6 HOBBIES FOR SENIORS

May 10, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

How do you stay busy at a retirement community in Idaho Falls? You can participate in activities, as well as interact socially with other residents.

One of the most effective ways to stay busy is to take up a hobby. Research indicates older adults who enjoy a hobby tend to boost their mental health, as well as resist the onset of medical conditions that affect seniors such as arthritis and osteoporosis.

Let’s review six hobbies for seniors that you can enjoy at our senior living center in Idaho Fall.

Sports

Participating in organized sports is a great way to develop camaraderie with other residents, as well as improve your physical skill set. Team sports offer the opportunity for you to combat the health risks associated with common conditions such as obesity and heart disease. Some of the most popular sports for older adults include golf, squash, and swimming.

Fitness Activities

Maybe organized sports is not your thing, but that does not mean you have to live a sedentary lifestyle. You can participate in physical fitness activities that vary in workout intensity. One of the most popular types of physical activities enjoyed by the residents of our assisted living facility is yoga, which also is a great way to enhance your mental health. Other fitness activities to consider include cycling and hiking.

Gardening

There is not a more relaxing hobby for seniors than gardening. You also gain an incredible sense of accomplishment by nurturing seeds into transforming into tall plants. Gardening gives you the flexibility to grow a wide variety of plants and flowers to match your personal preferences in both design and functionality. This hobby is known for reducing stress levels in people of all ages, as well as helping you remain physically fit. Above all, you increase your self-sufficiency by growing nutritious food.

Cooking

Cooking a meal from scratch by using fresh ingredients generates a high level of accomplishment. It also represents a great way to get together with friends and family members. Although cooking is effective at ensuring you follow a healthy diet, it also can enhance your mental health both cognitively and emotionally. You can learn cooking skills on your own by reading recipes or by taking a few cooking classes held at a retirement community in Idaho Falls.

Get Musical

You do not have to read a study that extolls the mental health benefits of listening to music. However, you might be surprised at the mental health benefits enjoyed by seniors who take up the hobby of learning how to play a musical instrument. It does not matter whether you attack a drum set or tap the keys on a piano, learning how to play a musical instrument is an effective way to prevent the decline of cognitive skills.

Birdwatching

Nothing is as soothing as closing your eyes and listening to birds sing their morning songs. That is, if you do not include the sense of vision in the morning routine. Birdwatching is a great way to enjoy the great outdoors, while not having to travel far from our assisted living facility in Idaho Falls. You can watch birds with your eyes or enhance the experience by accessing a pair of binoculars. In addition, you can soak up a little beneficial vitamin D in the process. The mission “to honor, to value, to invest” remains the core value at our assisted living facility in Idaho Falls. Discover what we have to offer in Idaho Falls by scheduling a tour today of our senior living center.

Taking Medications Safely as You Age

April 24, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

It may surprise you to know according to the Department of Health and Human Services, fifty-five percent of seniors are non-compliant with prescription drug orders and do not take medication as prescribed by their doctors. It is a serious problem as approximately 200,000 older adults are hospitalized annually due to adverse drug reactions.

Medical professionals say there are steps seniors and those who care for an elderly loved one can do to help lessen the problem. To start with, take medications as prescribed including the correct dosage and time, with or without food, and never crush a pill into a powder. Especially if you see multiple doctors, be sure to always bring a list and dosage of all medications you are taking including non-prescription and herbal supplements.

Experts say using the same pharmacy can help reduce drug interactions, and to be sure to read the warnings regarding adverse reactions. Periodically review your prescriptions with your doctors to make sure you are taking the right dosage and still need the medications. To see if any meds you take have a warning for usage in the elderly, check the American Geriatric Society’s Beers Criteria for Potentially Inappropriate Medication Use in Older Adults. It is also recommended you properly dispose of older medications and drugs you no longer take.

If you are on medications to treat diabetes or high blood pressure, you need to continue to test your glucose level and BP numbers. Other drugs may be prescribed with the understanding you will have your blood tested periodically and it is important to follow through as too high or too low of a dosage can cause problems.

WHAT ARE THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF CYCLING?

April 22, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

At our senior living center in Idaho Falls, residents have many recreation options to help keep their bodies strong and minds alert. One of the most popular recreational activities is cycling, which a growing number of our residents have made a part of their daily routines. Some residents cycle by themselves or in small groups, while other residents join clubs in which large groups of cyclists hit the roads and paths surrounding our retirement community in Idaho Falls.

