxiety. Yoga, meditation, and deep breathing exercises can help you stay emotionally resilient.

  3. Pursue Hobbies and Passions: Stay engaged with activities and hobbies you enjoy. Whether gardening, painting, or learning a new skill, nurturing your passions can bring joy and fulfillment.

3 Tips for Adult Children: Supporting Aging Parents

  1. Open Communication: Encourage open and honest conversations about emotions and fears. Creating a safe space for dialogue can strengthen the emotional bond between you and your aging parent.

  2. Explore Assisted Living Options: Researching assisted living Portland can provide valuable insights into supportive communities designed to cater to seniors’ emotional and physical needs. These communities offer a sense of belonging and professional assistance, alleviating emotional burdens.

  3. Foster Independence: Support your parent’s independence while offering assistance when needed. Empowering them to make decisions and maintain a sense of autonomy is crucial for their emotional well-being.

Navigating the Transition to Senior Living Portland

Transitioning to a senior living community can be a significant emotional milestone for both seniors and their families. It’s a time of adjustment, adaptation, newfound social connections, and personal growth opportunities. Embracing this transition as a positive step towards enhanced emotional well-being can make the journey smoother.

Embracing Change: Finding Joy in New Opportunities

Moving into an assisted living Portland community can open doors to a vibrant lifestyle filled with enriching activities, new friendships, and comprehensive support services. Embracing change as an opportunity for personal growth and fulfillment can positively impact the emotional well-being of seniors and their families.

Remember, seeking support and guidance is a sign of strength, and together, we can create an emotionally fulfilling journey through the golden years.

Strategies for Improving Sleep Quality in the Elderly

October 02, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

Good sleep is crucial for maintaining overall health and well-being, especially for seniors. However, many older adults struggle with getting restful sleep. Let’s explore some practical strategies to help improve sleep quality for seniors, particularly in assisted living Portland communities.

Create a Relaxing Bedtime Routine

A consistent bedtime routine can signal the body that it’s time to wind down. Activities such as reading a book, listening to calming music, or taking a warm bath can promote relaxation and make it easier to fall asleep.

Optimize the Sleep Environment

It is essential to make the bedroom a sleep-friendly environment. Ensure the room is cool, dark, and quiet. Investing in a comfortable mattress and pillows can also make a significant difference. Blackout curtains or a white noise machine might help create a peaceful sleeping space.

Mind Your Diet

What we eat and drink can impact sleep quality. Encourage a light dinner and avoid heavy meals close to bedtime. Reducing caffeine and alcohol intake in the evening can prevent sleep disturbances. Instead, opt for a soothing herbal tea or warm milk before bed.

Stay Active During the Day

Regular physical activity can promote better sleep. Seniors should aim for light exercises such as walking, stretching, or yoga. These activities can help regulate the sleep-wake cycle. Just be sure to avoid vigorous exercise close to bedtime, as it can have the opposite effect.

Limit Naps

While napping can be beneficial, long or irregular naps during the day can negatively affect nighttime sleep. If a nap is necessary, keep it short and earlier in the day.

Manage Stress and Anxiety

Stress and anxiety are common culprits of poor sleep. Deep breathing exercises, meditation, or gentle yoga can help calm the mind. Talking about worries with a friend or family member can also alleviate stress.

Monitor Medications

Some medications can interfere with sleep. It’s important to review all medications with a healthcare provider to identify any that might be causing sleep issues. They might suggest adjustments or alternatives that are less disruptive to sleep. It’s crucial to consult a healthcare provider before making any changes to medications to ensure seniors’ safety.

Stick to a Sleep Schedule

Going to bed and waking up at the same time every day, even on weekends, can help regulate the body’s internal clock. This consistency can make it easier to fall asleep and wake up feeling refreshed.

Engage in Relaxing Activities

Encouraging hobbies that promote relaxation can be beneficial. Activities like knitting, painting, or gardening help keep the mind engaged during the day and make it easier to unwind at night.

Seniors Need to be Alert to Scammers

September 30, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

The Federal Trade Commission reported in 2023, adults in the U.S. lost a record $10 billion to fraud. They want us to remember scammers are skilled and persuasive, and use tactics designed to catch us off guard.

