HOW TO STAY BUSY AT A SENIOR LIVING CENTER IN IDAHO FALLS

February 16, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

Older adults share the same basic needs that other people have regardless of age. One of the most important needs for older adults is to interact with their peers. At a retirement community in Idaho Falls, Idaho, older adults get the opportunity to interact with their peers every day. From enjoying meals together to watching a live sporting event in the entertainment room, our senior living center in Idaho Falls ensures every resident interacts with other residents to stay mentally alert, as well as fend off the negative emotions that are associated with loneliness and isolation.

Let’s learn how to stay busy at a senior living center in Idaho Falls.

Develop New Skills

They say you cannot teach an old dog new tricks. Fortunately, the saying does not apply to older adults. Ongoing education helps you feel energized, as well as keeps you interested in life and its many events. Learning new skills gives the brain a rigorous workout, which helps prevent memory loss. You can learn how to create arts and crafts such as paintings and apparel. Listening to a scholarly presentation ignites the brain to contemplate new ideas and concepts. Many of our residents learn new technical skills like the ones taught during computer classes.

Entertainment

Accessing the audio-visual equipment in the entertainment room of our senior living center in Idaho Falls is just one way residents stay active. Residents also have the opportunity to take trips outside our retirement community in Idaho Falls to catch other forms of entertainment. Maybe you like stand-up comedy acts or prefer to participate in live trivia games. Idaho Falls is home to a wide variety of life theater events, as well as sports competitions. Gather your friends at MorningStar of Idaho Falls for a weekly trip to catch the latest Hollywood movie.

Fitness

The proven research data that links robust physical health with strong mental health makes it essential that any retirement community in Idaho Falls on your shortlist boasts an active fitness calendar. Our senior living center in Idaho Falls offers access to an on-site fitness center that includes a gym and a large pool. You also can sign up for dancing and aerobic classes to enhance your mental and physical fitness. Although classes present an opportunity to participate in organized fitness activities, you do not have to wait for a scheduled event to get your heart pumping. Swimming and weight training are just two of the physical fitness activities you can do on your own.

Games

Combine social interaction with mental stimulation, and you have one of the most effective ways to stay busy at a senior living center in Idaho Falls. Games remain the standard for planning your day at MorningStar of Idaho Halls, from the classic game of bingo to more physically demanding games such as golf, bowling, and tennis. Play a game of solitaire when you are on your own, as well as take on one of your friends for a competitive game of chess or checkers. Crossword puzzles are a great way to whittle away a rainy day, while shuffleboard keeps you energized on a beautiful summer day. Staying active represents the most effective strategy for maintaining robust mental, physical, and cognitive health. Find out how to stay busy at our senior living center in Idaho Falls by scheduling a tour today.

Financial Scams Targeting Older Adults Are on the Rise

February 14, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

Each year elderly seniors fall prey to ruthless schemes that rob them of their money and identity. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), In 2022, there were over 88,000 older victims of fraud resulting in $3.1 billion in losses.  This was an 82% increase in losses compared to 2021.  The sad part is that it is often a result of a senior’s trusting nature or feelings of isolation and loneliness; or in some cases, a senior may have cognitive issues that impair their judgement and decision-making skills.

Experts explain there are several reasons why seniors are more susceptible to fraudulent schemes starting with the fact they tend to be very trusting.  Our elderly population was typically raised to be polite and agreeable to others, which in turn can make them more susceptible to fraud. Lonely seniors can easily be preyed upon as they are willing to stay on the phone and engage in conversation with a stranger.

The National Council on Aging (NCOA) alerts the public to scams targeting seniors so if you have a parent or other elderly loved ones who may be at risk, look at the information and discuss the various schemes used with them.  One scam frequently used is for a thief to call unsuspecting victims and pretend to be from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Social Security Administration, or Medicare. They have many angles such as saying the individual has unpaid taxes or their Social Security or Medicare benefits are in danger of being cut off.  They then demand payment (in the case of unpaid taxes) or ask for personal identifying information, which is then used to commit fraud. These impersonators often “spoof” the actual phone numbers of the government agency, or call from the same area code for Washington, DC, tricking the victim into believing the call is legitimate.