Cycling is a healthy lifestyle option for many reasons. Let’s review the health benefits of cycling.

Low Impact Exercise

Seniors benefit the most from performing low-impact exercises because the exercises are easier for the body to take, especially for the residents of our assisted living facility in Idaho Falls who suffer from some form of arthritis. Cycling is the ultimate low-impact exercise, as it goes easy on the joints and alleviates joint stiffness.

Reduces Body Weight

One of the primary goals of any type of exercise is to burn calories, which in turn can help you lower body weight. Cycling is one of the most effective exercises for lowering body weight because it burns calories at a rapid rate. Combined with strength training, cycling also can increase your muscle mass and metabolism rate.

Improves Balance

One of the many facts of life associated with the aging process is losing balance and coordination. Even stepping out of a bathtub can challenge the balance and coordination of a resident at our retirement community in Idaho Falls. Cycling enhances balance and coordination because of the need to keep a bike upright at all times.

Boosts Cardiovascular System

With your legs constantly in motion, cycling represents the ideal exercise for boosting the performance of the cardiovascular system. The results of a 2019 medical study demonstrated the connection between cycling and heart health. An improved heart rate and function contribute to preventing diabetes and high blood pressure. Cycling also is linked to lowering cholesterol levels.

Leg Power

Cycling strengthens leg muscles, without placing too much stress on bones and joints. The constant motion of your legs targets the glutes, quads, calves, and hamstrings. To bolster the strength of your legs even more, incorporate weightlifting exercises such as squats into your exercise routine. Maintaining leg strength as you grow older prevents the development of medical conditions such as arthritis and osteoporosis.

Good for the Brain

Although exercising is good for the brain, certain exercises such as cycling are much more effective at boosting mental health. Focusing on the path in front of you, as well as the cadence at which you move your legs, helps you develop awareness and concentration. Cycling also is a great stress reliever and one of the best ways to improve cognitive function.

Make Cycling a Part of Your Exercise Routine

Cycling is linked to preventing the development of other diseases outside of arthritis and osteoporosis. Additional research needs to be conducted to determine whether cycling prevents some types of cancers. Until researchers discover additional health benefits, starting a cycling routine helps you stay in both mental and physical shape. Find out more about cycling and the other physical activity options available to the residents of our senior living center in Idaho Falls by scheduling a tour today.

6 TIPS FOR MANAGING ARTHRITIS

April 19, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

It is a medical condition that often develops as a natural part of the aging process. More than 40 million Americans live with some form of arthritis, which is an inflammatory medical condition that negatively impacts the bones and joints. Pain, swelling, and stiffness that develop can dramatically diminish the quality of your life. At our retirement community in Idaho Falls, our team of caregivers helps residents manage the symptoms of arthritis.

If you live with an arthritic condition, read about the following six tips to manage the disease for achieving a higher quality of life.

Achieve a Healthy Weight

Carrying excess weight places too much stress on the parts of the body where you suffer from painful arthritis symptoms. Losing weight alleviates the pressure placed on the vulnerable parts of your body, which in turn helps decrease the amount of pain that you feel. The most effective ways to lose weight include following the right diet and exercising on a regular basis.

Follow an Anti-Inflammatory Diet

Several food sources can lower the pain caused by inflammation of the bones and joints. Food sources such as nuts, beans, fish, fruits, and vegetables contain the enzymes that help reduce inflammation. At our senior living center in Idaho Falls, we incorporate these food sources into the daily menus created for residents.

Exercise Regularly

Low-impact exercises that you perform regularly keep the joints working to prevent stiffness and swelling. You should follow a regular exercise routine that does not overwork bones and joints, such as walking, swimming, and cycling. Stretching before each workout ensures your joints move through the full range of motion.

Use Assistive Devices

Living with arthritis does not mean you have to live a sedentary lifestyle. Using an assistive device like a cane or walker makes it much easier to walk, without increasing the amount of pain that you feel. Even a shoe insert can alleviate the pain felt in both feet and ankles. You should never feel embarrassed because an assistive device improves the quality of your life.

Take Breaks

Although staying active represents an effective strategy for managing arthritis symptoms, make sure you pay attention to how your body responds to a more active lifestyle. Take a break whenever your body feels like it needs rest to rejuvenate before the next activity. After a low-impact workout, rest for around 20 minutes while applying a heating pad over the areas of the body where you feel pain.

