MorningStar at West San Jose Provides Residents the Care They Need

October 25, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

Families often wonder how assisted living communities such as MorningStar at West San Jose determine the level of care for residents. We want to reassure you there is no need to worry mom or dad’s needs will not be addressed as our job includes creating and routinely re-evaluating residents’ individualized care plan designed for their wellbeing and safety.

Once you and your family decide MorningStar is the best fit, we invite you to meet with our Wellness Director to come up with a specialized care plan based on five levels of care – basic through level 4. Additionally, monthly fees are determined by the square footage and location of your suite within the building along with the view. We have a choice of studio, one-bedroom or two-bedroom floorplans.

Our care services take into account the cost and time of providing each service such as assistance with dressing and bathing. The result is a highly Individualized Service Plan that offers the right amount of assistance when you need it. Medication management is included in Level 1. Other various auxiliary services, both medical and non-medical, are priced a la carte.

We believe wellness of mind, body and spirit is a joint effort between our remarkable residents and team members. Between clinical services and our life enrichment programs and activities, we work hard to be a breath of fresh air; and look for creative solutions that offer a higher quality of care at a lower cost to families. Working within the scope of our licensing with the Department of Health, we try to find creative solutions to extend the stay of our residents even as health conditions change.

Along with assisted living, our Reflections Neighborhood provides memory care to those with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. All team members complete thorough training including our signature program, Lavender Sky, to help residents and their families navigate this challenging journey. Please contact us or visit our website for more information about exceptional senior living in San Jose.

MorningStar is guided by a culture rooted in our mission of honoring God, valuing seniors, and investing in our team, which allows us to deliver services with warmth, sincerity and depth of purpose. Healthy Eating Options for Seniors in Assisted Living

October 18, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

We all know that making healthy food options benefits our bodies, but did you know our food choices impact our brain health, too? Seniors need to spend extra care making healthy food choices. When an elderly family member struggles with cognitive decline, they may be unable to make these choices themselves.

So far, no scientific evidence exists that certain foods can prevent Alzheimer’s disease or age-related cognitive decline. However, caring for your brain health through your diet is still essential. MorningStar at Laurelhurst offers Assisted living options that encourage healthy eating in their  “BrainWise” program.

Live a Healthy Life in Assisted Living

It’s easy to make healthy eating choices at MorningStar Retirement Communities. Our assisted living dining experience is inspired by the belief that diet is the centerpiece of personal wellness. Food is a healing medicine unlike any other. “BrainWise” is a lifestyle at MorningStar where we prioritize using ingredients known to support brain health. Superfoods, like acai berries, Omega 3 fats, dark chocolate, and dark greens, supply your brain with vitamin K, anti-inflammatory properties, and antioxidants.

Our brains utilize fats to work properly. Natural fats found in SuperFoods are proven to nourish, protect, and enhance the performance of our brain cells. Next time you’re dining with our executive chefs in assisted living at MorningStar, ask for the salmon, avocado toast, or a salad made with olive oil dressing and nuts. These ingredients are high in natural fats that encourage brain health and are abundant in our “BrainWise” program at MorningStar.

Choosing an Assisted Living Community

October 18, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

According to the US Census Bureau’s statistics, there were an estimated 56 million adults ages 65 years and older, accounting for approximately 16.8% of the nation's population as of 2021. An aging population means the number of seniors who require help with the ADLs (activities of daily living) will continue to grow as will the necessity for assisted living communities to address those needs.

The National Center for Assisted Living, a non-profit organization representing assisted living facilities across the country, explains, "Assisted living is part of a continuum of long-term care services that provides a combination of housing, personal care services, and health care designed to respond to individuals who need assistance with normal daily activities in a way that promotes maximum independence.”

So how do you decide the best fit for yourself or a loved one when it comes to an assisted living community? Experts say begin by researching who regulates assisted living in your state and the type of regulations in place. Then begin looking at individual homes. The most important thing is to ensure the home provides the level of care you or your loved one needs now and will need over the next several years as you don’t want to have to make another move in a couple of years.

Affordability is another consideration. Consulting with an elder care attorney can be helpful in exploring creative ways to pay for assisted living. Also, you will want a location convenient for family and friends, and for getting to doctor’s appointments, shopping and more.

Finally, consider the amenities and activities. Does the community have inviting common areas for visitors? What type of onsite amenities would you desire? A salon, theater or chapel? Are the activities or hobbies you enjoy such as crafting or bridge available?

At MorningStar at West San Jose, we offer assisted living along with memory care. As an assisted living resident, you will have a personalized plan created for you, and updated as needed. Around-the-clock care managers, access to licensed nurses and medication management are just a few of the many services we provide to ensure your safety and to meet your needs.

