Sustainable Practices in Senior Living Communities

December 11, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

Green living is a popular trend among communities. In recent years, senior living retirement homes have followed in the footsteps of establishments transitioning to a more sustainable way of living. Retirement homes in Portland are aware of the importance of sustainable practices and know that there is an increasing popularity amongst residents for clean living.

One of the most influential things any senior living community can do is educate residents and caregivers about green practices and how to incorporate sustainability into their daily lives. Keep reading to explore some sustainable practices seniors can begin utilizing in their senior living communities at MorningStar.

Reducing Waste in Assisted Living and Retirement Homes Portland

Trash from plastic and one-use products leads to an abundance of waste on the planet. This waste pollutes waterways, natural ecosystems, and reduces the curb appeal of neighborhoods and cities. Plus, much of this waste cannot decompose for many, many years. That being said, seniors can find the most empathetic senior living Portland has to offer that encourages reducing waste within the communities. Seniors in retirement living at MorningStar in Portland can practice reducing waste in their senior living apartments by reusing glass jars and eliminating one-use plastic that is often used at grocery stores.

Up-cycle Goods in Your Retirement Home Apartment

To reduce waste and support sustainable practices at your senior living community in Portland, try upcycling some home goods or clothing. If you have a piece of clothing that has worn down over the years, practice some sewing skills to make the clothing “new” again. This is a great way to incorporate some creativity into your day and make something you feel proud of. Likewise, sprucing up old furniture or home goods can bring a second life to your favorite items. Instead of throwing away something that can easily be fixed, indulge in some quick remedies to bring the item back to new.

How Walking Can Enhance Senior Lifestyle in Senior Living

December 06, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

Exercise is essential for seniors in retirement, as it can provide a variety of physical, mental, and emotional benefits. Walking is a gentle form of exercise that keeps the body moving and healthy. A daily short walk has plenty of benefits for seniors in retirement homes. While exploring the amenities in your senior living community in Portland, be sure to take advantage of all the opportunities for relaxing walks. Keep reading to learn how walking can enhance senior lifestyle in senior living.

Daily Movement

Moving our bodies daily is important. Especially for seniors who struggle with decreased mobility, chronic illnesses, or are in need of assisted living care. Taking short walks daily is a great way to battle ailments and can help with emotional regulation. Walking releases endorphins, which boost your mood and can help reduce feelings of depression and anxiety. Getting fresh air daily is a great way to feel connected with the outside world and to help your body feel its best.

Weight Management

Aging can prevent seniors from being as active as they once were. As muscle mass decreases, it may not be safe for seniors to participate in high-intensity workouts. This may lead to more sedentary lifestyles and increased weight gain. For seniors who want to make healthier changes to their routines, taking a daily walk is a good start. Daily walks increase blood flow and encourage metabolism. A healthy metabolism goes hand-in-hand with weight management.

Staying Social

Seniors can experience some of the most social retirement homes Portland has to offer. With great outdoor amenities and tolerable summers, seniors enjoy taking walks outside with their family, friends, and neighbors. Courtyards, fireside patios, walking trails, and community gardens all allow seniors to stay active while socializing with the people they care about most.

Important Healthy Aging Tips: for Seniors in Senior Living

December 01, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

It is no secret that seniors and their families worry about their health. With aging comes increased healthcare concerns, like diabetes and memory loss. Seniors living alone may experience heightened anxiety around health concerns. The good news is that adopting and maintaining a few key behaviors can help older adults live longer, healthier lives. Seniors can find the best senior living Portland has to offer at MorningStar Retirement Homes.

Regular Social Engagement

Seniors need regular social engagement to feel fulfilled and stay healthy. Loneliness and isolation can lead to depression, poor eating habits, and contempt for your surroundings. You can find regular social engagement in senior living communities near you. MorningStar Senior Living offers active senior living arrangements with predictable budgeting and amenities everyone can enjoy.

Healthy Eating Options

Seniors in need of assisted living or seniors adjusting to changes in their everyday lives may struggle with eating healthy foods and meals. If a senior is living alone, they may no longer feel inclined to cook for themselves, leading to excess snacking, quick meals, and fast food. Senior living communities in Portland encourage healthy eating options. Executive chefs at MorningStar offer the best food for senior living Portland has to offer.

