The Dining Experience at MorningStar’s New Community in San Jose

April 26, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

At MorningStar Senior Living, we understand the importance of gathering as a community to “break bread” each day.  We believe food is a healing medicine unlike any other, and when our residents sit down to a delicious meal served restaurant-style, it creates lasting bonds and fellowship within our “family.”

We recognize that good nutrition is especially important to the wellbeing of seniors, which is why MorningStar meals are prepared largely from scratch and feature the freshest ingredients from high-quality producers, locally sourced when possible.  Menu offerings are designed by our Executive Chef and include daily and weekly specials as well as a la carte items. Dining is available all day which means you can eat when you are hungry and not according to a rigid schedule.

As a resident, you will be treated to seasonal menus and special holiday feasts such as those we enjoy at Thanksgiving and Christmas.  Also, our Chef modifies menus and recipes to accommodate residents’ changing needs and tastes.  Moreover, you can easily self-manage any dietary restrictions as we offer a wide selection of low sodium, sugar-free, no sugar added, and low-fat foods.

MorningStar also believes that nutrient-rich ingredients can help stimulate the appetite and support brain health.  Therefore, we prepare meals using BrainWise super foods that contain a high concentration of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds.  Super foods include acai, leafy dark greens, dark chocolates, berries, and fish, nuts and other foods high in Omega 3 fats.

For our memory care residents, food is as much about Community as it is about Nutrition. To encourage appetites, our team members sit and share meals with residents, and many are served “family style” as they are in private homes.  Much of our food is modified out of respect for residents’ somewhat compromised eating abilities and includes finger foods, texture-modified diets and easy-to-recognize balanced meals that taste as good as they look.

MorningStar at West San Jose will be opening soon and join MorningStar’s 40+ senior communities either in operation or under construction in eleven states.  If you are looking for exceptional assisted living or memory care in San Jose, we encourage you to contact us and discover why MorningStar is a great place to call home.

Older Adult Fall Prevention

April 21, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

When an older adult trips and falls, it can be life changing. Consequences include serious head injuries, hip fractures and broken bones, and in the worst cases, fatalities. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports 3 million seniors were treated in emergency departments for fall injuries in 2020. Furthermore, more problems can arise as many seniors need several months to recover, which can cause a decline in strength and mobility as well as mental agility. It can also lead to the loss of independence and isolation.

Statistics show most falls happen for a handful of reasons and being forewarned may help prevent one. The environment, especially the person’s home and surrounding outdoor area is one of the biggest culprits. Danger spots include slippery bathtubs, high mattresses, steep stairs, poorly lit hallways, loose rugs, obstacles in walkways and clutter. Experts say a little bit of time spent addressing these problems with things like non-slip bathmats and grab bars, more lighting, removing clutter, etc. can help prevent a fall.

Another risk factor for a fall is chronic health conditions that affect balance and mobility. Arthritis, heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure can mean a person might experience dizziness or be unable to control muscles to stop a fall.

Growing older also puts us at risk for diseases like glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and cataracts, which in turn, leads to more accidents. Solutions include having yearly eye exams and making sure your eyeglass prescription is up to date.

Experts say it is important for seniors to stay as fit as possible as aging affects muscle strength, flexibility and coordination. Check with your doctor for information on balance and strength exercises. If a medication is making you dizzy or drowsy, talk to your doctor about it. There may be another drug just as effective and doesn’t have the same side effects.

The new MorningStar at West San Jose senior living community is close to Highway 85, and convenient to medical facilities, retail centers and recreational areas. Nursing Homes vs. Assisted Living: What’s the Difference?

March 22, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

You may have heard “nursing home” and “assisted living” used interchangeably. These terms mean different things for seniors looking for post-retirement housing.

Assisted living offers unique benefits for residents that nursing homes may not provide. Here’s what you need to know about both.

The Level of Care Your Loved One Needs

The type of senior living your loved one moves to will be highly dependent on the level of assistance they need.
Assisted living is designed to foster seniors’ independence, social lives, and hobbies.

In assisted living, your loved one receives help with daily tasks that are physically taxing. This includes the basics: eating, dressing, personal hygiene, and staying safe.

Nursing homes, on the other hand, provide long-term and in-depth medical care. As the name suggests, many nursing homes are staffed with Registered Nurses who specialize in senior care.

Your loved one may need a nursing home if he or she cannot perform the majority of the required tasks of daily living on their own. Nursing homes provide special cognitive and physical health care benefits.

