Improve Your Health and Longevity

July 21, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

It is never too late to improve our health and making changes in our behaviors and attitudes can mean living a happier, longer life. Doctors say getting your weight under control, quitting smoking, eating more fruits and vegetables, and exercising can all significantly improve your health and longevity at any age.

Remember taking care of our health also includes our brains. Experts used to believe the brain could not make new neuron connections as we aged but research now shows the “brain remains nimble and capable of physical change and growth throughout life.” In fact studies find that people, who step out of their comfort zone and try new hobbies and interests, can improve their cognitive health.

Another misconception is thinking it is too late to start exercising or to lose weight. A meta-analysis of 39 studies on aging and resistance-type exercises such as lifting weights or using exercise bands, found it is possible to build muscle mass no matter what age. In the studies,  “1,300 adults over the age of 50 who did some form of this kind of training, muscle mass increased by an average of nearly 2.5 pounds in just five months.”

Being positive is a trait that helps people deal more effectively with stress and worry and is linked to longevity. Researchers also find it is better for us to be in charge of our own medical care. One way to do this is to stay up-to-date on medical research and advice regarding care options as well as asking pertinent questions of our healthcare providers. Other things we can do to protect our health is to get appropriate screenings and tests, use our time productively and stay socially engaged.

MorningStar at West San Jose is a 55+ community that offers seniors a lifestyle of comfort, wellbeing and social engagement. Our range of onsite amenities, care services, wellness programs and activities are designed for stress-free retirement years. Receive the Care You Need at MorningStar’s New Community in San Jose

July 19, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

Does your elderly mom or dad dismiss the idea of assisted living fearing it would end their independence and life as they know it? Do they think assisted living homes are more like nursing homes of the past? We want to reassure you and your senior loved one that assisted living communities such as MorningStar at West San Jose are not nursing homes. In fact, we do not offer skilled nursing services but rather provide assistance with the ADLs (activities of daily living), along with engaging activities and other services intended to improve and enhance quality of life.

It is important to a senior’s overall health that they receive proper care as the website Aging.com reports, “Functional status and the ability to care for oneself have a significant impact on a senior’s quality of life. Unmet needs for help with activities of daily living can lead to malnutrition, poor personal hygiene, isolation, illnesses like urinary tract infections (UTIs), and falls.” In fact, studies show seniors getting assistance with the ADLs allows them to feel like they are in control of their life again and helps them regain a sense of self-worth and purpose.

At MorningStar at West San Jose, we know seniors have a lot to offer and the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless. We act upon this truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof. Our beautiful new community will offer 69 stylish suites for assisted living in a variety of floorplans. In addition, the Reflections Neighborhood will provide 34 suites devoted to the individualized care of residents with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.

We will also offer respite care for those recovering from surgery or an illness, as well as short-term stays from one week up to a full month to see if we are a good fit. Please contact us or visit our website for more information about trusted senior living in San Jose.

Learn More About Age-related Macular Degeneration

July 14, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

Just as the rest of our body ages, so do our eyes. Older adults often complain of dry, teary or tired eyes and may have problems driving at night, experience flashes and floaters or need glasses to read. As we grow older, we are also at a higher risk for serious eye diseases that can impact our vision.

One of the most common and serious eye diseases is age-related macular degeneration which is a leading cause of vision loss among people aged 50 and older. The American Macular Degeneration Foundation reports age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is more common than cataracts and glaucoma combined. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention projects by 2050 the number of older Americans with the disease will nearly double from 48 million to 88 million.

Age-related macular degeneration causes the macula, a part of the back of the eye near the retina, to deteriorate. Experts say while it doesn’t impact peripheral vision, macular degeneration can affect how well a person sees what’s right in front of them.