Rest and Relaxation

When seniors are taking care of a home, family matters, errands, and chores, it leaves very little time to actually enjoy retirement and aging. Rest and relaxation are important parts of a healthy living lifestyle. Seniors can find the most relaxing retirement homes Portland can offer for seniors looking for companionship and luxury-style living

Before senior living, seniors remark on how busy their lives used to be. Living in their home or with family, these seniors didn’t have time to fully enjoy the things they loved. In senior living, you can make time for exercise, daily walks, swimming, hiking, and working out. Retirees in senior living Portland can enjoy access to dedicated exercise rooms and gyms, providing the perfect environment to pursue their health goals.

Gardening

Gardening can seem daunting for seniors who are already balancing chores, errands, and changes in mobility. Seniors in Portland retirement homes experience gardening as not just a hobby, but a therapeutic and fulfilling experience. Gardening and community-maintained gardens allow seniors in senior living Portland to nurture vibrant flower beds and vegetable gardens in a supportive and nurturing environment that is free of worry.

Board Games

It is hard to justify a board game night when your life is full of errands and chores around the house. Many residents in senior living Portland enjoy playing board games and hosting game nights together. The lively comradery seniors experience in senior living by playing easygoing games and activities makes life more fulfilling and exciting.

Finding a Gift for an Elderly Parent or Grandparent

October 27, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

Trying to find thoughtful gifts for an elderly parent or grandparent can be a challenge. If they live in a senior living community that provides for many of their needs or an apartment without much extra space, they probably do not need anything that takes up a lot of room or already has it.

This is where it helps to be creative, and remember gifts of your time often mean the most to an elderly person. However, there are some good gift ideas you may not have thought about and would be appreciated by your loved one. One idea for a mom or dad who loves coffee but doesn’t want to brew a whole pot is a single-serve coffee maker. Add in a few boxes of single-serve cups to use with the maker including hot chocolate or flavored coffees in a selection they would enjoy.

If they haven’t gotten a smart speaker such as an Amazon Echo yet, it can make a great gift for someone with mobility challenges as it is voice operated. They can play music, answer questions, read the news, check the weather, set alarms, control compatible smart home devices, and more. To get them started, put together a cheat sheet of verbal commands they can use.

Other ideas include a heated massage pillow to relieve neck and back pain or a sleep sound machine to help with a good night’s sleep. A gift basket filled with their favorite treats or products to pamper themselves with like fancy soaps, lotions and a couple of pairs of non-skid fuzzy socks are always appreciated. Another hit would be a recordable book from the grandkids.

For outstanding assisted living, San Jose area seniors and their families are encouraged to consider MorningStar. Our all-inclusive community offers a range of luxury amenities, while providing all the warmth and welcoming comforts of home. Every suite is well designed to maximize space and options include studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom floorplans. Residents enjoy our five-star dining, salon, fitness center, theater, bistro and scheduled transportation as well as signature wellness programs and activities. The Benefits of Gentle Exercising for Seniors

October 13, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

Exercise is essential to keep seniors healthy in retirement. Regular exercise provides a variety of physical, mental, and emotional benefits for seniors in assisted living. Senior living that offers a modern fitness center and pool for residents encourages a healthy and full life for seniors. Regular exercise can help seniors maintain their muscle strength and mobility, which can help them stay independent and active. Exercise can also help seniors maintain a healthy weight, reduce their risk of chronic diseases, and even improve their mood.

MorningStar at Laurelhurst is a senior living community that offers a fitness center with a variety of equipment. At this senior living community, you can find high-intensity machines such as treadmills, weight machines, and stationary bikes that are safe for seniors. These workouts are great, but gentle exercise is just as beneficial for seniors who experience physical difficulties.

What is Gentle Exercise?

Gentle exercise, or low-impact exercise, includes a range of chair yoga, stretching, walking, and mobility exercises. Being healthy and active doesn’t have to include pushing your body to its limit. Sometimes, all seniors need to be active is intentional stretching and regular movement.

Practice Yoga for Your Body and Your Mind

October 09, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

While practitioners have known for centuries the calmness and peace yoga brings into their lives, science has finally caught up with real evidence of its benefits to our brains. Studies show yoga elevates levels of the brain chemical gamma-aminobutyric acid (GAGA), which helps regulate nerve activity and is associated with better mood and decreased anxiety.