How Assisted Living Nurtures Aging Adults

Assisted living communities are the perfect places for aging adults who are still highly independent and active. If your loved one enjoys socializing, participating in hobbies, and getting outdoors, assisted living may be right for them.

Strong Social Networks

Social health should never be overlooked when it comes to aging adults. Elderly people with poor social lives are at higher risk of serious mental and physical health problems — as are people of any age.

Assisted living communities foster long-lasting social connections between residents. These communities often host events that bring residents together and offer fun activities.

Assistance with a Few Tasks

If your loved one is in otherwise good health but needs help with some daily tasks, such as bathing and dressing, assisted living is likely the ideal option for them.

The supportive, caring staff members of assisted living communities help residents with personal care and housekeeping. This means your loved one never has to worry about falling in the shower or managing their household chores on their own.

Health and Fitness Programs

Most assisted living communities emphasize physical activity for residents. Daily exercise, even just walking outdoors at a moderate pace, can protect against serious health problems later in life.
Some assisted living communities offer group fitness classes, swimming pools, and personalized wellness plans. Nutrition and physical activity are vital keys to a long, healthy life!

Should You Choose a Nursing Home or Assisted Living?

It all boils down to how much medical and cognitive support your loved one needs. If your loved one requires more extensive care, a nursing home may be the best option for them.

On the other hand, if your loved one enjoys lots of hobbies, sports, and exercise but just needs some extra help, assisted living is the place to go.

How to Talk to Your Parents About a Move to Assisted Living

March 20, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

Your parents are some of the most important people in your life. It can be tough to bring up the subject of assisted living as they age.

However, assisted living benefits aging parents in so many ways. It’s worth having honest conversations to bring your aging parents up to speed about the advantages of assisted living.
Here’s how you can start these difficult conversations and set your parents up for success.

Don’t Shy Away from Their Feelings

Your parents may experience intense emotions of some kind when you bring up assisted living. This is normal and natural.

Try not to avoid your parents’ feelings as you discuss assisted living. They can feel tough emotions while still recognizing that assisted living may be the best option for them.

It’s also a good idea to get in the habit of validating your parents’ feelings.

For example, if they express anger at the idea of moving to assisted living, you can say, “I understand that you feel betrayed by this. We are trying to improve your health and get you the care that you need. It’s okay to feel angry.”

Validating your parents’ emotions can go a long way in building trust and solid communication. These things can make the move to assisted living much easier.

Give Them Choices and Autonomy

You should include your parents in the decision-making process when you're considering assisted living.
For example, you can give them a list of the assisted living communities you feel would work best for them. Have them visit these communities’ websites, Facebook pages, and blogs for more information. You can even schedule in-person or virtual tours!

Ultimately, your parents are the ones who will spend their time in assisted living. Allow them to voice their opinions about each potential community and respect what they say.

Have Multiple Conversations Over Time

If you continue to bring up the subject of assisted living, your parents may warm up to it over time. It’s best to have frequent, shorter conversations about it after you initially present the idea.

Repeated exposure to the idea of moving to assisted living will make the process less scary and sudden for your aging parents. They may even start coming up with ideas for the move themselves!

Discuss assisted living at neutral times during the day, like mealtimes or during personal grooming routines. This will give your parents plenty of time to process, reflect, and discuss everything without feeling rushed or overwhelmed.

Help Your Parents Learn About the Benefits of Assisted Living

It’s never easy to bring up assisted living for the first time with your elderly parents. If you follow these tips, your conversations will be easier and much more respectful.
Assisted living has a wealth of benefits for seniors and their families. Help your parents learn about the advantages by having these difficult conversations.

What to Do When Senior Parents Refuse to Consider Assisted Living

March 13, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

If you’re looking for advice concerning assisted living, chances are you recently had a tough conversation about moving your parents out of their home and into a community. Naturally, they might feel overwhelmed and defensive about potentially moving to assisted living.

Here’s what you can do to calm them down and help them see the advantages that assisted living communities offer.

Recognize Why They Don’t Want to Go

It’s understandable for elderly parents to refuse assisted living at first. After all, no one likes to be reminded that they’re getting older and are in worse health than they used to be.

Empathy and understanding can go a long way during these transitions. Recognize that your parents aren't trying to be difficult — they’re simply struggling with the reality of aging.

