Nature Walks: The Stress-Reducing Power of Green Spaces for Seniors

May 24, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

Engaging with nature through regular walks in green spaces offers tremendous health benefits, particularly for seniors. For those residing in assisted living Portland, senior living Portland, and retirement home Portland, accessing nearby parks or garden areas can significantly contribute to reducing stress and enhancing overall well-being.

Health Benefits of Nature Walks

Walking in nature is not only a gentle way to exercise but also a potent stress reliever. The natural settings provide a calm environment that can help lower blood pressure, reduce cortisol levels, and improve mood. The tranquility of green spaces allows seniors to disconnect from daily stresses and reconnect with the environment.

Improving Mental Well-being

Regular exposure to greenery and the outdoors has been shown to improve mental health. Nature walks can decrease feelings of depression and anxiety by providing sensory stimulation that invigorates the mind. For residents in senior living Portland, scheduled group walks can also offer social interaction, further boosting mental health.

Enhanced Physical Health

Physical activity such as walking has numerous benefits for seniors, including improved mobility, greater muscle strength, and enhanced cardiovascular health. Nature walks provide a safe and enjoyable way for seniors to maintain physical activity, especially for those in retirement home Portland who may have limited access to other forms of exercise.

Cognitive Benefits

Nature walks can also positively impact cognitive function. Navigating through a natural environment requires spatial awareness and attention, which can help keep the brain engaged and active. This is particularly beneficial for seniors, as regular mental challenges can slow cognitive decline.

Connection to Community

Participating in nature walks can help seniors feel more connected to their community and the natural world. Activities organized by assisted living Portland that include trips to local botanical gardens or nature reserves make it easy for seniors to explore new environments safely and comfortably.

Accessibility and Safety

Ensuring that nature walks are accessible and safe for seniors is crucial. Well-maintained paths that are flat and free of obstacles are ideal to prevent falls. Communities like senior living Portland can facilitate these walks by providing transportation to suitable locations and ensuring that staff or volunteers are present to assist as needed.

Therapeutic Effects of Being Outdoors

Being outdoors in a green environment can be incredibly therapeutic. It provides an opportunity to soak up vitamin D from sunlight, which is essential for bone health and immune function. The fresh air can also improve respiratory health, which is especially beneficial for seniors.

Engaging in regular nature walks is a simple and effective way for seniors to enhance their physical health, mental well-being, and quality of life. By integrating this activity into their routine, residents of assisted living Portland, senior living Portland, and retirement home Portland can enjoy the restorative benefits of being connected to nature while also staying active and healthy.

Navigating Cataract Surgery: What Seniors Need to Know

May 22, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

Cataract surgery is a common procedure that many seniors undergo to improve their vision impaired by cataracts. For residents in facilities like assisted living Portland, senior living Portland, and retirement home Portland, understanding what to expect before, during, and after cataract surgery can help alleviate any concerns and prepare for a successful recovery.

Understanding Cataracts and Surgery

Cataracts develop when the lens of the eye becomes cloudy, impairing vision. This condition is prevalent among the elderly. The surgery involves removing the cloudy lens and replacing it with an artificial lens, known as an intraocular lens (IOL), which restores clear vision. The procedure is highly effective and safe, with a high success rate.

Pre-Surgery Evaluation

Before undergoing cataract surgery, seniors will have a detailed evaluation to discuss their vision needs and health conditions. This includes measuring the eye to determine the correct lens implant. Facilities like senior living Portland can assist residents by arranging transportation to pre-surgery appointments and providing necessary support to manage preoperative anxiety.

The Day of Surgery

Cataract surgery is typically performed on an outpatient basis. The procedure usually takes less than an hour and does not require general anesthesia, which means patients are awake but will be given local anesthesia to numb the eye area. Support from community staff, such as those in retirement home Portland, can help in organizing the logistics for the day of surgery, ensuring that seniors arrive on time and have support throughout the process.

Post-Surgery Care

After cataract surgery, patients can usually go home the same day. Recovery generally involves a few weeks of healing, during which patients must use prescribed eye drops to prevent infection and aid healing. Staff in communities like assisted living Portland are often trained to assist residents with their medication schedules and to monitor for any signs of complications.