The Harvard Medical School journal writes, “Yoga strengthens parts of the brain that play a key role in memory, attention, awareness, thought, and language. Think of it as weightlifting for the brain.” Their evidence comes from several studies that used MRI and other brain imaging technology. Researchers found participants who practiced yoga regularly had a thicker cerebral cortex, the part of the brain responsible for learning and memory, than participants who did not practice yoga.

This could be significant because as people age, this is one of the areas in the brain that typically shrinks. As the older yoga practitioners had less shrinkage than non-practitioners, researchers say it suggests yoga can “counteract age-related declines in memory and other cognitive skills.”

Other benefits of yoga include helping individuals lose weight, sleep better, lower blood pressure and lower blood sugar levels to improve diabetes. It also helps people gain flexibility and muscle strength around arthritic joints and reduces the pain associated with the condition.

At MorningStar of Idaho Falls, our vibrant 55+ community offers a whole host of amenities and care services as well as wellness programs that include exercises geared toward our residents. Downsizing Help for Seniors Moving to Senior Living

September 25, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

Downsizing is stressful and emotional for anyone moving. For seniors moving to a retirement community, it is important to take the right steps to downsize your parent or loved one’s home. MorningStar’s new senior living community in Portland provides families with the resources they need to begin downsizing and falling in love with their new senior living community.

A True Home to Comfortably Age in Place

Before beginning to declutter and pack, be mindful of the size and floor plan of your loved one’s new apartment. MorningStar at Laurelhurst offers unrivaled assisted living Portland seniors are sure to favor. Offering inspired retirement living, our community is situated in the historic Laurelhurst District where long-time residents can continue to comfortably live in familiar surroundings or near loved ones. MorningStar’s 5-story, 146,000 square feet building offers 83 assisted living suites and 32 suites devoted to the care of those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.

Basic Downsizing Tips for Seniors

It’s likely your new living space in a senior living community will not compare to a 3 bedroom home. This is why downsizing is truly important.

  1. Clear the clutter. Over time, we accumulate an excess of items and typical clutter. Take the time to go through old paper work, clothing, and unused items that have been held onto and stashed away. Clearing the clutter will allow you to focus on deciding what items and memorabilia you want to bring with you to senior living.

  2. Familiarity helps us adjust. Families might be tempted to sell everything in their senior loved one’s home when preparing to move to a retirement home. While this seems easy, it may cause distress later. Certain items hold sentimental value to us. Take your parents or loved one into account when deciding what furniture or household items to keep. Many senior living communities advocate for seniors to bring their own furniture and decoration. Being surrounded by familiar home goods makes seniors feel more comfortable and relaxed.

Make Changes in Your Behaviors and Attitudes for a Happier, Longer Life

September 08, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

It is never too late to improve our health and making changes in our behaviors and attitudes can mean living a happier, longer life. Doctors say getting your weight under control, quitting smoking, eating more fruits and vegetables, and exercising can all significantly improve your health and longevity at any age.

Remember taking care of our health also includes our brains. Experts used to believe the brain could not make new neuron connections as we aged but research now shows the “brain remains nimble and capable of physical change and growth throughout life.” In fact, studies find people who step out of their comfort zone and try new hobbies and interests can improve their cognitive health.

Another misconception is thinking it is too late to start exercising or to lose weight. A meta-analysis of 39 studies on aging and resistance-type exercises such as lifting weights or using exercise bands, found it is possible to build muscle mass no matter what age. In the studies,  “1,300 adults over the age of 50 who did some form of this kind of training, muscle mass increased by an average of nearly 2.5 pounds in just five months.”

Being positive is a trait that helps people deal more effectively with stress and worry and is linked to longevity. Researchers also find it is better for us to be in charge of our own medical care. One way to do this is to stay up-to-date on medical research and advice regarding care options as well as asking pertinent questions of our healthcare providers. Other things we can do to protect our health are to get appropriate screenings and tests, use our time productively and stay socially engaged.

MorningStar of Idaho Falls is a 55+ community that offers seniors a lifestyle of comfort, wellbeing and as much or as little social engagement as you want. Our range of onsite amenities, care services, wellness programs and activities are designed for stress-free retirement years. Please contact us for pricing and availability on unsurpassed senior living at MorningStar.