The NCOA says there are ways to avoid getting scammed such as never giving out your personal information to anyone but a trusted family member, friend or your professional financial advisor.  In addition, never make big financial decisions without consulting with one of those trusted people.  Also, do not give out personal PIN numbers, or Medicare and other financial information over the phone unless you initiated the call or know the person.

Other commonsense advice includes being wary of high-pressure salespersons, never signing a contract until you understand it entirely, and to be suspicious of unexpected announcements of winning money, trips, or other prizes.  Experts say it is most likely a hoax.  Always take your time when making financial decisions and do not give blanket approval to a vendor for medical equipment and other purchases.

MorningStar at West San Jose’s foundation is based on the mission to honor God, value seniors and invest in our staff to create a unique senior living experience.  Set in a warm, loving atmosphere with beautiful surroundings and resort-style amenities, we provide the area’s finest assisted living and memory care.  Please contact us or visit our website to learn more.

Affordable Senior Living Options in Portland

January 26, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

If you are searching for affordable senior living options in Portland, Oregon, you probably want to make sure you aren’t sacrificing care or amenities for affordability. All seniors want to live a stress-free life in a home where they feel safe and excited to be there. If you are searching for affordable retirement homes in Portland that offer seniors and their families the best amenities and living arrangements without sacrificing on care, keep reading to explore your options.

If staying in your home or living with family members is no longer an option for an elderly parent or loved one, other affordable senior care options will need to be considered. If you want to find affordable retirement homes, you will need to consider the following:

        1. Level of Care.

Determining what level of care your elderly loved one requires is one of the first steps to finding affordable senior living. For those in need of assisted living or memory care, they may require more assistance, attention and supervision than a senior going into independent living. Because of this, it is crucial to determine how much caretaking your loved one requires to be safe and healthy. This way, you can find a senior retirement community that provides top-notch senior care, activities and amenities.

       2. Benefits and Insurance.

Is your loved one a veteran? Do they hold any long-term care insurance? If so, these can be valuable assets that make senior living more affordable without sacrificing on care and amenities.

Veteran Benefits, such as “Aid & Attendance” is a tax-free pension paid directly to the qualified veteran or spouse and can cover some costs for Assisted Living. The monthly benefits are subject to change annually, so check in with your retirement community to get the proper estimate.

Long-term care insurance pays for a variety of services in senior communities and can offer care options that may not be covered through the federal subsidies of Medicare and Medicaid. Be sure to check with your loved one to confirm if they have this coverage and if it is accepted by your retirement community.

How to Find the Best Senior Living in Portland

January 24, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

Trusted retirement homes may feel hard to come by these days. You want to make sure you are giving your loved one a safe and secure home as they transition to a retirement home. How can you know that you are making the right choice for your parents or elderly loved one? In Portland, you can find safe and trusted senior living communities that encourage senior independence while offering luxury-style amenities and skilled caregiving support. This guide will help you better understand how seniors can feel safe in retirement living near you.

    1. Do your research.

Research your local senior living communities. Start by spending some time searching through listings online and exploring their websites. This will give you a good grasp of what is available for senior living options around you. Spend some time looking at the pictures of the community and imagine how your loved one may feel there. Does this community align with their personality, values and wants?

      2. Read Testimonials.

If you think you’ve found the best assisted living or independent senior community, find what others are saying online. A trusted retirement community will be sure to have easy to access testimonials and reviews for you to read. A senior living community should feel proud of the community they have to offer and the work they are doing.