Visual Recovery

Improvements in vision can be noticed almost immediately after cataract surgery, but complete healing can take several weeks. During this time, it is common to experience some sensitivity to light and glare. Seniors are advised to wear protective eyewear and avoid strenuous activities during the recovery phase.

Follow-Up Care

Follow-up visits are crucial to monitor the eye’s healing process and ensure the success of the surgery. Seniors living in facilities such as senior living Portland should have arrangements in place for transportation to follow-up appointments. These visits are an opportunity to address any concerns and assess the need for further vision correction.

Support Services

Many senior living communities, including those in Portland, offer supportive services that are beneficial for residents undergoing cataract surgery. These services include assistance with medication management, transportation to and from medical appointments, and personalized care to ensure a smooth and effective recovery.

Cataract surgery is a routine procedure that can significantly improve the quality of life for seniors experiencing vision impairment due to cataracts. With the right preparation and support from communities like assisted living Portland, senior living Portland, and retirement home Portland, seniors can navigate their cataract surgery with confidence and ease, looking forward to clearer vision and an enhanced quality of life.

Superfoods for Seniors: Nutrition for a Healthy Aging Process

May 20, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

Incorporating superfoods into the diet can significantly benefit seniors by enhancing their health and vitality. This is especially important for residents of assisted living Portland, senior living Portland, and retirement home Portland, where nutrition plays a key role in maintaining an optimal aging process.

Understanding Superfoods

Superfoods are nutrient-rich foods considered to be particularly beneficial for health and well-being. They are packed with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other nutrients that are essential for the body, especially as it ages. These foods help in fighting off diseases, boosting the immune system, and reducing inflammation.

Benefits of Antioxidant-Rich Foods

Foods high in antioxidants are crucial for seniors because they combat the effects of free radicals, which are linked to age-related diseases. Berries such as blueberries and strawberries are excellent sources of antioxidants. Including these fruits in the diet of seniors in senior living Portland can help reduce the risk of chronic conditions like heart disease and cancer.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids for Brain Health

Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for maintaining brain health and cognitive function. Foods like salmon, mackerel, and walnuts are rich in omega-3s and can be beneficial additions to the diets of those in retirement home Portland. Regular consumption of these foods can help decrease the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and keep the mind sharp.

Fiber for Digestive Health

As digestion can slow down with age, incorporating fiber-rich foods into the diet is vital. Vegetables like broccoli and Brussels sprouts, and grains like quinoa and oats, can aid in maintaining a healthy digestive system. These foods help prevent constipation, which is common among older adults, and promote a healthy gut.

Calcium and Vitamin D for Bone Health

Maintaining bone health is crucial for seniors to prevent conditions such as osteoporosis. Dairy products, fortified plant milks, and leafy greens are excellent sources of calcium, while eggs and fatty fish like salmon provide vitamin D. Facilities such as assisted living Portland often ensure that meals are fortified with these nutrients to help sustain bone density and overall health.

Protein to Preserve Muscle Mass

Adequate protein intake is essential for preserving muscle mass and strength, which is vital for mobility and overall health. Lean meats, eggs, and legumes are great sources of high-quality protein. Integrating these into the meals provided in senior living Portland helps support seniors’ physical health and functionality.

Hydration for Overall Well-Being

While not a food, water is a crucial component of a senior’s diet. Proper hydration is vital for kidney function, cognitive health, and maintaining energy levels. Encouraging regular fluid intake is a priority in communities like retirement home Portland, ensuring that seniors stay hydrated throughout the day.

Implementing a diet rich in superfoods can significantly contribute to a healthier aging process for seniors.

By focusing on nutrient-dense foods that support various aspects of health, assisted living Portland, senior living Portland, and retirement home Portland can help residents maintain their health, vitality, and quality of life.

Why Location Matters: Choosing Senior Living Communities

May 17, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

When selecting a senior living community, location plays a pivotal role. Not only does it affect daily life and accessibility to services, but it also impacts the overall satisfaction and well-being of residents. For those considering places like assisted living Portland, senior living Portland, or retirement home Portland, understanding the significance of location can help in making a well-informed decision.