A common scam is to phone older adults and pretend to be from organizations like the IRS, Social Security Administration or Medicare. During the call, they ask for personal information, and if the person is reluctant to give it, they threaten to cut off benefits. Once they have your information, they use it to commit identity theft.

Be wary of calls from someone who claims you have won a lottery or prize and the only hitch is you need to send money or gift cards to cover taxes and processing fees. Also don’t be taken in by a popular scam claiming your computer is compromised and you need to pay them to fix it. Especially targeted at seniors is a caller pretending to be a grandchild or relative (or their friend) pleading for money to be wired to get out of jail or other types of trouble.

To protect yourself, change your passwords often and make sure they are complicated. Use two-step verifications when you have the option. Be careful of giving out any information over the phone, in emails or through texts. Avoid transferring money or purchasing gift cards over the phone. Experts say once you complete such a transaction, the money is typically unrecoverable. Finally if you are targeted by a scam, notify your local police department or reach out to the National Elder Fraud Hotline.

Retirement is a well-deserved phase of life that brings new opportunities to explore passions and hobbies. Finding enjoyable activities can significantly enhance the quality of life for seniors in retirement communities, bringing fulfillment and a sense of purpose.

Whether you’re a senior searching for a new pastime or an adult child looking to suggest engaging activities for your loved one, here are some of the best hobbies for senior living Portland residents to pick up in retirement.

Gardening

Embracing nature and enjoying the tranquility of gardening can be incredibly rewarding for seniors. Tending to a garden not only provides physical activity and mental relaxation but also a profound sense of accomplishment. Planting flowers, growing vegetables, or caring for indoor plants can bring joy and a deep connection to the earth, empowering seniors with a tangible result of their efforts.

Creative Arts

Engaging in the creative process can be deeply enriching for seniors in retirement communities. Painting, drawing, or crafting can be not just a pastime, but a therapeutic and stimulating experience. Working on creative projects allows seniors to express themselves artistically, fostering a sense of inspiration and engagement while honing their fine motor skills. Joining a local art class can provide valuable social interaction while exploring new talents.

Book Club

For seniors who enjoy reading, joining a book club can be a fantastic way to stay mentally active and connected with others. Sharing thoughts and insights on books can lead to lively discussions, fostering social engagement and intellectual stimulation. Look for local libraries or community centers that host regular book club meetings.

Yoga and Meditation

Encouraging seniors to practice gentle yoga or meditation can promote holistic well-being. These practices offer numerous health benefits, including improved flexibility, reduced stress, and enhanced mindfulness. Seniors can explore beginner classes or follow instructional videos tailored to their age group to support their physical and mental wellness.

Woodworking

Woodworking is a timeless hobby that allows seniors to create beautiful and functional pieces while working with their hands. Engaging in woodworking projects can boost confidence and provide a sense of achievement. It’s essential to ensure a safe workspace and consider joining a local woodworking group to share knowledge and experiences.

Boost Your Immune System with Garlic: A Natural Approach for Seniors

September 27, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

As we age, it becomes increasingly important to prioritize our overall well-being and explore natural ways to strengthen our immune system. Aging often leads to a decline in immune function, leaving us more susceptible to illnesses. However, research suggests that garlic could play a significant role in boosting immune health for older individuals, providing caregivers with a reassuring solution to support their loved ones’ health.

Exploring the Benefits of Garlic

Garlic offers several health benefits for the immune system.

  • Garlic contains allicin, a potent compound with antibacterial and antiviral properties, which can help the body fight off infections and strengthen the immune system.

  • Regular consumption of garlic has been shown to rejuvenate immune function, particularly in older adults, offering additional protection against common illnesses like colds and flu.

  • The anti-inflammatory effects of garlic can support overall immune health, especially in older adults, by reducing inflammation and promoting a healthy immune response.

  • In addition to its immune-boosting properties, garlic has been associated with potential cardiovascular benefits. Garlic may help promote heart health by lowering blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

Incorporating Garlic into the Diet of Seniors in Assisted Living Portland

Garlic-Roasted Vegetable Medley: Combine your favorite vegetables with olive oil and minced garlic, then roast them for a flavorful and immune-boosting side dish.

Adding Garlic to Soups and Stews: Incorporating garlic into your recipes enhances the taste and immune-boosting potential of your soups and stews.

