4 Decorating Tips for Your Space in Retirement Homes

May 01, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Retirement Home

Having your own personalized living space is key to making your retirement home comfortable.

You might feel overwhelmed by all of the decorating ideas out there. Which styles should you incorporate? Follow these tips to decorate retirement homes in ways that make each day beautiful for seniors.

1. Plan Around Comfort and Mobility

While having an aesthetically pleasing living space is important, your health and safety should be your top priority. Plan your decorations around any mobility aids, comfort items, and safety devices that you need.

For example, if you need a handle in your shower, avoid putting up shelves that get in the way of these fixtures. You can still decorate your bathroom without sacrificing your safety.

Many seniors in retirement homes like to put up family photos. However, you should make sure any photos on walls or furniture don’t get in the way of chair lifts and other mobility aids.

2. Add Plenty of Greenery

Plants are a breath of fresh air in retirement homes everywhere. They smell pleasant and give you something to care for each day without requiring too much maintenance.

Take a trip to your local nursery or gardening store, and select some of your favorite plants for your home. You can also pick out stylish pots and hangers that match your other decorations.

Always check the rules for your retirement home’s community before bringing in plants or animals.

3. Avoid Unsafe Decorations and Materials

Retirement homes often have strict safety rules regarding household items. This is to prevent fires and injuries from harming the community.

When you’re decorating, keep the materials you are using in mind. For example, glass decorations are much more hazardous than plastic and other softer materials. Glass decorations could break, shatter, or cut you as you move around your space.

Items like candles and lighters are not good decorations, as they are major fire hazards. Instead, opt for an electronic candle or scented beads to keep your home smelling fresh and inviting.

4. Pick a Theme that Works Year-Round

While you can certainly decorate with seasonal items, it’s a good idea to make your home’s theme universal. This will prevent you from having to refresh your entire decorating scheme every few months.

By picking a non-seasonal decorating theme, you can buy staple items that last year-round, such as pillows, throw blankets, and wall hangings. This means you can spend less money and need less maintenance while still keeping up with your personal style.

Make Your Space Your Own with Decorations in Retirement Homes

Retirement homes are comfortable, safe spaces for seniors to enjoy daily life. You don’t have to give up your personal aesthetics and styles when you move. Choose safe, stylish decorations to make your space your own.

The Dining Experience at MorningStar’s New Community in San Jose

April 26, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

At MorningStar Senior Living, we understand the importance of gathering as a community to “break bread” each day.  We believe food is a healing medicine unlike any other, and when our residents sit down to a delicious meal served restaurant-style, it creates lasting bonds and fellowship within our “family.”

We recognize that good nutrition is especially important to the wellbeing of seniors, which is why MorningStar meals are prepared largely from scratch and feature the freshest ingredients from high-quality producers, locally sourced when possible.  Menu offerings are designed by our Executive Chef and include daily and weekly specials as well as a la carte items. Dining is available all day which means you can eat when you are hungry and not according to a rigid schedule.

As a resident, you will be treated to seasonal menus and special holiday feasts such as those we enjoy at Thanksgiving and Christmas.  Also, our Chef modifies menus and recipes to accommodate residents’ changing needs and tastes.  Moreover, you can easily self-manage any dietary restrictions as we offer a wide selection of low sodium, sugar-free, no sugar added, and low-fat foods.

MorningStar also believes that nutrient-rich ingredients can help stimulate the appetite and support brain health.  Therefore, we prepare meals using BrainWise super foods that contain a high concentration of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds.  Super foods include acai, leafy dark greens, dark chocolates, berries, and fish, nuts and other foods high in Omega 3 fats.

For our memory care residents, food is as much about Community as it is about Nutrition. To encourage appetites, our team members sit and share meals with residents, and many are served “family style” as they are in private homes.  Much of our food is modified out of respect for residents’ somewhat compromised eating abilities and includes finger foods, texture-modified diets and easy-to-recognize balanced meals that taste as good as they look.