       3. Consider Preferences.

Involve your senior loved one in the process of finding them the right senior living community. Whether they need assisted living or memory care, you will want to know what preferences they have for their new home. Are they active individuals? Foodies? Maybe they enjoy spending more time outdoors? Even style preferences should be taken into consideration to make sure your loved one is happy and excited about their new retirement home.

How to Better Describe Symptoms to Your Doctor

January 15, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

Although it is first-hand, it is not always easy to describe to a doctor what is going on regarding medical problems. Describing various symptoms is quite all-together different from getting the results of actual lab tests or a doctor’s opinion after a physical exam.

Relating symptoms clearly can help narrow down the problem, and medical experts share some advice on how best to do it. They start by telling patients to skip the medical jargon and just use their own words to describe what they are feeling.

Dr. Lisa Ravindra, an assistant professor in the department of internal medicine and a primary care physician at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, says, “Avoid using vague terms for timing like ‘for a while’ or stating that a symptom occurs ‘once in a while’ since these mean different things to different people.” She explains it is helpful to be as precise as possible when talking about symptoms including the amount of time you have had them for such as three days, or on and off for a week. Doctors say it is helpful to rate your pain from one to ten.

Other helpful things you can do include using a blood pressure monitor to chart your blood pressure, and if you feel feverish, take your temperature. Keep track of other important symptoms such as sore throat, earache, coughing, vomiting, diarrhea, etc. Be sure to mention unexpected weight loss, fatigue when doing things you typically do, or specific type and location of pain, i.e. a constant, sharp pain in the front of the right knee. If you have a chronic condition, doctors say it helps to keep a journal of symptoms to discuss with your doctor during your next visit.

MorningStar at West San Jose is a senior living community offering older adults a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and security.  Amenities include a fitness center, healthy meals served restaurant-style, enrichment activities, and more. Remarkable for our beautiful surroundings and resort-style amenities, we are most proud of our dedicated team who understand it is a privilege to serve seniors.  For trusted assisted living or memory care in San Jose, CA, please contact us or visit our website.

MorningStar takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003.  We believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless; and we act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof. The Importance of Personalized Care Options in Senior Living

December 22, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

Senior Living Communities that offer a personalized continuum of care allow residents to live in a comfortable and familiar environment throughout their senior years. As their needs change, seniors can receive changing and individualized care that suits them without the stress of relocating to a new community or care facility.

One of the things that set good senior living communities apart from other retirement homes in Portland is prioritizing a personalized continuum of care for seniors. At MorningStar, every senior is unique with distinctive needs, preferences, and goals.

Keep reading to understand the importance of personalized care options in senior living communities.

We Value Your Independence

Individualized care plans boost and maintain a senior’s independence, no matter their care level. In assisted living, staff members and managers tailor their approach to meet each resident’s unique needs. Rather than following a one-size-fits-all approach to care, our team at MorningStar Assisted Living Portland works with each resident and their family to develop a care plan that is specific to their needs and preferences. This can include everything from assistance with daily tasks to medication management.

Families Appreciate Personalized and Ongoing Care

Loved ones and family members play a crucial role in the decision-making process to find the right senior living community. Families want to be able to visit their loved ones in the same home and watch them grow, make friends and enjoy life in a healthy environment. MorningStar Retirement homes provide assurance that loved ones receive the care they need within the same community with an added sense of security for families.

Untreated Sleep Apnea Can Put a Person at Risk of Serious Medical Conditions

December 18, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

The US News & World Report says approximately 1 in 3 adults are believed to have obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). They explain the condition causes a person to momentarily stop breathing at intervals throughout the night and interrupting their sleep.

Pulmonologist and section head of sleep medicine at National Jewish Health in Denver, Dr. Sheila Tsai, explains, “A person’s airway either partially collapses or completely closes (obstructs) during sleep.” She says episodes can be frequent throughout the sleep cycle and cause drops in oxygenation. While the person may only awake briefly as they struggle to breathe, their sleep is fragmented and non-restorative as it infers with REM, the deep, restful stage of sleep.