Make the Right Lifestyle Choices

Two lifestyle choices lead to an increase in arthritis pain: Smoking and drinking alcohol. Smoking cigarettes releases toxins in the body that exacerbate arthritis pain. This lifestyle choice also increases the risk of complications if you need surgery to address pain. Drinking alcohol compromises the immune system, which can trigger higher levels of arthritic pain.

Follow Tips That Work for You

At our retirement community in Idaho Falls, our caregivers understand that residents have unique healthcare needs to manage a disease such as arthritis. This is why we encourage residents to be patient when searching for the right tips to manage arthritis pain. The mission “to honor, to value, to invest” makes our assisted living facility in Idaho Falls the premier place for seniors to call home. Numbers That Provide a View of Heart Health

April 19, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

Julie Corliss, Executive Editor, Harvard Heart Letter published an article on the five important numbers which provide an overall view of hearth health and what the target numbers should be. While these are specific recommendations, Ms. Corliss also says the ideal values are good goals for most people but your doctor may suggest different numbers based on your age and other health conditions.

Current recommended blood pressure numbers are less than 120/80 mm Hg. Systolic blood pressure is the first number and diastolic blood pressure the second number, and together they measure how hard your heart is working and the condition of your blood vessels. High blood pressure (HBP) can damage blood vessels and increase a person’s risk for a stroke or heart attack.

Your LDL cholesterol numbers should be less than 70 mg/dL and your triglycerides less than 150 mg/dL. A cholesterol test is done through a blood draw after a person has fasted and if both your numbers are high, it increases your risk for a heart attack or stroke. Another important number is your blood sugar levels, which is how diabetes is typically diagnosed. Doctors say blood sugar levels should be less than 100 mg/dL.

Finally, the last number you should pay attention to for better health is your waistline measurement. Experts say the circumference should be either lower than: less than half your height in inches; or for women less than 35 inches, and for men less than 40 inches. The problem with big numbers is what doctors call “abdominal or visceral obesity” typically an indication of fat surrounding the internal organs. Use a tape measure placed just above your navel (belly button) to get your number.

Ms. Corliss goes on to give universal advice to improve all the measures of heart health.  She states “Eating a healthy, plant-based diet can help. Regular exercise also helps; aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise like brisk walking most days. Other lifestyle habits that can lower your heart disease risk include getting seven to eight hours of sleep nightly and managing your stress level.”

Keep reading to find out how to create a relaxing and comfortable home in assisted living.

Personalize Your Living Space

Assisted living communities that offer unfurnished living spaces are great for easily making a senior living apartment feel more like home. While there may have less space, seniors can still bring some of the furniture and precious belongings that will make their new senior living apartment in Portland feel familiar. Showcasing beloved family memories and knickknacks is a great way to personalize senior living apartments.

Create a Calming Environment

Calm tranquility is one thing all seniors search for in retirement. When decorating your new assisted living space, think about what things are most calming to you. Scents, colors, plants, pets, and design elements are just some of the few things to consider when you begin planning a move to senior living. There’s a lot of space to be creative when designing your assisted living apartment at MorningStar Assisted Living Portland.

Be Part of Your Community

Unless you are moving with a close friend or partner, you may not know anyone in your new senior living community. This can create anxiety and uncertainty about leaving your apartment. While we want you to feel comfortable in your space, enjoying the rest of the community will also help you to feel at home. Attending planned events and activities is an easy first step to getting out of your room and exploring your new community. Making friends is easy when you’re surrounded by people who like the same things you do!

A Healthy Diet Reduces the Risk of Cognitive Decline

April 15, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

Researchers have found evidence suggesting genetics, environment, and lifestyle can affect our risk of developing Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. A poor diet is one of those lifestyle choices that causes high blood pressure and heart disease, and increases a person’s risk for Alzheimer’s disease.

WebMD.com reports the MIND diet; a combination of the Mediterranean and DASH diets has shown promise in reducing the risk or slowing cognitive decline. They cite a study showing MIND lowered the risk of Alzheimer’s by 53% in those who follow it closely and by 35% in those who follow more loosely. They continue to say “studies show that eating certain foods and avoiding unhealthy ones can slow brain aging by 7.5 years.”