MorningStar at West San Jose will be opening soon and join MorningStar’s 40+ senior communities either in operation or under construction in eleven states.  If you are looking for exceptional assisted living or memory care in San Jose, we encourage you to contact us and discover why MorningStar is a great place to call home.

MorningStar is guided by a culture rooted in our mission of honoring God, valuing seniors, and investing in our team, which allows us to deliver services with warmth, sincerity and depth of purpose. We have built a reputation for creating homes filled with an atmosphere of love and community. Please contact us for more information about the finest assisted living and memory care in San Jose.

A Fun Activity To Do With Your Parent or Grandparent

April 24, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

If an elderly parent is in a senior living community and has limited mobility, you may feel it is difficult to think of things to talk about or to do when you visit.  Scrapbooking is an activity that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. Also, it can be more than just a means to pass the time and preserve memories for seniors but can be beneficial to them as well.

By organizing an activity such as scrapbooking, it can help to keep everyone engaged as well as inspire your loved one to start sharing stories about the “good old days.”  As you start documenting their life story, it will likely bring back memories they may have forgotten and/or ones the rest of the family knows nothing about.  Along with exercising the brain with recollections of the past, scrapbooking can boost self-esteem, improve one’s dexterity and increase socialization by introducing new topics of conversation.

To get started, visit your local craft store or shop on the Internet for scrapbooking supplies that will help you create a book that is uniquely your parent’s.  Your next step is to help gather and organize the photos and materials in chronological order that will go into the scrapbook.

If the project seems too overwhelming for your parent, have them pick a theme such as family vacations or weddings through the years, or do one that focuses on their childhood and early years.  Before you start to glue things in, take the time to layout the photos and mementos for each page; and most importantly, encourage and enjoy the stories and memories shared by your loved one.

If you are looking for a senior living in San Jose, we encourage you to consider MorningStar at West San Jose. Our beautiful new community will have a host of amenities, care services and wellness programs as well as activities that include arts and crafts projects.  Scheduled to open this summer, we will offer well-designed private assisted living suites as well as suites in our Reflections Neighborhood devoted to the individualized care of those with memory impairment.  Please see our website to learn more.

MorningStar takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003.  We believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless; and we act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof. April 21, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

Wellness programs are a comprehensive approach to promoting the physical, mental, and emotional health of seniors in assisted living communities. These programs typically incorporate a wide range of activities, from exercise classes to cognitive stimulation, with the goal of improving the overall quality of life for seniors. The wellness programs at MorningStar of Parker are designed to help seniors stay engaged and socialized while maintaining their physical and mental health.

In addition to focusing on creativity, our assisted living community also offers a variety of fitness and exercise programs. These programs help seniors stay active and maintain their physical health. Some of the fitness programs include yoga, tai chi, and chair aerobics. Older Adult Fall Prevention

April 21, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

When an older adult trips and falls, it can be life changing. Consequences include serious head injuries, hip fractures and broken bones, and in the worst cases, fatalities. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports 3 million seniors were treated in emergency departments for fall injuries in 2020. Furthermore, more problems can arise as many seniors need several months to recover, which can cause a decline in strength and mobility as well as mental agility. It can also lead to the loss of independence and isolation.

Statistics show most falls happen for a handful of reasons and being forewarned may help prevent one. The environment, especially the person’s home and surrounding outdoor area is one of the biggest culprits. Danger spots include slippery bathtubs, high mattresses, steep stairs, poorly lit hallways, loose rugs, obstacles in walkways and clutter. Experts say a little bit of time spent addressing these problems with things like non-slip bathmats and grab bars, more lighting, removing clutter, etc. can help prevent a fall.

Another risk factor for a fall is chronic health conditions that affect balance and mobility. Arthritis, heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure can mean a person might experience dizziness or be unable to control muscles to stop a fall.

Growing older also puts us at risk for diseases like glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and cataracts, which in turn, leads to more accidents. Solutions include having yearly eye exams and making sure your eyeglass prescription is up to date.