Accessibility to Essential Services

One of the key considerations when choosing a senior living community is the proximity to essential services. This includes healthcare facilities, shopping centers, and public transportation options. Communities well-situated near hospitals and clinics provide easy access to medical care, which is crucial for seniors with health concerns. For instance, retirement home Portland often boasts of excellent connections to local health services, ensuring that residents receive timely and efficient medical care.

Cultural and Recreational Opportunities

The cultural vibrancy of a location also significantly enhances the quality of life for seniors. Areas rich in cultural and recreational activities provide seniors with numerous opportunities to engage with the community and enjoy a variety of events. This is particularly true for senior living Portland, where the local culture is inclusive and engaging, offering everything from art galleries to concert halls that are senior-friendly.

Safety and Environment

The safety of the neighborhood is another critical aspect. Safe, well-maintained areas with low crime rates are preferable for senior communities as they provide peace of mind to both residents and their families. Additionally, the environmental quality, including green spaces, parks, and clean streets, contributes to the physical and mental well-being of seniors. Assisted living Portland, for example, might highlight its serene environment and secure surroundings as key benefits.

Climate and Geography

The local climate is another important factor to consider. Seniors often prefer locations with mild climates that are gentle on the body and conducive to year-round outdoor activities. Harsh winters or extremely hot summers might not be ideal for seniors, especially those with certain health conditions. Therefore, retirement home Portland, with its mild Pacific Northwest climate, can be an attractive option for those looking to avoid extreme weather.

Community and Social Connections

Being close to family and friends can be a significant factor in choosing a senior living location. It’s important for many seniors to remain in close proximity to loved ones to maintain those essential connections. Communities that facilitate family visits and social interactions can greatly improve the mental health and happiness of seniors.

Long-Term Viability

Finally, considering the long-term viability of a location is crucial. As needs and health conditions change, the community chosen should be able to accommodate those changes without requiring a move. Facilities that offer a range of care options, such as assisted living Portland, which can transition from independent living to more comprehensive care as required, are particularly valuable.

Choosing the right location for a senior living community involves a balance of practicality, comfort, and personal preference. Factors like accessibility, safety, cultural offerings, and climate all play into making a decision that will lead to a fulfilling and enriching senior lifestyle.

For residents in assisted living Portland, senior living Portland, and retirement home Portland, planning a springtime getaway involves selecting destinations that are not only enjoyable but also safe and senior-friendly.

Selecting Senior-Friendly Destinations

When choosing destinations for senior travelers, it’s important to consider accessibility, comfort, and convenience. Destinations with easy access to medical facilities, comfortable accommodations, and convenient transportation options are ideal. Places with a mild climate during spring and that are known for their hospitality towards seniors should be top choices.

Cultural and Historical Sites

Visiting cultural and historical sites can be both enriching and manageable for seniors. Cities with well-preserved historical districts or museums that offer senior discounts and special tours can be particularly appealing. These locations often have plenty of benches, restrooms, and other amenities that cater to the needs of older adults.

Cruise Vacations

Cruises are a popular option for seniors as they offer a controlled, safe environment with medical facilities on board. Many cruises cater specifically to seniors, offering a range of activities that suit their pace and physical capabilities. Whether exploring the Caribbean’s warm beaches or enjoying Europe’s spring bloom, cruises can provide a comprehensive travel experience with the ease of having a consistent place to stay.

Nature Escapes

For those who enjoy nature, destinations known for their natural beauty and outdoor activities can be very appealing. National parks, seaside towns, and mountain resorts that offer easy walking trails or guided tours can provide the beauty of nature with minimal risk. Places like these often have amenities designed to accommodate seniors, such as guided tours on smooth paths and wheelchair-accessible facilities.

Senior Tours

Many travel agencies offer tour packages designed specifically for seniors, providing group travel options that include transportation, accommodation, and a detailed itinerary. These tours can take the hassle out of travel planning and provide an added level of security by ensuring that all aspects of the trip are senior-friendly.

