Explore These Popular Holistic Wellness Programs in Assisted Living

February 21, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

The key to great whole-body health for seniors in assisted living care is to utilize holistic wellness and therapies. Holistic wellness aims to support seniors in multiple realms of their lives. At MorningStar, we understand that each senior is unique and has differing wants, interests and goals. Because of this, holistic wellness programs work to provide care for multiple needs in a senior’s life.

What is holistic wellness?

Holistic wellness programs in senior living assisted living care facilities address the physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being of residents. These programs often incorporate a variety of activities and programs to promote overall health and enhance the quality of life. Here are some popular holistic wellness programs that assisted living is incorporating in their senior living communities:

  1. Mindfulness and Meditation

Just like you or me, seniors experience feelings of frustration or overwhelm. Sometimes we need a break. Mindfulness and meditation practices encourage peace and relaxation for seniors in assisted living communities. This holistic method of care encourages breathing exercises and other activities to soothe seniors.

  2. Spiritual and Faith-Based Activities

Holistic wellness also includes spiritual and faith-based activities for seniors. Maintaining your relationship to faith, or rebuilding it, brings a sense of peace and belonging to many seniors in assisted living.

While MorningStar is founded on a Judeo-Christian tradition, we honor all faith systems and worldviews among our team members and residents. Our preeminent goal is to meet a resident’s social, emotional, physical and spiritual needs, all of which contribute to creating a comfortable home and offering truly compassionate care.

  3. Music Therapy

There is a lot of research to prove the benefits of music therapy for seniors. Music engages the part of our brain that holds memory and recognition. Working with music, whether listening to music or playing an instrument, helps seniors to recall memories and feelings that may have otherwise remained inaccessible.

How to Have an Active Lifestyle for Seniors in Assisted Living Care

February 19, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

It is no shock that there are numerous advantages to living an active lifestyle. For seniors, staying active is seriously important. Staying active doesn’t necessarily mean you have to run daily or go to the gym, however. An active senior lifestyle is anything that gets your body moving in whatever way is most beneficial to you. Using the stairs, taking more walks, or incorporating a few minutes of daily stretches are all beneficial changes seniors in assisted living can make to have a more active lifestyle in senior living assisted care.

There may be certain mobility or safety concerns that make participating in certain activities more difficult for seniors in assisted living. Below are a few examples of activities that encourage seniors in assisted care to move their bodies in easy, yet beneficial ways.

  1. Daily Walks

Perhaps one of the most valuable forms of exercise is walking. For many seniors, it may be difficult to walk long distances or for an extended period. Luckily, a few minutes of walking is still beneficial to seniors. If possible, use a walker or cane to walk throughout the halls of your community. With a partner or caretaker, short outdoor walks can be made safer and easier to complete.

  2. Stretching

Yoga is a deeply appreciated physical activity, but not everyone can move their body in that way as they age. However, stretching is still a great way to get more physical activity into your day. Chair yoga involves gentle stretches and poses performed while seated. It promotes flexibility, balance, and relaxation for many seniors with decreased mobility.

  3. Water Aerobics

If your health permits, water aerobics is a low-intensity workout that promotes great overall health for seniors. This workout helps with cardiovascular health, strength, and flexibility. Plus, many seniors rejoice in the freedom of joint pain from the water.

WHAT IS ASSISTED LIVING FOR SENIORS?

February 19, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

Relocating is one of the most stressful events in life. You have to become acclimated to new surroundings, as well as make new friends. Relocation turns into a more stressful event when the move consists of a new home with a different environment. Such is the case for residents of an assisted living facility. Part of the stress generated is caused by fear of the unknown. At our senior living center in Idaho Falls, our staff removes the veil called fear of the unknown by explaining what assisted living is for seniors.

What is Assisted Living?

According to the Administration for Community Living, nearly 60 percent of older adults in the United States can expect to live in some type of long-term care environment. Assisted living represents the most common type of long-term care living arrangement, but most people do not understand what defines this type of retirement community in Idaho Falls, Idaho.

