Seniors Need to be Alert to Scammers

The Federal Trade Commission reported in 2023, adults in the U.S. lost a record $10 billion to fraud. They want us to remember scammers are skilled and persuasive, and use tactics designed to catch us off guard. 

A common scam is to phone older adults and pretend to be from organizations like the IRS, Social Security Administration or Medicare. During the call, they ask for personal information, and if the person is reluctant to give it, they threaten to cut off benefits. Once they have your information, they use it to commit identity theft.

Be wary of calls from someone who claims you have won a lottery or prize and the only hitch is you need to send money or gift cards to cover taxes and processing fees. Also don’t be taken in by a popular scam claiming your computer is compromised and you need to pay them to fix it. Especially targeted at seniors is a caller pretending to be a grandchild or relative (or their friend) pleading for money to be wired to get out of jail or other types of trouble.   

To protect yourself, change your passwords often and make sure they are complicated. Use two-step verifications when you have the option. Be careful of giving out any information over the phone, in emails or through texts. Avoid transferring money or purchasing gift cards over the phone. Experts say once you complete such a transaction, the money is typically unrecoverable. Finally if you are targeted by a scam, notify your local police department or reach out to the National Elder Fraud Hotline.

Improve Your Health by Making Sleep a Priority

The American Heart Association offers a checklist of eight key measures for improving and maintaining cardiovascular health. Life’s Essential 8 is designed to highlight things we can do to lower our risk for heart disease, stroke and other major health problems. 

In 2022, the Association added sleep duration to the list as a component of heart health. They say the amount and quality of sleep can influence a person’s eating habits, mood, memory, internal organs and more. 

One advantage to getting enough sleep is being more productive. After spending years working long hours to the detriment of a good night’s sleep, Ariana Huffington now says, “The irony is that a lot of people forego sleep in the name of productivity. But in fact our productivity is reduced substantially when we’re sleep deprived.” 

Professor of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School, Charles Czeisler, explains being sleep deprived can impair your abilities and is like being drunk. Poor sleep habits can cause you to eat more to feel more energetic, and may increase your risk for high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke. 

It is recommended adults get a solid 7 to 9 hours of sleep each day and a sleep routine will help you achieve this goal. Start by going to bed each night around the same time so you can wake up refreshed at the same time each morning. If possible, open your curtains to let in the morning sunshine or turn on the bedroom lights. Research still shows breakfast is the most important meal of the day and should consist of healthy foods. 

Another thing to get your day off right is to take a few minutes each morning doing something like practicing mindfulness or yoga. The other Life’s Essential 8 include maintaining a healthy diet, fitness, quitting nicotine, losing weight, and watching your cholesterol, blood pressure and risk for diabetes.

As We Age, Our Thinking Process Begins to Slow Down

Many of us find ourselves wondering if our brain is working as efficiently as it did when we were younger. Research shows most likely it is not. Various studies suggest memory problems often “reflect a slower processing speed and poor encoding and retrieval of new memories as a result of diminished attention.” However, while normal aging causes seniors to process new information slower; judgement and reasoning powers remain largely intact. 

Researchers say in the same way we cannot jump as high or run as fast as we did when we were children; our thinking process also begins to slow down. By the time we are in our 50s or 60s, this can interfere with remembering things, solving problems or learning new information. Structural changes in the brain regions involved in memory processing such as the hippocampus and the frontal lobes all experience anatomical and neurochemical changes as we age. Concentration can be affected by the natural loss of receptors and neurons. Outside factors such as not getting enough sleep or a hearing loss can exacerbate the problem, and daily aches and pains can impact our ability to concentrate as do the medications we take to ease the pain.

If an older person does not make a point to really concentrate when taking in new information, it can cause problems with recall as they never really learned it in the first place. Experts offer practical, commonsense tips to help you more reliably process information and improve your ability to focus. Examples include playing brain games, physical exercise (it helps send more blood flow to the brain), getting out in nature, listening to music, sleeping at least seven to eight hours a night or using relaxation techniques such as meditation or mindfulness.