Travel Tips for Seniors

When planning travel, seniors should consider travel insurance that covers medical expenses and possible trip cancellations. Packing should include all necessary medications, comfortable clothing, and a first aid kit. It’s also advisable to keep family or caregivers informed about travel plans and to carry a mobile phone with emergency contacts readily accessible.

Facilities Support

Communities like assisted living Portland, senior living Portland, and retirement home Portland often provide support for seniors planning travel. This can include helping with bookings, preparing travel health kits, or even organizing group trips for residents.

Springtime travel offers seniors the perfect chance to break the routine and enjoy new experiences. With careful planning and choosing the right destinations, elderly travelers can enjoy a fulfilling and safe travel experience, making the most of the season’s offerings. Whether exploring new cities, taking a cruise, or enjoying nature, the world offers countless opportunities for senior adventurers.

Integrating Pecans into Senior Diets for Cognitive Benefits

May 10, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

Pecans are not just a tasty addition to diets; they are also packed with nutrients that can offer significant cognitive benefits, especially for seniors. In communities such as assisted living Portland, senior living Portland, and retirement home Portland, incorporating pecans into daily meals can contribute positively to maintaining and enhancing brain health.

Nutritional Profile of Pecans

Pecans are rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals that are essential for brain health. They contain high levels of vitamin E, zinc, and magnesium, which are known for their neuroprotective effects. The antioxidants in pecans can help fight oxidative stress and reduce inflammation, both of which are linked to cognitive decline.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids in Pecans

Omega-3 fatty acids are crucial for maintaining brain function and structure. Pecans contain alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), a type of plant-based omega-3 fatty acid, which has been shown to support brain health. Regular consumption of ALA-rich foods like pecans can help enhance memory and prevent age-related cognitive decline.

Cognitive Benefits

Incorporating pecans into the diet has been associated with a lower risk of certain neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease. The neuroprotective vitamins and minerals in pecans help enhance cognitive function and can improve the neural mechanisms in aging brains, making them an excellent snack for seniors in facilities like senior living Portland.

How to Integrate Pecans into Diets

Pecans can be added to a senior’s diet in various delicious and healthy ways:

– Mixed into breakfast cereals or oatmeal for a crunchy texture and a boost of energy.

– Baked into whole-grain breads or muffins, providing a satisfying snack or dessert option.

– Blended into smoothies for a nutty flavor and extra nutritional content.

– As a salad topping, adding a bit of crunch and flavor to any vegetable dish.

Healthy Recipes

Creating simple, pecan-based recipes can be an enjoyable activity for residents of retirement home Portland. For example, pecan-crusted fish or chicken is an easy-to-prepare dish that serves as a healthy protein source with the cognitive benefits of pecans. Pecan and fruit parfaits can also serve as a sweet, nutritious dessert or snack.

Ensuring Balanced Consumption

While pecans are beneficial, they are also high in calories and fats, and thus should be consumed in moderation. Nutritionists and healthcare providers in assisted living Portland can help create balanced meal plans that include pecans in appropriate portions to maximize health benefits without risking weight gain.

Encouraging Nut Consumption in Community Settings

Many senior communities, like those in retirement home Portland, encourage the consumption of nuts, including pecans, by providing them as part of daily meal plans or as snacks. Educating residents about the health benefits of pecans can also increase their willingness to incorporate them into their regular diet.

Integrating pecans into the diets of seniors can provide numerous cognitive benefits, supporting brain health and overall well-being. Facilities such as assisted living Portland, senior living Portland, and retirement home Portland can play a pivotal role in facilitating this nutritious addition to their residents’ diets.

What Foods Should Seniors Consider for Better Health?

April 24, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

As we age, we should pay added attention to our health. This means we should be considering our diet to a deeper extent. The ingredients we use in our meals deeply affect us, and some ingredients have more benefits than others. For seniors, be sure to consider the following foods when deciding on your next meal, as they may improve your health in ways you never thought before!

Seniors should consider the following foods for better health:

Dark Leafy Vegetables

Leafy greens like kale, swiss chard, and spinach have incredible health benefits for seniors. These vegetables are packed with essential nutrients including vitamins A, C, K, and magnesium which are all vital for supporting body functions like cognitive health, sleep, and bone health.