Imagine how you would feel if you had to give up your current home to move into an assisted living community. The experience would be difficult no matter how amazing your new community may be.
Acknowledge your loved ones’ worries and try to put yourself in their shoes as you navigate this sensitive subject.

Continue to Highlight the Positives

Assisted living communities can be the best possible place for many older people to improve their quality of life. As such, it’s best to emphasize the positives when discussing the potential move.

For example, instead of focusing on your parents’ health problems and limitations, reframe the conversation to highlight all the things they can do in assisted living: receive direct assistance, enjoy various amenities, make new friends, and much more.

Avoid Pressuring or Shaming Your Parents

It’s easy to get frustrated when your senior parents resist the idea of entering assisted living. However, voicing your aggravation can often do more harm than good.

Try not to make your parents feel pressured or rushed as they make their decision. They won’t respond well if they feel they’re being forced to do something they don’t want to do.

Never bring up your loved ones’ medical problems in an attempt to persuade them to move. Rather than changing their minds, it will likely just make them feel ashamed and may even cause them to oppose the idea more adamantly.

Give Them Plenty of Control

You might think that the purpose of assisted living is to look after your senior parents as though they were completely helpless, but this isn’t true. Assisted living facilities are designed to help seniors retain their autonomy while getting the help they need.

You should do the same as you prepare them to enter assisted living. Let them make choices and have some say over how things are done. Aside from non-negotiable arrangements and safety concerns, your parents should be able to make most of their own decisions during every part of the process.

Help Your Parents with a Move to Assisted Living

Your parents deserve the highest quality care available, and assisted living can give it to them. With time, patience, and grace, they may even come to view the transition as a good thing.

Top Amenities to Look for in an Assisted Living Community

March 10, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

Assisted living communities are wonderful places where aging adults can get the support that they need. Retirement homes and assisted living communities offer amenities to make residents’ lives easier and more enjoyable.
While the quality of care for your loved one is most important, amenities matter, too. Here are some of the best amenities to look for when you’re evaluating senior living communities.

Nutritious and Delicious Dining Options

Your loved one shouldn’t have to sacrifice taste for high-quality nutritional meals in assisted living. Look for communities that have various dining options for residents.

Most senior living communities are focused on optimal nutrition. This ensures that your loved one will stay as physically healthy as possible. Nutrients help their body function properly and can fight against some diseases.

However, your loved one’s taste preferences matter, too. Look for select dining options that include their favorites, whether it’s a good pizza joint or garden-fresh salads.

Pools and Water Fitness

Indoor and outdoor swimming pools should be at the top of your amenities list. Water fitness is much easier for seniors to enjoy, as it takes the pressure off their joints.

High-quality assisted living communities offer both indoor and outdoor pools for residents.
In regions where the weather gets dangerously hot, swimming pools are vital for aging adults. Elderly people are much more likely to suffer from heat stroke, so make sure you choose a community with at least one swimming pool.

During the warmer months of the year, it’s great to sit out and sunbathe or take a cool dip in the water. When it’s cold outside, your loved one will still be able to enjoy aquatic fitness classes to stay in shape.

Outdoor Sports and Activities

Moving to senior living should not restrict your loved one’s social life and hobbies. Many assisted living communities offer outdoor adventures with options for group endeavors.
Some popular outdoor activities in senior living include:

  • Frisby/disc golf

  • Hiking

  • Biking

  • Swimming

  • Walking on nature trails

  • Sand volleyball

  • Outdoor fitness classes

These amenities allow your loved one to remain in good physical health for the rest of their years.
The social aspect of outdoor activities is equally important. Aging adults often struggle with feelings of loneliness and poor self-esteem. With group activities, they can socialize and form strong bonds with their fellow residents.

Choose the Best Retirement Home Amenities for Your Loved One

Moving to assisted living and other retirement homes can be difficult for the families of aging adults. There’s a lot to consider, but don’t overlook amenities when choosing an assisted living community. If you select a high-quality community, you can rest assured that your loved one has plenty of enjoyable activities to keep them engaged.

3 Signs Your Elderly Loved One May Need Skilled Nursing Care

March 08, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

It’s never easy to care for an aging loved one as their health declines. Unfortunately, many family members of seniors don’t have the skills to keep up with their loved one’s medical needs.

In skilled nursing care provided by assisted living or retirement homes, your loved one is in the best hands possible. Here are some of the signs that your loved one needs more advanced medical care.