MorningStar residents enjoy beautifully prepared meals, served restaurant-style and eaten in a relaxed, community setting. We also know it is important for seniors to continue to learn and contribute, which is why we offer a wide range of meaningful wellness programs, activities and entertainment. How Assisted Living Eases Caregiver Stress

October 16, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

It can be emotionally taxing to provide assisted living support to a loved one or spouse. It’s essential to prioritize self-care to support your loved one or parent struggling with memory loss or immobility. Assisted living eases caregiver stress by providing a community equipped to care for seniors. Assisted living communities are designed for the proper safety of seniors and are staffed with caregivers who are knowledgeable about medication management and help with everyday tasks, chores, and errands.

Below we will outline the many advantages to senior living communities and how assisted living eases caregiver stress.

Proper Safety

To reiterate, assisted living communities are designed with proper safety measures in mind. MorningStar provides senior living that is wheelchair and cane accessible. These retirement homes are designed with easily accessible living arrangements and community spaces. Cameras, safety locks, and 24/7 caregivers keep seniors safe and provide families and loved ones with peace of mind.

Medication Management

Many seniors are not organized with their medication routine, especially if they have multiple medications stored in different locations throughout the house. Seniors are also known to hoard old, outdated prescriptions which can be dangerous. Caregivers at home can forget the times in which they have administered their medications which can cause daily anxiety. Assisted living homes provide medication management with strict and organized schedules which will keep your loved one safe and in good health.

Respite Care

MorningStar Assisted Living understands caregivers need periodic breaks to recharge. Respite care services offer temporary relief by providing professional care for your loved ones. It’s an opportunity to rest, rejuvenate, and engage in activities that nurture your well-being. By incorporating respite care into your assisted living routine, you can manage stress effectively and maintain your health while knowing your loved one is cared for.

Adult Children Can Become Overprotective of Parents

October 16, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

We all understand the value of independence but as we grow older, many seniors are faced with physical and mental limitations that make them feel it may be threatened. Independence is one of the few things seniors want to feel they still have control over; and is important as it is closely tied to self-worth and a sense of achievement.

Experts say well-intentional families can sometimes create bigger problems by becoming overprotective toward mom or dad. This can result in the senior becoming more fearful than the situation warrants, and erode their self-esteem and confidence. Another problem threatening a senior’s independence is when adult children talk to the parent as if they are a child. Even the most conscientious caregivers can sometimes baby the person way too much or pressure them to do what they think is best.

Just as we do not want people telling us what to do or intruding into things we are not ready to share, you need to respect your parents’ privacy. When mom or dad’s wishes are respected, they will feel like they have more control of their lives. If a time comes when your parents’ need more help than they can get at home, it may be time to look into an assisted living community. Just be sure it is one where they will be respected and their independence will be nurtured.

If you are exploring assisted living communities, MorningStar at West San Jose is one you should put on the top of your list. Scheduled to open in late 2023, our beautiful home is designed to meet all the needs of our residents with a range of luxury amenities, senior care, hospitality services, wellness programs, and activities. MorningStar takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003. Senior Friendly Home Modifications for Safety and Comfort

October 13, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

If your senior parent or elderly loved one is living at home, chances are you are aware of safety concerns. If your parents are struggling with memory loss or in need of assisted living, providing an adequate amount of care at your home may be difficult. Unfortunately, there are hidden risks in our home for seniors in need of memory care. Our homes, while full of love, are not built with assisted living in mind.

Stairs, steps, dangerous furniture, clutter, tight spaces, and poor lighting can all cause accidents or falls for seniors in need of assisted living. Senior living homes build their communities with these issues in mind. While it may be difficult to think of your loved one anywhere but home, it may be worth considering if safety is at the forefront of your mind. Until you can find a senior living community near you, here are some senior-friendly home modifications for safety and comfort.

First Floor Living Only

If your parent or loved one is living in your two-story home, it is a wise idea to relocate their living quarters to the first floor only. Navigating stairs daily increases the risk of an accident or fall to occur. By living on the first floor, seniors can access the things they need easily. Depending on the floor plan of your home, the first floor is likely the best living arrangement for seniors who require assisted living care.

Declutter

While you don’t have control over the size of the home you own, you do have control over what is inside. Minimizing clutter, furniture, and overall items in the home will aid in your parent or loved one’s navigation and lower risks for falls or trips. Be mindful of rugs, large furniture, and messes caused by children or pets.

Safety Systems

If your parent or loved one will be living on the first floor of your home due to accessibility, it is likely you will need to consider safety systems that inhibit unwanted behaviors that may cause them harm. Installing systems to keep outside doors locked at night will prevent seniors from leaving their homes alone. Seniors shouldn’t feel trapped. Be sure to only utilize these methods if absolutely necessary for safety.