Common causes of OSA are obesity and age, and The Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine estimates as many as 80 percent of people suffering from OSA are undiagnosed. The condition typically causes the person to snore loudly, interrupted with gasps, hesitations and snorts. They may wake up feeling unrefreshed and sleepy during the day, or complain of headaches. OSA can additionally cause other sleep disorders to become worse like restless-leg syndrome and sleep walking.

Doctors say OSA is a serious, but treatable condition and it is important to seek medical care. A sleep study or test done in a clinic setting or even at home is the best way to diagnose the condition. Untreated OSA can put a person at a higher risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes and other problems.

6 DECORATING TIPS FOR YOUR RETIREMENT COMMUNITY HOME

December 13, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

Home sweet home.

Moving into a senior living center in Idaho Falls does not mean you have to cut back on decor ideas. Yes, you have to rethink your decorating plan because of a smaller living space. However, many of the same stylish decor ideas that worked well in your previous home remain relevant for your new home.

Let’s review six time-tested decorating tips for your retirement community home in Idaho Falls.

Leverage the Visual Power of Sunlight

Numerous studies demonstrate the link between exposure to sunlight and mental health. Exposure to natural light is even more important to seniors because it elevates mood and boosts vitamin D levels. Open your blinds to allow sunlight to make your room’s space appear to be much larger. Sunlight also is nature’s way of helping our body’s clock maintain a healthy sleep schedule.

Display Lighter Colors

Just as sunlight enhances the ambiance of a room, the same can be said for displaying lighter colors. Lighter color accents exude a calm ambiance by going easier on the eye than bolder colors. Painting a room one light color represents an effective way to invite more sunlight into your room. White is always a good option for room color, but you have other lighter color options as well.

Hang Mirrors

One of the keys to decorating a room at an assisted living facility in Idaho Falls is to prevent feeling confined in your new living space. Regardless of how many windows are in your room, consider hanging a couple of mirrors to create more visual space. Hanging mirrors near natural light sources represents an effective strategy for reflecting both natural and artificial light.

Optimize Vertical Space

Less square footage inside a room at a retirement community in Idaho Falls does not mean you have to send some personal items to a storage facility. Fill the walls at your new senior living center home with artwork and personal artifacts such as family photographs. You also might be able to install a flat-screen television on one of the walls to free up space for more furniture. One or more bookshelves also help free up more space by displaying books and visually appealing artwork.

Go Green

Increasing the amount of natural sunlight in your room is one strategy to help elevate your mood and the ambiance of the room. Another strategy that works well for boosting mood involves adding plants. Whether you place plants on corner tables or hang them from the ceiling, going green is a great way to create a warm, inviting ambiance that your friends and family will appreciate when they come to visit.

Keep It Simple

Many ideas come into your mind when concerning how to decorate your new home at an assisted living facility. Keep the ideas simple, and you should create a living space that makes you feel at home. Downsize the number of furniture pieces to prevent the appearance of a cluttered space. Use storage organizers to help you save space, as well as complement the room’s color scheme. Above all, make sure your new home is functional and accessible.

How Does Personality Affect Cognitive Decline?

December 13, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

The Journal of Personality and Social Psychology published an interesting article from the Rush Memory and Aging Project, a longitudinal study of older Chicago-area adults that began in 1997. The intent of the survey was to determine if personalities affect cognitive decline, and included nearly 2,000 people.

The study focused on examining the role of three key personality traits – conscientiousness, extroversion and neuroticism – to see if they are a factor in cognitive decline in later life. Researchers say evidence suggests being more conscientious and extroverted may keep mild cognitive impairment at bay longer. Participants who exhibited higher levels of neuroticism increased their chances of cognitive decline.