An assisted living environment is an arrangement for older adults who want to remain as independent as possible, but require non-medical assistance and help with the activities associated with daily living. A licensed caregiver helps an assisted living resident with activities associated with daily living such as bathing, dressing, eating, and maintaining healthy hygiene. Assisted living residents typically pay a flat monthly fee for renting an apartment, as well as an additional fee that is calculated according to the level of care provided by the assisted living facility.

Assisted living residents have access to common areas like the dining and entertainment rooms. Other common areas where residents interact with each other include a pool, a library, and an activities room. Retirement communities in Idaho Falls differ in the services offered, from basic daily meals and activities to luxurious accommodations that include bars and spas. Assisted living facilities in Idaho Falls typically have a staff on-site 24 hours a day, with an advanced security system to ensure the utmost safety for residents.

What Are the Benefits of an Assisted Living Facility?

An assisted living facility allows residents to continue living an independent lifestyle that is somewhat modified. A resident might live with a chronic health condition that requires monitoring, as well as live with memory loss and/or mobility issues. Residents do not have to worry about repair and maintenance issues, which they do have to worry about while living independently in a home or apartment.

One of the greatest benefits of living at an assisted living facility in Idaho Falls is to prevent the development of loneliness and isolation. Many residents have lost a spouse and the ensuing period has caused them to feel alone, which often triggers negative mental health issues such as depression and anxiety. Research data accumulated over decades of work indicates loneliness and isolation are bad for mental, cognitive, and physical health. The presence of other residents combined with opportunities to interact with other residents throughout each day helps residents maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Is Your Elderly Parent Doing Well Living on Their Own?

February 16, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

If you noticed a change in mom or dad or another loved one during a recent visit from out of town, you are not alone. Experts say when families spend time together after a prolonged separation many adult children realize their parents are not doing as well as they thought they were living on their own.

Some of the most obvious signs a parent is having problems caring for him or herself is an unintended loss of weight, change in grooming habits or signs of a fall. The ADLs or Activities of Daily Living are used by experts to evaluate the needs of a person and include personal care such as bathing, dressing and toileting as well as transferring (ability to get in and out of bed or chair), continence and eating.

Other important signs a person is no longer doing well on their own and could benefit from some sort of assistance are based on what experts call the Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs). These include things like paying bills, taking care of their home, preparing and cooking meals, being able to get out of the home, and socializing.

At MorningStar at West San Jose we offer assisted living and memory care. Our assisted living is designed to provide the services residents need to maintain their independence with 24/7 care managers, medication management, access to licensed nurses and more. Moreover, all residents are treated to a delicious, healthy restaurant-style dining service, wellness programs and activities, and sponsored community outings and events.

Our beautiful home has assisted living suites in a range of floor plans including studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom.  In addition, we offer respite care, (short recuperative stays) or trial stays from one week up to a full month to see if we are a good fit.  For trusted senior living in San Jose, we encourage you to consider MorningStar.

MorningStar is guided by a culture rooted in our mission of honoring God, valuing seniors, and investing in our team, which allows us to deliver services with warmth, sincerity and depth of purpose. Assisted Living at MorningStar’s Community in San Jose

February 12, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

If you are a senior or have a parent or other loved one that needs more daily help to ensure their safety and wellbeing, it may be time to consider an assisted living community.  When you begin your search, please add MorningStar at West San Jose to the top of your list.  Our beautiful community borders Saratoga, Los Gatos and Cupertino and is convenient for medical facilities, shopping and restaurants as well as recreational areas.

Too often seniors worry that moving into assisted living will result in a loss of independence and freedom.  They are afraid that assisted living communities are cold, institutional places that feel more like a hospital or nursing home. Moreover, many mistakenly believe it will mean a loss of privacy and the ability to make their own decisions. At MorningStar at West San Jose, this could not be further from the truth.

What sets MorningStar apart from other senior living in the area?  Along with spacious private suites in a range of configurations and floor plans, a whole host of amenities, and five-star dining, our community also provides care services that help our assisted living residents maintain their sense of independence and dignity.