 1. They Have Trouble with Basic Tasks

As your loved one gets older, they may have several medical problems that make daily life difficult. Basic tasks like hygiene, grooming, and cooking may be challenging.

This usually happens because of physical or cognitive decline. No matter which one applies to your loved one, if they start having these issues, it’s time for skilled nursing care.

Skilled nursing care provides your loved one with assistance for every daily task. This includes bathing, showering, personal grooming, and keeping their living space clean.

2. Their Current Caregiver Is Burnt Out

It’s common for family members to take over the care of an aging loved one in the family. However, without extensive training and education, caregivers easily become burnt out.

Burnout is a serious problem that caregivers of all kinds face, especially those caring for seniors. There are many complex medical and mental health problems involved with senior care. Family members without medical knowledge or training should not be expected to handle these perfectly.

In addition, caregiver burnout can lead to serious safety risks for both the caregiver and your loved one. If you notice that the family member caring for your loved one is irritable, depressed, or otherwise “off,” it’s time for skilled nursing care.

In assisted living and retirement homes, nurses work in shifts to care for your loved one. They get time to recharge so that their caregiving skills remain top-notch.

3. They Have Trouble Taking Their Medications

Medication is an important part of senior health management. If your loved one struggles to remember their daily medications, it may be time to consider senior living.

Many health conditions affect elderly people and require medication to stay under control. Diabetes, heart problems, and high blood pressure are just a few. Without taking their medication properly, your loved one could be at serious risk of complications.

Some aging adults have trouble with memory, swallowing, and fine motor skills. All of these problems can make taking medication more difficult.

In assisted living and retirement homes, nurses manage medication so that your loved one will always get the proper dose of their medications on time.

Senior Living: Seek the Skilled Nursing Care Your Loved One Needs

There is no shame in seeking out senior living services for your loved one. They deserve the best possible quality of life, and skilled nursing care can help ease the challenges that come with aging.

Is it Time to Consider Assisted Living?

March 07, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

If a loved one is starting to slow down and would welcome assistance with personal daily care or has mobility issues requiring major renovations to their existing home, it may be time to think about assisted living. While there may be several communities to choose from, it is useful to have some insight into your parents’ needs when evaluating senior living communities.

A Place for Mom, an Internet referral service, explains a good place to start is to “compare factors like staff friendliness, amenities, and overall culture.” If you plan to do a virtual tour or onsite visit, come prepared with a list of questions regarding costs, care plans, amenities, programming, and general lifestyle and culture.

During your visit, observe residents. Do they seem engaged, happy? Are they encouraged to participate in activities and events? Ask to see the community’s calendar of activities. If your parents love to play bridge, does the community have a game room and a bridge club? If mom or dad is no longer driving, does the community offer scheduled transportation to doctor visits and other appointments? Do they do outside trips to area shopping and local parks?

Remember your loved one’s suite is where they will sleep but the wider community is where they will live.  Are the common rooms inviting? How about the outdoor areas? Is there a nice courtyard or terrace where they can sit and relax on a nice day? If mom or dad enjoys a glass of wine before dinner, is it available? Other things to ask about include the meal service, the community’s ability to handle both present and future care needs and how emergencies are handled?

MorningStar at West San Jose is a new senior living community designed from the ground up to meet the needs of residents with a range of luxury amenities, senior care, hospitality services, wellness programs, and activities. Opening in June, our community offers stylish assisted living suites in a variety of floorplans and configurations. What’s the Difference Between Long-Term and Short-Term Elder Care?

March 03, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

There are many options when it comes to senior care and support. Knowledge is your best weapon against the fear and hesitation your loved one — and you — may feel.

Long-term and short-term elder care serve different purposes. Which of these types of senior care could be right for your family member depends on several factors.

The Goals of Short-Term Care

Short-term senior care services are designed to help your loved one reach certain milestones. For example, if they have suffered an injury, occupational therapy can help them regain mobility in the affected areas.
Some aging adults need short-term care after surgery or other invasive medical treatments. They receive nursing and specialized medical support for as long as they need it.

Rehabilitation is another common term for short-term care. This term may sound more familiar to you and your loved one. After medical events, rehabilitation aims to restore independence and function to your loved one’s life.

Most short-term facilities end your loved one’s care when they are able to function normally again. At this point, your loved one returns to their home and may follow up with outpatient therapy.