You are at a higher risk of getting AMD if a relative has had it or you are Caucasian, and females are more susceptible to AMD than males. Lifestyle choices also increase your risk for AMD including smoking along with elevated blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Sun exposure is another risk factor and doctors recommend wearing sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat. Maintaining a healthy diet by eating foods high in antioxidants like lutein found in green, leafy vegetables such as spinach are beneficial for our eye health.

Symptoms of AMD include visual distortions and can make straight lines appear bent, reduce central vision in one or both eyes, increase blurriness of printed words, and the need for brighter light when reading or doing close-up work. The first signs of AMD are typically discovered by an eye doctor during an annual dilated eye exam.

Make the Most of Your Next Doctor Visit

June 21, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

Have you had the experience of walking to your car after a doctor’s visit and a question pops into your mind you wished you had asked the doctor? You are not alone. In fact, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), a division of the U.S. Dept. of Human Health & Services, reminds all of us about the benefit of preparing questions and accurate information ahead of time to provide to your physician. They say it not only improves your care, but builds trust between you and your healthcare provider, which can lead to better results.

For help on questions to ask to facilitate a more fruitful visit to your doctor and efficiently use your precious time (studies show doctors spend between 13 to 24 minutes with each patient), the AHRQ offers a series of questionnaires related to your visit. Remember typically you have a reason for the visit such as: a well visit, looking for answers for a specific medical problem, returning to discuss treatment, or getting test results. Prepare for your appointment by bringing your prescription medications as well as over-the-counter drugs you use including vitamins and dietary or herbal supplements.

When discussing a possible medical procedure, AHRQ says questions should include: why do I need this procedure; how do I prepare; when will I get the results; and how will I feel afterward? If surgery is recommended, ask if there are alternative treatments available that are just as effective; possible complications; and recovery period. AHRQ says if you are given a new medication, ask how the new drug will interact with other drugs you are taking, how long you will be on it, and common side effects. Before you leave your appointment, make sure you understand your instructions.

Specialized Care for Those With Dementia

June 16, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

When a loved one is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia, families must face the question of what the future will hold. For many a specifically designed memory care community will be the answer as it offers an environment focused on improving quality of life and keeping the resident safe.

A Place for Mom, a senior living referral website and information service, explains dementia care, also called memory care, is different from other senior care communities and features services such as 24-hour care, trained staff, memory-enhancing therapies, physical layouts that reduce confusion, a secure environment, and more. Moreover, as Alzheimer’s disease is progressive, a memory care home is equipped to care for a person from the onset to the most advanced stages.

Many of the behaviors and symptoms that develop as the disease progresses such as disorientation, confusion and aggression can be difficult for families to handle on their own. At memory care communities, the staff is experienced in managing these types of behaviors and uses specialized techniques to calm or stimulate as situations call for. In addition, a move to a memory community can reduce stress for family caregivers as caring for a loved one with dementia is often a full-time job and family members generally have other responsibilities.

Another benefit of memory care homes is the controlled environment which helps reduce confusion and disorientation for residents with proper lighting, clearly marked hallways, and a décor to encourage calmness and familiarity. Also, outside doors are locked to prevent wandering, allowing the inside atmosphere to safely encourage independence.

MorningStar at West San Jose is honored to offer this type of comprehensive memory care in our Reflections Neighborhood. We provide support to our residents and their families with the kind of services, wellness programs and activities essential to quality of life. Our approach to memory care is encompassed under the expanse of possibilities we call Lavender Sky and uses a broad range of Montessori-based therapy techniques. Contact us for more information about trusted memory care at MorningStar.

June is National Safety Month

June 12, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

Seniors are especially vulnerable to falls, burns, and poisonings and many of these accidents happen in the home. This is why experts recommend using a safety checklist such as the one the CDC publishes, A Home Fall Prevention Checklist for Older Adults. It points out the problems and provides solutions.

In addition, experts say if you have balance problems, you may want to get a fall risk assessment from your healthcare provider. They can give you tips to help improve balance along with suggestions on how to protect yourself from falls. Recommendations include wearing non-slip footwear on smooth floors, and if you need a cane or walker to remain steady on your feet, use it rather than relying on holding on to furniture and walls.