Garlic-Infused Olive Oil: Use garlic-infused olive oil for sautéing or as a healthy option for dressing salads, adding flavor and immune-boosting benefits to your meals.

Garlic Supplements: For those who may not enjoy the taste of garlic, supplements are an alternative way to reap its health benefits. Consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new supplement regimen.

Making Garlic a Part of Your Routine

In our community, we’ve seen firsthand how incorporating garlic into daily meals can benefit residents’ immune health. From delicious recipes to simple additions like garlic-infused oils, there are many ways to enjoy the advantages of this powerful ingredient. The Evolution of Nutritional Programs in Senior Living

September 25, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

Nutritional programs in senior living communities have come a long way over the years. Today, they are designed to meet the unique dietary needs of older adults, promoting health, vitality, and overall well being. Let’s explore how these programs have evolved and how they can benefit seniors, especially those in senior living Portland.

Tailored Meal Plans

One of the most significant advancements in nutritional programs is the shift toward personalized meal plans. These plans consider individual health conditions, dietary restrictions, and personal preferences.

Focus on Fresh and Local Ingredients

There has been a growing emphasis on using fresh, locally sourced ingredients. This supports local farmers and ensures that meals are packed with nutrients. Fresh produce, lean meats, and whole grains are staples in our meal plans, contributing to better health and higher energy levels for our residents.

Special Dietary Needs

Modern nutritional programs are adept at catering to special dietary needs. Whether it’s low-sodium options for those with hypertension, gluten-free meals for those with celiac disease, or diabetic-friendly dishes, our menus are designed to accommodate a wide range of dietary requirements. This attention to detail helps maintain the health and happiness of residents in retirement home Portland.

Social Dining Experiences

Mealtime is more than just eating; it’s a social experience. Today, dining programs encourage residents to dine together, fostering a sense of community and reducing feelings of isolation. Shared meals are a time for conversation and connection, making dining an enjoyable part of the day.

Tips for a Healthy Diet

Here are some simple tips to maintain a healthy diet:

  • Include a variety of fruits and vegetables in every meal.

  • Choose whole grains over refined grains.

  • Opt for lean protein sources like fish, poultry, and legumes.

  • Limit sugary snacks and beverages.

  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day.

The Role of Supplements

While a balanced diet is the best way to get nutrients, sometimes supplements are necessary. We work with healthcare providers to ensure that residents receive any additional vitamins or minerals they might need, particularly for those with dietary restrictions or specific health conditions.

The Importance of Hydration

Staying hydrated is crucial for overall health. Dehydration can lead to various health issues, including urinary tract infections and kidney problems. We encourage our residents to drink water regularly and offer a variety of hydrating beverages at mealtimes.

Creating a Vibrant Community

In senior living Portland, we’ve seen firsthand how comprehensive nutritional programs can enhance the quality of life. By focusing on personalized, nutritious, and enjoyable meals, we help our residents stay healthy and active. Sharing these meals together strengthens our community bonds and creates a supportive, vibrant environment.

Nutritional programs have evolved to prioritize health, taste, and community. By incorporating fresh ingredients, accommodating special dietary needs, and fostering social dining experiences, we can ensure our residents enjoy a high quality of life. Let’s continue to embrace these advancements to support the wellbeing of our beloved seniors.

Vitamin B12: Why It's Essential for Elderly Metabolism and Brain Function

September 23, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

Vitamin B12 is an essential nutrient vital for maintaining a healthy metabolism and optimal brain function. For seniors in assisted living Portland, understanding the significance of this vitamin and ensuring adequate intake can significantly enhance overall health and wellbeing.

Let’s explore why Vitamin B12 is so important and how to incorporate it into daily life.

Boosting Metabolism

Vitamin B12 is critical to a healthy metabolism. It helps convert food into energy, which is crucial for maintaining an active lifestyle. As we age, our metabolism naturally slows down, making getting enough B12 to keep energy levels up even more important. Seniors in assisted living Portland communities often benefit from a balanced diet rich in Vitamin B12 to stay active and energized.

Supporting Brain Function

One of the most significant benefits of Vitamin B12 is its role in brain health. It supports the maintenance of healthy nerve cells and helps produce DNA and RNA, the body’s genetic material. Adequate B12 levels can improve memory and cognitive function, which is particularly important for preventing cognitive decline in older adults. This makes it a vital nutrient for residents in retirement home Portland settings.