Senior Communities Offer a Carefree Lifestyle

September 25, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

Did you know that studies show many older adults prefer the carefree life offered by senior living? The idea of no longer having all of the responsibilities that come along with owning a home including the repairs and upkeep is very appealing to many seniors. Furthermore, for seniors who still think moving into an assisted living community is a place people go to die, most likely have not visited one of today’s vibrant communities.

There are even studies that suggest moving into senior living may be a healthier option for some than living alone. This can especially be true for seniors after the death of a spouse as many begin to feel isolated and lonely. Not to mention the burden of keeping up with household chores such as cleaning, cooking, laundry or needing to move up and down stairs.

Senior living communities offer an individual the opportunity to easily make new friends as well as give them the time to pursue special interests or to explore new hobbies. Also, communities typically provide amenities such as onsite fitness centers in addition to offering a range of exercise classes geared toward the fitness level of older adults.

If you are looking for exceptional assisted living or memory care, MorningStar at West San Jose may be your answer. 3 Healthy Eating Habits for Seniors in Assisted Living

September 22, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

Eating a balanced diet may be difficult for seniors who need daily help with everyday tasks. For seniors in need of assisted living, eating, shopping for groceries, and preparing meals may be overwhelming. Because of this, seniors may eat more take-out, fast food, and frozen meals that are low in nutrients necessary for good health.

Senior living communities understand the struggles seniors face when it comes to eating and making healthy choices. Incorporating these 3 healthy eating habits for seniors in assisted living will improve senior’s overall health and happiness.

Protein

Eating enough protein every day is crucial for optimal health and brain function. Protein keeps us full and focused. Protein supplies fuel to complete tasks, enjoy socialization, and feel satiated. Enjoy more protein-rich foods in senior living from executive chefs at MorningStar Assisted Living.

Fruits and Vegetables

Fresh fruits and vegetables are difficult for seniors to keep in supply when they need assisted living care. Seniors who need extra help with daily living may forget they have these fresh foods in their fridge. They may also not recognize when these foods have gone bad. In assisted living communities near you, you will find fresh foods incorporated into meals daily. Often, vegetables are picked from our very own senior living gardens.

Water

When was the last time you had a glass of water? For seniors, getting an adequate amount of water daily is difficult. Seniors in need of assisted living care may opt for soft drinks, coffee, or extra-sugary fruit juices to quench their thirst. However, these beverages can cause dehydration. Assisted Living Communities in Parker, Co encourage healthy eating and drinking options in their community by making sure water is readily available and encouraged.

Receive the Care You Need at MorningStar at West San Jose

August 18, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

Does your elderly mom or dad dismiss the idea of assisted living fearing it would end their independence and life as they know it? Do they think assisted living homes are more like nursing homes of the past? We want to reassure you and your senior loved one that assisted living communities such as the new MorningStar at West San Jose are not nursing homes. In fact, we do not offer skilled nursing services but rather provide assistance with the ADLs (activities of daily living), along with engaging activities and other services intended to improve and enhance quality of life.

It is important to a senior’s overall health that they receive proper care as the website Aging.com reports, “Functional status and the ability to care for oneself have a significant impact on a senior's quality of life. Unmet needs for help with activities of daily living can lead to malnutrition, poor personal hygiene, isolation, illnesses like urinary tract infections (UTIs), and falls.” In fact, studies show seniors getting assistance with the ADLs allows them to feel like they are in control of their life again and helps them regain a sense of self-worth and purpose.

At MorningStar at West San Jose, we know seniors have a lot to offer and the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless. We act upon this truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof. Our beautiful community offers 69 graciously appointed suites for assisted living in a variety of floorplans. In addition, the Reflections Neighborhood provides 34 memory care suites devoted to the individualized care of residents with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.

We also offer respite care for those recovering from surgery or an illness, as well as short-term stays from one week up to a full month to see if we are a good fit. Please contact us or visit our website for more information about trusted senior living at MorningStar’s new community in San Jose.

Since 2003, MorningStar has considered it a privilege and responsibility to “cast a new light” on senior living, inspired and empowered by our unique mission: to honor, to value, to invest. Our passionate commitment to serving seniors has proudly earned us a reputation for family satisfaction second to none. Playing Games can be Good for Your Brain

August 14, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

While there is a long-held belief memory loss and aging are inevitable, we can actually help keep our brains sharp. A number of studies show our brains continue to build new connections, and engaging in activities that challenge us, can lead to sustained brain development and offer new ways to approach challenges.