Keep hallways and stairways free of clutter, make sure they are well-lit, and use the banister rail when going up or down stairs. If you do have area rugs, tape the edges down so they do not create a trip-hazard or use ones with non-skid backing. It is important to get annual eye examinations to check for problems, and update glasses as needed.

Other suggestions include setting your water heater’s thermostat no higher than 120 degrees to prevent scalding yourself. Install grab bars in the bathtub and near the toilet and place a rubber mat in the bottom of the tub. Store medications safely and dispose of expired and unused medications. Install nightlights in the bedroom, bathroom and hallways.

HOW TO MANAGE ARTHRITIS AS A SENIOR

May 31, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

As we age, arthritis becomes one of the most common ailments that we have to manage. The medical condition impacts more than 60 million adults, with most cases developing in older adults. As the most common type of arthritis, osteoarthritis results from the wear and tear inflicted on joints throughout the body. At our senior living facility in Portland, Oregon, caregivers educate our guests on how to recognize the signs of arthritis, as well as take steps to manage the painful medical condition.

In addition to the wear and tear on joints that is part of the aging process, other factors can influence the development of arthritis symptoms. Obesity is a common cause of arthritis, as the joints have to support much more weight. A history of joint injuries, especially ones that develop symptoms as the result of contact sports, also plays a role in causing osteoarthritis. Family history plays a role, as well as overusing joints as the result of repetitive movements.

How to Manage Arthritis

A healthcare provider cannot cure arthritis, but seniors should follow a few tips that alleviate pain and other troublesome symptoms.

Exercise

It seems counterintuitive to exercise the same joints that generate pain and stiffness, but certain low-impact exercises such as walking, cycling, and tai chi loosen the joints to improve flexibility. Always consult with your physicians before starting a new exercise regimen. Take it slow at the beginning of an exercise program, and then adjust the intensity according to how your joints respond.

Heat and Cold Therapies

The American College of Rheumatology recommends heat therapy because it relaxes joints and muscles. Heat enlarges blood vessels, which translates into a higher blood flow rate that delivers much-needed nutrients to joints. Applying a heating pad directly on the area of pain is an effective treatment method, as is warming up the entire body by taking a hot bath or swimming in a heated pool.

Inflamed joints benefit from cold therapies, such as applying a cold pack on the area where pain has developed.

Control Weight

We already mentioned the negative impact that obesity has on the joints. Controlling weight represents an effective preventive measure that mitigates or even eliminates the symptoms that are associated with arthritis. One of the keys to controlling weight concerns adopting a more nutritious diet, such as eating more antioxidant fruits and leafy vegetables. Controlling weight places less stress on joints, which increases mobility and prevents additional injuries.

Medical Treatments

Over-the-counter medications such as arthritis creams and oral pain relievers can help reduce the painful symptoms of osteoarthritis. For more serious arthritis cases, surgery might be the only viable strategy to manage arthritis as a senior. Osteotomy, which removes a small piece of bone to relieve joint pressure, is a common surgical procedure to help seniors manage arthritis symptoms.

Managing arthritis can be a challenge for seniors that live on their own. Receiving daily care at an assisted living facility in Portland ensures a loved one lives a healthier lifestyle. MorningStar senior housing facilities across the United States have earned the reputation for passionately serving seniors. Connect with MorningStar at Laurelhurst to learn more about why we operate the best senior housing facility in Portland, Oregon.

When Should a Senior Stop Driving?

May 24, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

From time to time, we hear news stories about elderly people causing serious car accidents due to negligence. This typically reignites the on-going debate about “when is it time for a senior to stop driving?” Also, it is important to keep in mind that seniors are more likely to be injured in an accident as well as more likely to die from their injuries.