Probiotics

Probiotics are a great addition to any diet. Fermented foods like kimchi or sauerkraut are great for gut health and can be a tasty addition to many popular dishes. Regularly eating yogurt with live cultures also has incredible gut benefits which can help bloating, constipation, and other gastrointestinal concerns.

Protein

Protein is an extremely important aspect of any diet. Not only does protein fuel our brains and help to keep us full and satiated throughout the day, but it also supports our bodies to do a lot of other vital functions, like stabilizing blood sugar levels and helping with tissue repair.

A Guide to Medication Management for Seniors in Senior Living Care

April 22, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

Medication management is a serious need for most seniors, especially those in assisted living care. While most assisted living offers medication management, some senior living communities are more dependable and reassuring than others. Many factors should be considered when looking for senior living with trusted medication management, like educated staff, medical collaboration, and family involvement. This should involve careful research and touring to ensure the assisted living facility is right for your loved one. Below is a guide to help you find the best assisted living Portland has to offer.

Research Your Assisted Living Options

The best assisted living Portland provides for seniors with medical conditions should include medication management. Be sure to research potential senior living in Portland that you feel could be the right fit for your loved one. While many communities boast medication management, the living situations may not be ideal. All inclusive retirement homes with medication management will promise your loved one ample and routine care while providing access to various amenities and activities daily.

Evaluate Staff Training

Since senior living communities are not the same as hospitals or medical-run facilities, it’s important to evaluate the staff working in assisted living homes. While rare, medication errors and mismanagement can happen. This is why it is important to find a senior care community that has properly trained and knowledgeable staff who are dedicated to providing proper treatment for your loved one.

Look at the Health and Happiness of Residents

While touring potential assisted living communities, be sure to evaluate the residents as much as the staff. The visible health and happiness of residents can give you a great inside look into how medication and medical needs are handled in the senior living community. I Am mindful of the relationships and communications shared between staff and residents, as well as residents to each other.

Are You Experiencing Memory Problems?

April 17, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

If you or a loved one is experiencing troubling memory problems, it is important to see your healthcare provider. While there is no cure for Alzheimer’s or other dementia-related diseases, there are steps you can take to mitigate or delay the onset of the disease.

The Alzheimer’s Association explains, “Physicians and other medical professionals are a central part of the care team of a person living with dementia. Along with other members — which may include family, friends or others — they work to provide support throughout the course of the disease.” Therefore, one of the best ways to ensure optimal care is to honestly communicate with your physician.

To establish a good relationship with the doctor, a person or family member should take some time to prepare for the visit. Helpful tips from the Alzheimer’s Association include:

  • Document any changes in your health, including your mood, memory and behaviors.

  • Make a note of any changes you’ve noticed since your last appointment.

  • Create a list of current prescriptions and over-the-counter medications.

  • Write down any vitamins or supplements you’ve added to your medication regimen.

  • Make a list of questions you want to ask.

Writing down questions you have beforehand makes sure you don’t forget them, and don’t be reluctant to ask questions if you don’t understand something. The Alzheimer’s Association National Early-Stage Advisory Group, made up of men and women in the early stages of Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia, put together a list of questions to help others make the most out of a doctor’s visit. Questions range from asking about the type of tests used to make a diagnosis, what to expect from the disease, and what type of treatments may be used. When seeing a specialist, ask how familiar they are with caring for patients with Alzheimer’s disease.

At MorningStar at West San Jose, we offer assisted living along with 34 suites for those suffering from Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases in our distinct Reflections Neighborhood. Our holistic memory care is individualized for each resident and designed to stimulate or calm in response to a particular mood or situation.  Each day is filled with activities that incorporate music, dance, art, aromatherapy, or animals to heal and comfort residents.  Visit our website for more information about trusted senior living in San Jose.

The people that compliment us best are most likely to make the right roommate for years to come.

The Benefits of Companion Living at MorningStar Senior Living Portland

Living with a spouse, partner, or close friend can provide many benefits for seniors in assisted living care. Firstly, it’s important for a senior’s health to not impede too greatly on their comfortability and familiarity. Adopting a pet can provide seniors with unconditional love and affection during difficult times or when working through grief and loss.