Long-Term Care: Sustained Medical Services

Elderly adults often have long-term medical needs that cannot be “fixed” within a few appointments. This is especially true if your loved one needs memory care or other senior living services.

In long-term care, your loved one receives nursing care indefinitely. This means there is no end date or goal in mind that will terminate your loved one’s care.

Long-term care is perfect for seniors struggling with memory problems, serious medical conditions, and general health decline.

Assisted Living

Assisted living is considered long-term care. When your loved one moves into assisted living, they get to keep their independence while receiving help with daily tasks.

This is a popular option for aging adults who would like additional support with basic tasks, such as cleaning, but do not struggle with advanced memory conditions.

There are still safety measures in place in assisted living facilities. Many common elderly safety hazards are eliminated or addressed in assisted living.

Additionally, assisted living offers long-term support for aging adults to make sure they are healthy, happy, and thriving. Medical services, like nursing care, are usually available to all residents in senior living communities and retirement homes.

Choosing the Right Type of Elderly Care

If your loved one has experienced a consistent decline in physical and/or cognitive abilities, or if they would simply enjoy continued daily assistance within a supportive community, it might be time for long-term elderly care.

On the other hand, short-term injuries, surgeries, and illnesses can be addressed with rehabilitation services. You, your loved one, and their medical providers can discuss the best options for their unique needs.

5 Benefits of Moving into a Skilled Assisted Living Facility

February 27, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

If you have an aging loved one in your life, you know that they may require lots of support and assistance. Assisted living retirement homes can offer the care that they need while supporting their independence and freedom.

Here are five reasons you should consider senior living for your loved one.

1. Specialized Nursing Care

Your loved ones will have access to specialized nursing services once they move into retirement homes or assisted living facilities. The nurses on staff have extensive training with elderly patients, so they know the best medical solutions to offer your loved one.

For people of any age, frequent medical appointments can be tiring. With assisted living, nursing support services are available as your loved one needs them.

This also means you don’t have to worry whether your loved one is taking their medications properly. Medication management is part of senior living by default.

2. Enjoyable Amenities

Many assisted living facilities and retirement homes offer exciting amenities. These additional services and spaces offer your loved ones more life satisfaction without the hassle of transportation.
Most senior living communities offer amenities such as:

  • Swimming pools

  • Fitness centers

  • Nutrition and wellness classes

  • Game nights

  • Common areas for socialization

  • Outdoor tracks and paths

  • Recreational sports

  • Group classes for hobbies and crafts

With these amenities at their disposal, your loved one can enjoy their golden years with convenience.

3. Housekeeping Services

In senior living communities, housekeeping services are part of your loved one’s resident package. These services include tasks like laundry, bathroom cleaning, and dishes.
Your loved one may struggle with mobility, energy, or other physical problems. These issues can make cleaning and organizing a major chore.

In assisted living and retirement homes, your loved one doesn’t have to worry about these things. They are already done for them!

4. Community Events

Who doesn’t love a night out with friends?

In retirement communities, gatherings and events are very common. They encourage residents to spend time together socializing, exercising, and having fun.

Community relationships are incredibly important for mental health at any age. In senior living, your loved one has access to the members of their community regularly. As a bonus, they get to have fun participating in new hobbies and activities!

5. Better Quality of Life

With 24/7 access to proper medical care, amenities, and socialization, your loved one can thrive in senior living.

Quality of life becomes more important than ever as adults reach retirement age. They have worked their whole lives, and it’s common to search for meaning and purpose afterward.
In senior living, they can find themselves all over again while enjoying the various convenient services and amenities.

Consider Assisted Living for Your Family Member

If the elderly adult in your life has started to struggle with the basic tasks of daily life, or if they are tired of dedicating the time and expense it takes to maintain a home, assisted living may be the ideal solution. There, they can get the support that they need while freeing up time for your relationship to thrive.

Would Assisted Living Meet Your Loved One’s Needs?

February 22, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

For many families, assisted living is a new concept and they don’t know if it would meet their loved one’s needs. While services may depend on where you live, there are similarities regardless of your zip code. The first thing families should understand is assisted living is not skilled nursing care but rather intended for seniors who require a “helping hand” with daily care activities. Seniors need to understand assisted living does not take away their independence but rather enhances it.

Assisted living communities offer an environment to safely age in place while receiving an array of senior care services, companionship and programs to improve quality of life. Residents enjoy not having to worry about home maintenance and yard work as well as preparing meals and driving as most assisted living communities provide these services.