Obviously being told you should no longer drive is a very sensitive topic for an elderly person still driving. To them, it represents more than just getting from one place to another but their independence and a way of life. So before you take away your elderly parent’s driving privileges, you should check that their driving is up to today’s road conditions.

The first thing you can do is to get in the car and take a ride with them. Experts say some driving issues signal serious problems while others less so. For instance if your loved one is confusing the gas pedal with the brake, this is serious and requires immediate action. Other things to look for are problems with left-hand turns, changing lanes, or driving either too fast or too slow. Once you are out of the car, check for signs of new scrapes and dents.

Many older adults realize their driving abilities are not what they used to be and make the decision on their own to stop driving at night or on freeways. They also will not drive on icy and snowy roads or in the rain. Some even make other adjustments such as not making left hand turns or avoiding busy roads with lots of lanes and traffic.

At MorningStar Assisted Living & Memory Care at West San Jose, we are happy to offer residents scheduled transportation along with many other amenities, wellness programs and activities. Medication Management is an Important Preventive Measure

May 17, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

Experts say medication management is an important preventive measure to avoid potential serious health hazards for seniors. As many older adults take multiple medications, vitamins, and supplements to treat different symptoms and health conditions, they are at a greater risk for medication mix-ups. Researchers estimate that 25 percent of people ages 65 to 69 take at least five prescription drugs to treat chronic conditions, a figure that jumps to nearly 46 percent for those between 70 and 79.

Polypharmacy is the regular use of five or more prescription medications, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report approximately 350,000 people are hospitalized each year due to adverse, or harmful, drug events. While these episodes are usually preventable, doctors acknowledge it can be confusing keeping track of daily dosages and special instructions such as to take with or without food or the time of day, etc.

If an elderly parent or grandparent is taking several medications, healthcare providers say it is a good idea to inquire about their medication management. One sign they may not be organized is if they have medications stored in different locations throughout the house, and old, outdated prescriptions are mixed in with current ones. You can start by gathering all medications in one place, remember it is best to store them in a cool, dry location, and set aside any outdated medications for proper disposal. Write down the names of the drugs, dosages, and if they see several doctors, who prescribed them. Also, include herbal supplements, multi-vitamins and over-the-counter drugs. Bring the list to the next visit to their primary care physician and ask why mom or dad is taking it, how long they will be on it, and do any medications present a dangerous interaction with another drug they are on.

MorningStar at West San Jose is a beautiful new senior living community offering assisted living and memory care. From healthy daily meals to wellness programs and activities, we have a whole range of services and resort-style amenities to ensure residents’ comfort and wellbeing. Say Goodbye to Restless Nights: Top Strategies to Promote Healthy Sleep in Seniors

May 15, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

Sleep is one of the most important parts of your day. As a senior, you likely need more sleep than you did when you were younger.

Sleep can get tricky when you have trouble falling asleep and staying asleep throughout the night. Here are some tips and tricks for getting restful, healthy amounts of sleep each night insenior living.

Get Plenty of Exercise During the Day

The more you move throughout the day, the better your quality of sleep will be. The science is clear: any type of physical activity will promote more restful sleep at night.

Movement doesn’t have to be strenuous or risky. You can simply take daily walks, go for a swim, or go on a bike ride with friends in your senior living community to get your daily movement in.

Once you curl up in bed for the night, you’ll likely notice that it’s easier to fall asleep and stay asleep.

Turn Off Screens Before Bedtime

Is your TV time affecting your sleep? There’s a good chance that it is.

Melatonin is an important sleep hormone that triggers feelings of drowsiness and helps you fall asleep quickly. Looking at screens that emit blue light (televisions, cell phones, etc.) before bedtime blocks melatonin production in your brain.

Turn off all of the screens in your home for at least one hour before you decide to go to sleep. This gives your body and brain time to wind down before bed.

Avoid Caffeine in the Afternoon

Coffee, tea, and soda usually contain caffeine in some form. Unfortunately, these delicious beverages are harming your sleep patterns.