To adhere to the diet, weekly meals should include food from the following groups: green leafy vegetables, other vegetables, nuts, berries, beans, whole grains, fish, poultry, olive oil, and wine. They say a good way to start is with a daily salad, one other vegetable, and three servings of whole grains every day. In terms of vegetables, collard greens, kale, and spinach have been found to be especially healthy.

Poultry should be eaten once a week, fish twice a week and beans every other day. Nuts and berries make good snacks, blueberries and strawberries being some of the best. Olive oil not only adds a great taste to foods but has been shown to improve brain function over the long term and protect against dementia.

At MorningStar at West San Jose, we offer assisted living residents a healthy, vibrant lifestyle with stylish suites, luxury amenities, wellness programs and activities. In addition, our five-star dining experience features seasonal menus with the freshest ingredients from high quality producers, locally sourced whenever possible.

How Prices are Structured at MorningStar at West San Jose

April 12, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

At MorningStar at West San Jose, we regularly have questions about our community from area seniors and their family members.  FAQs include how our pricing is structured as well as availability.  In assisted living, fees are based on the level of care a resident requires.  For memory care residents, we offer all-inclusive pricing, which means suite rental and care, whatever the level of need, is one price.

To calculate your level of need in assisted living, you and your family will meet with our Wellness Director and go over your medical history and personal preferences to create an individualized care plan.  This sets the basis of your Care Level (we have five) and your monthly fee accounts for the costs and time to provide the needed services.  These can include help with daily personal care activities (grooming, bathing, toileting, etc.) and medical assistance.

If you are concerned the cost of assisted living may be too high for your means, we want to remind you that senior housing can be very cost-effective as there are many things you will no longer pay for out-of-pocket.  This includes the costs of your monthly utilities.  At MorningStar your monthly fee includes cable TV & utilities, housekeeping, and three daily meals prepared under the direction of our Executive Chef.  In addition, we have scheduled transportation every week for rides to medical appointments as well as transportation to organized activities and cultural events.

Assisted living residents also have access to a full-time licensed nurse and our 24-hour care staff.  Our wellness programs and activities engage and support our residents’ mental, physical, spiritual and social needs for a healthier, fuller life.

Top Safety Devices and Technology for Senior Wellness

April 03, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

In many ways, technology has made our lives much easier and more accessible. But can technology improve the lives of seniors?

A senior’s independence hinges greatly on their ability to easily navigate their homes and community. Luckily, there have been life-changing advancements in technology that allow seniors to feel more comfortable getting around and completing tasks throughout the day. Whether you are looking for assisted living in Portland, or looking to make a senior’s life easier at home, these following safety devices are sure to help seniors feel more comfortable while ensuring their health and wellness.

Smart Watches and Senior Health

Smart watches are a simple yet effective way for seniors to set up reminders, track their location, and enhance their safety. Certain watches include emergency SOS callouts and even have fall detection features. Not only this, but some smart watches can monitor heart rate, too. Depending on how you configure these watches, data can be sent out to a caretaker or family member so that they can keep track of their loved one, ensuring their safety and health.

Video Doorbells and Home Camera Systems

Many seniors agree that added security in and around their homes makes them feel safe and more at ease while living alone. Seniors can often be the target of petty crimes, and a decrease in mobility can make it difficult for seniors to combat these concerns themselves. Doorbells with a recording security system can deter criminals or unwanted individuals from intruding on a senior’s property. Camera systems throughout the home can also be a good way for family members to check in on their loved ones if necessary. It’s important to not use this technology to impede your loved one’s independence and privacy!

Making Assisted Living Visits More Meaningful

April 03, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

Especially on birthdays and holidays, many of us wish to brighten the day for a loved one in an assisted living community by letting them know they are very special to us.  To help make our visit more meaningful, experts provide some tips to keep in mind when we visit.

You may want to plan in advance an activity your loved one would enjoy doing with you during your visit.  Examples include bringing along a puzzle to work on, a Scrabble board or a trivia game.  You could get prints of current photos of the family made to add to an album or start a new one.  If they are a music lover, bring some new music to enjoy together.  If they enjoy listening to stories, get an audiobook to listen to or buy a favorite family movie to watch together.  If they like sending greeting cards to family and friends, buy a box of cards and help get them ready to mail.   If they get pleasure from being pampered, bring along the supplies to give them a manicure.

If the weather is cooperative, take advantage of the community’s outdoor area to soak up the sun or take your loved one to a local park and plan to share a simple meal of sandwiches and a drink.  Bringing your kids along automatically provides a more cheerful energy and will give the resident pleasant memories long after the little ones have gone home.   However, do keep in mind that too many visitors at a time can be hectic and it may be better to spread out the visits.