Experts say it is important for seniors to stay as fit as possible as aging affects muscle strength, flexibility and coordination. Check with your doctor for information on balance and strength exercises. If a medication is making you dizzy or drowsy, talk to your doctor about it. There may be another drug just as effective and doesn’t have the same side effects.

The new MorningStar at West San Jose senior living community is close to Highway 85, and convenient to medical facilities, retail centers and recreational areas. Our contemporary 4-story building offers 69 assisted living suites in a variety of floorplans. In addition, for those with Alzheimer’s and other types of memory loss, the Reflections Neighborhood provides safety, security, and programs to help preserve the person’s dignity and self-worth. We open soon so don't miss out. Our premium suites are filling up fast.

MorningStar at West San Jose’s foundation is based on the mission to honor God, value seniors and invest in our staff to create a unique senior living experience. Set in a warm, loving atmosphere with beautiful surroundings and resort-style amenities, we provide outstanding assisted living and memory care. Are You No Longer as Flexible as You Used to Be?

April 19, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

Have you noticed you are no longer as flexible as you used to be and the movements of your limbs and joints feel more restricted? If it is harder to do things like turning your neck to look behind you when driving or getting up from a low chair, you would probably benefit from incorporating stretches into your routine. Experts say daily stretching can make significant improvement in flexibility, the ability of the muscles and tendons to lengthen and stretch in response to movement, and allow a joint to move through its range of motion.

In addition, being more flexible improves balance and lowers the risk of a fall. Stretching increases the range of movement in the joints, improves posture and eases muscle tension and soreness as well as increases circulation. Along with dedicated stretching exercises, seniors can increase flexibility with yoga, Pilates, swimming, tai chi, dancing and massage.

A study on a 12-month stretch and flex program for older adults reported by the Journal of Gerontology found “participants demonstrated positive changes in areas like physical fitness, self-efficacy, perceived functioning, and well-being. They also experienced a decrease in pain.”

It is easy to do stretching exercises as they do not require special equipment and can be done anywhere. However, before beginning any new exercise routine including stretching, consult with your healthcare provider regarding your fitness level. Experts say you should warm up before stretching such as taking a walk around the block, which in itself helps to stretch muscles and tendons. Also, don’t stretch to the point of pain, only to the point of tension; or bounce when stretching. Typically hold the stretch for no more than 30 seconds.

At MorningStar at West San Jose, scheduled to open in the summer of 2023, we will offer 69 stylish assisted living suites in a choice of floor plans for residents who need support with the activities of daily living. In addition, our Reflections Neighborhood will have 34 memory care suites devoted to the personalized care of those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  Residents enjoy a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community with resort-style amenities, care services and a range of programs including exercise classes tailored to seniors’ needs.  Visit our website for more information about the newest senior living in San Jose.

Take Steps to Protect Yourself From a Fall

April 17, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Memory Care

Many of us have heard about or know a senior who has had a fall that led to a serious injury. Each year statistics report one out of every five falls causes an injury, such as broken bones or a head injury; and approximately 3 million older adults are treated in emergency departments for a fall injury. Falls resulted in over 36,000 senior deaths in 2020.

The Harvard Medical School reports the highest risk factor for a fall is a previous fall. While a senior may have fallen or tripped and not thought much about it, as they only twisted an ankle or didn’t sustain a serious injury, the event may be a precursor to another fall.

There are things seniors can do to protect themselves from a fall and it starts by being aware of any risk factors you may have including vision and hearing problems, which can make a fall more likely. Experts say stiff joints can hamper your gait and balance and make it easier to fall, as do certain medications for blood pressure and antihistamines. As a deficiency in vitamin D decreases a person’s bone mineral density and strength of the bones, it too can cause instability and raise the risk for a fall. Experts report even something as unrelated as a head cold or the flu can cause dizziness and increase your risk.

To help boost core strength and improve balance, talk to your healthcare provider about the best type of exercises to do. Other steps to decrease the likelihood of a fall are to keep moving to loosen stiff joints and help build strength, wear sensible shoes and remove home hazards. Finally make sure your home has plenty of good lighting.