Caffeine blocks feelings of sleepiness, making it harder to wind down and get some shut-eye. It also increases your heart rate and speeds up other body systems that are supposed to slow down during sleep.

If you drink caffeine after noon, your body is likely wired and awake at bedtime. Surprisingly, caffeine stays in your system for up to 17 hours after your last sip, making bedtime much more challenging.

In the afternoon, consider drinking juice or water instead of reaching for a caffeinated beverage.

Follow a Nightly Routine

Routine is key for those in senior living. Each day is an opportunity to incorporate structure and healthy habits into your life.

Following a consistent nighttime routine will help your brain and body recognize when it’s time to sleep. For example, you can spend one hour reading a book before bed to signal that it’s time for rest. After a few weeks, this will become second nature to you.

Remember that screens interfere with quality sleep, so try to avoid using them during your nightly wind-down time.

Healthy Sleep Means Healthy Seniors

Sleep is essential for good physical and mental health. Use this guide to protect your brain and body by getting plenty of quality sleep each night.

How Music Enhances Seniors’ Quality of Life

May 12, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

Music is a wonderful medium and tool with the power to connect people of different cultures, languages, and backgrounds every single day. When it comes to senior living, music can be healing and rejuvenating all at once.
With that being said, below are some key reasons why music is so powerful for seniors – and how you can use it to your benefit as well.

Music Lights Up Different Parts of Your Brain

Your brain uses different regions to process spoken language, printed text, and other sensory inputs. When you listen to music, lots of different brain regions spring to life at one time. In fact, when listening to any form of music, the part of your brain that controls emotions and feelings receives more blood flow!

Starting in infancy, humans benefit from exposure to music, so if you want a well-rounded, active brain long into your later years of life, regularly listening to music is the way to go!

Relating to Song Lyrics

Besides the health effects that music provides to the brain, listening is simply fun and soothing, too. Many people even determine their favorite songs because they relate to what the artists are describing, and that’s especially true for seniors. They might not be able to visit the people and places they once did, but music can connect them to all of the positive memories related to them.

Better Memory and Cognition
A major concern that many seniors have is keeping their brains active and healthy as they age. Memory problems and cognitive skills are at the forefront of most of these concerns, but the great news is that music has actually been shown to improve memory and cognition over time. Therefore, every time you listen to your favorite album, you’re infusing your brain with meaningful connections!

Some studies have even suggested that people in senior living with memory problems, like Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, have shown improvements after music therapy, possibly because of the brain regions involved in processing rhythm and song lyrics.

Music: A Creative Outlet for Relaxation and Stress Relief

When you’re feeling blue, stressed, or other negative emotions, it can be helpful to turn on some music. People of all ages benefit from using music as a healthy distraction and coping skill.
If you face lots of stress and anxiety in your life, music can be a great way to release that tension. Creative outlets like music, art, and theater have been shown to improve the mental health of most adults.

Furthermore, research has also shown that regular music in senior living reduces blood pressure, anxiety, and sleep problems in residents, which means there’s no easier way to enhance both your mental and physical health in your golden years than by turning on your favorite tunes!

Take Care of Yourself by Starting with Music

Senior living is a wonderful, enriching place to be, and if you want to enhance your living experience, try incorporating music into your daily life.

4 Potential Risks of Letting Seniors Live Alone

May 05, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

It’s understandable that aging adults want to keep their independence as long as possible. However, letting seniors live by themselves comes with many safety risks.

If you’reconsidering senior livingfor an older adult in your life, you’re putting their safety and well-being first. Here are some of the ways seniors living alone can go wrong.

1. Accidental Fires

Fires are a major concern for elderly adults living alone. If your loved one forgets to turn off an appliance or leaves a gas-powered item running for too long, it could turn into a tragedy.

There’s no way to know when or how your loved one might suffer from a lapse in memory or judgment. There are many potential fire hazards in traditional apartments and houses.