The lead author of the study, Tomiko Yoneda, a psychology postdoctoral student at the University of Victoria in Canada, explains, “Personality traits reflect relatively enduring patterns of thinking and behaving, which may cumulatively affect engagement in healthy and unhealthy behaviors and thought patterns across the lifespan.” Extroverted, socially engaged people appeared to have an additional year of dementia-free living; and those who scored high on conscientiousness might have two more years without cognitive issues as compared with those who scored low in conscientiousness.

While other studies back up these results, scientists agree further studies will be needed. For example, Dr. Richard Isaacson, director of the Alzheimer’s Prevention Clinic in the Center for Brain Health at Florida Atlantic University’s Schmidt College of Medicine, cautions, while “specific traits may increase risk due to a lifetime of behaviors that predispose a person to developing cognitive decline or Alzheimer’s disease, there may be more of a direct biological role related to early disease pathology.”

Sustainable Practices in Senior Living Communities

December 11, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

Green living is a popular trend among communities. In recent years, senior living retirement homes have followed in the footsteps of establishments transitioning to a more sustainable way of living. Retirement homes in Portland are aware of the importance of sustainable practices and know that there is an increasing popularity amongst residents for clean living.

One of the most influential things any senior living community can do is educate residents and caregivers about green practices and how to incorporate sustainability into their daily lives. Keep reading to explore some sustainable practices seniors can begin utilizing in their senior living communities at MorningStar.

Reducing Waste in Assisted Living and Retirement Homes Portland

Trash from plastic and one-use products leads to an abundance of waste on the planet. This waste pollutes waterways, natural ecosystems, and reduces the curb appeal of neighborhoods and cities. Plus, much of this waste cannot decompose for many, many years. That being said, seniors can find the most empathetic senior living Portland has to offer that encourages reducing waste within the communities. Seniors in retirement living at MorningStar in Portland can practice reducing waste in their senior living apartments by reusing glass jars and eliminating one-use plastic that is often used at grocery stores.

Up-cycle Goods in Your Retirement Home Apartment

To reduce waste and support sustainable practices at your senior living community in Portland, try upcycling some home goods or clothing. If you have a piece of clothing that has worn down over the years, practice some sewing skills to make the clothing “new” again. This is a great way to incorporate some creativity into your day and make something you feel proud of. Likewise, sprucing up old furniture or home goods can bring a second life to your favorite items. Instead of throwing away something that can easily be fixed, indulge in some quick remedies to bring the item back to new.

How Walking Can Enhance Senior Lifestyle in Senior Living

December 06, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

Exercise is essential for seniors in retirement, as it can provide a variety of physical, mental, and emotional benefits. Walking is a gentle form of exercise that keeps the body moving and healthy. A daily short walk has plenty of benefits for seniors in retirement homes. While exploring the amenities in your senior living community in Portland, be sure to take advantage of all the opportunities for relaxing walks. Keep reading to learn how walking can enhance senior lifestyle in senior living.

Daily Movement

Moving our bodies daily is important. Especially for seniors who struggle with decreased mobility, chronic illnesses, or are in need of assisted living care. Taking short walks daily is a great way to battle ailments and can help with emotional regulation. Walking releases endorphins, which boost your mood and can help reduce feelings of depression and anxiety. Getting fresh air daily is a great way to feel connected with the outside world and to help your body feel its best.

Weight Management

Aging can prevent seniors from being as active as they once were. As muscle mass decreases, it may not be safe for seniors to participate in high-intensity workouts. This may lead to more sedentary lifestyles and increased weight gain. For seniors who want to make healthier changes to their routines, taking a daily walk is a good start. Daily walks increase blood flow and encourage metabolism. A healthy metabolism goes hand-in-hand with weight management.

Staying Social

Seniors can experience some of the most social retirement homes Portland has to offer. With great outdoor amenities and tolerable summers, seniors enjoy taking walks outside with their family, friends, and neighbors. Courtyards, fireside patios, walking trails, and community gardens all allow seniors to stay active while socializing with the people they care about most.