Another big benefit to assisted living is the resident no longer feels like a burden to their family. Now when a son or daughter comes for a visit, it is just that. There isn’t a list of chores to do or the need to help with personal care or meal prep but time can be spent enjoying one another.

When you are searching for assisted living, one of the services listed should include help with the ADLs (activities of daily). ADLs include things like medication management, bathing, dressing, grooming, transference (help getting in and out of bed to wheelchair, walker etc.)  As an incoming resident, your loved one’s level of care will be based on the ADLs to create a Personalized Care Plan.

Facts and Myths About Arthritis

February 13, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

In an article in Medical News Today experts discuss some of the common myths and facts regarding arthritis, a condition that causes pain and inflammation in joints. Osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are the two main types of arthritis, and a national survey found nearly half of adults 65 years and older have been diagnosed with arthritis. OA, the most common form and leading cause of disability in older adults, is the result of cartilage between the bones in a joint wearing down.

Many people believe arthritis is only a disease of the elderly but RA, while not as common as OA, typically starts in individuals as young as 20 to 40 years old. People also mistakenly think if a joint hurts, it must be arthritis. Doctors say there are several reasons a person may experience pain in and around joints including old injuries, bursitis, and tendinitis.

Another myth is you shouldn’t exercise if you have arthritis; however, studies show exercise can actually help with range of motion and strength in the joint (consult with your healthcare provider before starting any new exercise or activity). The American College of Rheumatology says, “Exercise and arthritis can and should coexist. People with arthritis who exercise regularly have less pain, more energy, improved sleep, and better day-to-day function.”

Then there is the debate on whether heat is better than ice for sore joints. The Guy’s and St Thomas’s National Health Service (NHS) Foundation Trust in the UK, explains, “Used in the right way, heat can help reduce pain and stiffness in joints and muscles. Cold application can help reduce joint inflammation and swelling.” Moreover, experts say believing arthritis is unpreventable is only partially true as there are things people can do to mitigate risk or slow down the progression such as maintaining a healthy body weight.

How to Keep Seniors Active and Engaged While Living in an Assisted Living Facility

January 18, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

One of the best ways to keep seniors happy while living in an assisted living facility is to help them stay active.

Research has shown that seniors who are physically active and have healthy social lives show lower rates of memory decline, further validating the importance of activity for seniors in assisted living communities.

Tips for Keeping Residents in Assisted Living Homes Active

Socialization is at the heart of keeping seniors active. As such, facilities need to provide residents with a safe and stimulating environment. Isolation frequently leads to depression for seniors, negatively impacting their happiness and health.

Every outstanding assisted living facility keeps its residents engaged with plenty of programs, shows, social events, games, and contests that promote socialization. Assisted living facilities are excellent alternatives for seniors who would otherwise be alone at home.

Enjoying the Outdoors

One of the best things seniors (and people of any age) can do for their health is to spend time outdoors. However, it isn’t always easy for them to leave their homes, which is why assisted living facilities are so important — they’re designed to help seniors do more, not less.

Studies indicate that getting fresh air and sunshine can lower stress and anxiety levels, improve one’s mood, and ease the kind of restlessness that residents can begin to feel if they stay indoors too long.

Participating in Programs

Being active in group settings can serve seniors not only mentally but also physically. For example, staying physically active can boost the immune system and reduce or even prevent the effects of arthritis. Seniors should get some physical activity daily to improve mobility, mood, and strength.

These types of physical activity programs can also help residents stay socially mobile and connected, as they offer opportunities for socialization during walks, group classes, and other activities.

Intellectual Stimulation

Mental stimulation is also crucial for keeping seniors happy and engaged in assisted living. Research demonstrates that keeping the mind sharp through problem-solving exercises can help ward off Alzheimer’s disease and age-related memory loss.

The best types of intellectual activities for seniors include:

  • Crossword puzzles

  • Memory games

  • Board games

  • Card games

  • Bingo

  • Sudoku

  • Puzzles

  • Trivia games

Arts and crafts projects afford opportunities for intellectual stimulation, too. Thinking, speaking, reading, writing, and learning are examples of cognitive skills that can improve with regular intellectual stimulation.

Reach the Outer Community

There are also lots of excellent outreach programs and non-profit organizations that can help seniors stay active in numerous ways. Many specifically encourage residents to stay involved in their communities outside assisted living, helping residents feel like they’re making a difference in the world.