Senior living prevents fires by securing appliances, stoves, and other potential fire hazards. Your loved one would never have to worry about burning themselves or their belongings.

2. Slips, Falls, and Injuries

Falling is a common risk among the elderly population. As we age, we all become more vulnerable to bone fractures and mobility problems. This leads to increased risks of slipping, falling, and getting injured.

Bathtubs aren’t the only fall risk in a standard home. Kitchens, hardwood flooring in living rooms, and wet surfaces can cause slips and falls at any time.

If your loved one lives alone, they may not be able to reach a phone to call for help. Even worse, they could be knocked unconscious when they fall, which prevents help from arriving quickly.

Senior living communities are designed to accommodate a range of mobility levels. This prevents accidental falls and keeps seniors safe from injuries.

3. Wandering and Getting Lost

If memory problems strike, your loved one could be at risk of getting lost.

There are hundreds of incidents each year of seniors leaving their homes and wandering around, ending up lost. If they aren’t able to remember where they live or who to call for help, they could end up in serious danger.

Wandering is more common than you may know, and it can be fatal. If your loved one ends up in the presence of an unfriendly stranger, animal, or group of people, their safety will be severely compromised.

4. Loneliness and Depression

Seniors who live alone often struggle with depression and feelings of loneliness. They may not have contact with someone in person for multiple days or even weeks at a time.

To prevent loneliness, seniors should reside in communities that have their best interests in mind.

Protect Your Aging Loved One: Senior Living

Senior living communities prioritize the safety and security of seniors every day. If your loved one moves into senior living, you can have peace of mind knowing they are safe and cared for daily.

3 Expert Downsizing Tips for Seniors Making a Move to Senior Living

May 03, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

Ready to make the most exciting move of your life? Start here. This guide will help you figure out the best way to move into senior living. There are many parts to coordinate, and it can get overwhelming quickly. Don’t let your upcoming move stress you out. Follow these tips to make your senior living move go smoothly.

1. Organize Everything into Three Piles: Keep, Sell, or Throw Out

There’s a good “rule of threes” that you should follow before you move into senior living. Most of your possessions can be grouped into one of the following categories: keep, sell/donate, or throw out.
You won’t be able to take everything you own with you to your new home. However, you can make sure your items get put to good use after you move.

Sentimental objects and everyday staples will go into your “keep” pile. This pile can either go into storage or move with you into senior living.

Choosing whether to sell or donate depends on the objects in question. For example, clothing would be more useful to donate since most people won’t pay much for old garments.

On the other hand, if you have valuable antiques you need to part with, you can organize a sale. That way, you can make some extra cash and still give your items a new home.

For worn items without much value (sentimental or financial), you can throw them away. There’s nothing wrong with doing a major purge before you move.

2. Make Multiple Lists

When you’re deciding on what to put in your “keep” pile, it might be helpful to make multiple lists.

Write your first list to figure out what you want to keep or store as you move. Then, it would be beneficial to narrow the “keep” list down even more.

You likely won’t have as much space as you’re used to in senior living, and you might have to make some compromises with your items.

As you write these lists, you’ll come to realize which objects really belong with you and which can go. It might even help you come up with ideas for decorating your new place.

3. Start Downsizing Early

Don’t wait until the week before your move to start downsizing.

To avoid stress and frustration, you should start organizing and getting rid of unwanted items as soon as you decide to make the move. That way, you have plenty of time to get everything ready and make tough decisions about what to keep.

Have a Stress-Free Moving Experience

Moving to senior living is an exciting transition in your life. Don’t let the moving process wear you out; start downsizing as early as possible so you can relax once you move.

A Fun Activity To Do With Your Parent or Grandparent

April 24, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

If an elderly parent is in a senior living community and has limited mobility, you may feel it is difficult to think of things to talk about or to do when you visit.  Scrapbooking is an activity that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. Also, it can be more than just a means to pass the time and preserve memories for seniors but can be beneficial to them as well.