As we define health and well-being holistically and offer services and programming that supports the whole person: body, mind and spirit, we believe it makes MorningStar a destination for successful aging.  In addition, we have a staff that feels it is a privilege to care for seniors and believes in our core values of love, respect, honesty, fairness, goodness, and kindness.

In fact, our goal is to provide a true home for our residents by creating a MorningStar family that includes residents and their families as well as our team members.  In addition to our 69 suites for assisted living, our community has 34 suites devoted to the individualized care of residents with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.  Please contact us to learn more about our amenities, care services, availability and pricing.

MorningStar takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003.  We believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless; and we act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof. Gift Ideas for Someone with Memory Impairment

February 09, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

If you want to get something special for mom or dad or another loved one suffering from Alzheimer’s or a dementia-related disease, it can be challenging to figure out a good gift. This is where the Internet can lend a hand with a range of items designed to enhance your loved one’s quality of life.

Dementia care specialists say it can take a little more time and some creativity but there are many great gift ideas. One idea is personalized gifts or memory-filled ones. A photo album filled with pictures of the person surrounded by people important to them, or a picture book from a place they loved to visit. A coffee mug personalized with a photo or a cozy throw filled with favorite family pictures are also good ideas.

Music from their younger years, show tunes and old movies are sure to make them smile and can be a good way to spend an afternoon together listening to their new gifts. Coloring books filled with pictures of things they love such as animals or flowers, and a set of new markers or crayons, and easy-to-do crafts are also fun to do together.

Another item targeted to people with Alzheimer’s or dementia is therapy stuffed animals.  Designed to meet their special needs, one example is a teddy bear that comes with a few classic songs but has room to load a person’s favorite tunes (up to a 1,000 songs). Cuddly robotic cat and dog stuffed animals have a calming, soothing effect on people in the middle and later stages of Alzheimer’s disease. Research shows they can help the person remember a time in their life when their purpose included caring for others.

Along with assisted living, MorningStar at West San Jose provides compassionate and loving care to those suffering from memory impairment. The Reflections Neighborhood is meticulously designed to accommodate the special needs of memory care residents, allowing them as much independence as possible.   Our specially-trained care team understands that the essence of the person still exists despite the memory loss, and will strive every day to connect with and nurture that essence. Please contact us or visit our website for more information.

MorningStar is guided by a culture rooted in our mission of honoring God, valuing seniors, and investing in our team, which allows us to deliver services with warmth, sincerity and depth of purpose. We have built a reputation for creating homes filled with an atmosphere of love and community. Please contact us to learn more about the finest assisted living and memory care in San Jose, CA.

3 Things to Look for in an Assisted Living Home to Encourage Senior Independence

February 02, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

When it’s time to start considering assisted living care for your elderly parent, spouse or loved one, there are a few things to keep in mind. As we’re sure you’re aware, deciding on a senior living community is no easy feat. You are likely taking multiple preferences into account. While staying mindful of the things best for you, your family and your loved one, consider these 3 things to look for in assisted living Portland that you may not be aware of.

Find an Assisted Living Facility that Promotes Independence

While your loved one may need added help, care and attention completing tasks and chores, they still want to feel independent and self-sufficient. It’s important to find a senior living community in Portland that promotes senior identity and autonomy.

  1. Assisted living facilities that encourage independence might have more activities and events for seniors to attend, encouraging them to get out of their rooms and socialize with their neighbors while completing crafts and games.

  2. Retirement homes with easily accessible amenities make it easier for seniors to complete the things that are important to them. If your loved one gets their hair cut once a month, an on-site salon promotes autonomy by allowing seniors in assisted living to continue their regular routines and maintenance with some guidance and supervision. Likewise, senior living facilities provide on-site fitness centers, movie theaters, bistros, gardens, convenience markets or coffee shops.