Encouragement Goes a Long Way

One of the best things anyone can do to keep seniors active, engaged, and healthy is simply offer them encouragement. Words of motivation and support can go a long way — sometimes, people just need a little boost to find the desire to participate in activities and pastimes that bring them joy and preserve their well-being.

MorningStar is guided by a culture rooted in our mission of honoring God, valuing seniors, and investing in our team, which allows us to deliver services with warmth, sincerity and depth of purpose. Are You Taking a Medication That Could Increase Your Risk of a Fall?

January 18, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

The Center for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) reports millions of older adults fall each year—resulting in more than 34,000 deaths in 2019. Of those falls, 3 million seniors were treated in emergency departments for fall injuries; and one out of every five falls causes an injury, such as broken bones or a head injury. With these alarming statistics, experts say it is important for seniors to know their risk for a fall including whether they are taking medications associated with an increased risk.

Examples of medications that could lead to a fall include those that suppress the central nervous system as they reduce alertness and slow reactions and movements. Some of these types of drugs include anti-anxiety medications like diazepam (Valium) and lorazepam (Ativan). Additionally, antihistamines can cause drowsiness and are used in over-the-counter sleep aids like Nyquil and Sominex, or combined with acetaminophen in products like Tylenol PM.

If you or a loved one takes medication to treat an overactive bladder or tricyclic antidepressants to help lessen chronic pain, they too can affect a person’s balance. Other drugs that increase the risk of a fall are opioids such as codeine, hydrocodone and oxycodone.

Your first step to lessen your risk should be to talk to your doctor to see if you are taking any medication that could increase your possibility of a fall. Furthermore, experts say adjusting or making a change in medication is the easiest thing to do to help prevent a fall. If it is determined you are taking a medication known to cause light-headedness, dizziness, sudden drop in blood pressure, or chronically low blood pressure or hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), you and your healthcare team can regularly re-evaluate your need and dosage.

Another way to mitigate your risk for a fall is to do exercises designed to improve leg strength and balance. In addition, be sure to get an annual eye exam and update your glasses as needed. Lastly check your home for trip hazards (keep clutter out of hallways and stairways) and install grab bars and better lighting where needed.

6 Tips for Settling into an Assisted Living Community

January 16, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

Transitioning to an assisted living community can be daunting after living in your own home. However, there are some excellent and very beneficial things you can do to help you settle into your new home and enjoy the opportunities it affords.

Following recommended tips and guidelines can help ease worries and anxieties while gaining confidence in your new surroundings.

Best Tips for Acclimating to Assisted Living

Adjusting to assisted living isn’t an immediate, seamless transition, so it’s important to be patient and give yourself time to adjust. To make the most of your days in your new home, keep the following tips in mind:

1. Make It a Point to Get to Know Staff and Caregivers

Caregivers will be abuzz regarding your care plan, and you’ll likely meet fitness staff members, social directors, dining personnel, and others who lead your new community. While they will certainly make it a point to get to know you, it would ease your transition if you returned the gesture.

2. Become Acquainted with Your Neighbors

You’re always encouraged to meet your neighbors, whether they live right next door to you, down the hall, or anywhere on your floor. Every person you meet could become a good friend, so introduce yourself to as many folks as possible. If you’re nervous about this, remember that they, too, were once new to the community!

3. Don’t Shy Away from Community Events

It can be difficult during the first few weeks to get out there and get involved, but it’s imperative that you do. These activities and events are one of your community's biggest benefits, and they offer you a golden opportunity to get to know other people and learn what’s available to you.

4. Get Involved

Find out what kind of clubs, groups, and associations are active in your community; most have groups focused on specific values, interests, or hobbies. This might be anything from gardening, reading, or playing cards to resident council groups or Bible study clubs.

5. Head to the Dining Room for Meals

Don’t withdraw to your room and stay there for meals because mealtime is undoubtedly one of the highlights of everyone’s day! Dine with staff members and other residents every chance you get, schedule your meals with your neighbors, and make it a point to connect with others over a delicious meal.

6. Get Out There and Have a Good Time

Just because you live in an assisted living community doesn’t mean that your outside life gets tossed away! In fact, you might find that you have more opportunities than ever to catch a bus to the mall, a restaurant, a park, or a night out on the town!

You deserve every happiness while you become acclimated to your new home in your assisted living community. The best thing you can do is to take every opportunity to meet others and stay busy with all the fun activities that come your way!