By organizing an activity such as scrapbooking, it can help to keep everyone engaged as well as inspire your loved one to start sharing stories about the “good old days.”  As you start documenting their life story, it will likely bring back memories they may have forgotten and/or ones the rest of the family knows nothing about.  Along with exercising the brain with recollections of the past, scrapbooking can boost self-esteem, improve one’s dexterity and increase socialization by introducing new topics of conversation.

To get started, visit your local craft store or shop on the Internet for scrapbooking supplies that will help you create a book that is uniquely your parent’s.  Your next step is to help gather and organize the photos and materials in chronological order that will go into the scrapbook.

If the project seems too overwhelming for your parent, have them pick a theme such as family vacations or weddings through the years, or do one that focuses on their childhood and early years.  Before you start to glue things in, take the time to layout the photos and mementos for each page; and most importantly, encourage and enjoy the stories and memories shared by your loved one.

5 Senior Living Myths You Can Ignore

March 27, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

There’s a lot of information about senior living available online and through word of mouth. Unfortunately, with that information comes misinformation as well.

You may have heard many myths surrounding senior living and its benefits for aging adults. Here are five rumors you should ignore when it comes to senior living and assistance:

1. Only Sick Elderly People Need Senior Living

Many people associate “senior living” with nursing homes and complete dependence on a caregiver. In reality, senior living enriches the lives of millions of seniors across the country each year.

Senior living accommodates all levels of physical and cognitive abilities and independence. You can be in perfect health and still enjoy the social and recreational activities provided in senior living communities.

2. Moving to Senior Living Means Giving Up Independence

Different senior living communities and facilities offer different levels of independence for aging adults. If you want to remain fully independent while still receiving support with daily living, senior living is for you!
It’s understandable to worry about losing your independence as you age. High-quality senior living communities offer annual resident assessments to make sure you get the level of care and independence that you need.

3. Senior Living Is Lonely and Boring

Many residents in senior living communities brag about how full and healthy their social lives are! Senior living is anything but boring.

Most communities host daily or weekly events like game nights, recreational sports, and group fitness classes. You will never run out of activities to enjoy in senior living.

Additionally, senior living communities encourage residents to socialize and form close bonds with others. You are never alone when you’re in senior living.

4. Your Loved Ones Will Forget About You

The aging process can bring about fears of being forgotten and left alone by your family members. Moving to senior living can seem especially scary since you won’t see your family every day.
In senior living, visits from loved ones are always encouraged. There may be set visiting hours, but you will have ample opportunities to spend time with the people you love the most.
If your loved ones can’t make it for a visit, you can still video chat, have a phone call, or text them daily. You won’t be forgotten just because you have moved into senior living.

5. You’ll Have to Follow a Strict Schedule Every Day

Senior living is a broad term that encompasses many different types of communities. However, independent and healthy aging adults can choose their own activities and solo time in almost all communities.
There are no strict schedules in senior living. Everything is tailored to your needs, and you have a say in your care plan.

Forget the Myths: Senior Living Means Thriving!
Senior living can be a wonderful enhancement to your life after retirement. Don’t spend your post-workforce years feeling lonely and bored. By choosing a senior living community, you can reach your full potential and enjoy the best of what the golden years have to offer!

4 Health Benefits of Daily Routines for Seniors

March 24, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

People of any age need a stable, consistent routine to thrive — including seniors. There are numerous health benefits to curating a routine that they participate in and enjoy.

You may not know that many seniors’ mental health is dependent on having consistency and routine in their lives. Here are four key benefits your loved one will enjoy by establishing a daily routine:

1. Reduced Stress

Aging adults may struggle with memory problems, cognitive impairment, and physical health issues. Having a daily routine will reduce their anxiety and stress since they will know what to expect.
Daily routines for seniors can improve a family caregiver’s mental health as well. When your loved one is happy and healthy, it is much easier to feel relaxed yourself.