  3. Assisted Living communities with highly skilled and knowledgeable caretakers promote better independence among seniors. These equipped professionals know how to navigate the changing needs of seniors in assisted living care and how to mitigate frustration and emotional challenges. Caretakers want to see seniors be successful. At MorningStar Senior Living Portland, caretakers and staff encourage seniors to be their authentic selves.

How to Transition a Loved One From Independent Living to Assisted Living

January 31, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

It is normal to experience changes as we age. According to Consumer Affairs, 7 out of 10 adults will require assisted living care at some point in their lifetime. If you are grieving the mental and physical changes of a parent, spouse or loved one, know that they can still live life to the fullest with the proper care regime.

It is a difficult day when the decision to move your loved one from independent living retirement homes to assisted living happens. However, there is some helpful advice that can help you plan for your loved one’s future.

Why Pick a Senior Living Community with a Continuum of Care?

A continuum of care defines retirement communities that host multiple services under one building. This means that senior living communities with independent living, assisted living and memory care can operate under one community, or at the very least, offer an easy transition to another building.

Picking a senior living community that offers a continuum of care is beneficial for seniors in multiple ways. Change is difficult for some seniors, especially if they are struggling with cognitive decline. Seniors in need of assisted living care may worry about adapting to a new environment and routine if they are moved to a new facility. Unfamiliar surroundings, new faces, and changes in daily activities can easily overwhelm seniors and make the transition process more difficult.

Continuum of Care Benefits

If your loved one is transitioning from independent living to assisted living, senior living communities with a continuum of care are already aware of the challenges your loved one is facing and these needs can be easily communicated to the next department. Not only this, but the community is familiar with your loved one’s personality, likes, dislikes, passions and goals. This instills confidence that your loved one will be better understood and their needs more easily met by caretakers and staff.

The Importance of Healthy Meals for Seniors in Assisted Living Care

January 29, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

We all know it’s important to take care of our health, especially as we age. However, for some elderly adults, taking care of our bodies becomes more difficult. If you or a loved one is looking for assisted living care prioritizing healthy meals for seniors, MorningStar Retirement Homes Portland curates nutrient-dense meals seniors love.

The health of seniors with special needs often falls at the waist-side if not managed properly. Due to decreased mobility, cognitive decline, anxiety or other limiting concerns, seniors may struggle to feed themselves proper meals.

If you are noticing any of the following food-related symptoms, it may be time to consider Assisted Living Options in Portland:

  • Lack of fresh foods in the home or a high number of expired goods

  • Frequently eating fast food or delivery

  • Often heavily processed foods like chips, T.V. dinners and other frozen snack meals

  • Inability to purchase groceries regularly

Having a lack of healthy food options in the home negatively impacts senior health. Especially if they are already managing ailments and other health concerns. Seniors deserve to enjoy high-quality, healthy meals that encourage proper eating habits.

Elevated Dining Options at MorningStar Retirement Homes Portland

Assisted living manages the day-to-day tasks that many seniors struggle with while still encouraging independence. Our elevated dining options and exciting menus are produced by executive-level chefs who are dedicated to providing the best meal options for assisted living in Portland.

Offerings on our all-day menu are largely prepared from scratch, just as our residents would have done in years past, with daily and weekly specials as well as a la carte items. Some communities feature full bar service; others, wine and beer selections during happy hour and at meals.

Could Your Parents Benefit From Assisted Living?

January 29, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

If you have been relying on a piecemeal approach to care for your elderly parent’s various needs, you may want to consider moving them into an assisted living community.    If cost is the reason you have not considered community living, you may not be aware that assisted living can be more affordable than in-home care services.  Experts say if you are paying for more than 40 hours of weekly care, all told, assisted living is probably less expensive.

Moreover, the peace of mind you get knowing trained care managers are always available to help navigate changes in your loved one’s health is priceless.  At MorningStar at West San Jose, we provide residents a beautiful home along with a lifestyle of comfort and wellbeing.  In addition, our team is committed to caring for seniors and ensuring they are treated with the respect and dignity they deserve.