MorningStar of Idaho Falls offers our unique brand of independent living and assisted living with all the services, amenities, and wellness programs needed to enhance quality of life for our residents. 5 Senior Living Myths You Can Ignore

March 27, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

There’s a lot of information about senior living available online and through word of mouth. Unfortunately, with that information comes misinformation as well.

You may have heard many myths surrounding senior living and its benefits for aging adults. Here are five rumors you should ignore when it comes to senior living and assistance:

1. Only Sick Elderly People Need Senior Living

Many people associate “senior living” with nursing homes and complete dependence on a caregiver. In reality, senior living enriches the lives of millions of seniors across the country each year.

Senior living accommodates all levels of physical and cognitive abilities and independence. You can be in perfect health and still enjoy the social and recreational activities provided in senior living communities.

2. Moving to Senior Living Means Giving Up Independence

Different senior living communities and facilities offer different levels of independence for aging adults. If you want to remain fully independent while still receiving support with daily living, senior living is for you!
It’s understandable to worry about losing your independence as you age. High-quality senior living communities offer annual resident assessments to make sure you get the level of care and independence that you need.

3. Senior Living Is Lonely and Boring

Many residents in senior living communities brag about how full and healthy their social lives are! Senior living is anything but boring.

Most communities host daily or weekly events like game nights, recreational sports, and group fitness classes. You will never run out of activities to enjoy in senior living.

Additionally, senior living communities encourage residents to socialize and form close bonds with others. You are never alone when you’re in senior living.

4. Your Loved Ones Will Forget About You

The aging process can bring about fears of being forgotten and left alone by your family members. Moving to senior living can seem especially scary since you won’t see your family every day.
In senior living, visits from loved ones are always encouraged. There may be set visiting hours, but you will have ample opportunities to spend time with the people you love the most.
If your loved ones can’t make it for a visit, you can still video chat, have a phone call, or text them daily. You won’t be forgotten just because you have moved into senior living.

5. You’ll Have to Follow a Strict Schedule Every Day

Senior living is a broad term that encompasses many different types of communities. However, independent and healthy aging adults can choose their own activities and solo time in almost all communities.
There are no strict schedules in senior living. Everything is tailored to your needs, and you have a say in your care plan.

Forget the Myths: Senior Living Means Thriving!
Senior living can be a wonderful enhancement to your life after retirement. Don’t spend your post-workforce years feeling lonely and bored. By choosing a senior living community, you can reach your full potential and enjoy the best of what the golden years have to offer!

4 Health Benefits of Daily Routines for Seniors

March 24, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

People of any age need a stable, consistent routine to thrive — including seniors. There are numerous health benefits to curating a routine that they participate in and enjoy.

You may not know that many seniors’ mental health is dependent on having consistency and routine in their lives. Here are four key benefits your loved one will enjoy by establishing a daily routine:

1. Reduced Stress

Aging adults may struggle with memory problems, cognitive impairment, and physical health issues. Having a daily routine will reduce their anxiety and stress since they will know what to expect.
Daily routines for seniors can improve a family caregiver’s mental health as well. When your loved one is happy and healthy, it is much easier to feel relaxed yourself.

2. A Sense of Independence

One of the most challenging aspects of aging is dealing with the reduced independence and autonomy that often accompanies it. A daily routine can provide anyone with an improved sense of control, which can be especially beneficial for seniors.

Feeling independent and in control when it comes to daily life is associated with improved mental health. This can be essential for seniors who are already having to become accustomed to changes in health and mobility brought on by aging.

In senior living, such as retirement homes or assisted living, independence is a strong value that the staff promotes with daily routines and residents’ participation in them.

3. Better Hygiene and Personal Care

If your loved one doesn’t have a daily routine, they may find it difficult to maintain their personal hygiene. It is essential for seniors to remain clean and comfortable to avoid skin problems.
Some habits to include in their daily routine include:

  • Brushing their teeth

  • Brushing their hair

  • Showering or bathing

  • Dressing in weather-appropriate clothing

  • Wearing deodorant

  • Applying lotion and face moisturizer

These simple habits can go a long way in making your loved one feel comfortable in their own skin. When they take care of their bodies, with or without assistance, they will feel better overall.