Traditional Medicare Does Not Cover Everything

Many seniors new to Medicare have questions about the scope of coverage under the program. Experts explain traditional Medicare covers most health care needs including hospital care, doctor visits and lab tests. However, some services and medical devices are not covered.

While Medicare covers treatment and doctor visits regarding medical problems in the ears; many seniors are surprised to learn it does not cover hearing aids. In 2017 a bill was passed that allows hearing aids to be sold over-the-counter without a prescription for people with mild to moderate hearing loss; greatly reducing the cost.

Eye exams, glasses and contact lenses are also not covered under traditional Medicare. Medicare does cover things like cataract surgery and other medical conditions of the eye. If you are concerned about the cost of glasses and exams, vision insurance is available. The same goes for most dental care, and there are additional plans out there to help cover the cost of dental work. 

If you travel out of the country, you need to know Medicare will not cover any of your medical care. Travelers may purchase a Medigap policy that covers certain overseas medical costs; or check into travel insurance policies offering basic health care. Some seniors opt to pay upfront for emergency medical evacuation insurance. 

Other types of services not covered by Medicare are podiatry, massage therapy and chiropractic care. While short-term rehabilitation services are covered, Medicare does not cover long-term care in a nursing home.

Lifestyle Habits Help Delay the Onset of Diabetes

Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes affects millions of Americans, and every year more than a million people are diagnosed with the disease. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) reports in 2021, 38.4 million Americans, or 11.6% of the population, had diabetes. Of that number 2 million had type 1 diabetes, which includes more than 300,000 children and adolescents. 

Seniors aged 65 years and older make up a large percentage of Americans with the disease at 29.2% or 16.5 million seniors (diagnosed and undiagnosed). Diabetes can be deadly and was the 8th leading cause of death in 2021. People with diabetes are at an increased risk of vision problems, heart attacks, nerve damage and stroke. In 2022, the CDC estimated the cost of diabetes was $412.9 billion. 

Prediabetes is another huge problem and numbers from 2021, report 97.6 million Americans age 18 and older are affected. It is a chronic condition in which blood glucose levels are higher than normal but not high enough to be classified as diabetes. While it carries an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, it isn’t inevitable. Studies show prediabetes can be reversed or the risk mitigated with lifestyle changes such as diet, medications, and early detection. 

Yale Medicine endocrinologist, Anika Anam, MD, explains, “Prediabetes goes hand in hand with metabolic syndrome, the term for a condition that includes hypertension, obesity, and high cholesterol.” She adds each of those conditions raises the risk for serious issues including heart disease, stroke, and cancer. 

The CDC’s national Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP), finds “people with prediabetes who lost a modest amount of weight—5 to 7% (10 to 14 pounds for a person weighing 200 pounds, for example)—with the help of a structured lifestyle-change program cut their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 58%.” In addition, experts say at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise per day can not only improve insulin sensitivity and lower blood sugar levels, but aid in weight loss. Cutting out added sugars, eating more complex carbs (vegetables, legumes, nuts, and whole grains), and increasing protein are other recommended lifestyle changes as is reducing stress.

An Important Conversation Many Families Aren’t Having

Medical professionals and counselors who deal with families facing end-of-life issues offer a few suggestions to the rest of us on “how to start a conversation” when we have a very sick loved one. They say the first thing to consider is having the conversation in one’s kitchen is a whole lot easier than having it in the hospital. It may also encourage your family to start the conversation if they learn that studies find families who have talked about it beforehand express less feelings of guilt after the person passes away. Moreover they say they had an easier time grieving and were less likely to experience depression. 

These types of questions to ask to get a conversation started include “what does the person value most about their life?” Another topic of discussion should be to find out what the person understands about their illness? Ask: what matters most to them at the end of life, what outcomes are unacceptable; what are the person’s fears and physical needs? 

As a family member, you need to remember to practice active listening. It is important to leave your own view out of the discussion and try to understand what the person is feeling. Find out if they want to spend their last days at home; and whom do they wish to be surrounded by as they face death. This is also a good time to encourage them to express their wishes regarding burial. 

Ask if the person has an advance directive, which is basically a legally binding document that gives instructions for your healthcare in the event that you are no longer able to make or communicate those decisions yourself.