Maintaining Routines & A Newfound Sense of Purpose

Pets help us stay active and maintain routines. Once you begin bonding with a new pet, you will dedicate time to a feeding, walking, and play time schedule. Having a pet schedule can help us feel more involved in our own lives.

Our pets also rely on us. For many seniors, it may have been a long time since they last cared for someone unable to do so on their own. Adopting a pet can provide seniors with a sense of purpose to care for and protect something other than ourselves. This is what can make owning a pet very rewarding.

Pet Friendly Senior Living in Parker

Not only are our pets companions that bring us tons of joy, but they greatly benefit the lives of seniors in numerous ways. This is why MorningStar is a pet-friendly senior living community. We encourage seniors in assisted living to bring their pets as they provide added comfort and support. However, seniors should carefully consider their abilities and lifestyle before adopting a pet to ensure a successful relationship. Some communities have a weight limit on pets, and we do need to assess an animal’s appropriateness for our community on a case-by-case basis. Check-in with your MorningStar community to review any breed restrictions or other limitations.

What to Look for When Touring Senior Living Options

April 15, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

Many seniors and their family members may feel overwhelmed by the idea of senior living. Some families have never had to look into senior care before, making deciding on a senior living arrangement uncertain and frustrating. You want to pick the right place for yourself or your loved one. How can you be sure that you’re making the right choice? With so many senior living options in Portland, touring a senior living community with assisted living options can tell you a lot about their culture and overall senior health and happiness.

If you are considering assisted living care in Portland, Here’s what to look for while touring senior living communities:

Happy, Helpful and Available Senior Care Staff

Upon first touring a senior living community, keep a record of how many staff members greet you or offer assistance. Someone should be at the front desk at all times with a smile ready to help you. While touring, check to see if there is a good staff-to-resident ratio, this will ensure that you or your loved one will be properly looked after. Staff in assisted living communities should not appear burdened or under-trained. Watch how staff helps the residents and communicates with other staff and management. Finding the right Assisted Living Community in Portland can be easy if you know what you’re looking for!

Plenty of Activities, Amenities, and Community Involvement

While most retirement homes have some amenities and access to common rooms, you can find active senior living in Portland by ensuring that your future assisted living community offers modern amenities and activities like an on-site gym, salon, bistro, movie theatre, courtyards and activity rooms. Active senior living includes regularly planned social community events, like holiday parties, classes, and other special activities. Be sure to find a senior living community that makes you excited for every day!

What are Some of the Best Hobbies for Seniors?

April 12, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

Seniors often feel like they’ve done it all! While it certainly can be true that a senior has accomplished a lot in their lifetime, there may also be things they’ve never tried before. As we age, it may become harder for us to branch out and try new hobbies or activities. Senior living communities find it important to offer new activities and hobbies to seniors, especially seniors in assisted living who may struggle with experiencing new things on their own.

If you want to find a new hobby for yourself or think a loved one may benefit from a new activity, keep reading to find some of the best hobbies for seniors in senior living care

Photography

Photography is a relatively easy hobby for seniors to pick up and enjoy because of the easygoing feel of taking photos and exploring a camera. While it may take a little time to learn the ins and outs of a new camera, once you get the hang of it, taking photos can be a relaxing way to express yourself, make art, and show your pictures to family and friends.

Nature Walks

The great thing about taking up nature walking as a hobby is that this activity can be done alone, with another person, or in a group. Walking in nature is a great way to center yourself, get fresh air, and experience the outdoors on a deeper level. You may find that this new hobby can bring you a lot of peace and newfound joy for the world around you!

Learning an Instrument

It is never too late to learn a new thing. In retirement, seniors may feel uncertain about trying something new, but they may enjoy it more than they thought. Learning a new instrument can add some healthy challenges to a senior’s life and can give them something to practice and master.

MorningStar at West San Jose Offers Comfort, Wellness, and Community

April 05, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

If you still think assisted living is an “old person’s home,” you could not be more mistaken. Today’s senior living communities are a far cry from old-fashioned facilities like nursing homes, and offer a vibrant lifestyle of comfort, wellness, and community. As a resident, you have opportunities to grow, learn and contribute.