4. Improved Sleep

Sleep is one of the most important parts of your loved one’s daily routine as a senior.
Everyone needs adequate sleep to function properly throughout the day. Sleep helps with memory, critical thinking, and positive moods.

In aging adults, sleep is even more important. Research shows that sleep can have a protective effect against age-related health problems that affect the body and mind.

Implement a bedtime routine and make sure your loved one gets at least eight hours of quality sleep each night.

Improve Your Loved One’s Health with a Daily Routine

A daily routine can provide a wealth of benefits to anyone of any age. For seniors, these benefits can be instrumental in ensuring they enjoy continued health and reduced stress during the golden years.
Help yourself or your loved one thrive by partaking in a consistent daily routine!

Nursing Homes vs. Assisted Living: What’s the Difference?

March 22, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

You may have heard “nursing home” and “assisted living” used interchangeably. These terms mean different things for seniors looking for post-retirement housing.

Assisted living offers unique benefits for residents that nursing homes may not provide. Here’s what you need to know about both.

The Level of Care Your Loved One Needs

The type of senior living your loved one moves to will be highly dependent on the level of assistance they need.
Assisted living is designed to foster seniors’ independence, social lives, and hobbies.

In assisted living, your loved one receives help with daily tasks that are physically taxing. This includes the basics: eating, dressing, personal hygiene, and staying safe.

Nursing homes, on the other hand, provide long-term and in-depth medical care. As the name suggests, many nursing homes are staffed with Registered Nurses who specialize in senior care.

Your loved one may need a nursing home if he or she cannot perform the majority of the required tasks of daily living on their own. Nursing homes provide special cognitive and physical health care benefits.

How Assisted Living Nurtures Aging Adults

Assisted living communities are the perfect places for aging adults who are still highly independent and active. If your loved one enjoys socializing, participating in hobbies, and getting outdoors, assisted living may be right for them.

Strong Social Networks

Social health should never be overlooked when it comes to aging adults. Elderly people with poor social lives are at higher risk of serious mental and physical health problems — as are people of any age.

Assisted living communities foster long-lasting social connections between residents. These communities often host events that bring residents together and offer fun activities.

Assistance with a Few Tasks

If your loved one is in otherwise good health but needs help with some daily tasks, such as bathing and dressing, assisted living is likely the ideal option for them.

The supportive, caring staff members of assisted living communities help residents with personal care and housekeeping. This means your loved one never has to worry about falling in the shower or managing their household chores on their own.

Health and Fitness Programs

Most assisted living communities emphasize physical activity for residents. Daily exercise, even just walking outdoors at a moderate pace, can protect against serious health problems later in life.
Some assisted living communities offer group fitness classes, swimming pools, and personalized wellness plans. Nutrition and physical activity are vital keys to a long, healthy life!

Should You Choose a Nursing Home or Assisted Living?

It all boils down to how much medical and cognitive support your loved one needs. If your loved one requires more extensive care, a nursing home may be the best option for them.

On the other hand, if your loved one enjoys lots of hobbies, sports, and exercise but just needs some extra help, assisted living is the place to go.

How to Talk to Your Parents About a Move to Assisted Living

March 20, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

Your parents are some of the most important people in your life. It can be tough to bring up the subject of assisted living as they age.

However, assisted living benefits aging parents in so many ways. It’s worth having honest conversations to bring your aging parents up to speed about the advantages of assisted living.
Here’s how you can start these difficult conversations and set your parents up for success.

Don’t Shy Away from Their Feelings

Your parents may experience intense emotions of some kind when you bring up assisted living. This is normal and natural.

Try not to avoid your parents’ feelings as you discuss assisted living. They can feel tough emotions while still recognizing that assisted living may be the best option for them.

