Ultra-Processed Foods and Type 2 Diabetes

While there is a lot of data on how lifestyle habits impact our health, a study published last year reinforces a link between ultra-processed foods and the increase in a person’s risk for type 2 diabetes. The study from the University College London analyzed the intake of ultra-processed foods and health outcomes in more than 310,000 Europeans over a period of ten years. 

This deserves attention as our country’s research shows “about 60% of daily caloric intake for Americans comes from consuming ultra-processed foods.” Moreover, according to the CDC, the number of Americans with diabetes or prediabetes continues to rise. They state 38.4 million people or 11.6 percent of the population has diabetes, and another 97.6 million people aged 18 years or older (38 percent of the adult U.S. population) has prediabetes.

Researchers say the problem with ultra-processed foods is they include additives and/or industrial processed and novel types of fats, proteins and carbs a home cook wouldn’t use. Samuel Dicken, BA Hons (Cantab.), MSc, clinical scientist and doctoral researcher at the Centre for Obesity Research in the Division of Medicine at University College London, and lead author of the study explained to Medical News Today, “Ultra-processed foods are everywhere, they’re highly accessible, cheap, convenient, and heavily marketed.” He says just take a look at grocery shelves filled with ultra-processed foods like breakfast cereals, snacks, plant-based alternatives and sugary drinks. 

Despite the study showing the more ultra-processed food a person consumed, the higher the risk for developing type 2 diabetes; the study also had good news. It reported participants who altered their diet by replacing 10 percent of ultra-processed foods with 10 percent of minimally processed foods reduced their diabetes risk by 8%. 

Experts say to improve our diet; we should eat more fruits and vegetables, limit drive-through meals and cook healthy meals at home. Also, when grocery shopping, read labels; the longer the list, the more likely it is ultra-processed regardless of claims of low fat or high fiber.

If you are at the point in life where you are not as stable as you used to be, have balance problems, arthritis or leg weakness; a mobility aid such as a walker could help keep you moving and lessen your chance of a fall. The first thing to do is work with a physical therapist or your healthcare provider to discuss the best type of walker for your personal needs and comfort. There are several fit points to consider as well as styles.

One common choice is a standard walker with four rubber-tipped legs and no wheels. Experts say it provides the most stability but has the drawback of having to pick it up to move. Other choices include walkers with wheels. A two-wheel walker has wheels on the front and can be helpful for those who have trouble picking up a standard walker. Four–wheel walkers may help those very unsteady on their feet but can be a bit less stable. This type of walker has the option of a seat for those that need to rest often. 

Another important step in getting the proper walker is the height of the arms. The Mayo Clinic suggests stepping into the walker with your shoulders relaxed and upright. Elbows should be able to comfortably bend at 15 degrees. Other tips include remembering to stand upright when using them as it is easier on your back, and to move one step at a time. Step into the walker with each step rather than walking behind it. 

Use caution when using a walker on a slippery or wet surface, and even carpet requires extra care. Just as you do when you are walking on your own, be sure to wear sensible low-heeled shoes that fit well and have good grips on the soles.

Pets Bring a Number of Benefits to Older Adults

Study after study finds many seniors report feeling lonely and socially isolated, which can in itself put a person at higher risk for depression and other health problems. According to a recent 2023 National Poll on Healthy Aging (NPHA) from the University of Michigan; one in three adults aged 50–80 (34%) reported feeling isolated from others. Another 29% of respondents said some of the time, and 5% say they often felt isolated in the past year. While this is lower than responses during the height of the pandemic, the numbers are still higher than they were in 2019. 

Loneliness can be felt by any age group but as people age they are faced with unique challenges that can increase the problem such as the death of a spouse, retirement and their own declining health. To mitigate the problem, studies show a pet can fill some of the void by providing unconditional love, companionship and a sense of purpose. 

Researchers say older pet owners report being more physically active than their non-pet owner counterparts, which in turn can help lower blood pressure and decrease their risk of heart disease. Other studies find pets can aid in slowing down cognitive decline and dementia in older adults. 