Skilled nursing facilities (SNF) had their beginnings decades ago as “nursing homes,” and in a time when there were few other options for senior care. Today SNF typically focus on short-term rehab including helping patients discharged from the hospital after surgery or illness. SNF staff include RNs and CNAs, and specialize in serving residents in fragile and declining health.

Assisted living is designed to assist residents with the activities of daily living (ADLs) such as toileting, dressing, and bathing. However, assisted living communities like MorningStar at West San Jose provide much more than just physical care.  Along with a wealth of amenities, activities and services, it is designed to feel like a real home.  MorningStar’s services help families by providing transportation to doctor appointments and other errands as well as onsite supportive services from third-party providers including physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy.  Residents have the opportunity for plenty of socializing and are encouraged to participate in a range of activities and wellness programs.

MorningStar’s services also include providing housekeeping to ensure residents’ homes are tidy and clean.  By taking care of meals, we help residents get the daily nutrition they need.  Moreover, meals are served restaurant-style in our beautiful dining room as we believe breaking bread together provides far more than physical nutrients but bonds us as family and friends.  We also help with another common problem many seniors experience when living alone, which is forgetting to or improperly taking medications.  We solve this by offering medication management services.

Please contact us for more information about the finest senior living in San Jose.  Our beautiful community has 69 stylish suites for assisted living and another 34 suites devoted to the individualized care of residents with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.

MorningStar at West San Jose’s mission statement of “to honor, to value, to invest” sets us apart from other senior living communities. We have built a foundation on honoring God, valuing our seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve. Set in a warm, loving atmosphere with beautiful surroundings and resort-style amenities, we provide outstanding assisted living and memory care.

5 REASONS TO MAKE POTATOES A PART OF YOUR DIET

March 28, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

Every state has something that defines it. For Idaho, that something is root vegetables called potatoes. Idaho’s rich volcanic soil is the perfect type of soil for potatoes to thrive. Potatoes are such a fixture in Idaho that Blackfoot pays homage to the root vegetable by acquiring the nickname “Potato Capital of the World.” At our senior living center in Idaho Falls, potatoes are one of the most popular staples served under our dining program.

One reason why potatoes are widely popular concerns the relatively lost cost of buying the root vegetable. However, the low price alone does not make potatoes a popular dish to serve at any meal. Let’s look at five reasons to make potatoes a part of your diet.

Plenty of Nutrients

At our retirement community in Idaho Falls, we emphasize the importance of serving nutritious meals. Including potatoes as part of our meals helps us achieve our nutrition goals. One medium baked potato that includes the skin delivers nearly 30 percent of the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) of vitamin C and about 25 percent of the RDA for vitamin B6. Potatoes also contain potassium, manganese, and magnesium.

Disease Fighting Antioxidants

Potatoes contain compounds such as flavonoids and phenolic acids that act as antioxidants, which neutralize potentially harmful molecules called free radicals. An increase in the number of free radicals can increase the risk of developing chronic diseases like cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. One study concluded that the high amount of antioxidants in potatoes can stifle the growth of liver and colon cancer cells.

Help Control Blood Sugar

Potatoes are uniquely nutritional because they are known to contain a special type of starch called resistant starch. This type of unique starch is not broken down and fully absorbed by the body. The result is that much of the starch enters the large intestine where it produces several health benefits, including a reduction in insulin resistance that helps control blood sugar. One study demonstrated that test subjects with type 2 diabetes who consumed potatoes showed a reduction in insulin resistance.

Improved Digestive Health

The resistant starch found in potatoes also plays a role in improving digestive health. When resistant starch reaches the large intestine, it turns into food for beneficial gut bacteria, which digest it to create short-chain fatty acids. The short-chain fatty acids then reduce inflammation of the colon to strengthen the colon’s defenses against infections, as well as reduce the risk of the development of colorectal cancer.