The most effective puzzles and games linked to a reduced risk of dementia are those requiring critical thinking, problem-solving and memory recall. Patrick Porter, Ph.D, a neuroscience expert and founder of BrainTap, explains “These activities stimulate the brain by challenging it to find patterns, make connections, and think creatively. They require mental flexibility and encourage the brain to adapt and reorganize neural networks, enhancing cognitive reserve.”

To get the most benefit from mental activities, the experts say it is best to vary the type of games we play. Shifting from games that rely on speed, rapid decision making or memory help strengthen and tap into multiple ways to engage the brain. Studies show it is important to keep challenging ourselves and pushing the bar toward more difficult activities. Another thing to keep in mind is the studies linking socialization to a decrease in dementia. So before you jump on the computer for some brain games, think about putting together a group of friends to play a game of trivia with you or to piece together a puzzle.

The MorningStar at Laurelhurst assisted living and memory care community is designed to provide seniors with everything they want and need in a retirement home including meaningful, fun programs and activities. Along with impressive architectural design elements, an array of luxury amenities, hospitality services and 5-star dining; our home offers Personalized Service Plans for the activities of daily living (ADLs) to help maintain residents’ independence.

Protect Your Eyes as You Age

August 14, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

Did you know it is estimated 895 million people worldwide will have some level of vision impairment by 2050. The Lancet reports it signals a 150 percent increase over the next 30 years and includes loss of vision from cataracts and glaucoma. Experts say while many vision problems can be treated, in some cases they can also be prevented by adopting simple, healthy habits.

If you have already gotten into the habit of wearing sunscreen and a sun-blocking hat when you are outdoors for any period of time, optometrists say you need to complete your protection by making sure to wear protective sunglasses. Exposure to UV increases our risk for cataracts and your sunglasses should have a label reading “100 percent protection from UV and UVB rays” or “100 percent protection against UV 400.”  If you are outside working for long hours, consider wrap-around style sunglasses, and if you are doing work such as trimming bushes or chopping wood, be sure to wear safety sunglasses.

As the risk for eye diseases increase as we age, the National Institute on Aging recommends having your eyes checked regularly by an ophthalmologist or optometrist. For those over age 50, you should get a dilated eye exam every year or as recommended by your eye care professional. Everyone over the age of 60 should get a dilated eye exam every year or two. Regardless of age, anyone with diabetes or high blood pressure needs to get a dilated exam at least once a year.

Other ways to protect our eyes as we age is to eat a balanced diet with lots of fresh vegetables and fruit. Additionally stop smoking, maintain a healthy weight and stay physically active. If you do have high blood pressure or diabetes, you need to learn how to manage them well and follow your doctor’s guidelines.

Enhance Quality of Life for Those With Alzheimer’s Disease

August 11, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

An article in the online publication, Medical News Today, suggests activities that can provide a person with Alzheimer’s disease a sense of normality and to help enrich their life. A study from 2020 reported meaningful activities are important for those with dementia as they can improve both psychological and physical health.

One suggestion of an indoor activity is to sit with the person and look through photo albums of family together. This is an effective way to engage the person and is typically enjoyable. Another relaxing activity can be listening to the person’s favorite music; or if they are more hands-on, do an arts and crafts project. Playing an instrument has much the same calming effect.

Researchers say studies show knitting and crocheting to be calming activities for those with Alzheimer’s. Not only does it help reduce anxiety and depression, but the person gets a sense of accomplishment. Moreover, done within a group setting, it can lessen feelings of loneliness and isolation. Routine things like daily chores can also be comforting and help the person feel like they are a contributing member of the family/group.

Experts say outdoor activities (weather permitting) are important to the person’s overall health and well-being. One area of research for those having dementia includes therapeutic gardening. Data shows gardening can improve a person’s emotional and cognitive state, increase engagement and reduce anxiety.

Other healthy outdoor activities include walking in the park (getting back to nature is good for all of us) and feeding the birds. If the person uses a mobility aid such as a walker or cane, be sure to have them use it. The same goes for wearing good-fitting walking shoes.

The Alzheimer’s Association suggests keeping to a routine each day is helpful; as well as offering other promising ideas worth considering. In addition, they say to remember everyone is different, and if an activity does not seem to be to their liking, try something else. Most importantly activities should be those the person enjoys.

At MorningStar at West San Jose, our Reflections Neighborhood provides compassionate, experienced memory care to those with Alzheimer’s or other dementia-related diseases. Our home is a safe, peaceful place where residents’ independence is encouraged with inviting common areas and clear wayfinding. In addition, purposeful activities keep residents engaged including physical exercise, music, dance, art, and aromatherapy designed to stimulate or calm as the situation requires. Please contact us or visit our website for more information about our new assisted living community.