If you do want to bring gifts, remember the person most likely does not have a lot of extra room for anything too big.  Gifts of food are generally welcomed and can be shared with others in the community.  Other tips include not visiting when you are ill, and be sure to wash your hands when you first come in to avoid spreading germs.

At MorningStar Assisted Living & Memory Care at West San Jose, we provide lots of activities and programs for our residents, but we know they always look forward to seeing their family.  Our community has beautiful and inviting common areas to enjoy with visiting family and friends.  For assisted living in San Jose, we encourage you to consider MorningStar, the perfect community to age in place comfortably and safely.

MorningStar’s foundation is based on the mission to honor God, value seniors and invest in our staff to create a unique senior living experience.  Set in a warm, loving atmosphere with beautiful surroundings and resort-style amenities, we provide exceptional assisted living and memory care.  Please contact us to discover why MorningStar at West San Jose is a great place to call home.

Respite Care Options for Caregivers

April 01, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

Being the primary caregiver to a senior parent or loved one struggling with mobility impairment or memory loss is a selfless, and sometimes necessary, act of love. It is a huge responsibility to ensure your loved one is happy, healthy, and safe everyday. However, if you have other things going on in your life that cannot be put on paused, caring for an elderly loved one with assisted living needs can wear you down emotionally, physically, and mentally.

Many senior living communities offer respite care for caregivers needing a break. These short-term stays allow caregivers to tend to whatever business they need while ensuring their loved one is still properly cared for.

What is Respite Care?

Respite care is a short-term stay of 30 days or less in a fully staffed and furnished senior living community. This care service is designed to provide temporary relief or rest for primary caregivers who are caring for seniors with intensive needs or other age-related conditions. Respite care for seniors offers the same amenities and services as long-term residents.

There are various respite care benefits for families, including:

  • Affordability: Affordable respite care solutions for seniors is an important part of senior care options. Many families will avoid taking time off, scheduling surgeries, or tending to ever changing needs of life because of the belief that senior care is unaffordable. Senior living communities are equipped with the knowledge to offer your loved one with the best short term assisted living care with personalized pricing options.

  • Proper Care Management: You may feel uneasy inviting someone you don’t know into your home to care for your loved one. How can you be sure that you can trust them and their skills? Senior living communities offering respite care are committed to providing assistance with daily living. Testimonials and reviews can speak to a senior living’s accomplishments and trustworthiness so that you can feel relaxed and confident in your respite care choice.

How to Age with Independence

April 01, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

One of the greatest fears seniors have is the possibility of losing their independence with age. While it is true that seniors can experience heightened health concerns and may appear more fragile, they have every intention to care for themselves as they had before retirement. The mention of assisted living to a senior may immediately trigger their fear of lack of independence, but not all assisted living is the same.

Whether you’re a senior looking to maintain your independence or a family member wanting to know more about senior autonomy, MorningStar Retirement Homes Portland offers great advice on how seniors can maintain their independence in assisted living.

Considering Assisted Living for a Loved One in San Jose?

March 30, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

MorningStar at West San Jose wants to reassure families considering assisted living that if their loved one moves into our home, we will see to it they receive the care they need.  Before the resident even moves in, our Wellness Director will meet with the family to thoroughly discuss the person’s medical history, current health condition, medications, and personal preferences.  In addition, we regularly review, evaluate, and update care plans to ensure changing needs are addressed.

As a family member, some of your concerns may be focused on your parent or loved one’s medications especially if they have had problems taking them on time, all the time, or incorrectly.  If you want to know if we offer medication management, the answer is yes, and we also offer pharmacy services.  We consider medication management to be an important service to our residents as we know many seniors with chronic health conditions take several prescription medications daily, which can result in missed or improper dosages.

Your initial meeting with our Wellness Director is also a good time to discuss concerns such as a parent who has been losing weight recently and who may not be eating properly.  Or you may worry they are not drinking enough fluids each day.  We have an answer to both problems as our five-star meal service is designed to be both nutritional as well as to temp the appetite of our most discerning residents.  To help keep our residents hydrated, we make sure they have plenty of opportunities to drink throughout the day.