As an assisted living resident, your parents will have an individualized care plan created just for them after an extensive interview process with our Wellness Director.  It includes an assessment of their current health as well as a full review of their medical history. Additionally, we routinely re-evaluate the needs of our residents and update care plans as needed.  Monthly costs are based on the level of care (we have five levels), along with various auxiliary services, both medical and non-medical, that are priced a la carte.

Our contemporary suites are ready to move into and all new residents need to do is bring their furnishings and personal items. We provide the rest including three daily tasty and nutritional meals, a 24/7 care staff, full-time licensed nurse, scheduled transportation and much more.  And in case you wondered, MorningStar is pet friendly.  Please contact us or visit our website for more information about outstanding senior living at MorningStar.

The Benefits of Assisted Living Roommates

January 24, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

Transitioning to assisted living is difficult for many seniors. Navigating this change with a close friend or spouse makes assisted living easier. Besides companionship, there are many added benefits to having a roommate in assisted living.

Senior living communities, like MorningStar in Parker, Colorado, encourage seniors to explore roommate options in assisted living for the following reasons:

  1.  More Support

If you are moving into assisted living with a spouse or close friend, these individuals likely know you better than anyone. While senior living communities offer increased supervision and personalized care routines, a roommate in assisted living can provide more thorough evaluations, noticing even the slightest of changes in behavior or health. This can be quickly brought to management’s attention to help provide better-suited care or medical attention.

  2. Increased Confidence

Making friends in assisted living can seem intimidating to many seniors. Having someone by your side to help you meet new people greatly diminishes the anxiety around trying new things and being social. A roommate can help seniors in assisted living by encouraging their friend or spouse to go to activities with them or explore the many amenities their community offers. By having someone by their side, it’s more likely they’ll feel comfortable trying something new or chatting it up with their neighbors.

  3. Affordability

Having someone to split housing costs with makes assisted living more affordable for many families. Rent and utility costs can be split between two people. Not only this, but seniors can save money by not needing to purchase as much furniture or appliances.

  4. Enhanced Quality of Life

Living with a spouse or close friend makes assisted living more comfortable and easier to adjust. If both seniors require assisted living care, these individuals will feel less alone during their adjustment. They will have someone to share common memories with and be excited to make more in their new home.

When is it Time to Move a Parent to Assisted Living?

January 22, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

It can be hard to truly know when it’s time to make the transition to assisted living. We may often feel blind-sighted when it comes to this decision. We have always seen our parents as independent and strong providers, so when things start to fall by the wayside, this can cause us to experience confusion and denial. To help you better understand your parents’ changing needs, below is a comprehensive list that better outlines when it is time to consider moving a parent to an assisted living community.

Look out for these behaviors or actions that might indicate the need for assisted living care:

  1. Difficulty with  housekeeping or completing regular chores

Aging definitely can cause some seniors to slow down, meaning chores may not be done as quickly as they once were. However, this can also be the first cause for concern. If there is more trash around the house, garbage not being taken out, dirty dishes sitting around, or general hoarding happening in your loved one’s home, this can be a sign that your parents need assisted living care. They may be forgetting to do these chores or be unable to do them on their own.

  2. Unusual weight gain or weight loss

When a senior is no longer able to properly cook for themselves, they may not eat or exclusively eat processed meals or fast food. A drastic change in your loved one’s weight should be a huge warning sign that they may require assisted living care or even medical attention due to improper eating habits.

  3. Behavior changes

Getting older can generally cause some personality or communication changes, but if you are noticing a drastic personality change, you may want to consider alternative living arrangements for your loved one. They may be experiencing symptoms of dementia, depression, anxiety, or another ailment that is causing them to act unlike themselves.

Some Bad Habits May Contribute to Cognitive Decline

January 19, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

As we age, more of us worry about ourselves or a loved one getting Alzheimer’s disease. Currently the disease does not have a cure but there are several medications that help mitigate symptoms, and a few more promising treatments on the horizon. That being said, it is still a disease none of us wish to experience.