MorningStar takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003.  We believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless; and we act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof. In doing so, we can evaluate when a senior’s needs or interests change abruptly. If a resident who loves gardening no longer cares to water their plants in the community garden, we can assess if a senior’s mental health is hindered in some way.

Balanced and Nutritious Meals

Seniors in need of assisted living care often stop cooking for themselves in their own homes. This can lead to malnutrition, excessive weight loss or weight gain, vitamin deficiencies, and other health concerns. Our executive chefs at MorningStar offer the healthiest options senior living Portland, OR, has seen. A healthy diet rich in vegetables, minerals, good fats, and protein supports brain function and overall well-being.

Learn More About Identity Theft

August 16, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

Identity theft is the illegal use of a person’s Social Security number, credit card or other personal information to commit a crime. According to a report from Javelin Strategy & Research, identity fraud cost 40 million Americans a combined $43 billion in 2022. While this figure was $9 billion less than 2021, financial service providers and consumers should be as vigilant as ever about protecting personal identifying information.

Although financial institutions are doing what they can to protect our personal information from those who wish to fraudulently use it, we can also take steps to protect ourselves. The first tip is to never give your bank account and Social Security numbers to people over the phone. Many scammers claim to be from your bank or a government entity and tell the person they are trying to protect them, when in fact they are doing the opposite. Remember the Social Security office or your bank is not going to call you and ask for your number.

Another way to prevent identity theft is to not reply to phishing emails. These types of emails or text messages can contain official looking logos and promise free services or goods, lottery prizes or government grants. Others may tell you there is a problem with your bank or another company and they need information to settle the account. AARP says the security company, Valimail estimates 3.4 billion fake emails are sent out every day worldwide.

The US Government Office of Justice Programs says in the event of having your identity stolen:

Place a fraud alert on your credit report.

  • Close out accounts that have been tampered with or opened fraudulently.

  • Report the identity theft to the Federal Trade Commission.

  • File a report with your local police department.

They recommend keeping a log of all your correspondence and actions taken to report the incident. This should include dates, names and phone numbers of who you contacted or reported the thief to as well as sending documents via certified mail. Keep a record of any expenses incurred in case you are entitled to restitution when the responsible party is caught.

Muscle Loss in Seniors

August 14, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

The term sarcopenia refers to age-related muscle loss and is a natural part of growing older. However, it also may occur at a faster pace after prolonged periods of inactivity from injury, illness or the pain of osteoarthritis. Sarcopenia causes muscle atrophy and brings on problems such as poor balance and greater weakness, which in turn, can result in more inactivity and increased risks for falls.

Seniors with muscle atrophy may have difficulty reaching their arms upward, opening jars, typing on a keyboard or even tying shoes. The Journal of Rehabilitation Medicine reports on a study that found “older men who did eight weeks of strength training lost about 25% of their muscle gains after they stopped training for two weeks.”

Jodi Klein, a physical therapist with Harvard's Brigham and Women's Hospital, suggests a few things you can do if you know you have a surgical procedure ahead of you that could cause muscle atrophy. She says if you are currently active, keep it up; if not, use this time to get started. Klein explains, "The better shape you are in going into surgery, the better shape you will be coming out, and the less chance you have of enduring muscle loss."

Older adults who want to regain muscle strength should talk to their health care provider about the best methods. Experts recommend an exercise routine that builds both upper and lower body strength. This could include weight training with dumbbells and resistance bands in conjunction with walking, swimming, and biking. If it would be helpful, think about turning to an expert to aid you in regaining strength.

At MorningStar at West San Jose, scheduled to open soon, we will provide seniors carefree retirement years with a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community. Downsizing for the Move to a Senior Community

August 07, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

If you are moving from your own home into an independent or assisted living community, most likely you will want to downsize. While it can sound overwhelming to go through a whole household of stuff and whittle it down to fit into a modest sized apartment, a few tips will help.

Without question it is a lot of work and can be stressful and emotional but the Internet offers useful information from organizing experts. Most say the trick is to prepare in advance by making a plan and allowing plenty of time. Remember, if you are interested, there are companies who offer these services and will do everything from helping with the downsizing process to packing up, and moving your things to your new home.