Recognizing B12 Deficiency

Recognizing the signs of a Vitamin B12 deficiency is essential, as it can lead to serious health issues if left untreated. Common symptoms include:

  • Fatigue or weakness

  • Memory loss or cognitive difficulties

  • Numbness or tingling in the hands and feet

  • Difficulty walking or balance problems

  • Mood changes or depression

If you or your loved ones experience these symptoms, it might be time to check B12 levels with a healthcare provider.

Sources of Vitamin B12

Incorporating Vitamin B12-rich foods into the diet is a natural way to ensure adequate intake.

Here are some great sources:

  • Meat and poultry

  • Fish and shellfish

  • Eggs and dairy products

  • Fortified cereals and plant-based milk

For those who follow a vegetarian or vegan diet, fortified foods, and B12 supplements can help them meet their daily requirements.

Tips for Boosting B12 Intake

Here are some practical tips to increase Vitamin B12 intake:

  • Include a serving of fish or poultry in your weekly meal plan.

  • Enjoy eggs for breakfast a few times a week.

  • Choose dairy products like milk, cheese, and yogurt as snacks.

  • Look for cereals and plant-based milks fortified with Vitamin B12.

  • Consider B12 supplements if dietary intake is insufficient.

The Benefits of Regular B12 Intake

Ensuring regular intake of Vitamin B12 can lead to numerous health benefits, such as:

  • Increased energy levels

  • Improved memory and cognitive function

  • Better mood and reduced risk of depression

  • Enhanced nerve function and reduced risk of nerve damage

  • Support for a healthy cardiovascular system

These benefits can significantly enhance seniors’ quality of life, promoting physical and mental wellbeing.

In retirement home Portland, we’ve seen firsthand how maintaining adequate Vitamin B12 levels can positively impact our residents’ health. Regularly including B12-rich foods in meals and monitoring health with our dedicated staff ensures everyone stays vibrant and healthy.

Vitamin B12 is essential for maintaining a healthy metabolism and supporting brain function in seniors. Seniors can enjoy improved health and wellbeing by recognizing the signs of deficiency and incorporating B12-rich foods into the diet. Let’s make B12 a priority in our daily lives to ensure our golden years are vibrant and fulfilling. Together, we can thrive.

Finding a Community for a Loved One Living With Alzheimer’s Disease

September 20, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

Are you considering a community setting for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia?  Experts say the first and most important thing to learn about senior living communities offering memory care is whether they are up to the task of caring for your loved one.  Do services align with their needs and is the home capable of advanced care down the road?  A Place for Mom’s website says by asking the following questions, you should get the answers you need.

Before you begin your search, they suggest taking a few minutes to think about the needs of your loved one.  Do they have a tendency to wander or exhibit aggressive behaviors?  Do they require help with eating and drinking?  Are they mobile or use a wheelchair or walker?  Other information to relay is if they need help toileting, require 24/7 supervision, or care for medical conditions such as diabetes.

Once you establish that a memory care community is equipped to care for your loved one, now ask questions including how experienced is the staff; and do they have any special training.  If so, is it on-going?  Will your loved one have an individualized care plan?  Also, what is the staff-ratio during the day and at night?

Inquire about safety protocols starting with secured doors, courtyards, and grounds as well as an emergency call system.  Are hallways color-coded making it easier for residents to navigate about more independently?   Is there a nurse on duty, and how extensive are medical services?   Also, ask about the type of memory care activities and treatments available.  After you have learned what you can, experts say to trust your instincts when making the final decision.

MorningStar at West San Jose’s goal is to provide the highest quality senior living which includes compassionate memory care for those in the early onset of dementia through to the most advanced stages.  Our holistic approach to care is designed to affirm the value of the person and to find ways to celebrate the smallest successes.  Beginning with dedicated caregivers to activities, programs and meals tailored to our residents’ special needs, we bring a deep understanding of the disease to our care.  Please contact us for more information about our Reflections Neighborhood and to set up a tour.

MorningStar is guided by a culture rooted in our mission of honoring God, valuing seniors, and investing in our team, which allows us to deliver services with warmth, sincerity and depth of purpose. We have built a reputation for creating homes filled with an atmosphere of love and community. Contact us or visit our website to learn more about the finest senior living in San Jose, CA.