Along with our compassionate care services and luxury amenities, residents have a choice of well-designed floorplans that are sure to meet a variety of preferences and needs.  You will find our suites have high ceilings, kitchenettes, handicapped-accessible bathrooms, emergency call systems and private heating & air conditioning.  All that is missing to make it feel like home are your own furnishings and personal items.  Also, you will not need to leave behind a beloved family member as we are pet friendly.  For more information about the finest senior housing in San Jose, we encourage you to contact us for more information about our beautiful community.

Ideas for Tasty and Healthy Snacks

March 28, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

The goal of a snack should be to satisfy your hunger as well as be a balanced addition to your daily nutritional intake. Dietician Lisa Jones says satisfying snacks can be crunchy, creamy, savory or salty and good choices include things like eggs, tofu, whole grains and fruits and vegetables.

As a guideline, an adult’s snack should contain approximately 150 to 250 calories. Experts advise diabetics to stick to protein-rich choices and to watch the amount of carbohydrates a food contains as carbs can elevate blood sugar. If you are eating pre-packaged food, check to see what constitutes a serving and the number of calories.

Remember healthy snacks can be tasty such as avocado on whole grain toast. For a fiber-rich snack, how about making chia pudding? The recipe is simple and all you need to do is add 3 tablespoons of chia seeds to a 6 oz. glass of seed-based milk. Add ½ cup fruit and refrigerate for a couple of hours. To get 80% of the daily folate and 50% of the manganese requirement, how about eating a cup of shelled edamame?

Other quick snacks include a handful of nuts and a piece of fruit, or a bowl of popcorn topped with a small amount of olive oil rather than butter. Cut-up veggies eaten plain or dipped in peanut butter or humus is another satisfying, healthy snack. Greek yogurt is loaded with calcium, probiotics and protein and can be added to fruit, a handful of nuts or even to tuna.

Religious and Spiritual Assisted Living in Colorado

March 27, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

One of the most difficult aspects of transitioning into assisted living is the fear of losing close connections with longtime friends in their religious community. Religion and spirituality provide us with meaning and purpose and offer many opportunities to volunteer and get involved in our neighborhoods. In retirement, seniors often gravitate to religious spheres because of the ability to easily make friends while receiving hope and healing.

Assisted living homes with religious or spiritual support provide seniors with the same sense of belonging. Joining a senior living community of open and like-minded peers who share similar values will help seniors settle into their new assisted living home. Religious and spiritual senior living can provide seniors with these various benefits that promote overall holistic well-being:

Spiritual and Faith-Based Activities in Assisted Living

Religious assisted living homes with spiritual support provide seniors with opportunities to volunteer and get involved in their community. Much in the same way they may have done before transitioning to assisted living, seniors are able to participate with their religiously affiliated group to give back to their neighbors and feel as though they are honoring themselves and building a connection with their higher power through the community.

Religion and faith provide seniors with residency and hope. If a senior is struggling with health concerns or anxieties about life, accessibility to spiritual practices in their senior living home can provide seniors with relief and structure.

Spirituality and MorningStar Senior Living

While MorningStar is founded on a Judeo-Christian tradition, we honor all faith systems and worldviews among our team members and residents. Our preeminent goal is to meet a resident’s social, emotional, physical and spiritual needs, all of which contribute to creating a comfortable home and offering truly compassionate care.

How to Transition a Parent to Assisted Living

March 27, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

It can be challenging for a parent to admit they need help. The truth is, they may never admit that they’re struggling. As the adult child of an aging parent, you have begun to notice changes in your parent’s home. Perhaps they are unable to care for the house as much, they have a difficult time driving themselves to doctor appointments or to complete errands, or perhaps they are experiencing behavioral changes. Even if you have voiced your concern, your parents may still argue against moving to an assisted living retirement community. You want to respect their wishes, but you know they need help. What can you do?

Assess your parent’s needs

Before relocating your parents to assisted living, assess what needs your parents currently have. What are they currently struggling with? Have they received a new medical diagnosis or require more supervision now? Keeping track of your parent’s daily activities and abilities will give you a better look into what they may need from an assisted living facility. Senior living facilities, like MorningStar Assisted Living Portland, offer personalized care plans that allow families to have a hands-on approach to their loved one’s care.

Advocate for your parent

In most cases, you can’t make your parents do anything against their will, and you shouldn’t want to. However, if you know in your gut that your parents need help, it may be worth standing up on their behalf to voice what you know is right for them. After assessing their needs, you will have a better idea of what struggles they are experiencing. Discuss these concerns with your parents, let them know you want what is best for them, and that you will work to make sure they are in proper care. Remember to be kind and calm when discussing your parent’s transition to assisted living.