2. A Sense of Independence

One of the most challenging aspects of aging is dealing with the reduced independence and autonomy that often accompanies it. A daily routine can provide anyone with an improved sense of control, which can be especially beneficial for seniors.

Feeling independent and in control when it comes to daily life is associated with improved mental health. This can be essential for seniors who are already having to become accustomed to changes in health and mobility brought on by aging.

In senior living, such as retirement homes or assisted living, independence is a strong value that the staff promotes with daily routines and residents’ participation in them.

3. Better Hygiene and Personal Care

If your loved one doesn’t have a daily routine, they may find it difficult to maintain their personal hygiene. It is essential for seniors to remain clean and comfortable to avoid skin problems.
Some habits to include in their daily routine include:

  • Brushing their teeth

  • Brushing their hair

  • Showering or bathing

  • Dressing in weather-appropriate clothing

  • Wearing deodorant

  • Applying lotion and face moisturizer

These simple habits can go a long way in making your loved one feel comfortable in their own skin. When they take care of their bodies, with or without assistance, they will feel better overall.

4. Improved Sleep

Sleep is one of the most important parts of your loved one’s daily routine as a senior.
Everyone needs adequate sleep to function properly throughout the day. Sleep helps with memory, critical thinking, and positive moods.

In aging adults, sleep is even more important. Research shows that sleep can have a protective effect against age-related health problems that affect the body and mind.

Implement a bedtime routine and make sure your loved one gets at least eight hours of quality sleep each night.

Improve Your Loved One’s Health with a Daily Routine

A daily routine can provide a wealth of benefits to anyone of any age. For seniors, these benefits can be instrumental in ensuring they enjoy continued health and reduced stress during the golden years.
Help yourself or your loved one thrive by partaking in a consistent daily routine!

4 Steps to Take Before Moving a Loved One into Senior Living

March 15, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Senior Living

Making the transition into senior living can be a delicate time for many older adults. When you are helping a senior family member or other loved one move into senior living, there are certain steps you should take to make the transition easier. Take a look at the four steps below:

1. Assess Their Physical Needs

Before moving your loved one into senior living, the first step is assessing their needs. Every person is unique and requires different types of assistance as they age. Some older adults can live independently with little to no daily assistance. These seniors are best suited for independent living communities.

Older adults with limited mobility, grave health concerns, or cognitive issues often require ongoing assistance with tasks like bathing, feeding, and more. These seniors benefit most from assisted living facilities with staff on-site around the clock to help.

2. Consider Medical Requirements

When assessing your loved one’s needs, it is important to consider any medical requirements they may have. Many seniors have serious health concerns that require ongoing, everyday medical care. These seniors may need skilled nursing assistance, memory care, or physical therapy.

Before moving them into any kind of senior living facility, ensure they can access the necessary medical services.

3. Look into Financial Options

Senior living can be a costly expense for many families. When helping a loved one transition into a senior living facility, you will need to take a thorough look at both their finances and those of anyone helping with payment. Make sure you choose an independent or assisted living facility your family can afford.

If you require financial assistance, there are many resources out there that can help with the costs of senior care. Make sure to look into these financial options so you can use every resource available to your family.

4. Help Prepare Their Belongings

A common concern for older adults transitioning into senior living is the ability to take their belongings. Depending on the type of community they are moving into, they may not be able to take everything from their home. This is especially true for seniors moving into assisted living.

You will want to help your loved one take inventory of their belongings and determine their most cherished and important items. You may also want to look into storage facilities that can hold onto any additional belongings they cannot keep with them but do not want to part with.

Transitioning into Senior Living

From assessing medical and physical needs to preparing their belongings, there are several important steps to take before moving a loved one into senior living. Taking these steps can help your senior family member get off to the best start when transitioning into assisted or independent living.