Many people are aware of studies showing a good diet and exercise are not only good for heart health but also good for maintaining cognitive health. Additionally, Jessica Caldwell, a neuropsychologist and director of the Women’s Alzheimer’s Movement Prevention Center at the Cleveland Clinic, told AARP there are lesser-known things people can do to strengthen cognitive health. She explains it involves letting go of some bad habits and replacing them with healthier ones.

One suggestion is to try and limit negative thoughts. A study reports “participants who repeatedly dwelled on negative thoughts had more amyloid and tau deposits in their brain, the biological markers of Alzheimer’s disease.” While we all have spent time thinking about bad things happening or that have happened, experts say repeatedly focusing on negative thoughts may put us at a greater risk for Alzheimer’s.

Another easy way to lessen your risk for Alzheimer’s is to get vaccinated. Paul Schulz, M.D., a neurologist at McGovern Medical School at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston, reported on a nationwide study, which found adults over 65 who received at least one influenza vaccination were 40 percent less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease. Another study found a 25 to 30 percent reduction in Alzheimer’s for seniors who had a pneumonia vaccination.

Other studies link an increase in the risk for Alzheimer’s to consuming sugary drinks (including fruit juices – better to eat the fruit). Researchers say it can lead to spiking blood sugar and an exaggerated insulin response, which may trigger chronic inflammation in the brain.

Moving into one of the retirement communities in Idaho Falls can trigger considerable stress. You have to deal with a new living arrangement in a smaller living space. Events such as meals follow a daily schedule that does not allow much flexibility. You have to get used to a caregiver visiting your apartment, as well as adapt to several rules that enhance the safety of all residents. Perhaps the greatest trigger of stress is the feeling of isolation.

Human beings thrive on social interactions that involve making connections. We are wired to pursue meaningful relationships that create a sense of purpose and fulfillment. As we grow older, our social networks begin to shrink, and hence, many of us experience feelings of loneliness and isolation. Moving into an assisted living facility in Idaho Falls can compound the feelings of loneliness and isolation.

Let’s review four amazing benefits of socialization at senior living centers in Idaho Falls.

Bolsters Mental Health

Of all the benefits of socialization at an assisted living facility in Idaho Falls, no other benefit has more of a positive impact than improving mental health. Feelings of loneliness and isolation often lead to the development of mental health issues such as depression and anxiety. It also can lead to cognitive decline because of fewer opportunities to utilize problem-solving skills. By engaging in one of the many group activities scheduled at retirement communities in Idaho Falls, you or a loved one stimulates the mind and fosters positive thoughts.

Improves Physical Health

Socializing improves physical health in several ways. It encourages regular exercise. Some of the group activities scheduled at MorningStar of Idaho Falls include physical exercises such as dancing, yoga, and tai chi. Socialization also promotes better nutrition, as our meals feature healthy dishes that enhance heart health and strengthen the immune system. Participating in group activities helps seniors improve their balance and coordination, which goes a long way toward preventing falls.

Provides Emotional Support

Loneliness and isolation can take a devastating toll on a senior’s emotions. Our assisted living facility in Idaho Falls understands the devastating toll loneliness and isolation have on emotions, which is why we provide a supportive environment for residents to connect with other residents and develop trusted friendships. Residents get to share their joys and concerns with other residents who understand their perspectives and experiences.

Develops Social Skills

Because we interact with other people less frequently as we get older, we tend to lose some of our social skills. The result is becoming less confident in social settings. At retirement communities in Idaho Falls, residents develop, or in some cases, rediscover social skills because of the many opportunities they have to interact with their peers. Participating in group activities, such as the ones regularly scheduled at our senior living center in Idaho Falls, helps our residents better engage in conversations.

MorningStar of Idaho Falls: A Great Place for Socialization

At our senior living center in Idaho Falls, our caregivers understand the importance of socialization for residents. This is why we create a welcoming and highly interactive environment that motivates our residents to socialize with each other. Learn more about our regularly scheduled group activities by scheduling a tour of our assisted living facility.