5 TIPS FOR BEGINNING BIRDWATCHERS

March 25, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

One of the goals of our retirement community in Idaho Falls is to keep residents active throughout the year. From holding social events to taking day trips to local natural wonders, MorningStar of Idaho Falls is the ideal place to call home for older adults who want to continue to live active lifestyles. One activity that flies under the radar is the popular activity called birdwatching. Idaho Falls is a prime location to capture the flights of a wide variety of bird species.

Let’s review five tips for beginning birdwatchers to get the most out of this fun activity.

Invest in High-Quality Binoculars

You are going to watch birds mostly through the lenses attached to a pair of binoculars. Investing in a high-quality pair of binoculars allows you to get big, crisp, and bright up-close images of the birds in action. Binoculars especially come in handy when you want to zero in on a nest to watch baby birds cry out for their mother. Although spending less than $100 for a pair of binoculars appeals to your sensibly frugal ways, consider spending as much as $300 to receive superior images of the birds that you watch.

Know How to Attract Birds

Although hiking around to find birds to watch appeals to your adventurous side, the most successful way to birdwatch is to attract a flock or two to visit your home. You can accomplish this by placing a bird feeder near the entrance to your apartment at our assisted living facility in Idaho Falls. Bird feeders come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, but the most important element is what you put in a feeder for the birds to enjoy. Most birds love munching on sunflower seeds, which are readily available at both pet and grocery stores.

Capture the Moments

Binoculars help you get much closer to birds, but you can capture the moments for future viewing by investing in a still and/or video camera. Even using a sophisticated Smartphone can help you create a lifetime’s worth of memories of the birds that you watch. You can capture the majestic flight of an eagle, as well as shoot a flock of crows getting together for their daily meeting. Mounting a camera on a tripod helps you stabilize each shot.

Record What You See

Birds are creatures of habit, from returning to the same spot after every migration to feeding at the same field at the same time each day. As a beginner birdwatcher, you should record the activities of the birds that you watch for reference during upcoming years. You can write down your observations, but a more accurate description can be given by talking into a voice recorder.

Interact With Other Birdwatchers

Although you can develop a feeling of inner peace by watching birds on your own, the real joy of birdwatching comes from sharing your experiences with fellow birdwatchers. Making birdwatching a social event in addition to an educational event helps you gain insight into how other people approach this popular hobby. Joining a club that organizes bird watching expeditions is an effective way to make connections.

Another way to make connections while you birdwatch involves getting together with other residents of our assisted living facility in Idaho Falls. The mission “to honor, to value, to invest” has special relevance when it comes to the activities planned at MorningStar of Idaho Falls. Schedule a tour today to learn more about the activities scheduled at our senior living center in Idaho Falls.

Be Mindful of These Changing Dietary Needs in Old Age

March 25, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

Aging causes a lot of changes to our bodies, and this includes our relationship with our diet and eating habits. Seniors experience changing dietary needs and habits throughout aging. With age, you need to be especially careful to prevent nutrient deficiencies, dramatic weight changes, and dehydration.

Assisted living communities keep a senior’s health in mind when developing dining plans and recipes. Because of MorningStar’s knowledgeable executive chefs and trained assisted living staff, they can recommend the importance of being mindful of the following dietary needs in old age:

Dietary Changes in Old Age

While many changes can come with aging and our relationship with food, some of the more common are:

  • Decreased metabolism

  • Chronic inflammation

  • Losing muscle mass

  • Low stomach acid

  • Inability to recognize hunger and thirst cues

  • Dramatic weight gain or weight loss

  • And different taste preferences

These changes can make navigating your diet difficult and unpredictable. Many of these dietary changes and symptoms of old age may cause seniors to have an aversion to eating regular, balanced meals, which can greatly impact their overall health. The following whole foods are important for senior consumption and should be prioritized in assisted living dining menus:

Whole Foods

Fiber is an extremely beneficial component to any diet. However, fiber may be especially important for seniors who struggle with constipation, feeling full, and eating enough whole foods. Fresh, whole foods are generally great sources of fiber. Apples, carrots, sweet potatoes, and whole grains are high-fiber foods that can easily be incorporated into a senior’s diet for better health.