Highly Versatile

Potatoes deliver many health benefits, but what if you do not like baked potatoes or a recipe that includes potatoes as an ingredient? The answer is potatoes represent one of the most versatile types of vegetables. You can boil, fry, steam, and bake potatoes. If frying potatoes produces too many calories, you can reduce the caloric intake by slicing a few potatoes and drizzling them in olive oil before roasting them in an oven. Potatoes are easy to include in your diet if you do a little experimenting.

Eat Healthy at Our Assisted Living Facility in Idaho Falls

You have several factors to consider before choosing a retirement community in Idaho Falls. One of the most important factors to consider concerns the meal program. At our senior living center in Idaho Falls, we emphasize the importance of eating nutritious meals that include the root vegetable potatoes.Learn more about the MorningStar commitment to nutrition by scheduling a tour of our assisted living facility in Idaho Falls.

Do Your Elderly Parents Need More Care?

March 25, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

Are you worried about your elderly parents getting the care they need at home? Assisted living communities are one way to make sure they get the care they need, while giving family members the peace of mind they need.

To help ensure the community you choose is a good, all-around fit, experts say the trick is to find one based on your parents’ needs, their lifestyle and budget. A Place for Mom, one of the largest senior living referral websites, says the key to a successful move for mom or dad is to have a frank and open conversation with the family to make sure everyone is on the same page. Be sure your parents have the chance to give their opinion.

When you begin the actual search, remember assisted living is not a nursing home or memory care. To determine the best community for them, start by addressing their ADLs’ (activities of daily living) needs. Keep in mind the amount of help they need right now and how much help they will most likely need over the next couple of years. After all, you do not want to go through the process of getting them settled into a community and then face another move if their needs can no longer be met.

Determine your parents’ budget, and if you need help in that area, seek advice from an elder care financial service or attorney. At MorningStar Assisted Living & Memory Care at West San Jose, we have partnered with Elderlife Financial Services to present different financial resources commonly used to pay for senior living.

Another important step is to visit (either in person or virtually) the community and to get to know the staff. Narrowing down your choices includes considering things such as how convenient it will be for the family to visit and is it located close to medical facilities, shopping and other services.  Furthermore, find out if the community is accepting new residents, and if not, you may want to get on their waiting list.

At MorningStar at West San Jose, we offer a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community.  In addition to assisted living and memory care, we offer respite care and short-term stays (from one week up to a full month) that are ideal to see if we are a good fit. Please contact us to learn more about luxury senior living in San Jose, CA.

MorningStar takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003.  We believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless; and we act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof. Finding Long-Term Memory Care for a Loved One

March 20, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

Searching for memory care for a loved one that suits the person’s needs as well as the family’s is challenging at best. Knowing the person is dependent on getting the level of care they need for both their wellbeing and safety makes choosing the right home essential. Experts say start by taking your time to think about your loved one’s needs including daily personal care required such as dressing, toileting, bathing, etc. as well as any on-going medical needs.

Additionally, do they have mobility issues and use a wheelchair or a walker; or do they need assistance eating? If the person is known to wander, you will want a secure home to keep him or her safe including alarms on the doors. Another thing experts say is to let the community know if the person is prone to angry outbursts or other aggressive behaviors.

Once you have a good idea of your loved one’s needs, now look at communities that are equipped to handle those needs. Ask about living arrangements, dining service, and the level of daily help the person will receive. Moreover, does the community offer exercise programs and other meaningful activities?

Now inquire about the homes’ experience with Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia, and the training the staff has in dementia care. What is the home’s philosophy of care and how do they approach difficult situations such as aggressive behaviors? Most of all do the staff seem caring and do residents appear to be content and well-looked after?

Along with assisted living, MorningStar at West San Jose offers compassionate and loving memory care to those suffering from Alzheimer’s or other dementia-related diseases.  Every aspect of our Reflections Neighborhood is geared toward residents’ care from meaningful activities, trained caregivers, food service, and security. Please contact us or visit our website to learn more about exceptional senior living at MorningStar.

MorningStar is guided by a culture rooted in our mission of honoring God, valuing seniors, and investing in our team, which allows us to deliver services with warmth, sincerity and depth of purpose. We have built a reputation for creating homes filled with an atmosphere of love and community. Please contact us for more information about the finest senior living in San Jose, CA.