It’s also a good idea to get in the habit of validating your parents’ feelings.

For example, if they express anger at the idea of moving to assisted living, you can say, “I understand that you feel betrayed by this. We are trying to improve your health and get you the care that you need. It’s okay to feel angry.”

Validating your parents’ emotions can go a long way in building trust and solid communication. These things can make the move to assisted living much easier.

Give Them Choices and Autonomy

You should include your parents in the decision-making process when you're considering assisted living.
For example, you can give them a list of the assisted living communities you feel would work best for them. Have them visit these communities’ websites, Facebook pages, and blogs for more information. You can even schedule in-person or virtual tours!

Ultimately, your parents are the ones who will spend their time in assisted living. Allow them to voice their opinions about each potential community and respect what they say.

Have Multiple Conversations Over Time

If you continue to bring up the subject of assisted living, your parents may warm up to it over time. It’s best to have frequent, shorter conversations about it after you initially present the idea.

Repeated exposure to the idea of moving to assisted living will make the process less scary and sudden for your aging parents. They may even start coming up with ideas for the move themselves!

Discuss assisted living at neutral times during the day, like mealtimes or during personal grooming routines. This will give your parents plenty of time to process, reflect, and discuss everything without feeling rushed or overwhelmed.

Help Your Parents Learn About the Benefits of Assisted Living

It’s never easy to bring up assisted living for the first time with your elderly parents. If you follow these tips, your conversations will be easier and much more respectful.
Assisted living has a wealth of benefits for seniors and their families. Help your parents learn about the advantages by having these difficult conversations.

Avoid These Common Mistakes When Searching for a Retirement Home

March 17, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Retirement Home

Choosing a retirement home is a serious decision for senior adults and their family members. Whether you are looking at retirement homes for yourself or helping a loved one by finding one for them, the following are some common mistakes you will want to avoid:

Deciding Too Soon

A common mistake that many people make when looking at retirement homes is choosing the first one that they see. While the first facility you tour may be great and have everything you are looking for, it is important to consider all of your options.

Taking a look at several different homes can give you a more well-rounded idea of what you or your loved one requires. You may also find that the first home you toured actually wasn’t ideal when you find a better choice later in your search.

Not Considering Medical Needs

One of the biggest mistakes that can be made when searching for a retirement home is not considering your or your loved one’s medical needs. Many senior adults have unique health concerns and require medical care.

If this is the case for you, it is important to find a facility that has either on-site nursing staff or easy access to nearby medical facilities. This ensures that your or your senior family member’s medical needs can be properly met.

Looking Too Far from Home

If you plan on receiving visitors often — or if you plan on visiting your loved one in their new retirement home — you must consider location. It is not uncommon for people to find a great senior living facility that is hours away from friends and family.

While you may think the distance will not be a problem, visits can become difficult over time if the retirement home is too far. Senior adults often struggle with feelings of loneliness, making visits with friends and family essential for their well-being. This is why it is important to consider the distance when searching for retirement homes.

Ignoring Reviews and Testimonials

When searching for a retirement home, it is always a good idea to look at other residents’ experiences. A common mistake that some people make is ignoring negative reviews and testimonials because they like other things about a facility.

Regardless of what that facility has to offer, you should take testimonials from other residents or their family members seriously and inquire with the staff about these concerns.

Finding the Right Retirement Home
When looking at retirement homes for yourself or a loved one, you will want to avoid these common mistakes that could lead to a poor choice. If you are searching for the best senior living facility, make sure to consider any medical concerns, keep location in mind, and review testimonials from other residents.
And perhaps most importantly, when it comes to any significant choice, it’s best not to make a decision too soon.

4 Steps to Take Before Moving a Loved One into Senior Living

March 15, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

Making the transition into senior living can be a delicate time for many older adults. When you are helping a senior family member or other loved one move into senior living, there are certain steps you should take to make the transition easier. Take a look at the four steps below:

1. Assess Their Physical Needs

Before moving your loved one into senior living, the first step is assessing their needs. Every person is unique and requires different types of assistance as they age. Some older adults can live independently with little to no daily assistance. These seniors are best suited for independent living communities.