Pets provide an elderly person with purpose, responsibility and routine. A dog needs to be walked, thereby providing exercise for the owner. They need to be fed each day as well as groomed and petted. Surveys also find a pet helps a person socially engage with others when out walking a dog or taking the pet to the groomer or vet. The Alzheimer’s Association explains Alzheimer’s is a disease that not only affects the individual but robs family members of their loved one. As the disease progresses, it takes away more and more of the person and the family begins to mourn the loss. While grief has different phases including denial, anger, guilt, sadness and acceptance in no particular order; universally shared by most families is unease about what the future holds and what to expect next. 

Hope is a powerful human emotion so denying the disease is a coping mechanism for some as they try to convince themselves their loved one will get better or not reach the level of devastation experienced by many suffering from the disease. Others may refuse to recognize the changed behavior and make excuses for it. 

Spouses and significant others may experience anger as they feel abandoned by the person and frustrated at their inability to do anything about it. They may also feel resentment and overwhelmed by caregiving duties but experts say it is important to be honest with yourself. Recognize you need more support and ask for it.  

Other feelings of grief include guilt. A person may worry they have not done enough or are not visiting often enough. While unrealistic, spouses may feel guilty they are still able to enjoy life while their wife or husband is no longer able. If a caregiver is not getting enough support, they may even experience thoughts about wishing the person would die or go away. A recent article in Today’s Geriatrics Medicine states many adults as early as in their 60s start to experience a slip in their mental abilities. By the age of seventy, studies show as many as 67 percent of people experience some level of cognitive decline. A small group of those people (around 10 percent) will go on to develop more serious cognitive diseases such as Alzheimer’s. However is it good to know not everyone who is diagnosed with MCI (mild cognitive impairment) will progress to Alzheimer’s.

We know the risk for Alzheimer’s is higher in those with a genetic connection or have a history of head trauma or cerebral ischemia. Modifiable factors including lifestyle habits like alcohol use, smoking, poor nutrition and obesity can also increase one’s risk for dementia. Researchers say in the early stages of cognitive decline improving things like “diet, stress management, sleep quality, mental health, social connections and exposure to toxins” may help mitigate or prevent further decline. Other problems that may interfere with cognition are chronic systemic inflammation, hormonal imbalances, low levels of vitamin D and insulin resistance. 

People in the early stages of cognitive decline should be assessed for nutrient deficiencies and underlying health conditions that may accelerate their condition; and be provided information on specific foods and nutrients known to support brain health. For those with Alzheimer’s, experts recommend caregivers and dietitians encourage a structured and enjoyable eating experience formed around the individual’s eating preferences and cultural traditions. It is important to remember you can’t force someone to eat something they don’t like just because it is good for them.

Dizziness is a Common Complaint of Older Adults

Doctors say dizziness is a common complaint of older adults. Symptoms may include vertigo (feels like the room is spinning); light-headedness; faintness and weakness; and nausea. While confusing and uncomfortable to sufferers, experts say it’s rarely a sign of anything serious or life-threatening, and is generally treatable. However if you experience acute, prolonged dizziness, especially if accompanied with symptoms such as chest pains, passing out and/or severe headache; seek immediate medical attention. 

Most causes of dizziness are from an inner ear disturbance, motion sickness, medications, or other conditions of poor health. To diagnose the problem, your doctor will want to know how long your dizziness lasts and other symptoms you may be having. Medications with the known side-effect of dizziness include ACE inhibitors, beta-blockers and calcium-channel blockers. 

The Mayo Clinic explains that with inner ear disorders your brain receives signals from the inner ear that aren’t consistent with what your eyes and sensory nerves are receiving. Vertigo may result as the brain works to try and sort out the confusion. One common inner ear problem is benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). The condition comes on with sudden movements of the head that cause vertigo and is treated with certain maneuvers and medications like meclizine (an antihistamine used to treat motion sickness and dizziness).

Meniere’s disease is another inner ear condition and is the result of a fluid built-up in the inner ear. Symptoms include long-term vertigo caused by things like too much salt in the diet, coffee, alcohol and stress, as well as viral infections and congestion. Treatment includes altering your diet and medications to relieve fluid build-up.    

Dizziness can also be caused by migraines, neurological conditions, dehydration, low blood sugar and other conditions. It is important to remember that dizziness can increase your risk for a fall. If the condition persists, talk to your doctor who can help narrow down the causes of your dizziness and prescribe the appropriate treatment.