Living With Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI)

January 15, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

MCI (mild cognitive impairment) can be a precursor to dementia but does not always progress to dementia. Medical professionals report 10% to 40% of MCI cases go on to become dementia, and a good percentage of those become Alzheimer’s disease. On the positive side, research shows as many as 30-40% of people with MCI get better. As with Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia, there are no drugs to treat MCI but doctors say there are steps we can take to mitigate or minimize its effects.

MCI is just as its name suggests. The impairment is mild and does not affect a person’s ability to care for themselves or take away their independence. Steps a person should take to protect their cognitive health include quitting smoking and moderating or eliminating alcohol consumption. If you do have hypertension (high blood pressure), high cholesterol levels or diabetes, it is important to treat these conditions and manage them through medications, diet and healthy lifestyle habits.

Other things you can do to thwart, delay or minimize the effects of MCI are to maintain a healthy weight and exercise, which is good for our brains as well as our bodies. Avoid junk food, highly processed foods and foods high in sodium; and reduce the amount of red meat in your diet. Isolation has also been linked to a higher risk for dementia, so it is important to stay social.

Along with assisted living, MorningStar at West San Jose provides compassionate, individualized memory care for those with mild to advanced stages of Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  Every aspect of our community is tailored to serve the needs of our special residents from purposeful activities to nutritional, easy-to-eat foods.  Our job is to elevate and celebrate life by trying to connect with and nurture the individual each day, and to ensure they are treated with the utmost respect and dignity they deserve.  Please visit our website to learn more about our home, our staff and the philosophy that guides our care.

Are You Looking for Assisted Living in San Jose?

January 12, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

Several studies have shown that most seniors who move into senior living communities say they prefer it to living alone.  A Place for Mom reports that “while many seniors want to age at home as long as they can, research shows that senior living communities may be the healthier option; especially after a spouse passes away.”  Also, seniors are often unaware of the wide range of services and amenities available at an independent or assisted living community.

When a senior lives alone, they can become isolated, especially if they have stopped driving.  In addition, trying to maintain a house can be difficult for aging adults.  Housekeeping chores, preparing meals, and going up and down stairs can be challenging for the elderly.  Another problem faced by seniors who live alone is the fear of falling.  Having no one around to help in the case of an emergency can be scary as well as life-threatening.

If you are looking for assisted living in San Jose, we encourage you to consider MorningStar at West San Jose.  Our beautiful community has 69 suites with spacious studio, one-bedroom or two-bedroom floor plans. Apartments feature a kitchenette, handicap-accessible bathrooms and emergency call systems. Weekly housekeeping and linen service is provided.

Our luxury community offers all the services, resort-style amenities, programs and activities to ensure residents a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and security.   Starting with a five-star dining service that includes meals prepared largely from scratch using the freshest ingredients, restaurant-style dining and a private dining room, we have a bistro, theatre, salon and underground parking.  Other amenities include a life enrichment room, fitness center, courtyard, and a sky terrace as well as scheduled transportation.

MorningStar at West San Jose offers the kind of senior living area families count on.  Along with assisted living, we provide memory care in our Reflections Neighborhood for those with Alzheimer’s or other dementia-related diseases. In addition, we offer respite care, (short recuperative stays) and trial stays from one week up to a full month to see if we are a good fit.  Please contact us or visit our website for more information.

MorningStar takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003.  We believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless; and we act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof. Helping a Friend Grieve

January 10, 2024 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

Many of us have watched a good friend go through the grieving process after losing a loved one and have been frustrated by not being able to do more to comfort them. Experts explain this is a common feeling and provide some suggestions to help.

One of the first things to remember is everyone experiences grief in their own way. Heather L. McGinty, assistant professor in the department of psychiatry and behavioral health at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus, explains grief triggers a range of emotions, sensations and behaviors and can be complex.

A person’s emotions may swing from tearfulness to anger or denial, and as a friend, it can be hard to know what to say. Loneliness, betrayal, fear and acceptance are some of the other emotions grief brings up. Some people even experience physical symptoms such as headaches or stomach aches.