Now you are ready for the sorting out process deciding what you will bring and what to give to family, donate, or throw away. This is the hardest task as your house is full of memories but again here is where a system works. Experts say sort by rooms and simplify the task by making a “yes” pile and a “no” pile. They warn not to make a “maybe” pile as it can end up growing in size and complicate your plan. Again, remember the goal is to simplify your life and not overcrowd the new place with useless items.

Things to consider are the size of your new place and its layout (get measurements). You will want furniture scaled to fit as well as room for hobbies or musical instruments that are important to you. Also consider the amenities your new place offers such as a dining service. If most of your meals will be prepared by your new community, you will just need the basics in your kitchen. If the new place has a fitness center, there is no need to bring your own equipment.

Good Nutrition is Especially Important to the Wellbeing of Seniors

August 03, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

The government first published nutritional recommendations in 1941, which became known as the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDAs). At the time, recommendations were more concerned with ensuring the population “as a whole was adequately fed and free from scurvy, rickets and other wartime diseases of malnutrition.” These early guidelines did not address long-term issues such as heart disease and diabetes.

Since then, we have learned we need to focus on maintaining good nutritional habits well into our senior years to avoid or mitigate our risk for chronic diseases. One example is type 2 diabetes, which occurs when the body’s muscle, fat and liver cells stop responding well to insulin resulting in consistently high blood sugar. Doctors say type 2 diabetes can be caused by too much sugar and refined-carbohydrates in our diet, and to lessen our risk, we should maintain a healthy weight and minimize blood-sugar spikes as well as add more fiber to our diet.

Another thing older adults should be aware of is muscle loss. Along with resistance training, weightlifting, Pilates, and yoga, nutritionists say to maintain strength we need to include protein in our diet. Christine Ritchie, director of research for the division of palliative care and geriatric medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, says older adults’ diet should include more protein than when they were younger. A man in his 50s needs “about 25 to 30 grams at each meal (like a medium chicken breast or burger, a 5-ounce can of tuna mixed with mayo, 2 cups of cooked rice and beans, or a cup of low-fat cottage cheese).”

Government dietary guidelines report that we burn approximately 200 fewer daily calories after age 50, so if you keep eating like you did in your thirties or forties, you will probably gain weight. Also, as bone loss starts sometime in our early thirties and continues into old age, seniors should consume foods with calcium and vitamin D. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons recommends 1,200 milligrams a day of calcium for women and 1,000 mg for men. Additionally, eat fruits and vegetables in a bright range of colors for heart-protecting antioxidants.

At MorningStar Senior Living of Idaho Falls, we recognize that good nutrition is especially important to the wellbeing of seniors. Our meals are created by our Executive Chef and prepared largely from scratch and feature the freshest ingredients from high-quality producers, locally sourced when possible. We also focus on foods known to support brain health which contain a high concentration of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds. Another Reason Oral Health is Important

July 26, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

Researchers at Tuft University reported a link between gum disease, also known as periodontitis and periodontal disease, to an increased risk for Alzheimer’s disease. Periodontitis is a bacterial infection within the soft tissue of the mouth, and “about 47.2% of U.S. adults over 30 and 70% over 65 have gum disease,” according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The study, which was done with mice, discovered the correlation, but researchers hope the findings can be used to someday help reduce cases of Alzheimer’s disease. The authors cite Fusobacterium nucleatum (F. nucleatum), a bacterium that causes gum disease and is already linked to kidney disease, diabetes and coronary problems to be the problem.

The lead author, Dr. Jake Jinkun Chen, professor of periodontology and director of the Division of Oral Biology at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine explains the purpose of the study is to identify and characterize the association of induced periodontal disease with Alzheimer’s disease. He says as F. nucleatum generates “inflammation both locally and systemically, it affects the Alzheimer’s disease phenotype, as Alzheimer’s itself is an inflammatory disease.” Additionally, since the bacteria migrate and penetrate the brain, it can worsen the symptoms and signs of Alzheimer’s disease.

Researchers plan further studies in humans and say although there is not a proven link yet; good oral health benefits our overall health. They also say to decrease our risk for Alzheimer’s, it is important to maintain a healthy diet and exercise.

As Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases progress, a loved one may need more care than they can get living at home. When the time comes for memory care, we encourage you to consider MorningStar at West San Jose, a senior living community offering specialized care for individuals with memory impairment diseases. Our holistic approach is guided by our signature program, Lavender Sky, and we help residents and their families navigate this challenging journey with love and compassion.