Older adults with limited mobility, grave health concerns, or cognitive issues often require ongoing assistance with tasks like bathing, feeding, and more. These seniors benefit most from assisted living facilities with staff on-site around the clock to help.

2. Consider Medical Requirements

When assessing your loved one’s needs, it is important to consider any medical requirements they may have. Many seniors have serious health concerns that require ongoing, everyday medical care. These seniors may need skilled nursing assistance, memory care, or physical therapy.

Before moving them into any kind of senior living facility, ensure they can access the necessary medical services.

3. Look into Financial Options

Senior living can be a costly expense for many families. When helping a loved one transition into a senior living facility, you will need to take a thorough look at both their finances and those of anyone helping with payment. Make sure you choose an independent or assisted living facility your family can afford.

If you require financial assistance, there are many resources out there that can help with the costs of senior care. Make sure to look into these financial options so you can use every resource available to your family.

4. Help Prepare Their Belongings

A common concern for older adults transitioning into senior living is the ability to take their belongings. Depending on the type of community they are moving into, they may not be able to take everything from their home. This is especially true for seniors moving into assisted living.

You will want to help your loved one take inventory of their belongings and determine their most cherished and important items. You may also want to look into storage facilities that can hold onto any additional belongings they cannot keep with them but do not want to part with.

Transitioning into Senior Living

From assessing medical and physical needs to preparing their belongings, there are several important steps to take before moving a loved one into senior living. Taking these steps can help your senior family member get off to the best start when transitioning into assisted or independent living.

What to Do When Senior Parents Refuse to Consider Assisted Living

March 13, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

If you’re looking for advice concerning assisted living, chances are you recently had a tough conversation about moving your parents out of their home and into a community. Naturally, they might feel overwhelmed and defensive about potentially moving to assisted living.

Here’s what you can do to calm them down and help them see the advantages that assisted living communities offer.

Recognize Why They Don’t Want to Go

It’s understandable for elderly parents to refuse assisted living at first. After all, no one likes to be reminded that they’re getting older and are in worse health than they used to be.

Empathy and understanding can go a long way during these transitions. Recognize that your parents aren't trying to be difficult — they’re simply struggling with the reality of aging.

Imagine how you would feel if you had to give up your current home to move into an assisted living community. The experience would be difficult no matter how amazing your new community may be.
Acknowledge your loved ones’ worries and try to put yourself in their shoes as you navigate this sensitive subject.

Continue to Highlight the Positives

Assisted living communities can be the best possible place for many older people to improve their quality of life. As such, it’s best to emphasize the positives when discussing the potential move.

For example, instead of focusing on your parents’ health problems and limitations, reframe the conversation to highlight all the things they can do in assisted living: receive direct assistance, enjoy various amenities, make new friends, and much more.

Avoid Pressuring or Shaming Your Parents

It’s easy to get frustrated when your senior parents resist the idea of entering assisted living. However, voicing your aggravation can often do more harm than good.

Try not to make your parents feel pressured or rushed as they make their decision. They won’t respond well if they feel they’re being forced to do something they don’t want to do.

Never bring up your loved ones’ medical problems in an attempt to persuade them to move. Rather than changing their minds, it will likely just make them feel ashamed and may even cause them to oppose the idea more adamantly.

Give Them Plenty of Control

You might think that the purpose of assisted living is to look after your senior parents as though they were completely helpless, but this isn’t true. Assisted living facilities are designed to help seniors retain their autonomy while getting the help they need.

You should do the same as you prepare them to enter assisted living. Let them make choices and have some say over how things are done. Aside from non-negotiable arrangements and safety concerns, your parents should be able to make most of their own decisions during every part of the process.

Help Your Parents with a Move to Assisted Living

Your parents deserve the highest quality care available, and assisted living can give it to them. With time, patience, and grace, they may even come to view the transition as a good thing.