If you want to help, grief counselors say to first make sure the person wants it; and recommend asking if they want the type of support you hope to offer, such as spending time with them. Some people are very private and prefer to grieve in their own way. The most important thing is to be supportive to their wishes and be prepared to listen rather than hand out advice. Also, be specific like letting them know you want to take them to lunch when they are ready, or bring over a meal, run errands or do some yard work.

Experts say avoid telling the person you know how they feel. Again, everyone experiences grief differently. Even if you don’t understand the way the person is acting out their grief, be supportive not judgmental. Lastly, don’t say things like “everything happens for a reason” or “they are in a better place.” If you think they would benefit from professional support, be sure to encourage it.

At MorningStar at West San Jose, our beautiful home is designed from the ground up to serve our residents’ every need. Our community offers stylish assisted living suites in a variety of floorplans. Understanding the Difference Between Assisted Living and Skilled Nursing

December 25, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

If you are currently seeking assisted living care for a spouse or loved one, you may be considering an assisted living community or a skilled nursing facility. Both of these senior living options offer unique services and gaining a deeper understanding of these two choices will help you make an informed decision for your loved one.

Assisted Living

Most assisted Living Facilities are designed to assist residents 62 years and older with the activities of daily living in a residential setting. Life enrichment teams and hospitality services are a big amenity offered in assisted living communities. This hospitality service plans and coordinates every activity and social gathering on our senior living campus. These teams keep seniors active in assisted living.

Residents and their families gain peace of mind knowing trained care managers are there to help navigate changes in health. MorningStar Senior Living Portland also offers a secure neighborhood for the memory-impaired, making it easy for seniors to transition to memory care if necessary.

Skilled Nursing

Once known as “nursing homes,” Skilled Nursing Facilities were popular at a time when there were few other options for senior care. Today, Skilled Nursing Facilities are generally more focused on short-term rehab over long-term care. This means they dedicate more of their space and resources to post-hospitalization rehabilitation. Their staff are typically RNs and CNAs, serving residents in fragile and declining health. For seniors who require complicated levels of care and deal with intense health concerns, Skilled Nursing Facilities may provide more attuned care to these individuals.

The Move to an Assisted Living Community

December 22, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

No matter what age we are, moving can be a big deal. Whether as a high schooler changing schools, or a retiree embarking on a new chapter to an assisted living community, moving is a big deal.

For older adults, a move to assisted living may include giving up a beloved family home. In this case, they probably have a whole house full of things and will need to downsize. That alone can be tough, as the person will most likely need to give up possessions they have had for years. For more on downsizing, the Internet offers a variety of suggestions to help you get started.

MorningStar at West San Jose’s team understands every resident’s move is unique and recognizes it for what it is – a major lifestyle transition. This is why we approach each move-in with the utmost sensitivity, and sincerely strive to nurture a good relationship right from the start. We seek to reinforce the positive aspects of community life, and do all we can to help the person embrace their new adventure.

Once your family decides assisted living at MorningStar is a good fit, we request a deposit to secure your chosen suite. From there our “House to Home” process begins in earnest. This includes getting together vital information, agreements and permissions inherent to the move such as a medical assessment and a physician’s plan of care, along with other documentation.

Practical advice from us includes recommending moving companies experienced in senior transitions. Furniture carts and dollies are available to borrow, if needed. We also offer packing tips and suggestions on the best items to bring. Most importantly we keep the lines of communication open as we know it is vital to a satisfactory experience.

MorningStar at West San Jose’s assisted living is designed to support and engage residents’ mind, body and spirit. Our wide array of amenities, hospitality and senior care services, wellness programs and activities help nurture residents’ independence for the best quality of life. In addition, our beautiful community offers specialized memory care in our Reflections Neighborhood for those suffering from Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  Please contact us or visit our website for more information about outstanding senior living in San Jose, CA.

Since 2003, MorningStar has considered it a privilege and responsibility to “cast a new light” on senior living, inspired and empowered by our unique mission: to honor, to value, to invest.