MorningStar is guided by a culture rooted in our mission of honoring God, valuing seniors, and investing in our team, which allows us to deliver services with warmth, sincerity and depth of purpose. 7 Benefits of Participating in Assisted Living Activities and Programs for Seniors

January 13, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

Did you know that almost one million people in the United States live in assisted living communities? This means that almost one million people are active in clubs, groups, organizations, and activities, sharing common interests and enjoying the company of others.

Why Assisted Living Activities Are Important

The importance of activities for residents of assisted living communities cannot be overstated. These activities deliver an enormous array of benefits to participants, including the following:

  • Improved social connections

  • Better moods

  • Improved physical health

  • Improved cardiovascular health

  • Elevated cognition

  • Better interpersonal relationships

  • Less stress and anxiety

In addition, people who participate in assisted living activities suffer less from loneliness and don’t feel as “disconnected” as those who aren’t as active.

Additional Benefits of Assisted Living Activity Programs

Activities and programs at senior living assisted communities can positively impact a person’s life in various ways. Everyone reacts differently to participating in hobbies with others, but some additional benefits are pretty much universal.

Programs and activities give seniors something to look forward to every day or every week, and they also give participants structure for their routines. When seniors belong to a group, they enjoy a sense of security and safety as well.

For many seniors, activities at their assisted living homes give them a sense of purpose, which is vital and connected to their mental and physical health. Some of the best activities for seniors in assisted living communities include the following:

  • Cardio programs

  • Flower arranging

  • Yoga

  • Bingo and other games

  • Continuing education courses

  • Arts and crafts

  • Board games

  • Music classes

  • Going on picnics

  • Taking a bus or van to a shopping mall

  • Crossword puzzles

  • Trivia games

  • Card games

  • Dance classes

  • Movie nights

Discussion groups, such as book clubs, are also very popular activities. Entertainment can also be brought in from outside the community, such as musical groups, comedians, and theater companies.

One of the Most Important Benefits of All: A Sense of Independence

While there are countless benefits that seniors enjoy from activities, perhaps one of the most important is that they can retain their sense of independence.

When people move out of their homes and into assisted living communities or facilities, they almost always feel a sense of loss, like they are losing their independence. This loss can be enough to cause a slew of negative emotions and symptoms, including depression.

However, when there are plenty of excellent activities in which they can participate, they can retain much of their independence and be responsible for making important decisions in their lives, just like they always have. This is vital to the health and happiness of members of senior communities.

Thanks to planned activities and programs, assisted living communities are better places to live.

5 Social Activities That Are Safe for Seniors in Memory Care

January 02, 2023 by MorningStar Senior Living in Assisted Living

As people age, they may begin to experience memory loss and other cognitive decline. This can be a difficult time for both the individual and their family members. One of the best things that you can do is to find activities that are safe for seniors in memory care.

The following are only some of the many activities that can help stimulate the mind and improve cognitive function, as well as improve mood and reduce anxiety

Games That Focus on Memory

Staying active mentally is key for seniors in memory care. Playing games that focus on memory can help to stimulate the mind, sharpen cognitive skills, and improve the ability to recall information. Memory games like crosswords, word searches, memorization games, and more can all be fun and beneficial activities.

Educational Programs

Education programs are an excellent way for seniors to engage in stimulating activities. Learning through multimedia and interactive software can be a great way to keep the mind sharp and active. Educational programs are also an opportunity for seniors to learn new skills, stay connected to the world around them, and interact with others in a casual and meaningful way.

Physical Activity

Physical activity can be beneficial for those in memory care. Even moderate activity such as walking can help to improve balance and stability, as well as reduce the risk of falls. Stretching and strengthening exercises are also important components of a healthy lifestyle and can help to reduce the risk of chronic health conditions.

Socializing

Socializing is an incredibly important aspect of life for seniors in memory care. Some social activities that may be of benefit include attending classes, taking trips, going to church, and participating in clubs. Socializing with peers can also improve mood and increase levels of concentration.

Volunteering

Volunteering is a great way for residents in senior living communities to stay active and engaged. Not only is it good for the individuals themselves, but it can also have an impact on the greater community. Volunteering can help to reduce stress, provide meaningful interactions with others, and feel connected to the greater world.

Finding activities that are safe for seniors in memory care is an important part of helping the individual stay engaged and active. We encourage you to find activities that your loved one enjoys and that you believe will benefit them.
